Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi: All Sixteen Upacharas, In Order

The Ganesh Chaturthi puja vidhi is sixteen acts of hospitality in a fixed order. Here is the samagri with real counts — 21 durva, 21 modak, one coconut — the sixteen upacharas in sequence, why a clay murti is wiped and not bathed, and what genuinely changes between a dedh-din and a ten-day Ganpati.

Key takeaways

  • The vidhi is a shodashopachara — sixteen acts of hospitality in fixed order — and the five-offering panchopachara is its legitimate short form for the middle days.
  • Offer 21 durva blades in seven bunches of three and 21 modak: Bühnemann records twenty-one as the number tied to Ganesha's offerings, and the Atharvashirsha is recited twenty-one times at abhisheka.
  • A clay murti is wiped, not bathed — abhisheka with milk and panchamrit belongs to metal and stone images.
  • There is no single canonical sixteen: the Ashvalayana Grihyasutra list and the common household list differ at five of the sixteen positions.
  • Across all 3,860 SubhSandesh pages spanning 15 page types, 49.6% of shared-page views are phone opens — platform-wide, not Ganesh-specific.

Ganesh Chaturthi Puja Vidhi: All Sixteen Upacharas, In Order

The Ganesh Chaturthi puja vidhi is a shodashopachara — sixteen acts of hospitality offered to a guest — performed on a murti that has first been woken by pranapratishtha. On Monday 14 September 2026 the sthapana is timed to the midday madhyahna window, which Drik Panchang puts at 11:20 AM to 1:48 PM for Mumbai, a span of two hours and 27 minutes. You need a chowki, a filled kalash, 21 durva blades, 21 modak and red flowers, and roughly forty minutes for the full sequence. Two numbers for the relatives who cannot be in the room: across all 3,860 pages SubhSandesh has created since March 2026, spanning 15 different page types, 49.6% of shared-page views are phone opens, and 96.1% of started pages are actually published and shared. Below: the samagri with real counts, the sixteen offerings in sequence, and what changes between a dedh-din and a ten-day installation.

What is the shodashopachara puja vidhi?

Shodashopachara means sixteen (shodasha) services (upachara). The logic is domestic hospitality: you seat a guest, wash their feet, offer water, bathe and dress them, feed them, and see them off. Ganesha is treated exactly as a visiting elder would be.

It is the reference form, not an elaborate one. Gudrun Bühnemann's 1988 study of Maharashtrian smarta practice calls the sixteen-service puja "the prototype of every puja", of which the five-offering panchopachara is a short form and festival pujas are expansions. So the Ganesh Chaturthi vidhi is the daily household puja, stretched.

Ganesh Chaturthi puja samagri: the list, with real quantities

Buy by count, not by vibe. The counts below are the ones that carry meaning; everything else is quantity-to-taste.

Seat and kalash. One chowki or low table, one red or yellow cloth, one copper or brass kalash. Bühnemann records the Maharashtrian kalash as filled with water plus sandalwood paste, unbroken rice, flowers, durva blades, one areca nut and one coin, then covered with mango twigs and a coconut. Five mango leaves, one whole coconut with the tuft intact.

Offerings. 21 durva blades, tied in bunches of three, so seven bunches. 21 modak. Red flowers, jaswand above all. Akshata — raw rice with a pinch of haldi and kumkum, about 100 g. Sandalwood paste, kumkum, haldi, gulal. A janeu if your family offers one.

Fire and light. Two ghee lamps, one either side. Camphor, roughly 10 tablets across ten days. Agarbatti or dhoop. A bell.

Naivedya. Modak first — Bühnemann notes every deity is held to have a favourite dish, and modaka is Ganapati's. Then jaggery, a banana or two, and whatever the family cooks.

The twenty-one is not arbitrary. Bühnemann records it as "the number connected with offerings of durva, modaka etc. to Ganesa", which is also why the Ganapati Atharvashirsha is recited twenty-one times during abhisheka.

The Ganesh Chaturthi puja vidhi in six stages

1. Ganpati sthapana — seating the murti

Face the murti east or north, on the draped chowki, inside the madhyahna window. Place the kalash to its right, the lamps either side.

