- • Choose the setting before the costume: a doorstep host, a chaperone, a party guest, a camera-first poser and a contest entrant need different things.
- • In a 2019 Foods study of 50 students, only those choosing from 9 options enjoyed their pick more; 3 and 12 options showed almost no effect.
- • The 15 ideas here cost roughly US$5 to US$30 each as October 2026 estimates, and only the contest builds take more than 75 minutes.
- • US pedestrian deaths ran 43% higher on Halloween evenings than one week before and after, across 1975 to 2016, so a chaperone costume should carry reflective tape.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so a costume worth showing off should fill a vertical frame.

Halloween Costume Ideas Chosen by Where You'll Wear Them
The fastest way to choose from thousands of Halloween costume ideas is to start with where you will spend the night, then pick from three costumes built for that setting. A doorstep host, a trick-or-treat chaperone, a party guest, a camera-first poser and a contest entrant need different things, and below are 15 original ideas, three for each.
Plan for the phone screen too: 48.3% of the pages SubhSandesh hosts are opened on a phone, so most people will see your costume as a vertical photo. Expect to decide late, too: our nearest festival data is Raksha Bandhan 2026, where 49.4% of 89 pages were built on the day itself; that is a different festival and a small sample, so read it as a timing hint only. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
What should a good Halloween costume idea do?
A good Halloween costume idea is one that still works three hours into the actual night you will have, not just in a photo on a list. That means it fits the setting first, then your budget, the weather and the people you are with.
When we checked the US Google top 10 for this phrase on 21 October 2026, three results were shop category pages and four were lists of 20, 61, 64 and 204 ideas. None of the six pages we could open grouped its ideas by where they would be worn, or gave a cost and build time for each one.
Why do long costume lists make the choice harder?
More options do not reliably make a better choice. In a 2019 study by Onuma and Sakai in Foods, 50 students chose a tea from 3, 9 or 12 options and then tasted two identical cups. Only the 9-option group rated its self-chosen tea as tastier; scores in the 3- and 12-option groups were almost zero.
The second trap is holding out for the perfect costume. A 2024 study of 153 Spanish nurses in Scientific Reports found that people high in the maximizing trait took longer to decide and more often chose to do nothing. The alternative is satisficing: stopping at the first option that clears your bar, which Sandorf, Campbell and Chorus (2022) model in PLOS ONE as what people do when weighing every option costs too much.
So this page gives you a setting, then three ideas. Pick the first one that clears your budget and comfort limits, and stop scrolling.
Pick your setting first: 15 costume ideas in 5 settings
Each idea lists what you wear, why it suits the setting, an estimated cost and the build time. Costs are rough US estimates for October 2026, assuming you own basic clothes.
1. The doorstep host: 3 costumes you can wear sitting down
You open the door dozens of times and sit down between knocks. Both hands go to the candy bowl, so nothing here has a tail, a long cape or a mask.
- Lamplighter: flat cap, waistcoat and a broom handle topped with an LED tea light; you "light" the porch at dusk. Est. US$12, 30 minutes.
- Toll-booth keeper: a cardboard booth window taped around your chair and a sign reading "Toll: one joke". Kids pay in jokes, you pay in candy. Est. US$5, 45 minutes.
- Possum playing dead: grey hoodie, felt ears, a pink nose and a deckchair; flop over when the doorbell rings, then "revive" for the candy handover. Est. US$15, 20 minutes.
2. The trick-or-treat chaperone: 3 costumes for a long walk
A chaperone walks for one to two hours after dark, carries spares and needs to be spotted by small children at a glance. Each pick here layers over a warm coat, wears flat shoes and takes a strip of reflective tape.
A JAMA Pediatrics analysis of 42 Halloweens from 1975 to 2016 found US pedestrian deaths between 5 pm and midnight ran 43% higher than in the same hours one week before and after, with the steepest rise, roughly tenfold, among 4- to 8-year-olds. The absolute risk is small, but the authors suggest reflective patches on clothing, and that is the part a chaperone controls.
- Newsie: flat cap, rolled sleeves over a sweater and a canvas satchel that carries spare candy, wipes and a flashlight. A rolled paper reads "EXTRA! HALLOWEEN 31 OCTOBER". Est. US$15, 15 minutes.
- Night watchman: long dark coat, a hand bell and an LED lantern; ring it and call the time at each street corner so the kids know where you are. Est. US$20, 10 minutes.
- Submarine captain: navy peacoat, captain's cap and a cardboard periscope for keeping eyes on your crew over parked cars. Est. US$18, 40 minutes.
