Birthday Wishes in Telugu That Render on Every Phone

A Telugu birthday wish should be short, and it should travel as a chat message or a link rather than a plain SMS. On SubhSandesh the median personal message written on a birthday page is 96 characters (n=197), and 106 of those 197 messages come in under 100 characters. Telugu forces an SMS into UCS-2 encoding, where one segment holds 70 characters instead of 160 — so the length people actually write is a one-part message in English and a two-part message in Telugu. Birthday pages also break the phone-first assumption: across 2,224 views of 198 birthday pages we recorded 1,081 mobile and 1,121 desktop opens, a 48.6% mobile split against 51.0% site-wide. Below are six Telugu wishes with their exact character counts, the encoding arithmetic behind them, and why the same wish shows up as empty boxes on some devices.

What a Telugu birthday wish is once it leaves your keyboard

A Telugu birthday wish is a greeting written in the Telugu script — పుట్టినరోజు శుభాకాంక్షలు, puttinaroju shubhakankshalu, "birthday good wishes" — stored as Unicode code points and then drawn by whatever font the receiving device happens to own.

Those are two separate jobs that fail separately. Encoding decides whether the characters survive the trip; shaping and font fallback decide whether they arrive as letters or as boxes.

Telugu is a complex script, which in typographic terms means the shapes on screen are not a one-to-one map of the characters you typed. HarfBuzz, the shaping engine that runs inside Android, Windows, macOS, iOS and Linux, handles Telugu under its Indic model alongside Devanagari, Bengali and Tamil — a separate code path from the default model it uses for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic. Every extra code path is somewhere the wish can break.

Six Telugu birthday wishes, with the character count that decides how they send

Each wish is given in Telugu, in transliteration, in English, and with its exact character count, so you can see how it sits against the 96-character median.

1. పుట్టినరోజు శుభాకాంక్షలు

Puttinaroju shubhakankshalu — "Happy birthday." The neutral default, correct for anyone from a colleague to a cousin. 24 characters, one SMS segment, a quarter of the 96-character median. It carries no honorific either way, which is why it is safe when you are unsure of the register.

2. జన్మదిన శుభాకాంక్షలు

Janmadina shubhakankshalu — "Birthday greetings." The Sanskritised, formal register for a teacher, a boss or a public post. 20 characters, one segment, the shortest of the six. Use it where warmth would read as over-familiar.

3. మీకు ఆయురారోగ్యాలతో నిండు నూరేళ్లు

Meeku ayurarogyalato nindu nurellu — "A full hundred years to you, with long life and health." The traditional blessing, and the one people actually say to elders. 34 characters and one segment, using the honorific మీకు rather than నీకు.

4. నీ పుట్టినరోజు ఎప్పటికీ గుర్తుండిపోవాలి

Nee puttinaroju eppatiki gurtundipovali — "May this birthday stay with you forever." Informal నీ, so it is for a friend or a sibling, never an elder. 39 characters — the longest here, still one segment, still well under the median.

5. అమ్మా, పుట్టినరోజు శుభాకాంక్షలు

Amma, puttinaroju shubhakankshalu — "Happy birthday, Amma." Swap అమ్మా for నాన్నా for a father. 31 characters, one segment. Naming the person is the single cheapest way to stop a wish reading like a forward, and it costs six characters.

6. హ్యాపీ బర్త్‌డే మామా

Happy birthday mama — "Happy birthday, mate." English written in Telugu letters, which is how many younger Telugu speakers type. 20 characters, one segment, and it contains a zero-width non-joiner, so it is the one most likely to render oddly on an old build.

To hand one of these to a page rather than a text box, the birthday page for parents takes the wish and the personal message as two separate fields — which is why the 96-character median is measurable at all.

Where a Telugu wish costs more to send than the same wish in English

The SMS alphabet is defined by 3GPP TS 23.038. Its GSM 7-bit default alphabet carries Latin and a handful of Greek letters, and a message coded from it "can consist of up to 160 characters". Telugu is not in that alphabet, so a Telugu SMS falls to UCS-2, where the spec caps a message at "140 octets, i.e. up to 70 UCS2 characters".