Sprinkle water around the chowki. Nothing has been consecrated yet — at this point the murti is still clay.

2. Sankalpa — saying out loud what you are doing

Water, akshata and a flower in the right palm; state your name, gotra, the place, the tithi, and how many days you intend to keep the murti. Then pour the water out. The sankalpa is where a dedh-din observance and a ten-day one formally diverge, because the number of days is spoken here.

3. Pranapratishtha — inviting Ganesha into the clay

The pranapratishtha mantras invoke the deity's prana, jiva and vak-manas into the murti. Bühnemann notes the striking direction of travel in smarta practice: the deity is understood to come from the devotee's own heart into the image, and to return there at visarjan.

4. Shodashopachara — the sixteen offerings, in order

Working from the sixteen-service list Bühnemann reproduces from the appendix to the Ashvalayana Grihyasutra: 1. avahana (invocation) 2. asana (a seat) 3. padya (water for the feet) 4. arghya (water of welcome) 5. achamaniya (water to sip) 6. snana (bath) 7. vastra (garment) 8. upavita (sacred thread) 9. gandha (sandalwood paste) 10. pushpa (flowers) 11. dhupa (incense) 12. dipa (lamp) 13. naivedya (food) 14. mukha-vasa (mouth perfume) 15. stotra and pranama (hymn and prostration) 16. pradakshina and visarjana (circumambulation and dismissal).

5. Naivedya and aarti — modak, durva, camphor

Offer the 21 durva after gandha, three blades at a time, naming Ganesha with each. Place the modak in front, sprinkle water around the plate, then do the camphor aarti. The Hindu American Foundation's 16-step puja guide points out that five of the sixteen — gandham, pushpam, dhoopam, deepam, naivedyam — map onto the five senses, which is why those five survive as the short form on a rushed morning.

6. Uttar puja and visarjan — taking leave

On the last day the vidhi runs again in compressed form, ending in uttar puja: you ask Ganesha to leave the image and return next year. Only then is the murti lifted. Bühnemann's informants place the moved flowers, nirmalya and used materials in the water alongside it, because water is treated as the correct disposal for objects loaded with sacred power.

The sixteen are not one fixed list, and clay changes two of them

This is where most guides quietly mislead. There is no single canonical sixteen. The Grihyasutra list above and the household list taught today diverge at five of the sixteen positions:

PositionAshvalayana Grihyasutra appendix (Bühnemann 1988)Common household list (Hindu American Foundation)
4arghya (water of welcome)madhuparka (honey, curd and ghee)
8upavita (sacred thread)abharana (ornaments)
14mukha-vasa (mouth perfume)tambula (betel leaf and areca nut)
15stotra and pranamakarpura niranjana (camphor aarti)
16pradakshina and visarjanapradakshina and namaskara

Both are sixteen; both are correct within their own lineage. If your family's paddhati differs from a printed list, your family's paddhati wins.

Snana is the step people get wrong. Bühnemann is explicit that clay and painted icons "are wiped but not bathed as they would easily dissolve" — abhisheka with milk and panchamrit belongs to metal and stone images. On a shadu-mati Ganpati, snana means a damp cloth and a few drops from a spoon.

The same source draws the distinction that makes the festival coherent: movable icons receive avahana and visarjana, immovable temple icons receive neither. A clay Ganpati is the movable case by design, and its impermanence is the condition that lets both the invocation and the dismissal happen.

Dedh-din, five days or ten: what actually changes

Very little of the vidhi changes, and that surprises people. The pranapratishtha happens once and the uttar puja happens once. What scales is the middle.

Anthropologists Peter Maňo and Dimitris Xygalatas, reporting fieldwork among Mauritian Hindus in Slovenský národopis in 2022, found that devotees choose rituals they judge "appropriate" in structure and "proportionate" in cost to what they are asking for. A dedh-din Ganpati is not a lesser puja on that reading; it is a calibrated one.

In 2026 the shorter observances immerse on 15, 16, 18 or 20 September, and Anant Chaturdashi falls on Friday 25 September. On the days in between, most households drop to the panchopachara five — gandha, pushpa, dhupa, dipa, naivedya — plus the morning and evening aarti, and save the full sixteen for day one and the last day.