3. The crowded party or bar: 3 costumes with nothing to knock over
Expect four or five hours standing, tight doorways and drinks at elbow height. These stay within your own shoulder width and leave both hands free.
- Crash-test dummy: yellow top and pants, black-and-yellow target circles stuck on with tape and a fixed, blank stare. Est. US$20, 30 minutes.
- Quiz master: blazer, bow tie and a stack of cue cards with one Halloween trivia question per guest you meet. Est. US$10, 20 minutes.
- Elevator operator: pillbox hat, white gloves and a cardboard floor dial on a lanyard; greet each new arrival with "Going down to the basement?". Est. US$14, 30 minutes.
4. The camera-first night: 3 costumes made for the phone screen
If the costume mainly lives in photos or a video call, only the top half needs to be built, and it should fill a vertical 9:16 frame. This is where the 48.3% phone-open figure matters most.
- Jack-in-the-box: a painted cardboard box at chest height with a crank on one side; you pop up out of it, arms wide, in a clown collar. Est. US$12, 60 minutes.
- Passport photo: a giant cardboard passport page around your face, a deadpan expression and a stamp reading "ENTRY: 31 OCT". Est. US$6, 30 minutes.
- Gramophone: a large cardboard horn painted brass, fixed behind your head so your face sits where the sound would come out. Est. US$10, 75 minutes.
5. The contest or parade: 3 costumes that read from 20 meters
Judges and crowds give each entrant a few seconds, so a single big silhouette beats detail. These are box costumes on shoulder straps, so they need wide doorways and a helper.
- Double-decker bus: a red box around your waist on straps, windows drawn on both decks and paper ghosts as passengers upstairs. Est. US$25, 3 hours.
- Jukebox: a curved-top box with a strip of LED lights and a song list on the front; a friend presses a button and you sing a line. Est. US$30, 4 hours.
- Red phone box: a tall red box with a cut-out window at face height and a toy handset on a cord. Est. US$30, 4 hours.
Settings compared: time in costume, hands and est. cost
The table sets the five settings side by side. Hours are our own estimates, and costs are US estimates for October 2026.
| Setting | Typical hours in costume (our estimate) | Hands free? | Est. cost per idea, US$, Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doorstep host | 2–3, mostly seated | Both, for the bowl | 5–15 |
| Trick-or-treat chaperone | 1–2, walking | One, for a small hand | 15–20 |
| Crowded party or bar | 4–5, standing | Both, for a drink | 10–20 |
| Camera-first | Under 1 | Not needed | 6–12 |
| Contest or parade | 1–2, slow walking | Neither, while carrying | 25–30 |
The longer you wear a costume, the less it should weigh. Only a contest justifies a three-hour build.
Weather, budget and group size: the three tie-breakers
Once you have your setting, three questions settle most ties. Ask them in order and let the first one that separates two ideas decide.
- Cold night: pick the idea that layers over a coat. The newsie, night watchman and submarine captain all do; the crash-test dummy does not.
- Budget under about US$12 (Oct 2026 estimate): the toll-booth keeper, passport photo, quiz master, lamplighter and gramophone come in at or under that.
- Three to six friends: turn the idea into a scene. Friends become the bus passengers, the quiz master's contestants, or a queue waiting outside the phone box.
Show the costume to the one person who missed it
Costume photos tend to get scattered across group chats. A greeting page gathers them for one person, such as a partner who worked late or a friend in another city.
The Halloween card with photos and music suits a quick send: up to 6 photos, a letter and a jack-o'-lantern they carve themselves, ready in about 5 minutes. Its Boo License ends on a 1080×1920 card in the Instagram Story shape, with a costume you choose for them. The premium Halloween page with a voice note takes about 10 minutes and adds up to 12 photos, a voice note up to 60 seconds, an optional unlock time and a reply box.
If you would rather ask someone to come along next year, a date invitation page puts the question for you. Once people start a page they tend to finish it: 90.9% of started SubhSandesh pages are published and shared.
When these costume ideas, or our page, are the wrong choice
- A child set on one character: none of these 15 ideas is a film, game or comic-book character. A licensed costume beats any clever idea here when a seven-year-old has already decided.
- Near open flames or on public transport: cardboard box costumes are not flame-tested and block aisles. Choose a fabric idea from settings 1 to 3 for bonfires, candlelit porches or a bus ride.
- Large parties and invitations: our two Halloween pages are built for one recipient at a time and the interface is English only. For a crowd, use a group chat or a printed invite.
