- • A 6 × 6 m terrace gives a 4.8 m garba ring that holds about 15 dancers at 1 m spacing, or 22 with a second inner ring (an estimate, not a measurement).
- • Loudspeakers stop at 10 pm under the Noise Rules, 2000; Goa's 2026 order allowed a midnight finish for Navratri only on 20 October and only on application.
- • WHO rates 90 dB as safe for 4 hours a week, so a 3-hour garba night at that volume uses 75% of a guest's weekly allowance; aim under 80 dB.
- • Buy one pair of dandiya sticks per dancer plus about 15% spares: 23 pairs for 20 dancers.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so put the address, gate and start time in the invite's first line.

How to Host a Garba Night at Home for 10 to 40 Guests
How to host a garba night at home: measure your floor first, then plan the circle, the sound and the clock. A 4.8 m circle on a 6 × 6 m terrace holds about 15 dancers, and the night runs aarti, garba, dandiya, food, with speakers off by 10 pm unless your state has notified that night. Below are the space maths, floor, sound, run-of-show, sticks, vrat food, themes and budget.
Put the address, gate and start time in the first line of the invite. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, so assume guests read your plan on a small screen. Expect late replies too: in our nearest measured festival, Raksha Bandhan, 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself (n = 89, not Navratri data).
What does hosting a garba night at home involve?
A home garba night is a private Navratri evening where 10 to 40 guests dance garba and dandiya raas around a central lamp or garbo in a living room, terrace or society lawn. The host supplies the space, the music, the aarti, the dandiya sticks and food that fasting guests can eat.
It differs from a society event in scale, not ritual: with no staff or sound engineer, the floor, volume and clock are yours. Sharad Navratri runs nine nights (11 to 19 October in 2026, 30 September to 8 October in 2027), and most homes pick one.
How many dancers fit in a garba circle?
Garba is danced in a ring moving counterclockwise round the garbo, slow at first and faster as each song builds. Capacity is the ring's circumference divided by the space each dancer takes.
The figures below are our estimate, not a measurement. They assume 1 m of ring per dancer (0.75 m if everyone knows the steps), 0.6 m of clearance outside the ring and 1.2 m between rings, so ring diameter is the shorter wall minus 1.2 m.
| Space | Ring diameter | Dancers at 1 m spacing | Main floor risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room, 4 × 4.5 m, furniture out | 2.8 m | 8 (11 tight) | Polished tiles and socks |
| Terrace, 6 × 6 m | 4.8 m + inner ring of 2.4 m | 15 + 7 = 22 | Drain slopes, wet patches, low parapet |
| Society lawn, 10 × 10 m | 8.8 m + inner ring of 6.4 m | 27 + 20 = 47 | Uneven turf, sprinkler-wet grass |
So a living room suits about 10 guests in rotation, a terrace about 25 and a lawn 40 or more. With 30 guests on a terrace, run two rings or let half eat while half dance.
Floor and surface safety before the first clap
Footwear is the cheapest fix. A 2024 review of footwear and falls in older adults names rubber as the preferred slip-resistant sole material, including on wet surfaces, and cites an analysis of 70,196 fall incidents in which open slippers significantly predicted falls.
- Dancers go barefoot or in rubber soles; socks on marble are the classic slip.
- Lift every rug, or tape all four edges down.
- Put the diya or garbo on a stool in a brass plate, never on the floor where a dupatta can sweep it. Use LED diyas on a windy terrace.
- Keep drinks on a table outside the ring and mop spills at once.
- Seat older guests at the edge and offer them a slower inner ring.
How loud, and how late, can the music be?
Under the Noise Rules, 2000, loudspeakers go off at 10 pm, and the residential limit is 55 dB(A) by day and 45 dB(A) at night. States may allow 10 pm to midnight only on notified festive nights, and a home terrace gets no automatic exemption.
Goa's 7 April 2026 order allowed loudspeakers until midnight for Navratri only on 20 October 2026, the last day, and only case by case on a specific application. Check your own state's list before you print "till midnight".
Your guests' ears set a second limit. The WHO's safe-listening guidance (6 March 2026) rates 80 dB as safe for 40 hours a week but 90 dB for only 4, so a 3-hour night at 90 dB uses 75% of a guest's weekly allowance.
- Keep the speaker at or below 60% of maximum, as WHO advises, and aim under 80 dB on a phone decibel app at the ring.
- Point speakers inward at the circle, away from the shared wall.
- Tell the neighbours the date and end time a day ahead, or invite them.