The same specification does define a Telugu National Language Locking Shift Table — National Language Identifier 00001100, clause A.3.12 — which replaces the default alphabet with Telugu and restores the 160-character budget. Both ends must support it and signal it in the User Data Header. Where they do not, you are back to 70.

The spec also recommends UCS-2 outright when a message mixes languages needing different tables, which is precisely what happens when you drop an English name or "Happy Birthday" into a Telugu wish.

The takeaway is the last column, not the first: only a web page can carry the Telugu font with it. Everywhere else you are betting on what the recipient already has installed.

Why Telugu shows up as empty boxes on some phones

Android's Compatibility Definition Document is the list of things a device has to do to be called Android. Section 3.8.13 requires colour emoji rendering and "full Unicode 7.0 coverage of Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic". Telugu is not on that mandatory list.

That is a gap rather than a bug. Mainstream Android builds ship Noto Sans Telugu anyway, and most phones sold in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana render it perfectly. But a stripped ROM or an unusual desktop browser can have no Telugu glyphs at all and still be compliant — which matters here, because 51.4% of our birthday page views are not on a phone.

The second failure mode is subtler. Microsoft's guidance for Telugu OpenType fonts recommends that a Telugu font include the dotted-circle character U+25CC, so an invalid mark sequence has something to sit on. Without it, those implementations "will display invalid signs on the missing glyph shape (white box)" — the difference between a wish that looks slightly wrong and one that looks broken.

Behind both sits the shaping engine, running a fixed thirteen-feature sequence for Telugu — reph, below-base forms, half forms, conjuncts, then presentation forms. Every conjunct in your wish is one more substitution an out-of-date font can get wrong.

Practically: keep the wish short and send it to yourself first. Half our birthday pages are finished within an hour of the first save (100 of 198), so there is rarely time to find a rendering problem afterwards.

What eye tracking says about reading Telugu on a screen

The best open-access measurement of Telugu reading on a display we could find is Chowdhury and colleagues' 2015 paper in the Journal of Eye Movement Research. They recruited 200 Indian infantry soldiers, 50 from each of four Dravidian language groups, and report eye-movement data for 44 per group.

In the Telugu group, average fixation duration while reading Telugu on screen was 557 ms, against 326 ms for the same readers on English text. The eye rests roughly 70% longer on each stop. Word processing rate in Telugu was 95.63 words per minute, the lowest of the four groups — Malayalam readers managed 141.

The rate is not the whole story, though, and the inconvenient half is worth stating: total reading time was still significantly lower in Telugu, 161.9 seconds against 199.1 for English, because Telugu packs more meaning into fewer words. All four groups rated their own script "very easy" to read; English sat between "easy" and "moderate".

Read honestly, a Telugu wish is fast to read and slow to scan. It is also a 2015 study of infantry volunteers on a 19-inch desktop monitor, not a phone study, so treat the direction as reliable and the magnitudes as indicative.

When a Telugu wish is the wrong choice

If the recipient reads Telugu but types in Roman letters — and many people under thirty do — a full Telugu-script message can land as formal, like a circular rather than a note. Transliteration is not a lesser option; it is often the register they live in.

Honorifics are the other trap, and we are not the ones to solve it for you. మీరు and నువ్వు are not interchangeable, and getting it wrong with an elder is worse than sending English. Every Telugu line on this page is machine-composed: have a Telugu speaker read it before you send it to anyone whose opinion you care about.

There is a limit on the interactive part too. Of the 195 birthday pages that included a quiz, only 28 ever had it played — 14.4%. Senders build games; recipients mostly read the message and leave. If the wish is the point, put it in the wish, not in a quiz.

And if you are in the same room, say it out loud. A birthday page for a friend earns its place across a distance; it is a poor substitute for being there. Our birthday pages average 11.2 views each against 12.2 site-wide, and only 2 of 198 ever passed 50 views — read by one person, carefully, once.
