Ganpati Visarjan 2026: Dates, Muhurat and the Water Question

Ganpati visarjan 2026 falls on Friday 25 September, Anant Chaturdashi, eleven days after Ganesh Chaturthi on Monday 14 September. Shorter observances immerse on 15 September (dedh din), 16 September (third day), 18 September (fifth day) or 20 September (seventh day). Two SubhSandesh numbers before you plan the day, both platform-wide across all 15 page types the site hosts rather than Ganesh-specific: 49.6% of the 45,656 shared-page views recorded so far are opened on a phone, and 96.1% of the 3,860 pages people start get published and shared. Visarjan is the one day of the ten when half the family is watching from somewhere else. Below are all six 2026 immersion days with Mumbai muhurat windows, why the idol goes into water at all, and what measured water quality does afterwards.

What is ganpati visarjan?

Ganpati visarjan is the ritual immersion of the Ganesha idol in water on the closing day of Ganeshotsav. It is the second half of a rite that opened with pranapratishtha — the invocation that seated the deity in the clay — so the immersion dissolves the form and releases what was invited into it.

The idol gets a final uttarpuja and a last offering of coconut, modak and durva, then leaves in procession. Drik Panchang notes the popular immersion days all fall on odd counts from Chaturthi — first, third, fifth, seventh — and that Anant Chaturdashi, the largest, is the eleventh day rather than the tenth.

Ganpati visarjan 2026 start and end date: all six immersion days

Ganeshotsav 2026 runs Monday 14 September to Friday 25 September, with six immersion days inside that window. Every timing below is the Mumbai choghadiya window published by Drik Panchang for 2026; sunrise shifts them across India, so check your own city.

1. Same day — Monday 14 September 2026

Immersion on Chaturthi itself, straight after the puja, kept mostly by offices, shops and households doing a one-day sthapana. The auspicious stretch runs 2:06 PM to 6:42 PM, with a further Labha window 11:06 PM to 12:34 AM. It is the least common of the six, because most families want at least one night with Bappa in the house.

2. Dedh din — Tuesday 15 September 2026

The classic Maharashtrian "one and a half day" visarjan: installed at madhyahna on Chaturthi, immersed in the second half of the next day. Windows are 12:34 PM to 2:05 PM and 3:37 PM to 5:09 PM. It is the dominant household pattern in Mumbai, Pune and the Konkan, and why the first big queues form on the Tuesday.

3. Third day — Wednesday 16 September 2026

For families who keep Bappa for the Gauri-Ganpati stretch or simply prefer three days. The morning Shubha window is 11:01 AM to 12:33 PM, then Chara and Labha from 3:37 PM to 6:40 PM. Third-day immersions are heavy in Nagpur and Vidarbha; civic bodies usually staff artificial ponds from this day onward.

4. Fifth day — Friday 18 September 2026

The widest usable window of the six: 6:27 AM to 11:01 AM, then 12:32 PM to 2:04 PM. Common with housing societies that cannot spare a full ten days of volunteers. A Friday immersion competes with weekday traffic, so most societies start before 9 AM.

5. Seventh day — Sunday 20 September 2026

Kept by mandals and larger households who want a full week but not the Anant Chaturdashi crush. The window is 7:58 AM to 12:32 PM, with an evening stretch 6:37 PM to 11:03 PM. It falls on a Sunday in 2026, so expect artificial ponds in Mumbai and Pune to be near capacity by late morning.

6. Anant Chaturdashi — Friday 25 September 2026

The main ganpati visarjan 2026 date and the end of the festival: Chaturdashi tithi begins 11:18 PM on 24 September and ends 11:06 PM on 25 September. The morning window is 6:28 AM to 10:59 AM, the afternoon Shubha window 12:30 PM to 2:01 PM. Big mandals march for hours and reach the water past midnight; that is normal and does not invalidate the rite.

Why ganpati visarjan is done in water

The idol is made of earth, and water returns earth to earth. Traditional idols are shaped from river or estuarine clay, so immersion dissolves the form back into the medium it came from — the logic that makes the murti temporary by design rather than a permanent object of worship. CPCB's guidelines open by noting that "traditionally, clay is used to make Ganesh idols".

There is a second reason, and it is social rather than theological. Ten days of puja happen indoors; the immersion is the one part of Ganeshotsav that puts the whole neighbourhood on the road at once.

What immersion actually does to a lake

This is the part every visarjan explainer skips, and it is measurable. A peer-reviewed study of three Nagpur lakes, published open-access in SpringerPlus in November 2014, sampled water before and after the immersion season. Dissolved oxygen fell from 4.09–5.29 mg/L to 0.89–2.34 mg/L — below the level most freshwater fish can survive.

Sulphate, which comes overwhelmingly from plaster of Paris, rose 2.7 to 3.2 times, from 43.9–69.2 mg/L to 144.5–187.3 mg/L. Cadmium in the water went from 0.019–0.034 mg/L to 0.048–0.079 mg/L, against a BIS permissible limit of 0.01 mg/L. In Tilapia muscle from Gandhisagar lake, lead and cadmium reached 0.83 and 0.47 µg/g after immersion.

Maharashtra's own regulatory data says the same thing at lower intensity. A 2021 analysis of MPCB monitoring data for Mahad, 2016 to 2018, found chemical oxygen demand at Dadli Bridge rising from an average 14.67 mg/L before the festival to 24.00 mg/L after, and total dissolved solids from 90.00 to 120.33 mg/L. The effect is seasonal, and it is caused by material choice rather than by the ritual.

Four ways to immerse in 2026, compared

Mumbai handled 1,97,114 immersions on the final day of Ganeshotsav 2025 — 1,81,375 household idols, 10,148 mandal idols and 5,591 Gauri-Hartalika idols — across 70 natural sites and 290-plus artificial ponds, roughly 40% of them in the artificial ponds.

Material matters more than venue: a shadu clay idol in a bucket produces nothing worth measuring, while a painted PoP idol pollutes an artificial pond as reliably as a lake.

CPCB's Revised Guidelines for Idol Immersion, 12 May 2020, spell out the home method: keep the idol fully immersed in a bucket until it dissolves, add alum or another coagulant, stir vigorously for at least 30 seconds and slowly for another 30, let it settle, then use the clear water for the garden and dry the settled mud for a plant pot or next year's idol. The same document says PoP idols "shall be banned" and prohibits thermocol, single-use plastic and oil paints — but it is a guideline, not a statute, and enforcement has been uneven, so a shop's "eco-friendly" label is worth nothing on its own.

Sending the visarjan to people who could not be at the ghat

Visarjan is the day the family is most scattered — someone is on a shift, someone is in another city, someone left for a job abroad in March. The aarti still happened, and they were not in it.

A Ganesh Chaturthi page the recipient performs themselves works here because it is not a photo of your puja: they offer the durva, kumkum, flowers and modak, the aarti thali circles while Karpur Gauram plays, and they write their own prarthana back to you. Sent on the evening of the 25th, it gives the person who missed the immersion something to do rather than something to scroll past.

Where a SubhSandesh page is the wrong choice

A page cannot replace being at the mandap, and it cannot hand anyone a modak. If the person is in the same city and can reach the visarjan, invite them; a link is a worse version of a shared procession, not a better one.

It is the wrong tool for a grandparent without a smartphone: 49.6% of our page views platform-wide are on a phone, which tells you what the format assumes.