A 3-hour run-of-show: aarti, garba, dandiya, food
A fixed order stops the night drifting past 10 pm. This plan starts at 7 pm.
| Time | Segment | Host task |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00–7:20 pm | Arrivals, shoes off | Water at the door, sticks in a basket |
| 7:20–7:35 pm | Aarti at the garbo | Phones away, one diya per family |
| 7:35–8:20 pm | Garba, slow to fast | Two-clap first, then three-clap |
| 8:20–8:30 pm | Water break | Refill, open windows |
| 8:30–9:10 pm | Dandiya raas in pairs | Hand out sticks, form facing rows |
| 9:10–9:50 pm | Food | Vrat and regular counters |
| 9:50–10:00 pm | One slow closing garba | Volume down, music off at 10 |
Keep dandiya after garba. Sticks in a crowded room are the main injury risk, and by 8:30 the beginners have found the rhythm.
Dandiya sticks: how many spares
Count one pair per dancer, add about 15% and round up, so twenty dancers need 23 pairs. This is our rule of thumb, not a published figure.
Check every pair for splinters before guests arrive. Keep a shorter set for children and a bin for broken pieces.
Vrat-friendly food plan
Fasting rules differ by family. Run two labelled counters so nobody has to ask.
- Vrat counter: sabudana khichdi, kuttu or singhara puri, samak rice, makhana, fruit with sendha namak (rock salt); no onion, garlic or common salt.
- Regular counter: dhokla, khandvi, pav bhaji or a thali.
- Both: buttermilk, lemon water and plenty of drinking water.
Fry vrat items first in fresh oil and keep separate ladles. One cross-used spoon can put a fasting guest off the counter.
Budget lines, without invented prices
We found no sourced price ranges for home garba supplies. These are the 6 cost lines and what drives each.
| Line | What drives the cost |
|---|---|
| Sound | Own speaker or hired, plus hours |
| Dandiya sticks | Dancers plus 15% spares |
| Lighting and diyas | Clay, LED, or both |
| Food | Guests across two counters |
| Decor | Marigolds, fabric, mirror-work drapes |
| Cleanup | Mops, bins, a helper next morning |
5 dandiya night theme ideas for a home party
1. Colour of the day
- What: guests wear that night's colour. Drik Panchang sets the Navratri colour by weekday: Thursday 30 September 2027 is yellow, Tuesday 5 October 2027 red.
- Suits: mixed groups; most people own the colour.
- Need: the colour in the invite and a matching dupatta for the garbo.
- Setup time: 15 minutes.
2. Kathiawadi night
- What: mirror-work drapes, kediyu and chaniya choli, brass lotas, bajra rotla for dinner.
- Suits: families with Saurashtra roots.
- Need: fabric drapes and a folk-heavy playlist.
- Setup time: about 1 hour.
3. Bollywood dandiya
- What: a playlist of film garba tracks such as Chogada and Nagada Sang Dhol, with a filmi dress code.
- Suits: first-timers who know the songs, not the steps.
- Need: a good speaker and one person on the playlist all night.
- Setup time: 30 minutes.
4. Eco night with clay diyas
- What: clay diyas only, marigold and mango-leaf toran, steel glasses, banana-leaf plates, no plastic or confetti.
- Suits: societies with waste rules and hosts who hate cleanup.
- Need: 20 to 30 clay diyas and a bucket of sand nearby.
- Setup time: 45 minutes.
5. Sharad Purnima encore
- What: Gujarat dances garba again on Sharad Purnima, which falls on Sunday 25 October in 2026, so your night avoids the big Navratri clashes.
- Suits: hosts whose friends are booked all nine nights.
- Need: an open terrace and doodh-poha to serve.
- Setup time: nothing beyond the base plan.
The one person you want beside you in the circle
The guest list goes out in a WhatsApp group. The one person you want as your dandiya partner deserves their own invite.
The Be My Dandiya Partner invitation is built for that one person, not your 30 guests. They clash a pair of sticks to open it, light nine diyas that each show one of your lines, and pick the colour they will twirl in, which suits a colour-of-the-day night.
The ticket carries your date, time, venue and dress code with Add to calendar, and a yes produces a 1080 × 1920 Dandiya Pass. The page is English-only and one-to-one, so it is the wrong tool for the guest list. A password is optional; across the platform, 38.5% of creators add one.
Planning to ask them to something after the garba night instead? A date invitation with a countdown fits that better.
When a home garba night is the wrong plan
Skip hosting if your clear space is under 4 m on the short side: that gives a 2.8 m ring and about 8 dancers, cramped by the second song. Skip it too if you are fasting and cooking for 30; join a society night and host a small aarti dinner instead.
Over 40 guests, the table says two rings and a 10 m space. That is a society event with a committee, a sound permission and an organiser's invitation, and if a neighbour has a newborn or someone ill, end at 9 pm or move indoors with windows shut.
