90s Halloween Costumes: 28 Subculture Looks, From Grunge to Y2K
28 90s Halloween costumes grouped by scene, from grunge and hip-hop to rave, boy bands and the 1998–2001 Y2K crossover. Each look has three garments, a thrift or closet source, an estimated price and one hair or makeup cue, with Met records and print data to tell 90s from Y2K.

or browse all occasionsKey takeaways
- • Most of the 28 looks need three garments plus one hair or face cue, at an estimated US$8–25 bought second-hand.
- • Low-rise jeans are 2000s, not 90s: Google Books English mentions sit at 0.3 per billion words or less through 2000, then reach 2.3 in 2001.
- • Grunge was already a designer look by spring/summer 1993, the date the Met gives a Marc Jacobs dress for Perry Ellis.
- • Songs from people's teens and early twenties cue memories harder than films (Hanson et al. 2025, n = 248), so band looks suit guests born roughly 1975–1988.
- • 48.4% of views of shared SubhSandesh pages come from phones or tablets, so frame a costume photo for a small screen.

90s Halloween Costumes: 28 Subculture Looks, From Grunge to Y2K
Most 90s Halloween costumes need just three garments from a single scene and one hair or face detail, which keeps the spend to roughly US$8–25 after a closet raid and a charity-shop trip. The 28 looks below run from grunge to the 1998–2001 Y2K crossover, each one priced and sourced. If the photo is headed to someone far away, shoot it for a phone: 48.4% of views on shared SubhSandesh pages come from touch devices, and each page gets 11.1 views on average.
After the list, museum and print records date the pieces and a table weighs five scenes. Prices are estimates; dates carry links.
What turns an outfit into a 90s costume?
An outfit becomes a 90s costume when a stranger can date it to 1990–1999 from silhouette, fabric and hair alone. The tell is proportion: something oversized, loose layers and an undone finish, unlike the fitted, bright 80s.
The audience matters too. A 2025 Memory & Cognition study of 248 US adults aged 20 to 85 by Hanson and colleagues found song excerpts produced a significantly more pronounced reminiscence bump than film clips: music from adolescence and early adulthood is the stronger memory trigger. So a band-based look hits hardest with people who were teenagers in the 90s.
28 90s Halloween costume ideas by scene
Prices are our US-dollar guesses for what you would buy second-hand, and each entry runs garments, source, price, then the hair or face cue. Famous groups appear only as ideas, so skip logos and album art; sitcom looks are generic TV types, not named characters.

Is it 90s or Y2K? Dating the pieces before you buy
Some "90s" staples belong to one slice of the decade, and a few to the next. Print figures below are Google Books English mentions per billion words, a gauge of attention, not sales.
- Grunge was on designer rails by 1993. The Met's Costume Institute holds a rayon-and-Lycra dress designed by Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis, dated spring/summer 1993. In the Google Books English corpus, "grunge" jumped from 23.6 mentions in 1991 to 135.2 in 1993.
- Matching sportswear sets are late 90s. The Met also holds a 1997 Tommy Hilfiger athletic ensemble in nylon and cotton, donated by the company in 1998. Copy its colour blocking and leave the logo out.
- Toys and glitter arrive from 1997. "Tamagotchi" went from 0.9 in 1995 to 42.6 in 1997; "Beanie Babies" peaked at 185.7 in 1998. Across 1995–1997 "body glitter" rose from 0.2 to 4.8 and "lip liner" from 14.6 to 36.5.
- Low-rise, trucker caps and velour belong to the 2000s. A second Ngram comparison shows "low-rise jeans" at 0.3 or less through 2000, then 2.3 in 2001 and 7.5 in 2004. "Trucker hat" barely shows until 2.9 in 2004, and "velour tracksuit" first passes 1 in 2005, so save a velour set for a 2000s party.
- Frosted tips resist print dating. The phrase never exceeds 0.6 per billion words across 1985–2008, so it is a remembered photo detail, not a dated one. Pair it with something datable, such as cargo trousers, which climbed from 3.9 in 1997 to 31.1 in 1999.
Five 90s scenes side by side: price and recognition
This table sets five scenes against what they need and cost. The last column is our editorial 1–5 rating, not a measured figure.
| Scene | Key garments | Approx. US$ | Recognition (our rating, 1–5) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grunge | Plaid flannel, torn jeans, combat boots | 10–20 | 5 |
| Hip-hop and R&B | Baggy denim, one-strap dungarees, colour-block nylon | 15–25 | 4 |
| Rave and club | Wide trousers, platforms, body glitter | 8–25 | 3 |
| Boy bands and girl groups | Matching outfits, headset mic, pigtails | 10–25 per person | 5 as a group, 3 solo |
| Y2K crossover | Low-rise flares, metallics, "2000" tiara | 15–25 | 4 |
Grunge is the cheapest safe pick, since a flannel shirt already hangs in most wardrobes. Group looks need everyone to turn up.
Which 90s look will your crowd recognise?
Hanson's team recruited about 20 people per ten-year band, from 20–29 up to 70–85. Songs from the teenage years cued memories harder than films, so fit the look to the guest list.
- Guests born roughly 1975–1988: band and rave looks land; that music sits in their adolescence.
- Mixed ages or family: a toy or sitcom type needs no shared playlist, and some films stayed familiar to every age band.
- Guests in their twenties: in our view, go Y2K, since grunge flannel passes for everyday thrift wear.
Show your 90s costume to someone who stayed home
A partner, best mate or sibling who stayed in will want proof of the frosted tips. The interactive Halloween card tucks six photos at most behind fogged-up portraits for them to wipe clear, and hides your letter in a pitch-black attic they search by flashlight. Modes cover partner, bestie, family or kids, with music from any YouTube link or eight preset Halloween tracks, Monster Mash among them.
One recipient only: no party invites, no outfit shop. Its final Boo License offers eight stock costumes from ghost to mummy, none of them 90s, and an email lands in your inbox at their first reply. The premium Halloween page fits a voice recording of 60 seconds or less and 12 photos; 38.5% of people building SubhSandesh pages add a password, handy for private snaps.
When to skip a 90s costume, or our card
Young trick-or-treaters who want to be recognised at the door should pick something else. Flannel or club-kid gear relies on a grown-up's memory, and a seven-year-old answering the bell may see only everyday clothes.
The card is pointless if you will be together on 31 October. The interface is English, and a grandparent who likes something to hold will prefer a framed print.
