Dev Deepawali 2027: Saturday 13 November on the Varanasi Ghats
Dev Deepawali 2027 falls on Saturday 13 November in Varanasi, when the ghats are lit after the 5:10 PM sunset. Purnima tithi runs from 9:56 AM on Saturday to 8:56 AM on Sunday 14 November by our own calculation, so Saturday is the only evening with the full moon, and Sunday morning is the Kartik Purnima bath.
If you are sending wishes rather than travelling, our nearest data comes from a different festival, Raksha Bandhan 2026 (n = 89 pages): 49.4% of those pages were built on the festival day itself. Across all SubhSandesh pages, 48.3% are opened on a phone, so whatever you send will most likely be read on a small screen. Below: why some calendars print 14 November, how the 84 ghats are lit, official travel facts, and the 2026 to 2028 dates side by side.
Why some Dev Deepawali 2027 pages say Sunday 14 November
Two calendar rules give two answers in 2027. The lamp festival follows the Purnima that covers pradosh, the hours after sunset, and only Saturday evening has it; the sunrise rule (udaya tithi), used for the holy bath, picks the day whose dawn falls inside Purnima, which is Sunday.
On 22 October 2026 we read the ten results DuckDuckGo India returned for "dev deepawali 2027". Four gave Saturday 13 November, three gave Sunday 14 November, and three were general calendars that did not state a day in the snippet. The Sunday pages were computed for New Delhi or for a Haridwar sunrise, which answers the bath question, not the Varanasi lamps question.
We computed the tithi with the open-source Astronomy Engine library for Varanasi: Purnima begins at 9:56 AM IST on 13 November and ends at 8:56 AM on 14 November, one minute from Drik Panchang's Varanasi figures of 9:55 AM and 8:55 AM. Sunset at the ghats is 5:10 PM on both days, so by Sunday dusk the tithi has been Pratipada for more than eight hours.
The moon helps on Saturday too. It rises at about 4:21 PM by our calculation, roughly 49 minutes before sunset, so the full moon is already up when the first lamps are lit.
What Dev Deepawali is: Tripurari Purnima on 84 ghats
Dev Deepawali, the "Diwali of the gods", is Varanasi's lamp festival on the evening of Kartik Purnima, 15 days after Diwali. UP Tourism's Dev Deepavali e-brochure describes lakhs of lamps on the steps of 84 ghats, on boats, along temple corridors and on palace arches across 8 km from Ravi Ghat to Raj Ghat.
The brochure gives two origin stories. In the first, Shiva rides a chariot made of the sun and moon to kill Tripurasura, and the gods, dancing with joy, offer lamps to Kashi; that is why the day is also called Tripurari Purnima. In the second, Shiva wakes on this full moon from his four-month Chaturmas rest, after Vishnu has woken on Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
The same brochure says Kartik Purnima carries extra weight when it falls in Bharani or Rohini nakshatra. In 2027 it does: by our sidereal calculation (Lahiri ayanamsa), the Moon enters Bharani at about 8 AM on 13 November and stays there until early Sunday morning, which covers the whole lamp evening.
How the ghats are lit: the Hazara pillar first, then 84 ghats
The lighting follows an order. UP Tourism's brochure says the Hazara, a red-stone lamp pillar with 1,000 lamp holders built around 1720 by Ahilyabai of Indore, is lit first, and only then do lamps start along the 84 ghats from the Varuna to the Assi.
The modern festival is younger than the legend. The brochure dates the revival to 1985, when Mahant Narayan Guru of the Mangala Gauri temple left tins at tea shops for donations of oil and ghee and began cleaning the ghats. In 1986 the former Kashi Naresh, Vibhuti Narayan Singh, lit the Hazara at Panchganga Ghat, and the revival spread from five ghats.
The main programme sits at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where the brochure records Vedic chanting by 21 Brahmins and 41 girls, then deepdan and the Maha Aarti. The first aarti there was held in 1991, and it has been performed regularly since 14 November 1997. The scale keeps growing: the brochure counts more than 15 lakh diyas in 2020 and a live telecast to 135 countries.
