Garba Invitation Video: How to Make One That Plays on WhatsApp
A garba invitation video for WhatsApp should run 15–30 seconds, stay under 100 MB at 720p and carry every detail as on-screen text. Platform limits, a six-shot storyboard, music rules and when a one-to-one link beats a video.

or browse all occasionsKey takeaways
- • WhatsApp Status videos cap at 90 seconds and chat videos default to 100 MB at 720p, so a 15–30 second 720p invite fits everywhere.
- • Instagram accepts reels between 1.91:1 and 9:16 at 720 pixels minimum; one 1080 × 1920 file covers reels, Status and chat.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh's shared pages are opened on a phone, which is why the invite should be vertical and readable with sound off.
- • Instagram's licensed music library is for personal, non-commercial use; organisers posting from business accounts should use Meta's 14,000-track Sound Collection.
- • A video suits a group; for one person you want an answer from, a one-to-one invitation link that asks the question does the job a clip cannot.

Garba Invitation Video: How to Make One That Plays on WhatsApp
A garba invitation video that works on WhatsApp is 15 to 30 seconds long, shot vertically, readable with the sound off, and exported under WhatsApp's 100 MB, 720p default for chat. Shoot it vertical: in SubhSandesh's own logs, nearly half of shared pages, 48.3%, are opened on a phone. Keep it quick to make, because people build festival invitations late: on Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival we have measured, 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself (n = 89; we have no Navratri figure yet).
Below are the platform limits, a six-shot storyboard, on-screen text, music rules and tools. The last section covers when a video is the wrong invitation.
What is a garba invitation video?
A garba invitation video is a short clip, usually 15 to 60 seconds, that invites people to a garba or dandiya night and carries the date, time, venue and dress code on screen. It is sent as a WhatsApp chat video, posted as a WhatsApp Status, or published as an Instagram reel.
Unlike a card it moves and carries a dhol beat; unlike a link it cannot take a reply. Sharad Navratri ran from 11 to 19 October in 2026 and runs from 30 September to 8 October in 2027 (Drik Panchang, New Delhi), so most invitations go out in the week before night one.
WhatsApp and Instagram limits for a garba invitation video
Every number below comes from the platforms' own help pages, read on 12 October 2026. The one to watch is the 90-second Status cap.
| Where it goes | Maximum length | Size and resolution | Shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp chat | Set by file size, not a stated length | 100 MB at 720p on a fast connection, 64 MB at 480p on a slow one | Not stated; 9:16 fills a phone |
| WhatsApp Status | 90 seconds | HD not available for Status | Not stated; 9:16 fills a phone |
| Instagram reel | Not the binding limit at invite length | Minimum 720 pixels, 30 frames per second | Between 1.91:1 and 9:16 |
The size limits are on WhatsApp's help page on sending media, which also says Status videos top out at 90 seconds. Anything larger can go as a Document, up to 2 GB, but it then arrives as a file rather than a video that plays in the chat.
Instagram's reel size and aspect ratio page gives the 1.91:1 to 9:16 range, the 720-pixel floor and a 420 × 654 cover image. Reel length is not the problem for an invite; attention is, which is why the storyboard below stops at 20 seconds.
The practical rule: one master file at 1080 × 1920 (9:16), 15 to 30 seconds, exported at 720p. It fits all three destinations without a re-edit.
A 20-second garba invitation video, shot by shot
A 20-second invite fits six shots of about three seconds each, with the final card held longer. Each shot gives what to film, the on-screen text and what to avoid.
1. The dandiya clash (0–3 s)
Film two pairs of dandiya sticks striking once, close up, against a dark background. On-screen text: the name of the night, such as "Raas at Gulmohar Society". Avoid a slow logo animation; the first three seconds decide whether a muted viewer keeps watching.
2. The chaniya choli twirl (3–6 s)
Film one twirl in the dress you will wear, from the waist down, so the flare of the ghagra fills the frame. On-screen text: the dress code, for example "Traditional, any colour". Avoid faces in this shot if the invite is going to a large group you do not know well.
3. The diya or garbo (6–9 s)
Film a lit diya or a decorated garbo pot, which says Navratri without a word. On-screen text: the date and start time, written as "Sat 17 Oct, 8 pm". Avoid writing "this Saturday", which is wrong for anyone who opens the video a week later.
