- • Choose the baby's position before the costume: 24 trios here split into carrier (5), stroller (5), arms (5), asleep (4) and photo-only (5).
- • Estimated home-made costs run from about $5 for a blanket photo scene to $40 for a fully dressed stroller.
- • Safe to Sleep says a baby who falls asleep in a car seat, stroller or carrier should be moved to a firm, flat sleep space, so costume pieces never go into the bassinet.
- • The Lullaby Trust says nothing should cover a pram in a way that stops air flowing; decorate the side panels and handle only.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views are on phones (site-wide, not Halloween data), so shoot the trio photo in portrait with the baby's face in frame.

Couple Costumes With Baby: 24 Trios Planned Around the Baby
Couple costumes with baby work when they start from where the baby will spend the evening: in a front carrier, in the stroller, in your arms, asleep in a car seat, or on a blanket for one photo. Pick the position first and the costume second, because a baby under 12 months cannot walk, cannot pull off a hat and cannot tell you they are too warm.
Shoot the family photo for a small screen too: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of page views happen on phones, and a page is opened 11.1 times on average. Both are site-wide, not Halloween, figures. Below: 24 trios, a comparison by position and the safety rules.
How is a couple costume with a baby different?
A couple costume with a baby is a three-person theme where two adults carry the idea and the baby's part is set by where the baby sits, sleeps or is carried. A baby under 12 months stays where you put them, so the carrier, stroller or car seat becomes part of the costume.
NIH's Safe to Sleep campaign says a baby who dozes off in a car seat, stroller, carrier or sling should be moved to their usual sleep space as soon as possible (Safe to Sleep, NICHD). A costume that may need to come off fast should be one the baby barely wears.
24 couple costumes with baby, sorted by where the baby will be
Each trio lists adult roles, the baby's part, a comfort note, age and an estimated home-made cost in US dollars. "Newborn" means 0–5 months.
In the carrier: 5 front-carry trios
Build the carrying parent's outfit around the carrier and keep every prop below the baby's chin. Skin contact warms the baby, so dress them one layer lighter than for the stroller.
- Kangaroo, safari guide and joey: brown hoodie with a felt pouch rim; partner in khaki with binoculars; baby in a brown sleepsuit. Comfort: ears sewn on, no hat. Any age. Est. $20–30.
- Pea pod, gardener and pea: open green jacket as the pod; partner with a watering can; baby in green. Comfort: hood down indoors. Any age. Est. $15–25.
- Bookshelf, librarian and bookworm: felt bookshelf tabard below the carrier; partner in cardigan and glasses; baby in green as the worm. Comfort: book spines are felt, not card. Any age. Est. $15–25.
- Coffee cup, barista and babyccino: card cup sleeve worn below the carrier; partner in an apron; baby in cream as the foam. Comfort: card edges taped. Any age. Est. $10–20.
- Mad scientist, monster and the experiment: lab coat; partner in monster face paint; baby in green with ironed-on felt stitches. Comfort: no paint on the baby. 6–12 months. Est. $20–30.
In the stroller or pram: 5 set-piece trios
The stroller becomes the costume and the baby rides in ordinary warm clothes. Decorate the side panels and handle only, leaving the hood, airflow and brake pedal untouched.
- Pumpkin carriage: orange felt side panels; coach driver and fairy godparent; baby as royal passenger. Comfort: hood still folds. Any age. Est. $25–40.
- Pirate ship: card hulls, a sail behind the handle; captain and lookout; baby as the parrot. Comfort: mast never over the seat. 6–12 months. Est. $25–40.
- Taco truck: side panels with a painted serving hatch; chef and first customer; baby as special of the day. Comfort: nothing hangs from the canopy. 6–12 months. Est. $20–35.
- Steam train: card boiler on the front bar; conductor and passenger; baby as driver in a striped bib. Comfort: boiler below eye level. 6–12 months. Est. $20–30.
- Monster truck: felt tyres on the side panels, never the real wheels; pit crew and race commentator; baby as driver. Comfort: wheels and brake clear. 6–12 months. Est. $15–25.
In arms: 5 trios for short outings
Arms suit a doorstep or a short visit, not a two-hour walk. The baby's outfit can be more themed here because their face is always in view.
- Ketchup, mustard and a little nugget: red and yellow tops; baby in a golden sleepsuit. Comfort: no glitter. 6–12 months. Est. $15–25.
- The bun is out: sequel to the pregnancy classic: a chef and a parent in a card oven door; baby in tan as the bun. Comfort: door stays on the adult. Newborn. Est. $10–20.
- Two scarecrows and a little crow: straw-trimmed shirts and patched hats; baby in black with felt feathers stitched flat. Comfort: straw stays on adult cuffs. Any age. Est. $15–30.
- Witch, warlock and black kitten: hats and robes; baby in black with a short tail sewn down its length. Comfort: no loose ends. 6–12 months. Est. $20–35.