Dev Deepawali 2026, 2027 and 2028 compared
The table below compares three years of Purnima timing at Varanasi, from our Astronomy Engine run, with the lamp evening and the sunrise-rule day each one produces. Every lamp-evening date matches Drik Panchang's Varanasi page for that year.
| Year | Purnima tithi at Varanasi (IST) | Dev Deepawali lamp evening | Sunrise-rule day (Kartik Purnima bath) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 11:43 PM 23 Nov to 8:24 PM 24 Nov | Tuesday 24 November | Tuesday 24 November |
| 2027 | 9:56 AM 13 Nov to 8:56 AM 14 Nov | Saturday 13 November | Sunday 14 November |
| 2028 | 1:09 PM 1 Nov to 2:47 PM 2 Nov | Wednesday 1 November | Thursday 2 November |
The 2026 festival, a month away as of October 2026, is the easy year because one day carries both sunrise and sunset Purnima. Both 2027 and 2028 split, so expect the same Saturday-or-Sunday argument for the next two years; for the lamps, follow the evening column.
Getting to Varanasi for Saturday 13 November 2027
Varanasi district's own travel page puts Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport at Babatpur 22 km from the city and 30 km from Sarnath. UP Tourism's Varanasi page lists the airport at 30 km, so plan for the longer figure on festival evening. The district page also names Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, 16 km away, for Rajdhani and other long-distance trains that skip Varanasi.
For help on the ground, the district page lists a Government of India Tourist Office at 15-B The Mall Road, Cantonment (0542-2501784), and the Regional Tourist Office at the Tourist Bungalow, Parade Kothi, opposite the railway station (0542-2208413). The page carries no update date, so confirm these numbers a week before you go.
Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 November 2027 make a two-night weekend, so most office workers need no leave. UP Tourism lists Varanasi's winter range as 5°C to 15.5°C and advises woollens, which matters on open water after dark.
Watching the lamps: boats, ghat steps and the Sunday bath
UP Tourism's brochure names the evening's draws as music programmes, laser shows, boat trips on the Ganga and fireworks at several ghats, with Dashashwamedh at the centre. It also describes a three-day hot air balloon festival the state tourism department runs before Dev Deepawali, with tickets that sell out instantly, and Alaknanda cruises on the river, running since 2018.
Crowds are the real constraint. A 2024 review in the Journal of Travel Medicine, Sacred journeys and pilgrimages, lists Varanasi's five-day Ganga Mahotsav at 100,000 to 150,000 people a day, and warns that religious mass gatherings bring overcrowding, transport hazards and stampede risk. Since the lamps start at dusk, be on your boat or step before the 5:10 PM sunset rather than walking the ghats as they fill.
If you are staying for the Sunday-morning Kartik Purnima bath, know who usually takes it. In a survey of 154 visitors to Varanasi's ghats (2014 to 2016, published in Turizam in 2021), 60% had bathed in the river, all of them Indian tourists or locals, and none of the foreign visitors surveyed had. Most respondents still rated the water dirty or very dirty, and 69% were seeing the ghats for the first time.
If you can't be at the ghats on 13 November 2027
If you are marking the night from home, lamps at the door and one message to someone far away is the usual shape of it. SubhSandesh has no Dev Deepawali page, and our only lead-time data is from Raksha Bandhan 2026 (n = 89, a different festival): 27.0% of pages were built the day before, and not one more than 7 days ahead. Building on Friday 12 or Saturday 13 November matches how people actually behave.
The closest fit is the interactive Happy Diwali card on SubhSandesh. They light a diya at their door, a row of wish diyas and paper sky lanterns that hold up to six of your photos, then open your letter from a shagun liffafa. It is a Diwali card, so say in the letter that you are sending it for the gods' Diwali; it opens in any phone browser with no app, and pages average 11.1 views each across the platform, so it can be opened again on Sunday.
If you made the trip and someone at home did not, one good ghat photo works better as a photo jigsaw that reveals your letter piece by piece than inside a Diwali card. Each placed piece shows a line of the letter and plays a note, and, as the template describes it, the final piece is not in the box.
When a greeting page is the wrong Dev Deepawali gesture
A link does not replace the river. If your family keeps the Kartik Purnima bath or deepdan on 14 November, take part or call them that morning; a page they tap through cannot carry a lamp to the water.
It is also the wrong pick for a grandparent who does not use a phone screen, since the card only plays on one; a printed photo of the lit ghats or a call during the aarti does more. And the Happy Diwali card's crackers, songs and liffafa are Diwali imagery, with no Hazara, no Ganga and no Tripurari story in it.