Sending the puja to someone who cannot be in the room

The reason this matters is that the household is where the puja actually lives. Pew Research Center's 2021 survey of 29,999 Indian adults found 81% keep an altar, shrine or religious symbol at home, and 76% of Hindus perform puja at home at least weekly against 53% at a temple — with Hindu women at 84% versus men at 68%. Home is the default site of worship, which is exactly why being away from home during Ganeshotsav stings.

Only the last row gives them something to do. The Ganesh Chaturthi page the recipient performs themselves walks them through the same offerings in the same order — they place the durva, the kumkum, the flowers and the modak, the aarti thali circles while Karpur Gauram plays, and they write their own prarthana back.

Platform-wide, 42.1% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect a page before sending it (1,625 of 3,860 pages, measured 2026-09-08), which matters when the link goes into a family group of forty. Other occasions sit in the full SubhSandesh template gallery.

When a Ganesh Chaturthi page is the wrong choice

It cannot hand anyone a modak, cannot put a person in front of your mandap at aarti time, and does not smell of camphor. If they are in the same city, go and get them.

It is also wrong for a grandparent who does not use a browser, and for a mandal's public puja, which needs volunteers and a permission letter. The platform-wide median gap between a page's first save and its last edit is 6.8 hours (sampled on /love-gf, n=1,065, measured 2026-09-08) — a page started at 10 AM on 14 September will not be done before the muhurat closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The shodashopachara is a householder's rite, not a priestly one, and Bühnemann's study describes it as the ordinary daily puja of a smarta household. A pandit is normally called only where a family wants the long Sanskrit prayoga recited correctly, and Pew's 2021 survey found 78% of Indians ever invite a religious leader home for rites, not that they must.
Seat the murti so it faces east or north, which puts you facing west or south while you offer. If the room only allows one workable wall, take the wall — the direction is a preference in household practice, not a condition of the pranapratishtha.
Twenty-one blades, tied in seven bunches of three. Durva is Cynodon dactylon, the same species as common Indian lawn grass, so blades pulled from a clean patch are acceptable — rinse them and avoid anything sprayed with weedkiller.
Most household traditions leave tulsi out of a Ganesha puja, on the strength of a Puranic exchange of curses between Tulsi and Ganesha. Durva takes its place. Tulsi is standard for Vishnu and Krishna, which is where the habit comes from.
Do it anyway. Drik Panchang gives Mumbai a 2 hour 27 minute madhyahna window on 14 September 2026, which is generous, but an incomplete or skipped puja is worse than a late one. Say the sankalpa, do the pranapratishtha, and continue.
Yes, and in most homes they already do the daily puja. Pew Research Center found 84% of Hindu women perform puja at home at least weekly against 68% of Hindu men. Nothing in the shodashopachara sequence is restricted by gender in ordinary household practice.
No. Day one and the final day carry the full sixteen. In between, most households run the panchopachara five — gandha, pushpa, dhupa, dipa, naivedya — plus morning and evening aarti, which is a recognised short form rather than a shortcut.
They go into the water with the murti at visarjan. Bühnemann records that materials used in worship are immersed or given away because water is treated as the correct place to deposit objects loaded with sacred power. Do not put them in the household bin.
Not if it was consecrated for this festival. A movable clay icon receives both avahana and visarjana, so the invitation is explicitly temporary. A permanent brass or silver Ganesha kept in the home shrine is a separate murti and is never immersed.
Bought modak are fine, and so is a plate of jaggery, coconut and banana. Bühnemann notes only that each deity has a favourite dish, modaka in Ganapati's case; the vidhi does not specify a recipe or a count beyond the customary twenty-one.
The ritual logic argues against it. The invocation and dismissal pair works because the image is impermanent, and shadu-mati clay dissolves as the vidhi expects. A POP murti also cannot take snana at all, since it neither absorbs nor dissolves cleanly.
Around forty minutes at a steady pace with the mantras read rather than recited from memory, plus preparation time for the kalash and the naivedya. A household running the panchopachara short form on the middle days finishes in ten.
