- • A Gujarati garba card usually runs six lines: invocation, event name, a request to come (પધારશો), the date in Gujarati and English, the venue, and the host under નિમંત્રક.
- • Bhagavad Gomandal treats નિમંત્રણ as the respectful call to come, so it suits a home garbo; આમંત્રણ fits a society, party-plot or association card.
- • Opening invocations are a documented card habit: 68% of 50 Pakistani wedding cards and all 200 Iranian cards studied carried one.
- • 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so a forwarded card image must stay readable at phone size.
- • For one person, a single Gujarati line or the English-interface Be My Dandiya Partner page beats a printed card.

Garba Invitation Card in Gujarati: 6 Wordings You Can Print
A garba invitation card in Gujarati usually runs six lines in a fixed order: an invocation (જય અંબે), the event name, a request to come (પધારશો), the date written the Gujarati way (આસો સુદ એકમ) beside the English one, the venue, and the host's name under નિમંત્રક. Below are six original wordings in Gujarati script, romanised and glossed in English: pol, society, home garbo, party plot, NRI hall and one person.
Two SubhSandesh measurements shape how to send it: 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, which is where a forwarded card image gets read too, and in Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival we have measured (n=89, not Navratri data), 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself. Late is normal; a card that is clear on a phone is the one that works.
What does a Gujarati garba invitation card say?
A Gujarati garba invitation card is a short printed or forwarded notice that asks a household to come and play garba on stated nights, at a stated place, on behalf of a named host. It is closer to a notice than a letter: six to eight lines, no paragraphs.
That shape is a documented genre, not a Gujarati quirk. In a study of 50 Pakistani Baraat wedding cards (Amjad and Riaz, 2020), an opening religious line appeared in 68% of cards and the inviters' names in 98%.
A study of 200 Iranian wedding cards (Faramarzi et al., 2015) found an opening invoking God on all 200. Both studies looked at wedding cards from other cultures, so they show the pattern, not Gujarati usage.
આમંત્રણ or નિમંત્રણ: which word goes on the card?
Both are correct, and the dictionary draws a line between them. The Bhagavad Gomandal entry for નિમંત્રણ glosses it as a respectful welcome to come (આવવાને માટે આદરસત્કાર), adds that ignoring a નિમંત્રણ is a fault, and gives the older sense of આમંત્રણ as "please come again". Its આમંત્રણ entry lists નિમંત્રણ, તેડું and નોતરું among its senses, so the two overlap in everyday use.
In practice: use નિમંત્રણ on a home garbo or sthapana card, where you are calling family to a puja. Use આમંત્રણ on a society, party-plot or association card, which is a general call. The host's line is નિમંત્રક, which the same dictionary defines as "the one who invites" and glosses with the English word "convener", the right label for a committee.
One word to avoid: કંકોતરી. Bhagavad Gomandal defines it as a kanku-sprinkled card for weddings and other auspicious occasions, and Gujarati readers hear it as a wedding card first.
Which invocation line goes at the top?
Put one short line, centred, above everything else. Three options fit a garba card:
- || જય અંબે || (Jay Ambe): "Victory to Mother Ambe". The shortest, and right for a pol.
- || શ્રી અંબે માતા પ્રસન્ન || (Shri Ambe Mata prasanna): "May Mother Ambe be gracious", a blessing on the event. Suits a society or family card.
- || જય માતાજી || (Jay Mataji): the everyday Gujarati greeting, warm for a home card.
We found no published sample of Gujarati garba cards, so how often each line appears on real cards is unknown. These are options built from the words' meanings, not a quoted tradition.

- Note: garbo here means the pot itself: Bhagavad Gomandal's ગરબો entry describes a perforated clay or metal pot with a lamp inside, kept at home for worship during Navratri.
- Suits: relatives and neighbours. Register: નિમંત્રણ.
4. Party-plot or ticketed garba night

- English: [Organiser] presents a Navratri raas-garba festival with [artist]. Entry with pass only. Please come in traditional dress.
- Suits: a party plot, which is a big-city format: Akashvani's Gujarati service on 22 September 2025 named Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara.
No invocation line here; a commercial card reads better without one. Never print a price you have not fixed.
5. NRI association card, Gujarati and English
|| જય અંબે ||
[સંસ્થાનું નામ] આપને સહપરિવાર નવરાત્રી ગરબામાં પધારવા આમંત્રણ આપે છે.
[Association] invites you and your family to Navratri Garba.
સ્થળ / Venue: [hall, city] | તારીખ / Date: [date]
નિમંત્રક / Hosts: [committee]
- Romanised: [Sanstha] āpne sahaparivār Navratri garbāmā padhārvā āmantran āpe chhe.
- Suits: a hall abroad where elders read Gujarati and children read English.
- Layout: Gujarati first, English directly under it, English digits so nobody misreads the date.
6. One person: your garba partner
આ નવરાત્રીમાં નવેય નોરતાં મારી સાથે ગરબે ઘૂમીશ?
- Romanised: Ā Navratrimā naveya nortā mārī sāthe garbe ghūmīsh?
- English: This Navratri, will you swirl through all nine nights of garba with me?
A printed card is wrong for one person. Send the line on WhatsApp, or build it as a page: Be My Dandiya Partner takes nine short lines (one per night) and up to six photos, needs no app or account to open, and ends in a 1080×1920 Dandiya Pass.
Its buttons and labels are in English, so type your Gujarati lines and check the preview before you publish. 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect a page before sharing; for a crush, that option is there.
Printed card, WhatsApp text or a page: which format fits?
Four ways a Gujarati garba invitation travels are compared below. SubhSandesh's own numbers appear where they exist.
| Format | Who it reaches | Your own text | SubhSandesh measurement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed card (pol, society) | Every household, including elders without phones | 5–6 lines, wordings 1–3 | None: not a SubhSandesh format |
| Card image on WhatsApp | Group members with phones | Same 5–6 lines | None for images; 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views are on phones |
| Gujarati WhatsApp text | One chat or group | 1–2 lines, wording 6 | None |
| Be My Dandiya Partner page | One person | 9 lines, a note, up to 6 photos | 90.9% of started pages are published and shared |
Takeaway: print for the pol and the society, and forward the image to the group. Keep the page for the one person you want in the circle.
How should the date, time and host lines be written?
Write the date twice: the Gujarati calendar name and the English date. Akashvani's 2025 report placed ghat sthapana at Ambaji on "આસો સુદ એકમ ના પ્રથમ નોરતે" (on the first norta, Aaso sud ekam), and that phrasing is what elders recognise.
For 2026 the nine nights run Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October (રવિવાર, ૧૧ ઑક્ટોબર થી સોમવાર, ૧૯ ઑક્ટોબર). In 2027 they run 30 September to 8 October. Gujarat plays garba again on Sharad Purnima, Sunday 25 October 2026, so a society running that extra night should print it as a separate line.
Use Gujarati digits (૯:૦૦) on a Gujarati-only card and English digits on a bilingual one, never both in one line. For replies, add one line naming a person and a deadline.
When a Gujarati card is the wrong choice
A Gujarati-only card is wasted on a society whose residents mostly read English. There, a bilingual card (wording 5) works better.
The Be My Dandiya Partner page has limits too: its nine lines go to one person, and its interface is English only. It does not sell garba passes, it cannot invite a whole society, and it will not find you a partner.
If the real plan is dinner after the last aarti, a date invitation page asks that question directly. An elder who does not use a smartphone should get the printed card in person.
