Key takeaways

  • Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 is Monday 14 September 2026; visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi is Friday 25 September 2026.
  • Tilak did not invent Ganesh Chaturthi. Peer-reviewed work traces the festival to Peshwa-era Maharashtra; from 1893 he made it sarvajanik — public — under a colonial government that restricted political assembly.
  • Ten days is arithmetic between two tithis: Anant Chaturdashi is the eleventh day from Chaturthi counted inclusively. Households immerse on the 1½th, 3rd, 5th or 7th day instead.
  • A number a student can quote: 49.6% of 45,656 shared-page views on SubhSandesh open on a phone — platform-wide across 15 page types, measured 8 September 2026.

Ganesh Chaturthi Essay: Model Paragraphs and Real History

A Ganesh Chaturthi essay needs five parts in one order: what the festival is, why it is celebrated, when it falls, how it is observed, and how it ends. Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 is Monday 14 September 2026, and visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi is Friday 25 September 2026.

The sentence that earns marks is the one nearly every model essay gets wrong: Ganesh worship is centuries older than Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and what changed in 1893 was that the festival was made sarvajanik — public — under a colonial government that watched every gathering.

Two quotable numbers, both measured on SubhSandesh on 8 September 2026 and both platform-wide across its 15 page types rather than Ganesh-specific: 49.6% of 45,656 shared-page views open on a phone, and 3,860 pages exist since March 2026. Below: structure, models at 100, 200 and 500 words in English and Hindi, and the history.

What a Ganesh Chaturthi essay has to contain

A Ganesh Chaturthi essay is a short composition on the Hindu festival marking the birth of Ganesha, observed on the fourth tithi of the bright half of Bhadrapada. A complete one answers five questions — what, why, when, how, and how it ends — and is marked on whether it names specifics rather than sentiments.

Schools set it at ten lines, 100, 200 or 500 words. The skeleton is the same at every length; you drop material from the bottom up.

Marks are lost on three things: no date, no place, and "joyous" four times. Two proper nouns and one date beat a paragraph of adjectives.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Ganesha, invoked before any beginning — a new shop, a wedding, the first page of a notebook — because his epithet is Vighnaharta, remover of obstacles. The puja is timed to Madhyahna, roughly midday, on the reasoning that Ganesha was born then.

The date moves each year because it follows a lunisolar calendar: Bhadrapada shukla chaturthi. That is 14 September in 2026, 4 September in 2027 and 23 August in 2028.

Households install a clay murti, offer durva grass, red hibiscus and modak, perform aarti morning and evening, then immerse it. The immersion is the argument, not an afterthought: the god is welcomed as a guest, hosted, and returned to water — which is why the murti should dissolve.

The history most Ganesh Chaturthi essays get wrong

Almost every essay page online says Tilak started Ganesh Chaturthi in 1893. That is not what happened, and the correction is the most interesting paragraph in your essay.

Ganpati worship in Maharashtra long predates him. In the peer-reviewed, open-access South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal, Borayin Larios traces the festival to Peshwa times (22 May 2018), when Ganpati was the kuladevatā of the ruling Chitpavan Brahmins and the Peshwas had already made his worship a major festival with idols "collectively worshipped and carried through the streets". Larios calls the nineteenth-century change a popular revival under Tilak, not an invention.

What Tilak did from 1893 was make it sarvajanik: public, subscription-funded, run by a neighbourhood mandal rather than a family. The Urban History Association's blog, drawing on Richard Cashman's The Myth of the Lokamanya (1975), dates the shift to 1893 in Bombay and Pune and names the Keshavji Naik Chawl mandal in Girgaum, founded that year, among the earliest. That is the point of the colonial context: assembly was restricted, and a religious procession was a crowd that could legally meet.

The administration understood this exactly. In a letter to Viceroy Curzon reproduced in the open-access volume Nations in the Empire (FedOAPress, 2024), the Governor of Bombay, Sandhurst, listed "the Shivaji and Ganapati movements" beside cow protection, the 1897 no-rent campaign and plague agitation as causes taken up by a Deccan class he called "clever, active and unscrupulous".

Name the cost too. A 2026 paper in Cogent Arts & Humanities argues Tilak adapted the format of Muharram processions, and that the strategy, effective as it was, "simultaneously initiated a process of religious demarcation" that marginalised the shared observance it borrowed from.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for 10 days

Because it runs between two named tithis and the gap is fixed. Ganesh Chaturthi is the fourth tithi of the waxing moon in Bhadrapada; visarjan for public mandals is Anant Chaturdashi, the fourteenth. Counted inclusively that is the eleventh day, which is why Ganeshotsav is called ten days long. In 2026: Monday 14 September to Friday 25 September.

Ten days is the mandal format, not the household rule. Families pick an odd number — a day and a half, or the third, fifth or seventh day. Nobody has a four-day Ganpati.

The ten-day public version is what Tilak's model standardised. Swapna Gopinath's open-access study of Ganesh Utsav in Mumbai (1 February 2019) describes a ten-day festival "encapsulating the whole city".

