Dussehra wishes for six traditions, from Ravan Dahan to Shubho Bijoya, Mysuru Dasara, apta 'sona' and Kullu Dussehra, with lines in five Indian languages and the 2026 catch: Bengal and Mysuru keep Vijayadashami a day after Delhi.

- • In 2026 North India keeps Dussehra on Tue 20 October, but Drik Panchang lists Bengal's Vijayadashami and the Mysuru palace calendar's Jumboo Savari on Wed 21 October.
- • Shubho Bijoya is said only after the goddess's immersion, with a pranam to elders and kolakuli (three embraces) among friends.
- • In Maharashtra the apta leaf is exchanged as 'sona' (gold); Kullu Dussehra begins on Vijayadashami and runs a week.
- • Send early: in SubhSandesh's nearest measured analogue, Raksha Bandhan 2026, 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself (n = 89).

Dussehra Wishes, Region by Region: Ravan Dahan to Shubho Bijoya
Dussehra wishes land best when they match the Dussehra the other person keeps. In 2026, North India burns Ravan on Tuesday 20 October, while Drik Panchang lists Bengal's Vijayadashami on Wednesday 21 October and the Mysuru palace calendar holds its Jumboo Savari on the 21st too. Timing matters more than polish: on SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself and 27.0% the day before (n = 89, a different festival, used here as the nearest measured analogue). And 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, so a wish that fits one WhatsApp screen is the safe default.
Below: what each region actually says, original wishes in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada and Telugu with romanised text and an English gloss, the 2026 and 2027 dates, and an honest note on when a personalised page is the wrong tool.
What is Dussehra, and why are there so many greetings for it?
Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami or Dasara, is the tenth day of the bright half of the month of Ashwin, the day after the nine nights of Navratri. Drik Panchang gives two victories for it: Rama killing Ravana, and Durga killing the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
Which victory a family celebrates decides the greeting. A Delhi household says "Happy Dussehra" after the effigy burns; a Kolkata household says "Shubho Bijoya" after the goddess is immersed; a Pune household hands over a leaf and calls it gold. One generic "victory of good over evil" line covers all of them, and fits none of them well.
Dussehra wishes, tradition by tradition
1. Ravan Dahan in North India
Who: Most of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, where Ramlila ends with a Ravan effigy burned at dusk. 2026 date: Tuesday 20 October; Drik Panchang's Vijay Muhurat for New Delhi is 1:59 PM to 2:45 PM. What people say: "Happy Dussehra" or "Vijayadashami ki hardik shubhkamnayein".
Putla to har saal jalta hai, is baar ghamand bhi jale. Shubh Vijayadashami! "The effigy burns every year; this time may the pride burn too."
- English: "May whatever has been sitting in your head like a ten-headed problem go up in smoke tonight. Happy Dussehra."
2. Shubho Bijoya in Bengal
Who: Bengali families everywhere, for whom Dashami is the last day of Durga Puja. 2026 date: Drik Panchang lists Durga Visarjan on Tuesday 20 October and "Bengal Vijayadashami" on Wednesday 21 October, so expect Bijoya greetings across both days.
What people say: In food writer Kalyan Karmakar's account of Bijoya in Kolkata (2021), "Shubho Bijoya" is said only after the immersion. Juniors do pranam by touching elders' feet, peers embrace three times and then fold their palms (kolakuli), and visits continue for days with tea, snacks and sweets.
- Bengali, to an elder: মা কৈলাসে ফিরলেন, আশীর্বাদটুকু রেখে গেলেন। প্রণাম নেবেন, শুভ বিজয়া। Ma Koilashe phirlen, ashirbadtuku rekhe gelen. Pronam neben, Shubho Bijoya. "Ma has gone back to Kailash and left her blessing behind. Please accept my pranam. Shubho Bijoya."
- Bengali, to a friend: শুভ বিজয়া! Shubho Bijoya! Kolakulita paona roilo, dekha holei. "Shubho Bijoya! I owe you the hug, first time we meet."
Send the elder's line as a call where you can. A text is fine for peers, but in Karmakar's telling the pranam is the custom, and a forwarded image is not a pranam.
3. Apta leaves as "sona" in Maharashtra
Who: Marathi families in Maharashtra and Goa. 2026 date: Dussehra, Tuesday 20 October.
What people do: The Goan (2019) describes men crossing the village boundary (simollanghan) and bringing home leaves of the Apta tree, which are offered as gold to the women who perform the aarti and exchanged among young and old. The same report notes the tree is also called Sona, and that its heart-shaped leaves are exchanged as gold.
He aaptyacha paan sona mhanun ghya; varshbhar tumcha ghar sonyasarkha ujalu de. Dasaryachya hardik shubhechha! "Take this apta leaf as gold; may your home shine like gold all year. Warm Dussehra wishes!"
- English, for a Marathi friend abroad: "No apta tree in Toronto, so here is the leaf in words. Consider yourself gifted gold."
