Diwali 2027 Around the World: Official Dates in Nine Countries
Diwali 2027 around the world does not fall on one day. Of the nine countries outside India that keep Diwali as a public holiday, four had published a 2027 date by 22 October 2026: Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka close on Thursday 28 October 2027, and Mauritius closes on Friday 29 October, the same night as Lakshmi Puja in India.
Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and Nepal had not yet named a 2027 date, so for each of them this page gives the latest official date instead, labelled by year. The one-day split matters for greetings: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone and each page is viewed 11.1 times on average (both measured 24 September 2026), so a late wish still gets read, just not on the right evening. Below: why the dates split, each government's listing, and how early each publishes.
Why Singapore says Thursday and Mauritius says Friday in 2027
Two different days carry the name Deepavali. Thursday 28 October 2027 is Naraka Chaturdashi, which north India calls Choti Diwali and Tamil households keep as Deepavali itself; Drik Panchang's Tamil Deepavali page for Chennai gives Thursday 28 October, with the Chaturdashi tithi running from 10:49 PM on 27 October to 8:47 PM on the 28th, and North Indian Deepavali on Friday 29 October.
Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka set their 2027 holiday on the Chaturdashi day. Mauritius sets it on the Amavasya night of Lakshmi Puja, matching Delhi rather than Chennai. India has the same split inside its borders, so a Tamil Nadu calendar and a Delhi calendar can disagree by a day and both be right.
Diwali 2027 holiday status, country by country (checked 22 October 2026)
Each entry gives the 2027 status, the most recent official date, who sets it, and what it means for family there. Every date comes from a government page or notice we opened, not a holiday aggregator.
1. Singapore: Thursday 28 October 2027
The Ministry of Manpower's public holiday list, last updated 19 June 2026, already shows Deepavali on Thursday 28 October 2027. Its entries for the two years before are Monday 20 October 2025 and Sunday 8 November 2026. Because MOM publishes more than a year ahead, plan on Thursday and send wishes on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, India time.
2. Malaysia: Thursday 28 October 2027
The Prime Minister's Department's 2027 federal and state holiday table, posted in August 2026, lists Hari Deepavali on Khamis (Thursday) 28 October 2027 and codes it (P), a federal public holiday. The same document carries the note "Tertakluk kepada perubahan", subject to change. Malaysian holidays differ by state, so read the state columns before booking travel.
3. Sri Lanka: Thursday 28 October 2027
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka's 2027 holiday list gives Deepawali Festival Day on Thursday 28 October 2027, marked B. P., a bank and public holiday. It carries no M for a mercantile holiday, unlike Christmas Day on the same list, which is B. P. M. Sri Lanka's own 2027 gazette was not reachable for us, so treat this list as the working reference.
4. Mauritius: Friday 29 October 2027
The Prime Minister's Office Public Holidays 2027 list puts Divali on Friday 29 October 2027, and Cabinet took note of that list on 28 August 2026, fourteen months ahead. It is the only one of the nine whose 2027 date matches India's Lakshmi Puja; a city calculator ranking for this keyword shows Port Louis on Thursday, which is astronomy, not the declared holiday.
5. Fiji: 2027 not yet gazetted; latest is Monday 9 November 2026
Fiji's Cabinet endorsed 11 public holidays for 2027 on 9 September 2026, but the dates become official only once the employment minister gazettes them. The public holiday page still showed only 2026 in its 12 October 2026 snapshot, with Diwali on Monday 9 November. Indo-Fijians were under 44% of the population by 1997, notes anthropologist Martha Kaplan, yet Diwali is one of Fiji's 11 national holidays.
6. Guyana: 2027 not yet declared; latest is Sunday 8 November 2026, Monday 9 off
Guyana declares Deepavali each year under its Public Holidays Act, Chapter 19:07. The Ministry of Home Affairs notification dated 12 October 2026 names Sunday 8 November 2026 and, because that is a Sunday, also makes Monday 9 November a public holiday. The notice came 27 days before the festival; if 2027 follows the same pattern, the declaration will land in late September or early October 2027.
7. Trinidad and Tobago: 2027 not yet appointed; latest notice found is Thursday 31 October 2024
Divali is a "date to be appointed" holiday under the Public Holidays and Festivals Act, Chap. 19:05, so the President names the day by legal notice every year. Legal Notice No. 174 of 2024, dated 20 September 2024, appointed Thursday 31 October 2024; we did not find the 2025 or 2026 notice. East Indians made up 35.4% of the country's 1,328,019 people in 2011, as anthropologist Viranjini Munasinghe records.
