- • At 100 words a minute, a one-minute Diwali speech is 100 words, two minutes 200 and three minutes 300; the three speeches here are written to exactly those counts.
- • Median pupils read aloud 97 words correct a minute in mid-Grade 3 and 133 in mid-Grade 5 (Hasbrouck and Tindal, 2017), against a 162-word median for adults (Brysbaert and Vantieghem, 2023).
- • Drik Panchang puts Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October 2027, with Dhanteras two days earlier and Bhai Dooj two days later; these are the dates the speeches quote.
- • After 12 weeks of therapy, 41 anxious adolescents looked at audience faces more often but their ums did not change, so practise eye contact rather than perfect fluency.

Diwali Speech for Students, Class by Class, Word-Counted
A Diwali speech for a school assembly needs about 100 words for every minute on stage, so a one-minute speech is roughly 100 words, a two-minute speech 200 and a three-minute speech 300. For scale, the median letter on SubhSandesh's miss-you pages is 88 words (n = 214 since July 2026), shorter than even the one-minute speech. Festival preparation also runs late: SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 figures, the closest festival analogue we have measured (n = 89), show 49.4% of pages made on the day itself and 27.0% on the eve.
Below are three original English speeches, one per class band and exactly counted, plus a short Hindi speech. Then come the 2027 dates they quote and stage-fear tips.
How long is a Diwali speech, and why 100 words a minute?
A Diwali speech is a short assembly talk that greets the audience, explains what the festival marks and ends on a wish. Its length is set by the time slot and the speaker's pace.
In the 2017 oral reading fluency norms by Hasbrouck and Tindal, the median pupil reads 97 words correct per minute in mid-Grade 3 and 133 in mid-Grade 5. They are American pupils reading fresh text, so treat this as a guide.
In Brysbaert and Vantieghem's 2023 study, 94 Dutch-speaking adults read aloud at a median of 162 words a minute. A child pausing for breath sits well below that, so 100 is the safer figure; on 22 October 2026, one top-five India sample labelled "two minutes" ran to 94 words.
Three original Diwali speeches in English, by class
Choose by the speaker's class: each length follows that age group's reading pace. Replace the bracketed name and class.
1. Classes 1 to 4, primary assembly: 100 words, one minute
At the mid-Grade 3 median of 97 words a minute, this takes about 60 seconds. It covers the date, the word and one story.
Good morning, respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. My name is [name], and I study in Class [class].
This year Diwali is on Friday, 29 October 2027. Its other name, Deepavali, describes a line of lamps, which is exactly what all our balconies become that night.
Long ago, the people of Ayodhya lit lamps to welcome Lord Rama home after fourteen years in the forest. We light them to say that darkness never gets the last word.
This Diwali, let us share our sweets, keep the night gentle for animals, and smile at everyone. Happy Diwali, and thank you!
2. Classes 5 to 8, middle-school assembly: 200 words, two minutes
The mid-Grade 5 median is 133, but stage pauses slow speakers, so this fills about two minutes. It covers all five days.
Good morning to our respected Principal, our teachers and all my dear friends. Today I want to talk about Diwali, not as one night, but as five days.
In 2027 the festival begins with Dhanteras on Wednesday, 27 October, when families clean their homes and bring home something new. Thursday, 28 October, is Choti Diwali, or Naraka Chaturdashi, when Lord Krishna is remembered for defeating the demon Narakasura.
The big night is Friday, 29 October: Lakshmi Puja, held under no moon. The darkest night of the month is the one we fill with the most light, and I think that is the cleverest idea in the whole festival.
Then Saturday, 30 October, is Govardhan Puja, when Krishna is remembered for lifting a hill to shelter the people of Gokul from the rain. Sunday, 31 October, is Bhai Dooj, a day for brothers and sisters.
Diwali also belongs to more people than we sometimes remember. Jains honour Lord Mahavira's nirvana, and Sikhs keep Bandi Chhor Divas, the very day Guru Hargobind walked free from Gwalior Fort.
So this year, let us light one extra diya for someone who is spending the festival alone, far from family. Happy Diwali, and thank you.
3. Classes 9 to 12 or college: 300 words, three minutes
It takes three minutes at 100 words a minute, under two at the adult median, so seniors should slow down. It argues one idea.
Respected Principal, teachers and friends, good morning. I have three minutes, so I will spend them on one small object: the clay diya.
On Friday, 29 October 2027, millions of these lamps will be lit across India and in homes far beyond it. Many are still shaped by hand, by a potter at a wheel, and dried in the sun. Before a diya holds any light, it is simply earth, water and fire.
The first lesson is that light can be shared without being lost. When you tilt one flame to light the next, the first flame does not get smaller. Knowledge works the same way: a teacher who explains something to forty students does not know it any less, and a friend who shares notes before an exam loses nothing.
