What a Ganpati wallpaper is, and how it differs from a greeting image

A Ganpati wallpaper is a still image set as the background of a device you own: a phone lock screen, a home screen, or a laptop desktop. A profile picture sits in the same family — a small fixed crop standing in for you on someone else's screen.

A greeting image is the opposite: composed once, sent, and read at whatever size the recipient's chat app renders it. The distinction decides which file you want, because a wallpaper must survive a crop to your panel's exact aspect ratio and a greeting image never does.

What resolution your screen actually is

Statcounter's India figures for August 2026 put one mobile viewport far ahead: 360 × 800 CSS pixels at 18.44% of Indian mobile page views, then 393 × 873 at 8.43% and 360 × 804 at 4.65%. Those are CSS pixels, not panel pixels — the browser reports the logical viewport after the device pixel ratio is divided out.

Multiply by the device pixel ratio of 3 those handsets typically report and 360 × 800 is a 1080 × 2400 physical panel, the FHD+ screen on most mid-range Indian phones. Export against that. The shape is 9:20 portrait, a ratio of 0.45 against 1.333 for a 4:3 photograph and 1.778 for 16:9.

Indian desktops are lower than people assume. In Statcounter's India desktop feed, 1366 × 768 (6.70%) and 1536 × 864 (6.15%) together outweigh 1920 × 1080 (7.13%) — a canvas of roughly one megapixel.

1. The phone lock screen

Native canvas 1080 × 2400 on the most common Indian panel, in a 9:20 portrait shape. Nothing wider survives intact.

Filling that height from a 3840 × 2160 landscape file keeps 25.3% of its width and discards 74.7%. Export portrait at 1080 × 2400 or larger, with the murti's face in the upper third, clear of the clock.

2. The phone home screen, behind the icons

Same panel, same 9:20 crop, far less visible: the icon grid, dock and search bar cover the middle and bottom. What reads is the top band and the gaps between rows.

Export the same file, then check it with the icons on. A composition that works in the picker often puts the trunk behind the third row of apps.

3. A laptop or desktop background

Native canvas 1366 × 768 or 1536 × 864 on most Indian laptops — 1.05 to 1.33 megapixels. It is 16:9 landscape, so a 4K file needs no crop at all.

It needs a steep downscale instead: a 3840 × 2160 file throws away 87.4% of its pixels on a 1366 × 768 screen. Export at your real screen resolution.

4. A WhatsApp or Instagram DP

The native canvas is a square, shown as a circle at small size. Square-cropping a 1080 × 2400 portrait keeps 45.0%, and the inscribed circle keeps 35.3%.

Compose inside a circle before uploading, not after. A 1080 × 1080 export with the face centred is plenty; anything larger is discarded on upload.

5. A page you send instead of setting anything

No fixed canvas. A web page reflows to whatever panel opens it, so nothing is cropped to a ratio or squeezed into a square. It is here because people reach for a wallpaper when what they want is to send something.

Why a 4K Ganpati wallpaper buys nothing on a 1080p phone

A 6.7-inch 1080 × 2400 phone is about 393 pixels per inch. Held at 35 cm, which a 2025 Nature Communications study calls the shortest comfortable viewing distance, that is roughly 94 pixels per degree.

Ninety-four is exactly the population mean their 18-observer experiment measured for foveal black-and-white vision, against the industry's long-standing 60 ppd assumption for 20/20 acuity, with the sharpest individuals at 120 ppd. An FHD+ phone at that distance already sits at the average eye's limit; a 1440 × 3200 panel reaches about 126 ppd.

The file changes none of this. The panel has 1080 columns and cannot address more, so a 4K image is downsampled before it reaches the glass — and after the portrait crop the surviving 972 × 2160 slice is 19% below the panel's own resolution.

A 4K Ganpati wallpaper is not too sharp for your phone. It is the wrong shape, so it is not sharp enough.

What a wallpaper does cost is light. Purdue's OLED measurements found dark mode saves only 3–9% at the 30–50% brightness used indoors, but 39–47% at full brightness — so in September sun a dark Ganpati wallpaper beats any pixel count.

What a DP crop does to a Ganpati composition

Ganpati artwork is composed wide: the murti centred, the mandap and decoration filling the sides. A square crop is exactly the wrong shape, because cutting a 3840 × 2160 landscape to 1:1 removes 43.8% of the width, and the width is where the surround lives.

The circle takes more. A round avatar shows only the inscribed circle of that square, π/4 of its area, so a 1080 × 2400 portrait contributes 35.3% of itself to the viewer.

Resolution is what people over-buy here. A 48-CSS-pixel avatar at a device pixel ratio of 3 is 144 physical pixels, and Antonio Torralba's study of how many pixels make an image found observers categorised colour scenes correctly 81.8% of the time at 32 × 32 pixels, against 8.3% chance.

A DP does not need pixels. It needs to read as a shape.

What happens to the file when you upload it

Setting a wallpaper from your own storage does nothing to the file. Uploading one as a profile picture re-encodes it, and JPEG re-encoding is not neutral.

The JPEG standard, ITU-T Recommendation T.81, partitions an image into 8 × 8 sample blocks and quantises luminance and chrominance with separate tables, its annex versions derived empirically using 2:1 horizontal subsampling. Colour detail is stored at half the horizontal resolution of brightness detail, and every re-save re-quantises on that grid.

That costs more on Ganpati artwork than on most images, because the palette is saffron, vermilion and gold. The same Nature Communications team measured the eye's red-green limit at 89 ppd against 94 ppd for black-and-white, so halving horizontal colour detail concedes more than the 1990s assumption implies — an inference across two sources, not a finding either states.

A 2023 study in Sensors lowered the JPEG quality factor in a forced-choice flicker test until subjects saw a difference, putting the visually lossless boundary at an FSIM of 0.9997 and an MS-SSIM of 0.9970. There is little headroom before a second save shows.

Where a Ganpati page beats a wallpaper, and where it does not

A wallpaper is for you. If what you want is to reach somebody — your mother in another city, a client, the family group — a file is the wrong object, because it arrives as an attachment and is judged at chat-thumbnail size.

That is the case for a page instead.