Model paragraphs at the lengths schools ask for

Copy the structure, not the sentences — a teacher who has read forty of these can tell. Each model carries a date and a proper noun.

100 words — English

Ganesh Chaturthi is the Hindu festival marking the birth of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It falls on the fourth day of the waxing moon in Bhadrapada, which in 2026 is Monday, 14 September. Families bring home a clay murti, offer durva grass, red flowers and modak, and perform aarti twice a day. Neighbourhood mandals build pandals and run music and drama programmes for ten days. The festival ends on Anant Chaturdashi, 25 September 2026, when the murti is carried in procession and immersed. Ganesh Chaturthi teaches that welcome, hospitality and letting go belong together.

200 words — English

Ganesh Chaturthi is among the most widely observed festivals in India, held in honour of Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, invoked before any new beginning. It falls on the fourth tithi of the bright half of Bhadrapada; in 2026 that is Monday, 14 September, and it closes with visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi, Friday, 25 September.

At home it begins with the sthapana of a clay murti. Durva grass, red hibiscus, fruit and modak are offered, aarti is sung morning and evening, and neighbours are invited for darshan. In Maharashtra, and now beyond it, mandals install large public murtis in pandals and run ten days of music, drama and community programmes.

This public form is younger than the worship itself. Ganpati was honoured in Maharashtra long before the colonial period, but from 1893 Bal Gangadhar Tilak urged neighbourhoods in Bombay and Pune to hold the festival as a sarvajanik, or public, event. Under a government that restricted political assembly, a religious gathering was one crowd that could still legally meet.

On the final day the murti is carried to water and immersed. Welcome, hosting and farewell are the whole festival.

500 words — the paragraph plan

Six paragraphs of roughly 85 words. One: the festival and the 2026 dates. Two: who Ganesha is and why he is invoked first. Three: observance at home — sthapana, durva, modak, aarti. Four: the sarvajanik history — Peshwa roots, 1893, colonial limits on assembly. Five: visarjan, Anant Chaturdashi, eco-friendly immersion. Six: a position, not a sentiment. Paragraph four separates your essay from the other thirty-nine, so write it first.

Where a SubhSandesh page is the wrong thing to hand in

A shareable web page is not an essay and cannot be handed in as one. Teachers want handwriting or a typed document; a link is not marked. Nothing on this site writes the homework above.

It cannot do the two things the festival needs either: put you in front of the mandap at Lalbaugcha Raja, or hand your grandmother a modak.

Where it works is the greeting you send once the essay is submitted. The Ganesh Chaturthi greeting page is one the recipient performs themselves: they offer the durva, kumkum, flowers and modak, the aarti thali circles while Karpur Gauram plays, and they write their own prarthana back. Every SubhSandesh template sits on one page. Across all 3,860 pages built on the platform since March 2026, spanning 15 page types and none Ganesh-specific yet, 96.1% of started pages are published and shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Monday 14 September 2026. The Ganeshotsav ends with visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi, Friday 25 September 2026. The date moves each year because it is set by the Hindu lunisolar calendar — Bhadrapada shukla chaturthi — not the Gregorian one.
Nobody started it in the sense the question implies. Ganpati worship in Maharashtra long predates the colonial period. What Bal Gangadhar Tilak did from 1893 was make the festival sarvajanik — public and communal — rather than a household rite.
Yes. Borayin Larios, writing in the peer-reviewed South Asia Multidisciplinary Academic Journal in 2018, traces the festival to Peshwa times, when Ganpati was the kuladevata of the ruling Chitpavan Brahmins and idols were already carried through the streets. Larios describes the nineteenth-century change as a popular revival, not an invention.
Households choose an odd number of days: after a day and a half, or on the third, fifth or seventh day. Ten days is the mandal format that spread with the public festival, not the household rule.
Sarvajanik means public or belonging to everyone. A sarvajanik Ganeshotsav is a subscription-funded, neighbourhood-organised celebration in a public pandal, run by a mandal, as opposed to a murti installed in one family's home. The Keshavji Naik Chawl mandal in Girgaum, founded in 1893, is among the earliest.
Use four paragraphs in Devanagari: what the festival is with the 2026 dates, home observance with durva and modak, the sarvajanik history from 1893, and visarjan. A full 200-word Hindi model is in the models section above; copy the structure rather than the sentences.
One line each for: who Ganesha is, the date, the clay murti, durva and modak, aarti, the pandal, the mandal programmes, visarjan, Anant Chaturdashi, and one closing line taking a position. Put the 2026 date in line two — it is the specific most ten-line essays leave out.
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the shukla paksha chaturthi of Bhadrapada, in August or September. Ganesh Jayanti falls on the shukla paksha chaturthi of Magha, in January or February, and is mainly observed in coastal Maharashtra.
Write that Tilak made the festival public in 1893, not that he created it. One accurate sentence — that a colonial government restricting political assembly could not easily ban a religious procession — will do more for the essay than a paragraph of adjectives.
