- • In Telugu the festival is Vinayaka Chavithi, not Ganesh Chaturthi: Brown's 1903 dictionary defines చవితి at page 445 as "the fourth day of the moon's age".
- • శుభాకాంక్షలు is literally "auspicious wishes" — శుభ (auspicious, p. 1262) plus ఆకాంక్ష (wish, p. 107). అభినందనలు means congratulations and is wrong for a festival.
- • Send script and transliteration together: in the ICON-2015 Telugu-English corpus, 8,828 of 29,503 social-media tokens were Telugu and every one was romanised, with four competing spellings recorded for a single word.
- • Vinayaka Chavithi 2026 is Monday 14 September; nimajjanam is Friday 25 September. Hyderabad's Madhyahna muhurat runs 10:58 AM to 1:25 PM.
- • 49.6% of the 45,656 views SubhSandesh pages have recorded open on a phone — platform-wide across all 15 page types, not Ganesh pages specifically.

Ganesh Chaturthi Wishes in Telugu, Written as Vinayaka Chavithi
Ganesh Chaturthi wishes in Telugu rarely contain the words "Ganesh Chaturthi". In Telugu the festival is వినాయక చవితి — Vinayaka Chavithi — and the wishes word is శుభాకాంక్షలు (subhakankshalu), so the plain greeting is వినాయక చవితి శుభాకాంక్షలు. Send it in Telugu script with a Roman transliteration under it, because the reader is almost certainly on a phone: across all 45,656 recorded views of SubhSandesh pages — platform-wide across 15 page types, not Ganesh pages specifically — 49.6% open on a phone.
On the same platform-wide dataset, 96.1% of started pages (3,708 of 3,860) get published and shared. Below: nine wishes in Telugu with transliteration and a literal gloss, what శుభాకాంక్షలు means word by word, script versus Roman letters, and the Hyderabad timings for Monday 14 September 2026.
What Telugu speakers actually call Ganesh Chaturthi
Vinayaka Chavithi is the Telugu name for Ganesh Chaturthi, built from two ordinary words. Charles Philip Brown's Telugu–English Dictionary of 1903 defines చవితి (chaviti) at page 445 as "the fourth day of the moon's age" and marks it native Telugu; వినాయకుడు at page 1184 is a Sanskrit borrowing, "a name of Gaṇesa".
So చవితి does the work that चतुर्थी does in Hindi and Marathi, and Brown records both the చవితి and చవుతి spellings. You will see గణేష్ చతుర్థి in Telugu news headlines because that is the pan-Indian name transliterated back into Telugu letters, but on a personal message it reads foreign. Writing to a Telugu family, write Vinayaka Chavithi.
Nine Vinayaka Chavithi wishes in Telugu, with transliteration and meaning
Transliterations use the Roman spelling people type on a phone, not a diacritic scheme, so either line can be pasted as it stands.
1. The plain one, for anybody
మీకు, మీ కుటుంబానికి వినాయక చవితి శుభాకాంక్షలు.
Meeku, mee kutumbaniki Vinayaka Chavithi subhakankshalu.
"Vinayaka Chavithi wishes to you and to your family."
For the broadcast list, colleagues and the apartment group. Nothing in it assumes closeness, so it is safe with an elder and a stranger alike.
2. The obstacle one
మీ జీవితంలోని విఘ్నాలన్నీ తొలగిపోవాలని విఘ్నేశ్వరుడిని ప్రార్థిస్తున్నాను.
Mee jeevitanloni vighnalanni tolagipovalani Vighneswarudini prarthistunnanu.
"I pray to Vighneshwara that every obstacle in your life is removed."
For someone starting something — a job, an exam, a shop. విఘ్నేశ్వరుడు, lord of obstacles, is the name Telugu households pray to far more often than గణపతి.
3. For an elder, asking for their blessing
మీ ఆశీస్సులు మా కుటుంబంపై ఎప్పుడూ ఉండాలి. వినాయక చవితి శుభాకాంక్షలు.
