Cartoon Couple Costumes: 22 Disney-Free Pairs and Who Owns Them
The cartoon couple costumes that work best give each person one loud block of colour, such as Fred and Wilma, Ruby and Sapphire or CatDog, and all 22 pairs below come from studios other than Disney. Two of them, the 1930 Betty Boop with Bimbo and Blondie with Dagwood, entered the US public domain on 1 January 2026.
Plan for a small screen: 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, and the average page is viewed 11.1 times, so your costume photo gets judged at thumb size, repeatedly. Below: the pairs by rights holder, a cost table, the cartoons Disney quietly owns, and when a cartoon pair is the wrong call. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
What is a cartoon couple costume?
A cartoon couple costume means two outfits based on animated or comic-strip characters known as a duo, worn so that each costume makes the other easier to identify. Cartoon characters are drawn in flat colour with few details, so two or three pieces usually carry the whole likeness.
That tells you where to spend. In a 2025 open-access study, 51 adults gave 12,251 similarity ratings of cartoon figures that varied in five attributes: the character itself mattered most, then clothing, then hat and equipment equally, with shoes mattering least. Put the money into hair, face colour and the main garment, and wear your own shoes.
22 Disney-free cartoon couple costumes, grouped by rights holder
Each pair lists the pieces that carry it, a rough spend for both of you in US dollars, and a build time. Ownership is as of October 2026.
1. Public domain since 1 January 2026 (2 pairs)
Duke Law's annual public-domain review lists Betty Boop, Blondie and Dagwood among the characters whose 1930 debuts became free to use in the US on 1 January 2026. Only those first versions are free; trademarks in the names continue.

Which cartoons does Disney own without its name on them?
The Simpsons is the big one. Disney's 14 December 2017 announcement named The Simpsons among the properties joining its portfolio, and the 21st Century Fox acquisition took effect at 12:02 a.m. Eastern on 20 March 2019, bringing over Twentieth Century Fox Television and Fox Animation.
So Homer and Marge are a Disney-owned couple, though the show never aired on a Disney channel. A Twentieth Century Fox Television logo in a cartoon's end credits now means Disney.
The 2026 public-domain list has its own trap. It also includes Rover, the 1930 bloodhound later renamed Pluto, who stays a Disney character in every later version.
Cartoon couple costumes compared: cost, time and rights
The table groups the 22 pairs by section, with estimated spend and build time.
| Group | Pairs | Est. spend, both costumes | Build time | Rights, October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1930 public-domain versions | 2 | $25–50 | 1–1.5 h | US public domain since 1 Jan 2026; trademarks continue |
| Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes | 6 | $20–60 | 45 min–2 h | Warner Bros. |
| 1990s–2000s cable | 5 | $20–50 | 45 min–3 h | Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. |
| 2010 onwards | 5 | $25–60 | 30 min–2 h | Cartoon Network; Ludo Studio for Bluey |
| India, UK and strips | 4 | $10–45 | 30 min–1 h | Green Gold Animation, Aardman, Mirror and others |
Strip characters are cheapest and quickest because a hat and one prop carry them. CatDog is the outlier at about 3 hours of building.
How to make a cartoon pair read on a phone screen
With 48.3% of shared pages opened on a phone, your costume photo is seen at roughly thumb size. Stand side by side, full length, against a plain wall, so both colour blocks show.
Give each person one bold prop. A 2026 PNAS study found that symbols designed to be memorable were recognised better than ones designed to be forgettable, and a cartoon prop works like a symbol: the ACME crate, the Jetson ray gun, Bubblegum's crown.
Send the costume photo as a Halloween card
The average SubhSandesh page is viewed 11.1 times, so a costume-photo card is usually seen more than once. Pick the version by how many photos you took.
- The interactive Halloween card with up to six photos suits a couple of costume shots. It takes about five minutes, has them carve a pumpkin and read your letter by flashlight, then asks "Will you be my boo?" with a No button that runs away.
- The premium cinematic Halloween page with a 60-second voice note fits a bigger shoot: up to 12 photos, a letter of up to 3,000 characters, an optional unlock time and a reply box; allow about ten minutes.
- If the costume is really your way of asking someone to the party, a date invitation page does that job more directly.
Both Halloween pages are for one person, not party invitations, and 38.5% of creators password-protect their page before sharing it. Do it for photos from a crowded party.
When a cartoon couple costume is the wrong choice
A cartoon pair fails when the room does not share the reference. Chhota Bheem lands instantly in India and draws blanks in Ohio, and Bandit and Chilli mean most to parents of under-fives, so pick for the guest list.
- You plan to sell copies. Duke notes trademark law targets uses likely to confuse buyers about a product's source, which wearing a homemade costume is not.
- You need to sit or dance. CatDog limits movement, and foam heads cut vision.
SubhSandesh also loses here. It is not a costume shop, and its pages are English only.
