or browse all occasionsKey takeaways
- • Send four short messages, not one long one: a save-the-date about 7 days out, details 2 to 3 days out, a day-before nudge and a one-line reminder on the day.
- • A WhatsApp broadcast list holds up to 256 contacts and only reaches people who saved your number; a Community announcement reaches up to 2,000 members.
- • A WhatsApp Event in a group lets guests answer Going, Maybe or Not going, and notifies Going and Maybe guests when the night starts.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so the date, time and gate belong in the first two lines.
- • Be My Dandiya Partner is for inviting one person; for a society or office group, use the group text and a WhatsApp Event.

Dandiya Night Invitation Message for WhatsApp, Chat by Chat
A dandiya night invitation message for WhatsApp works best as four short sends, not one long one: a save-the-date, a details message, a day-of reminder and a "we're here" note, each written for the WhatsApp surface it goes out on. The surface decides more than the wording does. A broadcast list reaches at most 256 contacts, a Community announcement up to 2,000, and a Status disappears after 24 hours.
Two of our own numbers set the rules. 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so the first two lines of every message must carry the date, the time and the gate. And in our Raksha Bandhan 2026 data (n=89 pages, the nearest festival analogue we have, not Navratri data), 49.4% of people built their page on the festival day itself. People act late, so the day-of reminder is the send that matters most. Below: a ready text for each surface, the timing table, dandiya-only lines and RSVP chasers.
What should a dandiya night invitation message on WhatsApp include?
A dandiya night invitation message is a short text that tells a guest when and where the stick dance is, what to bring and wear, and how to reply. It differs from a general Navratri invite because dandiya raas is danced in pairs with sticks, so guests need to know about sticks, passes and partners before they arrive.
Every message in this guide carries the same seven fields, in this order: the night and date, start and end time, venue with gate number, pass or entry rule, sticks, dress code, and a reply instruction. WhatsApp's own event tool allows a description of up to 2,048 characters, but a guest reading on a phone sees the first few lines first. Put the date and gate there; put the rules lower down.
Five WhatsApp surfaces, five dandiya invitation messages
Each surface gets four fields: reach, WhatsApp's published limit, the message, and the mistake.
1. A one-to-one chat
Reaches: one person, with no forwarding label and no audience watching. Limit: none that matters for one invite. Message:
"Riya, our society dandiya is on Saturday from 8 pm, Gate 3 near the temple lawn. I have two passes and a spare pair of sticks. Come with me? Wear the green one you wore last year."
Mistake: pasting the group text. Only a personal chat lets you name a shared memory.
2. A WhatsApp group, with an Event attached
Reaches: every member; WhatsApp groups hold up to 1,024 people. Limit: an Event made in the group cannot be forwarded, and members who join later cannot see it, per WhatsApp's guide to creating events in groups. Message:
"Dandiya night is ON. Saturday, 8 to 10 pm, clubhouse lawn, entry from Gate 3. Sticks at the desk for anyone who needs them. Tap the event below and mark Going or Maybe so we can plan food."
Mistake: asking for replies in the chat. Guests who tap Going or Maybe get a notification when the Event starts, a built-in day-of reminder.
3. A broadcast list
Reaches: up to 256 contacts per list, each receiving it as a private message. Limit: only people who have saved your number get it, and in some countries a cap of 35 broadcasts a month is rolling out, according to WhatsApp's broadcast list help page and its note on broadcast limits, which names "event invites" as a use. Message:
"Hi! We're hosting a small dandiya night at home on Saturday, 8 pm, Flat 702, Tower B. Kids' round first, then the grown-ups. Reply YES with how many are coming."
Mistake: writing "Hi all". Replies come back to you one by one, so the message reads as personal; keep it that way.
4. A WhatsApp Status
Reaches: your status audience, which you can narrow with "Only share with…". Limit: it vanishes after 24 hours, and anyone you @-mention can reshare it. Message:
"Dandiya on our terrace, Saturday 8 pm. Sticks provided. If you can see this and want in, reply here and I'll send the address."
Mistake: putting the address on a Status. Use it as a teaser and share the location in the one-to-one reply.
5. A Community announcement
Reaches: everyone in the community; WhatsApp's community announcements page says up to 2,000 members, and only admins can post. Limit: members can reply and react, but cannot leave the announcement group without leaving the community. Message:
"Navratri dandiya, all towers: Saturday, 7:30 to 10 pm, main lawn. Kids' slot 7:30 to 8:15. Pass collection at the society office, Friday 6 to 8 pm. Please carry your own sticks; 20 spare pairs at the desk."