The second lesson is about timing: Lakshmi Puja is held on amavasya, the new-moon night, the darkest night of the month. Our ancestors did not wait for an easy night to celebrate light. They chose the hardest one, which is worth remembering in a difficult exam week.
The third lesson is that this lamp belongs to many traditions. For many Hindu families it welcomes Lord Rama home to Ayodhya and invites Goddess Lakshmi in. Jain families light it for Mahavira's final liberation, and Sikh families for Bandi Chhor Divas, the homecoming of the sixth Guru Hargobind from Gwalior Fort.
So here is my request for this Diwali. Buy a few diyas from a potter near your home, so the hands that made them share the festival too. Light one for a neighbour who lives alone, and keep the evening calm for the dogs on our street.
One small flame can light a hundred others. Let us each be that flame this year, at home. Happy Diwali, and thank you.
A short Diwali speech in Hindi, about 25 seconds
This 40-word speech takes about 25 seconds. A transliteration and gloss follow.
आदरणीय प्रधानाचार्य जी, शिक्षकगण और प्यारे साथियों, सुप्रभात। इस वर्ष दीपावली शुक्रवार, 29 अक्टूबर 2027 को है।
एक दीया दूसरे दीये को जलाता है, फिर भी उसकी लौ कम नहीं होती। ख़ुशी भी बाँटने से बढ़ती है। शुभ दीपावली, धन्यवाद।
Transliteration: Aadarniya pradhanacharya ji, shikshakgan aur pyaare saathiyon, suprabhaat. Is varsh Deepavali Shukravaar, 29 October 2027 ko hai.
Ek diya doosre diye ko jalaata hai, phir bhi uski lau kam nahin hoti. Khushi bhi baantne se badhti hai. Shubh Deepavali, dhanyavaad.
English gloss: Respected Principal, teachers and dear friends, good morning. This year Deepavali is on Friday, 29 October 2027.
One lamp lights another, yet its own flame does not shrink. Happiness, too, grows when shared. Happy Deepavali, thank you.
Diwali 2027 dates a speech can safely quote
Every date above was checked against the Drik Panchang Diwali 2027 calendar on 22 October 2026. Dhanteras is Wednesday 27 October, Choti Diwali Thursday 28, Lakshmi Puja Friday 29, Govardhan Puja Saturday 30 and Bhai Dooj Sunday 31 October 2027.
Tamil Deepavali comes a day sooner in Drik Panchang, on Thursday, 28 October 2027. In Tamil Nadu, use the school's own calendar.
Word count and speaking time, compared
This converts each text into stage time at a child's pace and the adult median, with SubhSandesh's letter length as a yardstick.
| Text | Words | At 100 words a minute | At 162 words a minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classes 1–4 speech (English) | 100 | 60 seconds | 37 seconds |
| Classes 5–8 speech (English) | 200 | 2 minutes | 74 seconds |
| Classes 9–12 speech (English) | 300 | 3 minutes | 111 seconds |
| Hindi speech | 40 | 24 seconds | 15 seconds |
| SubhSandesh miss-you letter, median (n = 214) | 88 | 53 seconds | 33 seconds |
A speech written at an adult's pace runs long for a Class 4 child, so time it once with a stopwatch. The Hindi row is rougher, because both studies measured English or Dutch.
Delivery tips from research on children's stage fear
Kahlon and colleagues (2019) note that one in three people report anxiety when speaking before others, often fearing the mind going blank. In their trial, 27 adolescents aged 13 to 16 practised speeches before a virtual classroom for one 90-minute session, and their anxiety fell and stayed lower three months later.
In Velthuizen and colleagues' 2026 study, 41 socially anxious adolescents aged 11 to 17 gave a five-minute speech before and after 12 weeks of group therapy. Afterwards they looked at audience faces more often, but their ums and restarts did not change.
- Practise before people, not a mirror. Three run-throughs before family mirror what helped in 2019.
- Write a cue card. Note the first three words of each paragraph: four cues for one minute, seven for three.
- Pick three friendly faces. Left, centre and right; looking at faces is what changed in 2026.
- Do not drill out every "um". Twelve weeks of therapy did not shift them.
- Rehearse two days early. The Raksha Bandhan figures above show how late festival tasks slide.

Where SubhSandesh fits after the assembly, and where it does not
SubhSandesh does not write or time speeches, and its Diwali page is not a speech tool. It suits one relative who missed the assembly, perhaps a grandparent in another city.
For that person, the playable Diwali card from SubhSandesh opens on a diya at their doorstep carrying your tag, then has them colour a rangoli until your initials appear and unseal a letter from a shagun liffafa. Making it takes roughly five minutes, it carries up to six photos and it needs no app; a phone opens 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages.
To let them hear your child's voice, the Dedication radio-show page fits better. They find your station through static, then your recorded voice introduces a song.
