Deepavali Wishes in Tamil: 15 Original Lines, Each Word Checked
Deepavali wishes in Tamil come in three shapes: a greeting noun (இனிய தீபாவளி நல்வாழ்த்துகள், iṉiya tīpāvaḷi nalvāḻttukaḷ, "sweet Deepavali, good wishes"), a blessing verb ending in -க (வாழ்க, "may you flourish") and a "let it be" ending in -கட்டும். Below are 15 original lines in Tamil script, Roman transliteration and English, sorted by who receives them, with the key words checked in the University of Madras Tamil Lexicon.
Write yours before the morning. SubhSandesh has no Deepavali data yet; on Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival we measured (n = 89 pages, a different one-day festival), 49.4% of greeting pages were built on the day itself and 27.0% the day before. And 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, so every line here fits on one screen.
Three shapes of a Tamil wish, in the Tamil Lexicon (p. 3620)
Every Tamil wish rests on வாழ்த்து (vāḻttu). The Tamil Lexicon defines வாழ்த்து on p. 3620 as "benediction, felicitation", then "praise", and builds it on வாழ், "to live, to flourish". A vāḻttu is, at root, a wish that someone lives well.
Tamil turns that root into three forms, and the one you pick sets the tone. All three appear below:
- Noun + -கள்: நல்வாழ்த்துகள் (nalvāḻttukaḷ), "good wishes". Neutral and safe for anyone.
- Verb + -க, the optative: வாழ்க (vāḻka), ஒளிர்க (oḷirka), "may you flourish", "may it shine". Formal; the shape of a blessing.
- Verb + -கட்டும், "let it": ஒளிரட்டும் (oḷiraṭṭum), "let it shine". Warm and conversational.
Who blesses whom: the direction rule for elders (p. 211)
In a Tamil family the blessing travels downward. The Lexicon glosses ஆசி (āci, p. 211) as "blessing, benediction" with வாழ்த்து as its synonym, and it is the elder who gives it: a grandmother says நீடூழி வாழ்க, "live for long ages", to a grandchild.
A younger person wishing an elder asks for that blessing instead, uses the respectful நீங்கள் (nīṅkaḷ) form and often says they bow (வணங்குகிறேன், vaṇaṅkukiṟēṉ). English "bless you" has no direction, so this is an easy slip in translation.
Deepavali wishes in Tamil for parents and grandparents (3 lines,
All three use the respectful plural and ask rather than grant. Swap in your family's names.
(Ammā, Appā, inta tīpāvaḷi aṉṟu uṅkaḷ āci maṭṭumē eṉakku vēṇṭum.) "Amma, Appa, on this Deepavali your blessing is all I want."
(Pāṭṭi, nīṅkaḷ ēṟṟiya viḷakkiṉ oḷiyiltāṉ nāṉ vaḷarntēṉ; inta tīpāvaḷikkum eṉṉai ācīrvatiyuṅkaḷ.) "Paati, I grew up in the light of the lamps you lit; bless me this Deepavali too."
(Tūrattil iruntālum uṅkaḷ kālait toṭṭu vaṇaṅkukiṟēṉ; iṉiya tīpāvaḷi nalvāḻttukaḷ.) "Though I am far away, I touch your feet and bow; happy Deepavali."
For friends, brothers and sisters (4 lines,
Between equals the informal நீ (nī) is warmer. Use it only where நீ already runs both ways.
(Naṇpā, ūrukku vantāl nam teruvil oru viḷakku uṉakkākavē eriyum.) "Nanba, if you come home, one lamp on our street will burn just for you."
(Taṅkacci, uṉ kōlam pōl uṉ vāḻkkaiyum vaṇṇamāka malaraṭṭum.) "Thangachi, may your life bloom in colour, like your kolam."
(Aṇṇā, inta varuṭam pututtuṇi nāṉ vāṅkit tarukiṟēṉ; nī iṉippu maṭṭum koṇṭu vā.) "Anna, this year I'll buy the new clothes; you just bring the sweets."
(Iruḷ vilakuka, iṉimai perukuka, nam naṭpu eṉṟum oḷirka!) "May the dark withdraw, may sweetness grow, may our friendship always shine!"
For a husband, wife or partner (3 lines)
Deepavali night falls on அமாவாசை (amāvācai), the new moon (Lexicon p. 104), which is why the third line has no moon in it. Pick the one that sounds like you.
(Eṉ vīṭṭiṉ ellā viḷakkukaḷaiyum viṭa, nī ēṟṟum anta oru akalviḷakkutāṉ eṉakku tīpāvaḷi.) "More than every lamp in my house, the one clay lamp you light is Deepavali to me."
(Kaṇṇē, kālai nāṉku maṇikku eṉṉai eḻuppum uṉ kuralē eṉ tīpāvaḷi icai.) "Kanne, your voice waking me at four in the morning is my Deepavali music."
(Nī Tupāyil, nāṉ Tirucciyil; iṉṟu iravu orē nilavillā vāṉattiṉ kīḻ iruvarum viḷakku ēṟṟuvōm.) "You in Dubai, me in Trichy; tonight we both light a lamp under the same moonless sky."