4. The venue (9–12 s)
Film the gate, the lawn or the pandal lights, steady, for two seconds. On-screen text: the venue name and one landmark. Avoid putting a full street address in a Status, which your whole status audience can see.
5. The circle (12–15 s)
Film last year's circle, or friends practising a three-clap step in a living room. On-screen text: anything the guest must bring, such as "Bring your own dandiya". Avoid clips of strangers lifted from someone else's video, which are not yours to reuse.
6. The ask (15–20 s)
End on a still card with the RSVP line and a name: "Reply by Thursday, Meera". Hold it five seconds; it is the frame people screenshot. Avoid a fade to black.
On-screen text for people who watch with the sound off
Write every fact on screen as if the audio does not exist, because in an office or on a bus it usually does not. The audio carries the mood; the text carries the date.
Indian viewers do read on-screen text. In a 2022 eye-tracking study of 136 weak readers in rural Rajasthan, 70% read along unprompted when same-language subtitles appeared on Hindi film songs and dialogue. Text over a song gets read; so will a date over a dhol beat.
Placement matters too. Meta's Instagram Reels ad specifications advise keeping 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, so that the profile icon and buttons do not cover it. The guide is for ads, but the same buttons sit on an ordinary reel. Keep each text card under eight words, hold it for at least two seconds, and use one white font with a dark outline.
Garba songs in an invitation video: what the music rules allow
Use the music library inside the app you post from, and do not bake a film song into your edited file. Instagram's page on its licensed music library says the library is "intended for personal, non-commercial use", and that certain business accounts and certain types of posts cannot use it.
That splits garba invitations in two. A personal invite to friends can use a library song inside Instagram, or the add-music button in WhatsApp's Status editor. A society, club or event organiser promoting a ticketed night from a business account should use Meta's Sound Collection, which the same page describes as over 14,000 songs and sounds that are royalty free and can be used commercially.
For a paid promotion, Meta's Reels ad specifications say reels ads should not contain licensed music at all. A recording of your own dhol player is the safest soundtrack in every case.
Four ways to make a garba invitation video, compared
Searches like "navratri invitation video maker online free" and "garba invitation video free download" lead to four routes. Each row states only what that tool's own page says, read on 12 October 2026.
| Tool | What it is | Music | Cost stated on its own page |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Status editor | Trim a video, add text, stickers and up to 5 private mentions | Add-music button inside Status | Part of WhatsApp; Status caps at 90 seconds |
| Instagram reel editor | Upload clips, trim, choose a cover, add effects and audio | Licensed library for personal use; Sound Collection for business | Part of Instagram |
| CapCut | Video editor with templates and auto captions | Not checked | A USD 0 option with "basic editing tools"; Pro at USD 19.99 a month on the US-served page |
| Be My Dandiya Partner page | An interactive invitation link, not a video | A YouTube link or one of eight preset garba songs | Not a video file; outputs a 1080 × 1920 PNG pass |
For a group invite, the WhatsApp Status editor is the shortest route from phone to audience, and nothing has to be installed. WhatsApp's guide to creating a status lists the trim slider, text, music and mentions, and warns that Status media may upload at lower quality than the original. CapCut's pricing page was served to us in US dollars and says displayed pricing is for reference only, so check the price in your own app store before relying on it.
A downloaded template video from YouTube carries someone else's music, footage and often a watermark. Use it for timing, then shoot your own six shots.
When a garba invitation video is the wrong invitation
A video is the right tool for a group: a society WhatsApp group, a college club, a family of forty. It is the wrong tool when the invitation is for one person and you want an answer, because a video can be watched, forwarded and left on "seen" without a reply.
For that one person, a link that asks the question works better. The Be My Dandiya Partner invitation opens with a clash of dandiya sticks, lights nine diyas that each show one of your nine lines, and plays your song from a YouTube link or one of eight presets such as Chogada or Nagada Sang Dhol. It ends on "Will you be my Dandiya partner?" and a downloadable 1080 × 1920 Dandiya Pass, sized for an Instagram Story.
It is a one-to-one invitation for a love, a crush or a best friend as your garba buddy, so it is the wrong tool for a society or office invite. The page is in English, and it does not sell garba passes or find anyone a partner.
A link also gets reopened: across SubhSandesh, each created page averages 11.1 views. If what you really want to send is a song with your own voice introducing it, the radio-style song dedication page fits better than either, and the full template list covers the other occasions.
