Choti Diwali 2027: The Thursday Before Lakshmi Puja, Hour by Hour
Choti Diwali 2027 falls on Thursday, 28 October 2027. It is Narak Chaturdashi, also called Roop Chaudas, and it sits between Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October and Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October. The Chaturdashi tithi runs from 10:49 PM on 27 October to 8:47 PM on 28 October, and the pre-dawn oil bath window in New Delhi is 05:06 to 06:30 AM, per Drik Panchang's 2027 abhyang snan timings.
If you plan to send a greeting, this is the evening most people actually do it. In SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, used here as the nearest festival analogue (n = 89), 27.0% of pages were built the day before the festival and 49.4% on the day itself, and 48.3% of all shared pages are opened on a phone. Below: the timings, why Tamil Nadu treats this morning as Deepavali, the Narakasura story as the Vishnu Purana tells it, and what moves to a different day in 2027.
What is Choti Diwali, and why does it have three names?
Choti Diwali is the second day of the five-day Diwali festival, observed on the Chaturdashi (14th lunar day) of the dark fortnight that ends in the Diwali new moon. "Choti" simply means small: it is the eve of the main night, with fewer lamps and a lighter puja.
The other two names describe what the day is for. Narak Chaturdashi remembers Krishna's victory over the asura Naraka, and Roop Chaudas (or Roop Chaturdashi) points to the beauty bath of oil and ubtan that families take before sunrise. Drik Panchang lists all three as names of the same day, and in 2027 all three land on 28 October.
Choti Diwali 2027 timings for Delhi and Chennai
The bath is fixed by two conditions: the Chaturdashi tithi must be running, and the moon must have risen while the sky is still dark. In 2027 both hold on the morning of Thursday 28 October. Times shift by city because sunrise and moonrise do.
- New Delhi: abhyang snan 05:06 to 06:30 AM, 1 hour 24 minutes.
- Chennai: 04:40 to 06:01 AM, 1 hour 21 minutes (the same Drik Panchang page, set to Chennai).
- Chaturdashi tithi: 10:49 PM on 27 October to 8:47 PM on 28 October 2027.
- Amavasya begins as Chaturdashi ends, on the night of 28 October, which is why Friday 29 October carries Lakshmi Puja.
Check your own city before setting an alarm. Delhi and Chennai start 26 minutes apart, enough to miss the window.
Why Tamil Nadu's Deepavali morning is this day
In Tamil Nadu, Deepavali itself is observed when Chaturdashi prevails during Brahma muhurta, just before sunrise, according to Drik Panchang's note on Tamil festival rules. North India keys the main festival to Amavasya in the evening, for Lakshmi Puja at dusk. One festival, two clocks: Tamil Nadu counts the dawn, Delhi counts the dusk.
That is why Drik Panchang's 2027 Diwali calendar marks Tamil Deepavali on Thursday 28 October, the same day as Narak Chaturdashi. In a Chennai home the oil bath, new clothes, sweets and the first crackers all happen that morning. In a Lucknow home the same Thursday is a quieter eve.
In 2026 the two clocks happened to agree. Chaturdashi ran from 10:47 AM on 7 November to 11:27 AM on 8 November 2026, so the bath and Lakshmi Puja both fell on Sunday 8 November. In 2027 they split across Thursday and Friday.
One inconvenient detail, as of October 2026: third-party holiday calendars currently print 29 October as Deepavali for Tamil Nadu, and at least one labels its 2027 dates as an estimate. The state's official holiday notification for 2027 was not yet out when this was written. If you need leave or a school date, wait for the government order rather than trusting either calendar.
Morning crackers bring their own risk in the south. A Bengaluru eye hospital's Deepavali case series (2010) recorded 51 patients with firecracker eye injuries; 29 of them were onlookers, not the people lighting, and none had worn eye protection.
The Narakasura story, as the Vishnu Purana actually tells it
The oldest widely available telling is in the Vishnu Purana, Book V, Section XXIX, readable in the public-domain Dutt translation based on H. H. Wilson on Project Gutenberg. Indra comes to Dwarka to report that Naraka, son of Bhumi (the Earth) and ruler of Pragjyotisha, has seized Aditi's earrings and Varuna's umbrella and locked away captive maidens.
Krishna flies to Pragjyotisha on Garuda with Satyabhama seated beside him, cuts through the razor-edged nooses of the demon Mura, kills Mura, and then cuts Naraka in two with his discus. The Earth returns Aditi's earrings and asks forgiveness for her son, saying he was killed for his own purification. Krishna then frees 16,100 women held in Naraka's palace.
