- • Choose by stage: 8 costumes each for 0–3, 3–6, 6–9 and 9–12 months, because the risk moves from the face to the feet as a baby learns to crawl and cruise.
- • Onesie-based builds cost an estimated US$5–9 each, sensible when a 0–3 month size is labelled for three months of growth.
- • 16 CFR 1501 bans small parts in articles for under-3s but exempts children's clothing and buttons, so pull-test every costume trim yourself.
- • In a 2020 study of nine babies, 15 minutes in a sling raised skin temperature by up to 1.1°C and no mother noticed the change.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views are on phones (site-wide, not Halloween data), so shoot the costume photo in portrait.

Baby Halloween Costume Ideas for Every Stage From 0 to 12 Months
The safest baby Halloween costume ideas follow the baby's stage rather than the costume aisle. A newborn needs something that works lying down, a five-month-old needs a costume that survives tummy time, and a ten-month-old cruising along the sofa needs nothing below the ankle. Built on a plain onesie, most of the 32 costumes below cost an estimated US$5–9 to make, which matters when a 0–3 month size is labelled for just three months of growth.
The photo usually outlives the night. Across all SubhSandesh pages (not Halloween data), phones account for 48.3% of views and the average page draws 11.1 views, so frame the shot in portrait with the baby's face clear. Below: 32 costumes in four stages, a stage-by-stage comparison, and the safety gaps costume labels skip.
What is a stage-matched baby Halloween costume?
A stage-matched baby costume is designed around what a baby can physically do that month: lie still, sit, crawl or pull up to stand. The risks move as they grow, from the face and neck in the first weeks to the knees and feet by month 10.
Warmth is the constant. A 2025 review by van de Kamp and Daanen notes that babies cannot remove excess clothing themselves, and that adults tend to judge a baby's temperature by their own. Every costume here therefore replaces a layer rather than adding one.
32 baby Halloween costume ideas across four developmental stages
Each idea gives the onesie-based build, a safety note and a rough DIY cost. Estimates assume you own a plain sleepsuit and buy only felt, fabric paint or a beanie.
Newborn, 0–3 months: 8 costumes that work lying down
Newborns sleep through most of the evening, so the costume must look right strapped into the car seat, or laid on a rug. Swaddle loosely at the hips: a 2026 survey of 436 mothers in Riyadh, found knowledge of correct swaddling averaged 46.9%, and tight swaddling that holds the legs straight is a known hip-dysplasia risk.
- Spring roll: golden muslin wrapped loosely below the armpits. Safety: legs bent and free; unwrap after the photo. Est. US$0–5.
- Sushi roll: white swaddle, black felt band as nori, orange beanie as salmon. Safety: band stays below the armpits. Est. US$5.
- Baby bat: black sleepsuit, felt wings stitched wrist to side seam. Safety: no wire. Est. US$6–8.
- Peanut: tan sleepsuit with brown fabric-paint shell lines. Safety: wash the paint once before wearing. Est. US$5.
- Glow-worm: green sleepsuit, yellow felt tummy, beanie with felt antennae. Safety: no pipe cleaners. Est. US$6.
- Dumpling: cream sleepsuit, beanie with pleats sewn into the crown. Safety: beanie off indoors. Est. US$5.
- Tiny mushroom: white sleepsuit, red beanie with sewn white felt dots. Safety: never glued. Est. US$6.
- Snoozing sloth: brown sleepsuit, felt sloth face on the chest. Safety: no hood over the face. Est. US$7.
3–6 months: 8 costumes for tummy time and supported sitting
From three to six months, babies do tummy time and start sitting with support. Keep decorations flat, because padding on the back or tummy tips them over.
- Turtle: green sleepsuit, flat felt hexagon shell sewn on the back. Safety: no stuffing. Est. US$7.
- Bumblebee: yellow sleepsuit, iron-on black stripes, small felt wings. Safety: palm-sized wings only. Est. US$7.
- Strawberry: red sleepsuit, stitched felt seeds, leaf beanie. Safety: no sequins. Est. US$7.
- Frog: green sleepsuit, felt eyes on a green beanie. Safety: eyes are felt circles, not plastic toy eyes. Est. US$6.
- Gumball machine: white bodysuit with painted dots, red leggings. Safety: paint the gumballs; pom-poms choke. Est. US$6.
- Octopus: purple sleepsuit, six short felt legs stitched flat at the hip. Safety: nothing loose. Est. US$9.
- Hedgehog: brown sleepsuit, zigzag felt strip sewn down the back. Safety: soft felt only. Est. US$7.
- Watermelon slice: pink top, green leggings, stitched felt seeds. Safety: two pieces ease nappy changes. Est. US$6.
6–9 months: 8 costumes for sitting and crawling
Sitters chew whatever they reach, and crawlers drag fabric under their knees. Nothing hangs past the hands or feet.
- Scuba diver: blue sleepsuit, flat felt air tank sewn on the back. Safety: no mask or snorkel. Est. US$7.
- Dalmatian puppy: white sleepsuit, black felt spots, ears on a beanie. Safety: spots stitched, not stuck. Est. US$7.
