Dhanteras 2027: Wednesday 27 October, Muhurat and Meaning
Dhanteras 2027 falls on Wednesday 27 October 2027, two days before Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October. In New Delhi the Trayodashi tithi runs from 1:03 AM to 10:49 PM that day, and Drik Panchang lists the evening puja muhurat as 6:42 PM to 8:14 PM. If Dhanteras is also your cue to start on Diwali greetings, SubhSandesh's nearest festival data comes from Raksha Bandhan 2026, not Diwali, and is a small sample of 89 pages: 49.4% were built on the festival day itself, and not one was made more than 7 days ahead.
Across the whole platform, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone. The rest of this page covers what the day marks, why its date moves every year, the 2025 decision that took Ayurveda Day off Dhanteras, and what World Gold Council figures say Indians actually bought last season.
What is Dhanteras?
Dhanteras, also called Dhantrayodashi, is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, observed on Krishna Trayodashi (the 13th lunar day of the waning fortnight) in the month of Kartik. It honours Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods in Hindu tradition, together with Lakshmi and Kubera, and its main puja is done in the evening after sunset.
The Dhanvantari connection is old. A 2023 review in the peer-reviewed journal Ayu traces it to the churning of the ocean in the Vishnu Purana, where Lakshmi appears soon after Dhanvantari, which is why Dhanvantari Jayanti is kept on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. The paper describes that as "a day before Lakshmi Puja"; on the 2027 calendar, a full day (Choti Diwali on 28 October) sits in between.
The same review says the observance widened during the national movement as a way to spread awareness of Ayurveda. It explains why the day has two halves: a morning puja for Dhanvantari and an evening one for wealth.
Dhanteras 2027 tithi, puja windows and Yama Deepam
All times below are IST for New Delhi, from Drik Panchang; your city's sunset moves the evening windows, so check a local panchang if you are in Chennai, Kolkata or abroad. The date itself does not change across India; only the clock times do.
- Trayodashi tithi: begins 1:03 AM, ends 10:49 PM on Wednesday 27 October 2027
- Dhanvantari puja, morning muhurat: 6:29 AM to 8:43 AM, 2 hours 14 minutes
- Yama Deepam, evening sandhya: 5:40 PM to 6:57 PM, 1 hour 17 minutes
- Lakshmi-Kubera puja muhurat: 6:42 PM to 8:14 PM, 1 hour 32 minutes, inside the Pradosh Kaal of 5:40 PM to 8:14 PM
The evening muhurat is simply where two windows overlap: it opens when Vrishabha lagna begins at 6:42 PM and closes when Pradosh Kaal ends at 8:14 PM. Dhanvantari's own puja, by contrast, belongs to the morning.
Yama Deepam is the one Dhanteras ritual that faces outward. A lamp for Yama, the god of death, is lit outside the house at dusk to ward off untimely death in the family. Because the tithi lasts until 10:49 PM, every one of these windows falls inside Trayodashi in 2027.
Why the date moves: 18 October 2025, 6 November 2026, 27 October 2027
Dhanteras follows a lunar tithi rather than a solar date, so it shifts by up to three weeks from one year to the next. Seen across eight years of Drik Panchang's table for New Delhi, the swing is wider than most people assume:
- 2024: Tuesday 29 October
- 2025: Saturday 18 October
- 2026: Friday 6 November
- 2027: Wednesday 27 October
- 2028: Sunday 15 October
- 2031: Wednesday 12 November
That drift is exactly what the Ministry of Ayush cited when it stopped tying a national observance to the festival. Its 2025 release says Dhanteras would vary between 15 October and 12 November over the coming decade, and the panchang's own dates for 2028 and 2031 land precisely on those two ends.
The jump from 2025 to 2026 is 19 days later in the calendar; 2027 then comes back 10 days earlier. Planning around "the usual Dhanteras week" fails in at least one of those years.
Ayurveda Day moved off Dhanteras in 2025
From 2016, the Ayu review notes, Dhanvantari Jayanti was also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day. That pairing has ended. A Press Information Bureau release of 13 May 2025 records that a Gazette Notification dated 23 March 2025 fixed Ayurveda Day on 23 September every year, a date chosen because it sits on the autumnal equinox, when day and night are nearly equal.
So on 27 October 2027, Dhanvantari Jayanti is still observed in temples and homes, but the government's Ayurveda Day will already have passed on Thursday 23 September 2027. None of the five top-ranking pages read for this post on 22 October 2026 mentions the change, so expect to see the two still described as one day.