- Two mummies and a little mummy: gauze wraps; baby in white with felt bands sewn on, not loose strips. Comfort: nothing to unravel. Any age. Est. $10–20.
Asleep in the car seat or bassinet: 4 "stays asleep" trios
If the party runs past bedtime, the baby sleeps in normal sleepwear and the adults carry the joke. Nothing is added to the car seat or bassinet, which is the comfort rule for all four.
- Sleeping Beauty: good fairy and prince with a "Not before 7am" scroll; the baby plays the title role. Any age. Est. $15–25.
- Do not disturb: concierge and bellhop, the door hanger on an adult's lapel; the baby is the VIP guest. Any age. Est. $10–15.
- The Sandman and the night owl: dressing gown and "sleep dust" sack, plus owl feathers; the baby proves it worked. Any age. Est. $15–30.
- Museum night guards: dark uniforms and torches; the sleeping baby is the priceless exhibit. Any age. Est. $15–25.
Photo-only: 5 blanket scenes
These last ten minutes, with the baby awake, on their back on a firm blanket and both parents within reach. Props sit at the edges, out of grabbing distance.
- Pumpkin patch: orange and green blanket, small pumpkins at the corners, parents as farmers. Any age. Est. $10–20.
- Spell book: brown blanket laid out as an open book; wizards point wands; baby is the spell. Any age. Est. $10–20.
- Mission control: black blanket with felt stars; parents in headsets; baby as astronaut. Any age. Est. $15–25.
- Polar expedition: white blanket as an ice floe; parents in parkas with felt flags; baby in white as the bear cub. Any age. Est. $10–20.
- Horror-film poster: parents screaming at the lens, the calm baby under a felt title, "The Tiny Terror". Any age. Est. $5–10.
Couple costumes with baby compared by position
This compares the five positions on trios available, suitable age and cost. Costs are rough home-made figures, not retailer prices.
| Baby position | Trios | Best age | Est. cost (US$) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front carrier | 5 | 0–12 months, within carrier rating | 10–35 |
| Stroller or pram | 5 | Mostly 6–12 months | 15–40 |
| In arms | 5 | 0–12 months, short outings | 10–35 |
| Asleep in car seat or bassinet | 4 | 0–12 months, after bedtime | 10–30 |
| Photo-only blanket | 5 | 0–12 months, awake | 5–25 |
Carrier and stroller trios give the most costume for the money. The asleep plan costs least and leaves the routine alone.
Baby safety rules for Halloween costumes
Safe to Sleep says to clear everything from the sleep area except a fitted sheet, including soft or "tucked in" items. Felt wings, tails, props and hats never go into the bassinet, even for a short nap.
Those rules slip on busy nights. In a 2020 survey of 3,341 Queensland caregivers, 38% of infants slept with soft items, bulky bedding or on soft surfaces, and nearly half were routinely put down somewhere not designed for sleep, such as a pram or bouncer (Cole et al., BMC Pediatrics, 2020).
Fabric near the face is the other worry: in a 2025 study, nine healthy adults lay face down on common infant-product fabrics for ten minutes, and 100% cotton and a cotton-polyester blend significantly raised exhaled carbon dioxide and lowered blood oxygen (Olvera et al., Canadian Journal of Respiratory Therapy, 2025). The authors say infants, with weaker arousal responses, would be at higher risk.
- Sleep space: fitted sheet only; take costume pieces off before moving a sleeping baby.
- Heat: Safe to Sleep links overbundling to higher SIDS risk and says to remove a baby's hat indoors. Feel the chest or back of the neck, as hands and feet run cooler (Lullaby Trust, room temperature).
- Face: no mask, veil or felt flap over nose or mouth, and no hat that ties under the chin.
- Stroller: The Lullaby Trust says not to cover a pram or buggy with anything that stops air flowing (Lullaby Trust, hot weather). Keep props off the hood, wheels and brake, and test the brake with the costume on.
- Car seat: that page also says to lift a baby out on arrival and lay them on a firm, flat surface.
Sending the trio photo to one relative in Family mode
A grandparent who missed the evening can still see the three of you. The interactive Halloween card offers a Family mode that ends on a "favourite little pumpkin" question, and it takes six pictures at most plus a short letter.
Your relative knocks at a little haunted house, clears foggy frames to find each photo and finds the letter in a dark attic. An email tells you when they first respond, and they can download a Boo License in Instagram Story size.
The premium Halloween page holds 12 photos and a recorded message as long as 60 seconds, with no No button in family mode. Of pages people start, 90.9% are finished and shared, so a same-night build is realistic.
When a couple costume with a baby is the wrong plan
Leave the costume off a poorly baby: The Lullaby Trust warns against wrapping a feverish baby more than usual, and a costume is one more layer. On a freezing night, a snowsuit beats any stroller trio.
Our Halloween page is not for everyone: its interface is English-only and it greets a single person. A relative without a smartphone will prefer a printed photo.
