Diwali Wishes for Family: For Parents, Grandparents and Siblings
Good Diwali wishes for family name one thing that person did this year and reach them in a form they can take in: a call for a grandparent, a voice note for a parent who reads slowly, a typed line for a sibling. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone and the average page is viewed 11.1 times (views, not unique people), so a family greeting gets read on a small screen and reread later. Below are 16 original wishes for Diwali 2027 (Friday 29 October), notes on how older relatives receive them, and a comparison of call, voice note, text and paper.
What makes a Diwali wish right for family rather than friends?
A family Diwali wish is a greeting written for someone whose Diwali you already know from the inside: the same lamps, the same sweets, the same arguments about the rangoli. It works when it names a detail only the family shares, and fails when it reads like a line for a colleague.
The medium matters as much as the words. A 2026 study of older parents in 23 European countries (Arpino, Tosi and Bordone, Journals of Gerontology: Series B) found face-to-face and phone contact with children still widespread, while text and especially video contact were less common, with frequent video calls below 10% of parents in several countries. It is European data, not Indian, but the pattern is familiar.
16 Diwali wishes for family, by relationship
Each entry gives original wishes, the format that suits that person, and the best moment in Diwali week 2027.
1. For your mother
- "Maa, the kitchen has smelled of besan since Tuesday, which is how I know Diwali has started. Thank you for every year you made this house feel ready."
- "Happy Diwali, Mom. This year somebody else climbs the stool to hang the lantern. You have earned a Diwali spent sitting down."
- माँ, इस दिवाली दीया आप जलाइए, बाकी सारा काम हम पर छोड़ दीजिए। — Maa, is Diwali diya aap jalaiye, baaki saara kaam hum par chhod dijiye. — "Maa, this Diwali you light the lamp; leave every other job to us."
Best as a call, or a voice note if she reads slowly. Send it on the morning of 29 October.
2. For your father
- "Papa, you still check every diya twice before you go to sleep. This Diwali, I hope someone checks on you the same way."
- "Happy Diwali, Dad. The accounts can wait one evening. Tonight belongs to the family you kept them for."
Many fathers ignore a long text but pick up a call. Say the line out loud on Friday afternoon, then send it in writing so he can show his friends.
3. For mom and dad together
- "Mummy, Papa, you still disagree every year about where the rangoli should go. May this Diwali end with both of you being right."
- आप दोनों साथ हैं, यही हमारी सबसे बड़ी दिवाली है। — Aap dono saath hain, yahi hamari sabse badi Diwali hai. — "That the two of you are together is our biggest Diwali."
Send it to both on one call, not to the family group. If you cannot travel in 2027, add the date you will visit next; a fixed date reads warmer than "soon".
4. For grandparents who live with you
- "Nanaji, this year I will sit through the whole puja without looking at my phone. That is my Diwali gift to you."
- "Dadi, your story about lighting a hundred clay diyas with one matchbox is the reason I still light mine by hand. Happy Diwali."
Say it in person, at their eye level and away from background noise. If hearing is an issue, hand over the same words on a card in large letters after the puja on 29 October.
5. For grandparents in another city
- "Dadaji, the brass diya you gave me will be lit tonight at the same hour as yours. Happy Diwali from two cities and one family."
- नानी, आपकी बनाई गुझिया का स्वाद अभी तक याद है। इस दिवाली फ़ोन पर ही सही, आशीर्वाद दे दीजिए। — Nani, aapki banayi gujiya ka swaad abhi tak yaad hai. Is Diwali phone par hi sahi, aashirvaad de dijiye. — "Nani, I still remember the taste of your gujiya. Bless me this Diwali, even if only over the phone."
Best as a video call with someone at their end holding the phone, or a voice note they can replay louder. Call on Friday afternoon or Saturday 30 October, when the house is quieter.
6. For an elder brother or sister
- "Didi, you told me the kaju katli box was empty for twelve Diwalis running. I have checked. It was not. Happy Diwali anyway."
- "Bhaiya, thank you for being the one Mummy calls first about everything. Have a Diwali where you are in charge of nothing."