Mee aaseessulu maa kutumbampai eppudoo undali. Vinayaka Chavithi subhakankshalu.
"May your blessings always rest on our family. Vinayaka Chavithi wishes."
A Telugu greeting to a parent, in-law or teacher asks for the blessing rather than granting one. Wishing prosperity down at someone senior is the commonest tone error in translated cards.
4. The naivedyam line
ఉండ్రాళ్ళు, కుడుములు, పాయసం — ఈ చవితి మీ ఇల్లు నైవేద్యంతో నిండాలి.
Undrallu, kudumulu, payasam — ee Chavithi mee illu naivedyamto nindali.
"Undrallu, kudumulu, payasam — may your house be full of offerings this Chavithi."
Brown lists కుడుము at page 293 as Telugu for "a bun or cake boiled in steam", glossed with the Sanskrit మోదకము. The steamed offering has its own Telugu name; undrallu is the rice-flour version.
5. For someone who has had a bad year
ఈ సంవత్సరం మీరు పడిన కష్టాలన్నీ ఆ ఏకదంతుడు తీసుకెళ్ళిపోవాలి.
Ee samvatsaram meeru padina kashtalanni aa Ekadantudu teesukellipovali.
"May Ekadanta carry away every hardship you have borne this year."
It names the trouble instead of talking around it, which is why it works where a generic prosperity wish would sting. Ekadanta, "one tusk", is the god who took a loss and kept going.
6. The invitation to your own puja
మా ఇంట వినాయకుడిని ప్రతిష్ఠించాము. పూజకు, ప్రసాదానికి తప్పకుండా రండి.
Maa inta Vinayakudini pratishthinchamu. Poojaku, prasadaniki tappakunda randi.
"We have installed Vinayaka at our house. Do come for the puja and the prasadam."
Send it on the evening of 13 September 2026. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the household idol is the default and the street pandal the addition — the reverse of the Mumbai pattern.
7. The one for a close friend
నీ కష్టాలన్నీ ఆ బొజ్జ గణపయ్య మోసుకెళ్ళిపోవాలిరా. హ్యాపీ వినాయక చవితి!
Nee kashtalanni aa bojja Ganapayya mosukellipovalira. Happy Vinayaka Chavithi!
"May that pot-bellied Ganapayya carry off all your troubles, da. Happy Vinayaka Chavithi!"
బొజ్జ గణపయ్య comes from the children's rhyme every Telugu child learns; it is affectionate, not irreverent. The -రా ending is a different matter — use it only with people you already speak to that way.
8. The short one for a status or caption
విఘ్నాలు తొలగాలి, విజయాలు దక్కాలి. వినాయక చవితి శుభాకాంక్షలు.
Vighnalu tolagali, vijayalu dakkali. Vinayaka Chavithi subhakankshalu.
"May obstacles clear and victories come. Vinayaka Chavithi wishes."
Seven words in Telugu, short enough to sit over a photo without wrapping. Use this one as a Ganesh Chaturthi quote in Telugu on an Instagram story or WhatsApp status.
9. For family outside the Telugu states
ఊరికి దూరంగా ఉన్నా, ఈ చవితి మీ ఇంట కూడా వినాయకుడు కొలువుండాలి.
Ooriki dooranga unna, ee Chavithi mee inta kooda Vinayakudu koluvundali.
"Far from home as you are, may Vinayaka be seated in your house too this Chavithi."
ఊరు means the home town specifically, not the country, and కొలువు is a deity seated in state. Neither survives into English, which is the argument for sending the Telugu line.
What శుభాకాంక్షలు means, word by word
శుభాకాంక్షలు is two Sanskrit words plus a Telugu plural. Brown defines శుభము at page 1262 as "good, happy, lucky, blessed, fortunate" and ఆకాంక్ష at page 107 as "wish, desire", and the -లు is the ordinary plural ending. Literally: auspicious wishes.
That is why శుభాకాంక్షలు is right for a festival and అభినందనలు (abhinandanalu) is not: abhinandanalu is congratulations, which belongs on a promotion, not a tithi. If a card you were sent says అభినందనలు on Chavithi, it went through a machine.
