Diwali Essay in English and Hindi, With Every Fact Checked
A good Diwali essay gives the date, says what is celebrated and why, and adds one detail from your own home, in an introduction, body and conclusion. For 2027 the key date is Friday, 29 October, when Lakshmi Puja falls on the new-moon night of Kartika, inside a five-day festival running from Dhanteras on 27 October to Bhai Dooj on 31 October.
Below are four original Diwali essay samples: 10 lines, about 150 words, about 300 words, and a short Hindi essay. Every historical fact in them is checked against a named source you can open. Read them as models to learn from, not as text to hand in under your name.
What does a Diwali essay need to cover in 2027?
A Diwali essay is a short descriptive composition about the festival of lights: when it falls, how families prepare and celebrate, and what it means. The word Deepavali joins the Sanskrit deepa (lamp) and avali (row), so the name itself means "a row of lamps".
A school essay needs five things in order: the name, the 2027 date, the preparations, the main night and a closing thought. A real family detail makes it memorable.
Diwali essay in 10 lines (Classes 1–4)
Ten lines suit younger students because each holds one idea. Line 2 uses the 2027 date verified on a panchang on 22 October 2026.

- Diwali reminds me that one small lamp can push back the dark.
Diwali essay in English, 150 words (Classes 5–7)
This sample keeps one personal detail per paragraph, which turns a list of facts into an essay.
Diwali, the Festival That Lights the Darkest Night
Diwali, or Deepavali, is the festival of lights, and its name means a row of lamps. In 2027 its main day, Lakshmi Puja, falls on Friday, 29 October, the new-moon night of Kartika, when the sky is at its darkest.
Preparations begin days earlier. My family cleans every corner of the house, my sister draws a rangoli at the door, and my father brings home fresh marigolds. On Diwali evening we light clay diyas along the balcony and pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Two days later, on Bhai Dooj, my sister puts a tilak on my forehead.
Diwali is not only a Hindu festival. Jains remember Lord Mahavira's nirvana that night, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, the release of Guru Hargobind.
For me, the best moment is carrying a plate of sweets to our neighbours. Diwali teaches me that light grows when it is shared.
Diwali essay in English, 300 words (Classes 8–10)
Older students are expected to explain, not only describe. This sample adds history a teacher can check: Al-Biruni's account of Dibali in Sachau's 1888 translation, the Jain Kalpa Sutra in Hermann Jacobi's 1884 translation and BBC Teach's account of Bandi Chhor Divas.
Diwali: A Thousand Years of Lamps
Diwali, or Deepavali, is India's festival of lights. In 2027 Lakshmi Puja falls on Friday, 29 October, the new-moon night of Kartika, and the five days of celebration run from Dhanteras on 27 October to Bhai Dooj on 31 October.
The festival is old enough to have been described by a foreign scholar. Around AD 1030, the Central Asian scholar Al-Biruni wrote that on the day called Dibali, people bathed, dressed in their best clothes, gave each other betel leaves and areca nuts, gave alms at temples and, at night, lit so many lamps that the air was perfectly clear. He recorded the reason people gave: on this day Lakshmi frees Bali, son of Virochana, from the underworld once a year.
Diwali also belongs to other faiths. The Jain Kalpa Sutra says that on the new-moon night when Lord Mahavira died, eighteen kings lit an illumination, saying that since the light of intelligence was gone, they would make a light of material things. Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas, remembering how Guru Hargobind was released from Gwalior Fort in 1619 with 52 princes and reached Amritsar while Diwali was being celebrated.
In my home, the week begins on Dhanteras, when my mother buys a new steel utensil and we light one lamp at the door. On the main night we perform Lakshmi Puja, light lamps on every windowsill and visit our neighbours with sweets. Bhai Dooj ends the festival with a tilak, a family lunch and a long call to my cousins abroad.
What I value most is that so many stories meet in one festival. Whether a family remembers Rama, Lakshmi, Mahavira or Guru Hargobind, everyone lights a lamp against the dark, and that shared act is the real meaning of Diwali.