A typed message works for most siblings. Save something longer for Bhai Dooj on Sunday 31 October 2027.
7. For a younger brother or sister
- "To the sibling who unplugs my charger to charge their own phone: Happy Diwali. The lights look better when you are home."
- "Chhotu, may this Diwali bring you a good result, a full night's sleep and fewer hours on reels, in that order."
A text or a silly voice note works. Younger siblings want proof you thought of them, not a long letter.
8. For in-laws: one line, then keep it formal
- "Maaji, Babuji, your kitchen and ours now share one Diwali. Thank you for learning our habits as patiently as we learnt yours."
In-laws need आप and a specific thank-you. Our separate post on Diwali messages for family and friends covers in-laws, cousins and neighbours in depth.
How do parents and grandparents receive a Diwali message?
Older relatives often receive a message differently from how it was sent. The WHO fact sheet on hearing loss (3 March 2026) states that over 25% of people older than 60 live with disabling hearing loss, and its fact sheet on vision impairment (10 February 2026) names presbyopia as the main cause of near-vision impairment, at 826 million people.
In India, WhatsApp is often where elders already are. A 2025 qualitative study of 19 urban adults aged 55 and above (Tripathi and colleagues, Discover Mental Health) found they preferred WhatsApp for its ease of use and for staying connected with family and friends, and asked for simple language, visuals and fewer steps. A wish for a grandparent should be short, plain and easy to replay.
On SubhSandesh's "I miss you" template, only 13.6% of senders record a voice note (n = 214, two months of a romantic template, not Diwali or family data). For a grandparent who struggles with small text, your recorded voice is the easier gift.
Call, voice note, text or paper: compared for family
Four ways to deliver a family Diwali wish, with the number that matters for each.
| Format | Best for | What can go wrong | Number to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone or video call | Parents, grandparents who answer calls | Hearing loss, noisy house | Over 25% of people past 60 have disabling hearing loss (WHO, 2026) |
| Voice note | Grandparents in another city | They may not know how to replay it | 13.6% of SubhSandesh miss-you senders record one (n = 214) |
| Typed WhatsApp text | Siblings, parents who read easily | Small font, long paragraphs | 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views are on a phone |
| Handwritten card | Grandparents at home, anyone who keeps paper | Must be handed over or posted early | Diwali 2027 is Friday 29 October |
The takeaway: match the format to the person's ears and eyes first, then choose the words.
When to send family Diwali wishes in 2027
Diwali 2027 runs from Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October to Bhai Dooj on Sunday 31 October, with Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October, per the Drik Panchang Diwali 2027 calendar. Drik Panchang lists Tamil Deepavali on Thursday 28 October, while some Tamil Nadu holiday lists show 29 October, so ask relatives in the south which day they keep.
Festival pages tend to get built on the day itself: our nearest analogue, Raksha Bandhan 2026, had 49.4% of pages built on the festival day (n = 89, a different festival and a small sample). With elders, call on the morning or afternoon of 29 October rather than late at night.
Where SubhSandesh's Diwali page fits for family
SubhSandesh's Diwali page has a family mode that changes the default wishes, the blessing card and the reply. They light a diya at their door, light a row of diyas that each lift one of your wishes, open your letter from a shagun liffafa, and see up to six of your photos in the sky lanterns, which suits old family pictures. It opens in any browser with no app or account.
For a parent who uses a smartphone, you can make a family Diwali card on the Happy Diwali template and pair it with a call. For a grandparent who loved the radio, the Dedication page fits better: they drag a needle through static, land on your station and hear your real voice introduce a song.
When a family Diwali wish should not be a message at all
If your grandparents live in the same house, no message beats touching their feet and sitting beside them at the puja. A link is wrong for an elder without a smartphone or with severe vision loss; call instead. We have no Diwali usage data yet; every figure above is platform-wide, from Raksha Bandhan, or from the miss-you template.
A family group message is the weakest option. One line pasted into a group of 30 relatives names nobody, and the people who matter most get the same words as a distant uncle.