If your spouse is the one in Dubai this year, SubhSandesh's miss-you page with a reunion countdown may suit better. It is a romantic template, not a Deepavali one, and 28.0% of its senders set a reunion date (60 of 214).
For colleagues and the family group (2 lines)
Group messages take அனைவருக்கும் (aṉaivarukkum, "to everyone") and the plural imperative. Keep the office line impersonal.
(Nam kuḻuviṉ aṉaivarukkum, avarkaḷ kuṭumpattiṉarukkum iṉiya tīpāvaḷi nalvāḻttukaḷ; inta āṇṭiṉ uḻaippukku naṉṟi.) "Happy Deepavali to everyone on our team and their families; thank you for this year's work."
(Nam kuṭumpak kuḻuvil iṉṟu ellōrum oru pukaippaṭam aṉuppuṅkaḷ; yār vīṭṭu viḷakku varicai nīḷam eṉṟu pārppōm!) "Everyone in the family group, send one photo today; let's see whose row of lamps is longest!"
Blessings for children, and one belated line (3 lines)
These run the other way: an elder gives, so the verbs are optatives. The last is for the day after.
(Kaṇṇu, nīṭūḻi vāḻka; paṭippum paṇpum viḷakkup pōl oḷirka.) "Kannu, live long; may your learning and your character shine like a lamp."
(Makaṉē, nī irukkum ūril viḷakku ēṟṟa iṭam illaiyeṉṟālum, uṉ peyaril iṅkē oṉṟu ēṟṟukiṟōm.) "Son, even if there is no place to light a lamp where you live, we are lighting one here in your name."
(Nēṟṟu vāḻttat tavaṟiṉēṉ; iṉṟum viḷakku erikiṟatu, ataṉāl vāḻttum cellum!) "I missed wishing you yesterday; the lamp is still burning today, so the wish still counts!"
Tirukkural couplet 299: a classical line about the lamp
For one line nobody can call a forward, quote Tiruvalluvar. Couplet 299 sits in the chapter on truthfulness; the Project Madurai e-text of the Tirukkural gives it as below; the Tamil Lexicon also quotes its opening under விளக்கு, "lamp, light" (p. 3725). It suits a photo of one diya, or a teacher.
(Ellā viḷakkum viḷakkalla cāṉṟōrkkup poyyā viḷakkē viḷakku.) "Not every lamp is a lamp; to the wise, the lamp that does not lie is the only lamp." Tiruvalluvar, Tirukkural 299; the English is our own rendering.
When to send each line in Diwali week 2027
Tamil Nadu and North India split in 2027. Drik Panchang's Tamil Deepavali page puts Deepavali on Thursday 28 October 2027 and North Indian Deepavali on Friday 29 October,; some 2027 holiday lists print 29 October for Tamil Nadu, and the state order is not out as of October 2026. Wish Tamil family on the 28th.
| When in 2027 | Who is celebrating | Line to send | Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages built then (SubhSandesh, n = 89) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two to three days ahead, Mon 25–Tue 26 Oct | Family abroad, anyone posting a card | "Though I am far away, I touch your feet" | 5.6% |
| The evening before, Wed 27 Oct | Households setting alarms for the dawn oil bath | "Anna, this year I'll buy the new clothes" | 27.0% |
| The day, Thu 28 Oct (Tamil Nadu) | Tamil families, from 4 AM | "Amma, Appa, your blessing is all I want" | 49.4% |
| After it has passed, Fri 29 Oct on | North Indian friends still celebrating | "I missed wishing you yesterday" | 11.2% |
The last column is a different festival, so read it as a rough guide. It says half of senders leave it to the day, and a Tamil Deepavali day starts before sunrise.
Tamil script or Roman? What 17,715 comments show
Every line has Roman letters because many Tamil speakers type that way. In a 2022 study of 17,715 annotated Tamil YouTube comments, Chakravarthi and colleagues report the Tamil comments were code-mixed and typed in Latin script, not Tamil letters.
So match the reader: script for a grandmother who reads Tamil, Roman for a cousin in Toronto who never learned to read it. In a chat, drop the diacritics: vāḻttukaḷ becomes "vazhthukal", with zh for ḻ.
Putting a Tamil wish on SubhSandesh's Diwali page
A chat line is often enough. For the one person you want to do more for, the Happy Diwali interactive card on SubhSandesh has a row of wish diyas, each lifting one wish as it is lit, so these lines fit one per diya. It also has a letter in a red-and-gold shagun liffafa and a mithai box that opens onto a Shubh Deepavali card, with love, family and friend modes.
Every line is editable, so you can type Tamil, but we have not tested Tamil fonts on every phone. Press Save, preview on your own phone, then send the private link; it opens in any browser. Shared SubhSandesh pages average 11.1 views each, so it will likely be reopened.
When a Tamil wish, or a link, is the wrong choice
We checked key words in the Tamil Lexicon, not every sentence, and no native speaker has reviewed these lines. If you do not speak Tamil, a wrong pronoun to an elder reads worse than plain English, so have a Tamil speaker check first.
Some people should get a call instead. A grandparent up at 4 AM for the oil bath will remember your voice longer than any card.