8. Suriname: 2027 not yet announced; latest is Monday 20 October 2025
Suriname's Ministry of Home Affairs announces the Divali date each year. Its 2025 announcement, signed in Paramaribo on 6 October 2025, set the Divali-feest on Monday 20 October 2025 and declared that day "met de zondag gelijkgesteld", treated like a Sunday. No 2026 Divali notice was on the ministry's announcements page on 22 October 2026, 17 days before Diwali 2026.
9. Nepal: Tihar 2027 falls in a holiday year not yet published
Nepal keeps Diwali as Tihar and lists holidays by its Bikram Sambat year, which begins in mid-April. The Ministry of Home Affairs holiday index dates its 2083 BS list, covering Tihar 2026, to 2082-12-05 BS, about mid-March 2026, so the 2084 BS list with Tihar 2027 should follow around March 2027. The 2083 list itself would not load for us, so we give no Tihar 2026 date rather than copy one from an unofficial page.
Who has announced Diwali 2027, and how early each government publishes
The table groups the nine countries by 2027 status on 22 October 2026. The last column is the lead time each government gave for the most recent Diwali date we could read.
| 2027 status | Countries | Most recent official date read | Notice lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday 28 Oct 2027 published | Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka | Thu 28 Oct 2027 | About 16 months (Singapore page updated 19 Jun 2026) |
| Friday 29 Oct 2027 published | Mauritius | Fri 29 Oct 2027 | 14 months (Cabinet, 28 Aug 2026) |
| Declared weeks ahead | Guyana, Suriname | Sun 8 Nov 2026; Mon 20 Oct 2025 | 27 days; 14 days |
| Set by gazette or legal notice | Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago | Mon 9 Nov 2026; Thu 31 Oct 2024 | Gazette after Cabinet (Fiji); 41 days (T&T) |
| Published with the national year | Nepal | 2083 BS list dated 2082-12-05 | About a month before the year starts |
If family lives in one of the bottom three rows, their 2027 date will not be official until a few weeks before the festival. Plan around 28 or 29 October, but hold off on non-refundable bookings until the notice is out.
Diwali 2026 abroad: three countries move the day off Sunday 8 November
Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and three of the nine have moved the day off to Monday 9 November. Mauritius did it through a Prime Minister's Office communiqué of 2 October 2026, using a Public Holidays Act amendment that came into force on 13 August 2026; Guyana's notice adds Monday 9 November, and Fiji lists Diwali on that Monday outright.
Singapore keeps Deepavali on Sunday 8 November with no separate Monday entry on the MOM list, so check your employment terms for a weekday off in lieu. Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname had published no 2026 notice we could find by 22 October.
Sending Diwali wishes to family in these countries in 2027
For Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka the celebration is Thursday, so a greeting timed for India's Friday arrives a day late. Our only festival timing data is from Raksha Bandhan 2026, used here as the nearest festival analogue (n = 89 pages): 49.4% of those pages were built on the festival day itself and 27.0% the day before. For a Thursday country, that day-before habit has to move to Wednesday.
For one person you want to wish on their own evening, SubhSandesh's interactive Happy Diwali card fits. They light a diya at their door with a tag from you, a row of wish diyas, a rangoli that glows with your initials and sky lanterns holding up to six photos, then open your letter from a shagun liffafa. It takes about five minutes, opens from a private link in any browser with no app or account, and has love, family and friend modes.
If the person abroad is a partner you have not seen in months, the miss-you page for someone far away fits better than a festival card. Its "open when" letters and reunion countdown are not tied to one night.
Where this guide, and a greeting link, fall short
Every date here is what a government had published by 22 October 2026, and none of it is final until the gazette says so. Malaysia's table is marked subject to change, five of the nine countries have not set 2027, and we could not open Sri Lanka's own gazette or Nepal's 2083 list, so we say that rather than fill the gaps from unofficial pages.
A link is also the wrong tool in some homes. Tihar in Nepal runs over five days with customs of its own, and a Diwali card's diyas and mithai box cover only part of it. With 48.3% of views on a phone, many people open these pages elsewhere, and a grandparent in Port Louis who uses no screen at all is better reached by a call on their evening.