Two details many retellings change. In this text Krishna strikes the blow, not Satyabhama, and Naraka makes no dying request that his death be marked with lamps. Both belong to later regional tellings, not this translation, so if a grandparent tells it differently, neither of you is wrong: you are quoting different centuries.
Choti Diwali 2027, hour by hour
Rituals vary by family, so treat this as the common spine, not a rulebook. All times are for 28 October 2027.
1. Before sunrise: abhyanga snan
The oil bath is the day's defining act: warm oil worked into the scalp and skin, then washed off, often with ubtan of gram flour and turmeric. In Delhi the window closes at 06:30 AM; in Chennai at 06:01 AM. In Tamil homes this is the Deepavali bath itself, followed by new clothes.
2. Morning: Roop Chaudas or Tamil Deepavali
In parts of western India the day leans towards Roop Chaudas, a grooming-and-beauty morning. Tamil households move straight into Deepavali visits, sweets and crackers, all on Thursday this year.
3. Evening: the first full row of diyas
Choti Diwali evening brings the first full row of diyas in many homes, a rehearsal for Friday, so keep them off the floor where people walk. A five-year review of Diwali burns at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi (2024) found that 32.5% of Diwali-period burns came from diyas, that a burning diya left on the floor was the main cause, and that 70.4% of those injured were women. The authors advise keeping diyas on a non-combustible surface and avoiding loose synthetic clothing near them.
4. Night: Amavasya arrives
Chaturdashi ends at 8:47 PM on 28 October and Amavasya begins. Drik Panchang lists Bengal's Kali Puja on the night of 28 October, so Kolkata's main night is Thursday, not Friday.
What moves to a different day in 2027
Because Chaturdashi starts late on Wednesday night, two observances people associate with Choti Diwali fall a day earlier. Drik Panchang lists Kali Chaudas (observed mostly in Gujarat) and Hanuman Puja on Wednesday 27 October 2027, with the Kali Chaudas muhurat from 11:39 PM to 12:31 AM. Yama Deepam also falls on 27 October, alongside Dhanteras, because Kali Chaudas follows midnight Chaturdashi while Narak Chaturdashi follows the pre-dawn moon.
Sending a Choti Diwali greeting: the night before is when people build
There is no Diwali creation data on SubhSandesh yet, because the Diwali page is new, so the nearest honest evidence is Raksha Bandhan 2026 (n = 89, a one-day festival, small sample). Mapped onto the 2027 calendar, the pattern looks like this.
| Diwali 2027 day | Date | Offset from Lakshmi Puja | Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages built at that offset (n = 89) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Wed 27 Oct | 2 days before | 5.6% (two to three days ahead) |
| Choti Diwali | Thu 28 Oct | 1 day before | 27.0% |
| Lakshmi Puja | Fri 29 Oct | The day itself | 49.4% |
| Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj | Sat 30 to Sun 31 Oct | After | 11.2% |
Of the 79 rakhi pages finished in time, 86.1% were built within 24 hours of the festival. If Diwali follows that shape, Thursday evening, after the Choti Diwali diyas, is the realistic build window.
That is where the interactive Happy Diwali card on SubhSandesh fits. It is a one-person page: they light a diya at their door with your tag on it, a row of wish diyas, a rangoli that glows with your initials and sky lanterns holding up to six photos, then open your letter from a shagun liffafa. It takes about five minutes, has love, family and friend modes, and opens in any phone browser without an app, and a shared page averages 11.1 views, so a link sent Thursday night can be reopened on Friday.
These three Choti Diwali lines were written for this post; copy any of them into the letter or a message. Each works for family or a friend.
- "Tomorrow is the big night. Tonight is for the people who made the house bright enough for it."
- "May the oil bath wash off the year's tiredness and leave only the good parts."
- "छोटी दिवाली की रौशनी, बड़ी दिवाली से पहले तुम तक। (Chhoti Diwali ki raushni, badi Diwali se pehle tum tak.) Choti Diwali's light, reaching you before the big one."
When a link is the wrong Choti Diwali gesture
A page does not replace being there for the 5 AM bath at your grandmother's, and it is no help with the puja itself; it is not a muhurat or ritual tool. It suits one person, not a family WhatsApp group of forty. And since only 48.3% of opens are on a phone, an elder who never opens links is better served by a call at 6 AM.
If the person you are missing this Thursday is a partner in another city, the I miss you page says that more directly than a festival card. If they are on a train home for the Friday holiday, the Train Ticket love letter, with its PNR check and clearing waitlist, fits the journey better.