Telugu script or Roman letters: what people actually type
Send both, because people write Telugu in Roman letters and spell it inconsistently when they do. In the ICON-2015 English–Telugu code-mixed dataset of Facebook posts, comments, tweets and WhatsApp conversations, 1,987 sentences broke into 29,503 tokens, of which 8,828 (29.92%) were tagged Telugu and 8,886 (30.11%) English — and every Telugu token in it is romanised.
Gundapu and Mamidi's 2020 paper records the problem plainly: the Telugu word for "who" appears in that corpus as avaru, evaru, aivaru and yevaru. There is no agreed romanisation, so a Roman-only wish is readable but arbitrary.
Script-only has the opposite failure: many fluent Telugu speakers under 30 were schooled in English medium and read the script slowly or not at all. Two lines, script then transliteration, cover both.
The patri and the katha, which is what a Telugu wish is pointing at
Two things make Vinayaka Chavithi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana its own festival rather than a regional spelling: the patri and the katha.
పత్రి is a Brown headword at page 707, defined as "leaves used in worship" and illustrated with a Vemana verse — భక్తిలేని పూజ పత్రిచేటు, worship without devotion wastes the leaves. The prescribed set is the ఏకవింశతి పత్రి, twenty-one leaves. A 2025 open-access review by two Telangana botany faculty catalogues them, naming Aegle marmelos (bilva), Ocimum sanctum (tulasi), Nelumbo nucifera and Calotropis gigantea (arka) among the twenty-one, and notes the list varies by region.
The durva grass in it is గరిక (garika), which Brown records at page 358 as the Telugu name for Sanskrit దూర్వ.
The second is the వినాయక వ్రత కథ. The vratam is not done until the katha is read aloud, and it ends with Krishna falsely accused over the Syamantaka gem after seeing the Chavithi moon. That is why Drik Panchang publishes a moon-avoidance window — 08:45 AM to 08:17 PM for Hyderabad on 14 September 2026, with the Madhyahna puja muhurat at 10:58 AM to 01:25 PM — and why the katha still circulates as its own printed booklet, such as the Telugu dwipada rendering by Chellapilla Bangareswara Sarma issued at Guntur on 15 July 1996.
A wish naming the patri or the katha says something an English "Happy Ganesh Chaturthi" cannot. If you want the person on the other end to do something rather than read something, the Ganesh Chaturthi page the recipient performs themselves hands them the durva, kumkum, flowers and modak to offer, and takes their own prarthana back.
Four ways to send a Vinayaka Chavithi wish, compared
The choice comes down to whether the Telugu survives as text and whether the other person can reply in the same place.
| Format | Telugu script stays as text | Reply happens where the wish is | SubhSandesh platform-wide figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp message in Telugu | Yes | Yes, in the chat | — |
| Forwarded greeting image | No — baked into pixels | No, only a separate reply | — |
| Instagram story with a Telugu quote | Usually, as a text layer | No, DM only | — |
| A personalised page sent as a link | Yes | Yes, on the page itself | 49.6% of 45,656 views open on a phone; 42.1% of 3,860 creators password-protect before sharing |
Both percentages are platform-wide across all 15 SubhSandesh page types, not Ganesh-specific: the template has produced no Ganesh pages yet. The forwarded JPEG is the format most Telugu wishes travel in and the worst of the four — the script is unsearchable, unselectable and invisible to a screen reader.
When a Telugu wishes page is the wrong thing to send
A page cannot hand anyone a kudumu. If you are in the same city on 14 September 2026, go to the house, take the patri, sit through the katha and eat the prasadam. A link instead is worse, not more modern.
It is also wrong for the grandparent who does not open links. That 49.6% mobile figure is platform-wide across 15 page types, and its flip side is that half of all views are not on a phone.
Skip the password too. 42.1% of SubhSandesh creators lock a page before sharing, which is right for something private, but a festival greeting behind a password only adds a step. For another occasion, browse the other SubhSandesh templates.