What people buy on Dhanteras, and what India bought in 2025
Buying metal is the best-known custom, and both of the last two Dhanteras dates fell inside the fourth quarter the World Gold Council reports on. The table compares the two years in India; none of it is a suggestion to buy anything.
| India, World Gold Council data | 2024 | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras date (New Delhi panchang) | Tue 29 October | Sat 18 October | 11 days earlier |
| Gold jewellery consumption, full year | 563.4 tonnes | 430.5 tonnes | down 24% |
| Gold bar and coin demand, full year | 239.4 tonnes | 280.4 tonnes | up 17% |
| Gold bar and coin demand, October to December | 76.0 tonnes | 96.0 tonnes | up 26% |
The pattern is weight moving out of jewellery and into coins and bars as the price climbed. Each entry below covers the same four things: what it is, why it belongs to Dhanteras, the latest number, and what the number cannot tell you.
1. Gold jewellery
Jewellery is the default Dhanteras purchase, bought as adornment and as family wealth, and the World Gold Council's full-year review shows India's jewellery consumption fell from 563.4 tonnes in 2024 to 430.5 tonnes in 2025, down 24%, while fourth-quarter spending reached a record US$19bn. The council links that split to a 74% rise in the local gold price and to buyers keeping fixed budgets. These are quarterly and annual figures; no official body publishes a Dhanteras-day count.
2. Gold coins and bars
Small coins, often stamped with Lakshmi or Ganesha, are bought for the puja itself. Here the direction reversed: India's bar and coin demand rose from 239.4 tonnes in 2024 to 280.4 tonnes in 2025, up 17%, and the fourth quarter went from 76.0 to 96.0 tonnes. The council counts these as investment demand, so the figure mixes puja coins with larger bars bought as savings.
3. Lighter and 14-carat jewellery
Lower-carat pieces keep the custom affordable when prices climb. The council reports that 14k jewellery gained some traction in 2025, mainly among younger buyers in northern cities. It also records that much of the country stayed reluctant, because a lower carat weakens what many families buy gold for: long-term capital preservation.
4. Old gold exchanged or pledged
Not everyone brings new metal home: the same review names exchange of old jewellery as a key trend and puts retail bank loans backed by gold jewellery at INR 3.6 trillion at the end of November 2025, up 125% on a year earlier. That is a national figure for the season, not a Dhanteras one.
5. Silver, brass and steel utensils
A new vessel brought home on Trayodashi is the older, cheaper form of the same custom. No national body publishes Dhanteras utensil or silver sales, so this post prints no number rather than repeat a trade estimate it could not check.
Wishing someone on Dhanteras, and the one Diwali card worth making
SubhSandesh has no Diwali timing data yet, so the nearest evidence is Raksha Bandhan 2026: a one-day festival and a small sample of 89 pages. Of those, 49.4% were built on the festival day itself, 27.0% the day before, and none more than 7 days ahead.
Read across to Diwali 2027, a greeting made on Wednesday 27 October would arrive early, two days before most people start theirs. A five-day festival may spread the timing more than a one-day one did, so treat this as an analogue, not a forecast.
For the one person you want to wish properly, SubhSandesh's interactive Happy Diwali card is built for that evening. They find a diya at their door with a tag from you, light a row of wish diyas, colour a rangoli until your initials glow, write with a sparkler, and open sky lanterns holding up to six of your photos. It ends with a letter in a red-and-gold shagun liffafa and a box of mithai on a Shubh Deepavali card.
You pick love, family or friend mode and add a YouTube song or a Diwali favourite; it takes about five minutes and opens in any browser as a private link, with no app or account. Across the platform each page averages 11.1 views, so people do reopen them, though there is no Diwali usage data yet because the template is new.
When a Diwali greeting page is the wrong thing on Dhanteras
Dhanteras is a puja and shopping day, and a greeting page does nothing for either. It will not tell you a muhurat or a puja vidhi; a panchang does that.
It is also one page for one person. For a family WhatsApp group of thirty, a short text is the honest tool. For a grandparent who does not use a smartphone, a phone call at 7 PM beats any link, and with only 48.3% of views happening on phones, you cannot assume the recipient will open it on one.
One more caution: in a year when the gold price rose 74%, a wish built entirely around "dhan" can land badly with someone who is short of money. If the person you have in mind needs something other than a Diwali card, the full SubhSandesh template collection covers other occasions.