Mistake: chatty follow-ups. Save the second announcement for changes only.
The four-message sequence, and when to send each
Plans firm up late, so one invitation is not enough. The table sets the four sends against the closest timing data we hold.
| Message | When to send | What it carries | Our timing data (Raksha Bandhan 2026, n=89) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save-the-date | 7 days before | Night, date, "details soon" | 0 of 89 pages were built more than 7 days ahead |
| Details | 2 to 3 days before | Time, gate, pass pickup, sticks, dress code | 5.6% built two to three days ahead |
| Day-before nudge | 1 day before | Weather, parking, kids' slot time | 27.0% built the day before |
| Day-of reminder | Morning of the night | Start time and gate, one line | 49.4% built on the day itself |
The takeaway: send the save-the-date no earlier than a week out, and never skip the day-of reminder. The fourth message, sent once you arrive, is the shortest: "We're here, Gate 3, left of the dhol stage, look for the orange dupatta."
Dandiya-specific lines: sticks, passes, dress code and kids
These are the lines a generic Navratri invite leaves out, and each saves you answering the same question ten times.
- Sticks: "Bring your own pair if you have one; we have 20 spare pairs at the desk."
- Borrowing: "Short of sticks? Reply STICKS and we'll keep a pair aside for you."
- Pass pickup: "Passes at the society office, Friday 6 to 8 pm. Bring your flat number."
- Dress code: "Chaniya choli or kurta, anything you can spin in. Comfortable shoes, the lawn is uneven."
- Kids' slot: "Children dance from 7:30 to 8:15 with lighter sticks, then hand over to the grown-ups."
- Plus-one: "Bringing someone? Tap 'Going with guest' on the event."
That last line relies on WhatsApp's events feature, where guests can respond Going, Going with guest, Maybe or Not going.
What the WhatsApp link preview shows, and how long to make the message
When you paste a link, WhatsApp builds a preview card from the page's Open Graph tags: a title, a description and an image. We checked our own page. The /dandiya-partner link carries the title "You've been invited to a Dandiya night", a one-line teaser and a 1200×630 image, so the card itself reads as an invitation before anyone taps.
Keep the text above the link to two lines. Forwarding is also capped: WhatsApp lets a message go to five chats at once, and a message passed through a chain of five or more is labelled "Forwarded many times", which makes a personal invite look like a chain message.
This is where the one-to-one invite earns its place. If there is one person you want beside you in the dandiya circle, our Be My Dandiya Partner invitation is built for that chat and no other. They clash a pair of sticks to open it, light nine diyas that each show one of your lines, pick the colour they will twirl in, and answer "Will you be my Dandiya partner?" The No button twirls away and, after five tries, becomes a second Yes. A yes gives them a downloadable 1080×1920 Dandiya Pass, and the ticket has an Add to calendar button. 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect their page before sharing, which suits a private ask. If the plan is a date beyond the garba ground, the date invitation page fits better.
Polite RSVP chasers that don't nag
Reminders work. A Cochrane review of eight randomised trials found that text reminders raised attendance at scheduled appointments from 67.8% with no reminder to 78.6% (Gurol-Urganci et al., 2013). The trials were about clinic appointments, not parties, but forgetfulness works the same way.
People also expect events in their groups. In a survey of 633 WhatsApp users, 55.1% said personal issues and events were among what they shared most in groups (Koçak and Yüksek Vergiveren, 2019). Chase gently and once:
- Two days before, no reply: "No pressure at all, just finalising sticks and snacks. Can I count you in for Saturday?"
- Said maybe: "Keeping a pair of sticks with your name on them until Friday night. Tell me either way."
- Group stragglers: "18 Going so far. If you haven't tapped the event yet, a Maybe helps us plan food."
- Last chance, day-of morning: "Tonight, 8 pm, Gate 3. If you can make it even for one round, just turn up."
Stop at one chaser per person.
When a WhatsApp message is the wrong invitation
WhatsApp fails some guests. A broadcast never reaches anyone who has not saved your number, so a new neighbour silently misses it. Elders who don't use WhatsApp need a call or a printed notice on the lift door; the group-invite SMS WhatsApp sends to non-users expires after 3 days.
Our own page has limits too. The Be My Dandiya Partner page is a one-to-one invitation, so it is the wrong tool for a society, office or family group invite; send the group text and the Event instead. Its interface is in English only, it does not sell garba passes, and it will not find you a partner.