4. Mysuru Dasara in Karnataka
Who: Karnataka's Nada Habba (state festival), which the official site dates to 1610. 2026 date: The Mysuru Dasara 2026 palace calendar runs the festival from 11 to 21 October, with Vijayadashami on Wednesday 21 October: Goddess Chamundeshwari receives pushparchane in the golden howdah between 4:10 PM and 4:35 PM, and the Jumboo Savari procession leaves the palace for Bannimantap after that.
Naadahabba Dasarada shubhashayagalu! Chamundeshwari taayi nimma manege nemmadi tarali. "Greetings on Dasara, our state festival! May Mother Chamundeshwari bring peace to your home."
- English: "Watching the Jumboo Savari on a phone screen still counts. Happy Dasara from far away."
5. Ayudha Puja and Vidyarambham in the South
Who: Workshops, offices, shops and vehicle owners across South India, and children starting school. 2026 date: Ayudha Puja falls on Tuesday 20 October in both Drik Panchang and the Mysuru palace calendar, which lists it under Mahanavami.
What people do: A study of Ayudha Puja at the Indian Institute of Science (Thomas and Geraci, Zygon, 2018) found scientists decorating labs and vehicles, priests leading the puja, workshops kept shut for two days after it, and faculty handing sweets to neighbouring labs. On Vijayadashami morning, Kerala families also hold Vidyarambham, a child's first writing of letters.
Meeru Dasara naadu modalupette prathi pani vijayavantam kaavaali. Vijayadashami shubhakankshalu! "May every task you begin on Dasara succeed. Vijayadashami greetings!"
- Kannada, for a colleague: ಆಯುಧ ಪೂಜೆಯ ದಿನ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಸಿಗಲಿ. Ayudha poojeya dina nimma kelasakke hosa shakti sigali. "On Ayudha Puja, may your work find new strength."
6. Kullu Dussehra in Himachal Pradesh
Who: The Kullu valley, where the festival works on a different clock. 2026 date: The Kullu district administration says Kullu Dussehra begins on Vijayadashami and lasts a week, with traditional songs, dances and dress, so it starts when the rest of North India is finishing.
Jab sabka Dussehra khatam hota hai, Kullu ka shuru hota hai. Saat din ki raunak mubarak! "When everyone else's Dussehra ends, Kullu's begins. Enjoy the seven days of colour!"
Dussehra 2026 and 2027 dates at a glance
These are the dates each tradition keeps, checked against Drik Panchang (New Delhi and Kolkata) and the Mysuru palace calendar.
| Tradition | Region | 2026 | 2027 | Greeting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ravan Dahan | North India | Tue 20 Oct | Sat 9 Oct | Happy Dussehra |
| Bijoya Dashami | Bengal | Tue 20 Oct (visarjan), Wed 21 Oct | Sun 10 Oct | Shubho Bijoya |
| Jumboo Savari | Mysuru, Karnataka | Wed 21 Oct | check the palace calendar | Dasarada shubhashayagalu |
| Ayudha Puja | South India | Tue 20 Oct | check local panchang | Ayudha Puja greetings |
| Kullu Dussehra | Himachal Pradesh | starts on Vijayadashami, runs a week | same rule | Hindi greetings |
The takeaway: if you are sending one broadcast message on 20 October 2026, your Bengali and Mysuru contacts are a day early. A second, tradition-specific line on the 21st lands better.
Happy Dussehra wishes for family, colleagues and friends
Most people send three kinds of message: one to elders, one to work, one to friends. Here are original lines for each, kept under 30 words so they fit a phone screen.
- Parents and elders: "Every Dussehra I count the battles you fought for us that nobody saw. Happy Vijayadashami. Touching your feet from here."
- Colleagues: "Wishing you a Dussehra that ends one long-pending task for good. See you after the holiday."
- A friend who just finished nine nights of garba: "Your feet have earned this rest day. Happy Dussehra, and well danced."
Is a dandiya invitation right for Dussehra?
Honestly, only partly. Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from 11 to 19 October, so the last garba night is the evening of Monday 19 October, the night before Dussehra.
The one case where it fits: you have one person in mind for next year's Navratri, or for the Sharad Purnima garba on the night of Sunday 25 October 2026. For that, the Be My Dandiya Partner invitation lets you write nine short lines, one for each night, add up to six photos, and send a private link.
Their No button gives up and turns into a second Yes after five tries, and a yes ends in a 1080×1920 Dandiya Pass sized for an Instagram Story. It is free to use (its page schema marks it isAccessibleForFree), the page itself is in English, and it is a one-to-one invitation: wrong for a family, society or office greeting.
If what you really want is a plan with that person after the festival, not a garba night, The Invitation fits better: they answer it, and a yes turns into a countdown to the day. For everything else, browse all SubhSandesh templates.
When a WhatsApp line beats a personalised page
For Dussehra, most of the time. Occasion-dated pages, every festival and wedding type together, are only 3.7% of what people build on SubhSandesh; 96.3% are romantic and everyday pages.
A page is worth it for exactly one person. A WhatsApp line is better for your building group, your office and your relatives, and a phone call is better for an elder who expects a Bijoya pranam. If you do make a page, 38.5% of creators add a password before sharing, which makes sense for anything personal.
