Govardhan Puja 2027: Saturday 30 October, the Story and Annakut
Govardhan Puja 2027 falls on Saturday, 30 October 2027 in India, the morning after Lakshmi Puja. In New Delhi the Pratipada tithi runs from 7:05 PM on 29 October to 5:51 PM on 30 October, and the morning (Pratahkala) puja window is 6:31 to 8:45 AM, per Drik Panchang's 2027 Govardhan Puja timings. The same Saturday is Annakut, Bali Pratipada in Maharashtra and the Gujarati New Year.
Many families also send greetings that day, and plenty of them arrive late. In SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, used here as the nearest festival analogue (n = 89), 11.2% of greeting pages were built after the festival had passed and 49.4% on the day itself; and since 48.3% of all shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, a day-after greeting is often read on one. Below: the date in India and abroad, the story as an old text tells it, why Annakut means 56 dishes, and the day's other names.
What is Govardhan Puja, and why is it celebrated?
Govardhan Puja is the Hindu festival on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the first day of the bright fortnight after the Diwali new moon, when Krishna is worshipped as the protector who lifted Govardhan hill to shelter the cowherds of Braj. It is also called Annakut, "mountain of food", after the heap of cooked offerings placed before the deity.
The reason it is celebrated is an argument, not only a miracle. In the Bhagavata Purana's account, the young Krishna tells Nanda that herders should honour what actually sustains forest-dwelling herders: the cattle, the Brahmanas and the hill. The village redirects its offering from Indra to the hill, Indra sends a storm in anger, and Krishna holds the hill up until the storm gives out.
That is why day four of the five-day festival carries two themes at once. One is gratitude to land, cattle and food; the other is refuge under whatever sustains a household after Diwali's prayers for wealth.
Govardhan Puja 2027 date and muhurat, in India and abroad
The puja is done on Pratipada, in the morning if Pratipada holds at sunrise, which is why India keeps it on Saturday. Abroad the same tithi starts at a different local clock time, so the rule can land on Friday instead. Drik Panchang's London setting for Govardhan Puja 2027 gives Friday 29 October, and its New York setting does the same.
The table compares four cities, all figures from Drik Panchang's 2027 pages, fetched on 22 October 2026.
| City | Govardhan Puja 2027 | Puja window (local time) | Pratipada tithi (local time) |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Delhi | Sat 30 Oct | Morning, 06:31–08:45 AM | 07:05 PM 29 Oct to 05:51 PM 30 Oct |
| Ahmedabad | Sat 30 Oct | Morning, 06:43–08:59 AM | 07:05 PM 29 Oct to 05:51 PM 30 Oct |
| London | Fri 29 Oct | Evening, 03:41–05:39 PM BST | 02:35 PM 29 Oct to 01:21 PM 30 Oct |
| New York | Fri 29 Oct | Evening, 03:50–05:56 PM EDT | 09:35 AM 29 Oct to 08:21 AM 30 Oct |
The takeaway: in 2027 the whole sequence shifts a day in the UK and US. Drik's London and New York pages also put Lakshmi Puja on Thursday 28 October, so Govardhan Puja is still "the day after Diwali" everywhere. A temple abroad that follows its local panchang may hold Annakut on Friday evening, so check its announcement before you plan.
The Govardhan story as the Bhagavata Purana tells it
Most retellings you will hear come from the Bhagavata Purana, Book X, Chapters XXIV to XXVII. J. M. Sanyal's English prose translation of Book X, scanned by the Digital Library of India, lets anyone read the episode in full. It runs in this order:
- The argument (Chapter XXIV). Krishna sees the cowherds preparing their sacrifice to Indra and asks Nanda what it is for. His reply is that "That thing, by which a person lives, ought to be considered by him as his only adorable Deity", so herders should honour the cows, the Brahmanas and the mountain instead. He tells the village to feed everyone, even the dogs, and walk around the cattle and the hill.
- The storm (Chapter XXV). Indra, enraged, sends the Samvartaka clouds to flood Gokula. Krishna uproots Govardhan "with one of his hands" and holds it up "just like a person holding his umbrella over his head". He keeps it there for seven days without moving a step, until a humbled Indra stops the rain.
- The reconciliation (Chapter XXVII). Indra comes down with Surabhi, the cow of the gods, touches Krishna's feet and asks his pardon. Surabhi's milk and Ganga water poured from the trunk of Indra's elephant Airavata bathe Krishna in a coronation, and they give him the name Govinda, lord of the cows.