Diwali essay in Hindi: a short sample (दीपावली पर निबंध)
Many schools ask for the essay in Hindi too. This six-sentence sample uses the same checked facts, with transliteration and an English gloss.
- Transliteration: Deepavali roshni ka tyohar hai. San 2027 mein Lakshmi Puja Shukravar, 29 October ko hogi. Shaam ko mitti ke diye jalakar Lakshmi-Ganesh ki puja ki jaati hai. Jain parivar isi raat Bhagwan Mahavir ke nirvan ko yaad karte hain aur Sikh Bandi Chhor Divas manate hain. Mujhe sabse achha tab lagta hai jab Dadi pehla diya mere haath se jalwati hain. Deepavali sikhati hai ki ek chhota diya bhi andhera kam kar sakta hai.
- English gloss: Deepavali is the festival of light. In 2027 Lakshmi Puja will be on Friday, 29 October. In the evening clay lamps are lit and Lakshmi and Ganesh are worshipped. Jain families remember Lord Mahavira's nirvana this night, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. I like it most when Grandmother has me light the first lamp. Deepavali teaches that even a small lamp can lessen the dark.
Which Diwali essay sample fits which class?
The four samples differ in length and in how many dated or sourced facts they carry. Word counts below exclude titles.
| Sample | Words | Dated or sourced facts | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lines | 115 | 5 | Classes 1–4, recitation |
| 150 words | 148 | 5 | Classes 5–7 |
| 300 words | 292 | 8 (three 2027 dates, AD 1030, Kalpa Sutra, Mahavira, 1619, 52 princes) | Classes 8–10 |
| Hindi, 6 sentences | 74 | 3 | Hindi paper, Classes 3–7 |
Length should come from explanation, not adjectives: the 300-word essay doubles the 150-word one by explaining the festival's history.
How to write your own Diwali essay: the 2-2-1 marking rule
CBSE's Class X English marking scheme for 2025–26 marks its analytical paragraph out of 5: 2 for content, 2 for organisation of ideas and 1 for accuracy. Your school may differ, but organisation clearly counts as much as content.
- Content: one dated fact and one personal detail no other student has.
- Organisation: one idea per paragraph: name and date, preparations, the main night, what it means to you.
- Accuracy: check spellings of Lakshmi, Mahavira and Hargobind, and never copy a date from an old essay page; one ranking page still says "November 9th Friday".
- No unsupported claims: "Diwali is 2,500 years old" appears on a popular essay page unsourced; Al-Biruni's AD 1030 account is a date you can defend.
- Write it yourself: use your own family's details and your own sentences; teachers notice copied paragraphs.
Delivering this as an assembly speech is a different skill, and full retellings of Rama's return belong in a story post, not a 300-word essay.
Wishing someone a happy Diwali on 29 October
SubhSandesh is a greetings site, not an essay tool, and nothing on it will write or check homework. Once the essay is done, there is usually one person to wish properly, such as a grandparent or a cousin in another city.
The interactive Happy Diwali card on SubhSandesh is built for that one person. They light a diya at their door with a tag from you, light a row of wish diyas, colour a rangoli until your initials glow, light sky lanterns holding up to 6 photos, and open a letter in a red-and-gold shagun liffafa. It takes about 5 minutes and opens in any browser, no app or account.
Across SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,725 of 57,456 views, measured 24 September 2026), and pages average 11.1 views each. No Diwali data exists yet; in our Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, the nearest festival analogue (n = 89 pages), 49.4% of pages were made on the festival day itself. For other occasions, browse every SubhSandesh template.
When a sample essay, or SubhSandesh, is the wrong help
A sample essay is the wrong help if your teacher wants your own experience or runs a plagiarism check. Use the samples for structure and checked facts, and write every sentence fresh.
SubhSandesh is the wrong tool for the essay itself or for wishing a whole class group. The card takes about 5 minutes per person, and a handwritten card suits a grandparent without a smartphone.