- Tiny doctor: green bodysuit, felt stethoscope sewn flat. Safety: no toy tubing. Est. US$6.
- Crab: red sleepsuit, felt claws sewn to the shoulders, not the hands. Safety: hands stay free. Est. US$7.
- Fox: orange sleepsuit, white chest patch, short tail. Safety: tail stitched flat. Est. US$8.
- Pilot: khaki sleepsuit, felt wings badge, soft aviator-style beanie. Safety: skip the goggles and chin strap. Est. US$8.
- Skunk: black sleepsuit with a white felt stripe from head to bottom. Safety: a palm-length tail, sewn down. Est. US$7.
- Shark: grey sleepsuit, soft felt fin on the back, white felt teeth on the tummy. Safety: teeth away from the face. Est. US$7.
9–12 months: 8 costumes for cruising
Cruisers pull up on furniture and side-step, so nothing goes below the ankle. Separates beat one-pieces now for quick changes.
- Firefighter: red top and trousers with yellow felt stripes. Safety: no helmet; a soft red beanie instead. Est. US$8.
- Elephant: grey top and leggings, felt ears on a beanie. Safety: trunk stays short and on the hat. Est. US$8.
- Mountain hiker: fleece top, felt map patch, knitted beanie. Safety: non-slip socks, not new shoes. Est. US$5.
- Dinosaur: green top with felt plates sewn into the back seam. Safety: tail ends above the knee. Est. US$9.
- Zebra: white top and leggings with black fabric-paint stripes. Safety: hems above the ankle. Est. US$6.
- Raccoon: grey top, ringed felt tail, black felt "mask" on the beanie. Safety: no face paint. Est. US$7.
- Painter: white dungarees with fabric-paint splashes, beret with no elastic. Safety: no brush prop. Est. US$6.
- Pizza slice: felt tabard ending at the hips, stitched pepperoni. Safety: open sides, no ties at the neck. Est. US$6.
Baby Halloween costumes by stage: cost and safety compared
The table puts the four stages side by side, using one costume from each list. Costs are estimates for a home-made version on a sleepsuit you already own.
| Stage | Costume example | Safety note | Est. cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn, 0–3 months | Spring roll | Loose at the hips; photo only | US$0–5 |
| 3–6 months | Turtle | Flat decorations for tummy time | US$7 |
| 6–9 months | Crab | Hands, knees and feet clear | US$7 |
| 9–12 months | Dinosaur | Nothing below the knee or ankle | US$9 |
The pattern is that cost barely moves, while the safety focus slides from the face down to the feet. A sleepsuit costume also goes back into everyday rotation on 1 November.
Baby costume safety: what 3 US rules cover, and what they skip
US federal rules protect costumed babies less than parents assume. Under 16 CFR part 1501, any toy or article meant for under-3s that fits inside the official test cylinder is banned as a choking hazard. Yet section 1501.3 exempts children's clothing and accessories, naming buttons, so costume trims are not run through that test.
That leaves the pull test to you. Tug every pom-pom, button and felt eye; if it moves, resew it or cut it off.
Flame rules have a similar gap. 16 CFR part 1615 sets the flammability test for children's sleepwear sizes 0–6X, with part 1616 covering sizes 7–14. It exempts "infant garments" sized nine months or smaller, and a costume is not sleepwear at all, so keep candles and lit jack-o'-lanterns out of reach and change the baby into their usual sleepwear for bed.
Overheating is the next risk. When researchers tested nine babies carried in a sling in 2020, 15 minutes of babywearing raised skin temperature by up to 1.1°C on the abdomen, and the mothers noticed no change. Feel the baby's tummy or nape, not their fingers, to judge warmth.
Face paint is out for the whole first year. WA Health advises against painting the face of any child under 3, because paint can get into the eyes or mouth and young skin is more sensitive. Put the whiskers on the beanie instead.
Sending the costume photo to grandparents in Family mode
Grandparents far away want this photo most. Our Halloween greeting page with Family mode holds six pictures, a letter and one word that glows on a carved pumpkin. In this mode the closing question reads "Will you be my favourite little pumpkin?"
Grandad raps on the haunted-house door three times, clears misted portraits one by one to uncover the baby, and, up in the dark attic, shines a light on your note. You hear by email when he first answers, and his Boo License downloads as an Instagram Story-sized image.
For a month-by-month set, the premium Halloween page fits a dozen photos plus a recorded message lasting at most 60 seconds, enough for a giggle. Site-wide, 38.5% of creators on SubhSandesh set a password first, a habit worth copying when the pictures show your baby.
When to skip the baby costume, or the card
Leave the costume in the drawer if the baby is unwell, overtired or pulls at hats; a plain sleepsuit still photographs well. Halloween falls in late spring in Australia, and van de Kamp and Daanen say the familiar "one extra layer" rule needs rethinking in heat, so a warm evening may call for a nappy and one felt badge.
Our Halloween page has its own limits. It speaks English only and each page greets a single person. A granny who never got a smartphone will treasure a printed photo instead, and twenty cousins suit a shared album better.