Two details correct the popular version. This translation says one hand, never mentions the little finger that popular pictures show, and in Chapter XXVI the cowherds marvel that "this boy of seven years of age" managed it. The story also ends with Indra honouring Krishna rather than being humiliated, a reconciliation most short retellings leave out.
Annakut 2027: why the offering is 56 dishes
Annakut is the cooked offering itself: dozens of vegetarian dishes, grains, sweets and pickles stacked in front of Krishna or a cow-dung model of the hill, then shared out as prasad. Drik Panchang describes it as food made from cereals such as wheat and rice, a gram-flour curry and leafy vegetables, and Annakut 2027 falls on the same Saturday, 30 October. The menu goes back to the story itself: in Chapter XXIV of the Bhagavata, Krishna asks the village for cooked dishes, soups, payasa, wheat foods and cakes, then takes a huge form, declares that he is the mountain, and eats the offering.
The number 56 has a story of its own. A peer-reviewed study of the Thattai Bhatia community, Rana Navreet Kaur's 2021 paper in the Journal of Ethnic Foods, records that these Pushtimarg followers prepare "a meal of 56 sattvik dishes", the chhappan bhog, for Govardhan Puja. Their explanation is arithmetic: Krishna held the hill for 7 days, so the villagers prepared 8 items for each of those days.
A household Annakut can be much smaller, say a mixed-vegetable sabzi, kadhi, rice, puri and one or two sweets, because the point is abundance shared, not a menu. Treat 56 as the temple standard and whatever your kitchen can manage as the household one.
One Saturday, several names: Bestu Varas and Bali Pratipada
In Gujarat the same day is New Year. Drik Panchang's Gujarati New Year 2027 page puts it on Saturday 30 October and marks the start of Vikram Samvat 2084. Gujarati families call it Bestu Varas, visit elders in the morning, and greet each other with "Saal Mubarak" or "Nutan Varshabhinandan".
In Maharashtra the day is Bali Pratipada (Bali Padva), which remembers Vamana sending King Bali to the underworld and the boon that lets Bali return to earth on this one day. Drik notes that Govardhan Puja and Bali Puja are kept on the same day, and gives both the same 2027 morning window, 6:31 to 8:45 AM in Delhi.
Govardhan hill and the parikrama today
The hill sits in Mathura district, and walking around it (the parikrama) is how many devotees spend the day. Leena Taneja's 2023 study of Braj in the journal Religions describes pilgrims who "ceremoniously walk or prostrate themselves" around its sacred boundary, and argues that circling the hill is how devotees "recollect the myth" of the shelter Krishna gave Vrindavan. Taneja's open-access paper also cites estimates of five to seven million religious tourists a year in Braj, and warns that new construction is changing the landscape pilgrims come to see.
For 2027 that means crowds. If you plan to walk the parikrama on Saturday 30 October, start before the 6:31 AM puja window, carry water, and expect a full town from Diwali night.
Wishing someone on Govardhan Puja or Bestu Varas
The day after Diwali is when late greetings go out. Original lines you can send as they are:
- "Govardhan Puja ki shubhkamnayein. May your kitchen stay as full as today's Annakut, all year."
- "Saal Mubarak! May Vikram Samvat 2084 bring you the shelter Govardhan gave Braj."
- In Gujarati: "નૂતન વર્ષાભિનંદન" (Nutan Varshabhinandan — "greetings for the new year"). Thank you for every Bestu Varas morning at your house.
- For someone abroad keeping it a day earlier: "Your Annakut is on Friday, ours on Saturday. Same mountain, same thanks."
If one person deserves more than a line, SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card, where they light a diya at their door and a row of wish diyas works on Govardhan Puja too, because the page works on any date. You choose love, family or friend mode, write a wish for each diya and a letter in a shagun liffafa, add up to six photos to the sky lanterns, and send a private link that opens in any browser, with an optional password, which 38.5% of creators across the platform set before sharing. For Bestu Varas, which is not a Diwali greeting, browse SubhSandesh's other templates instead.
When a greeting page is the wrong thing for Govardhan Puja
Be clear about what the Diwali card is. It is a one-person Diwali greeting with diyas, rangoli, sparklers and a mithai box; it has no Govardhan, Annakut or New Year scene, and it is not a puja guide or a muhurat tool. For elders, Bestu Varas is a visiting day, and a phone call before 9 AM or a dish brought to their Annakut counts for more than any link.
It is also the wrong format for a group: a temple committee announcing its Annakut timing needs a plain message with the date and hour. Keep the page for the one person who is far away this year.
