- • One IRCTC terms page last modified in May 2026 still says 120 days; PIB's 6 August 2026 backgrounder and the SCR portal both say 60.
- • On SubhSandesh, 86.1% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages finished in time were built within 24 hours of the day (n = 79) — a festival habit that does not survive a 60-day railway window.

Diwali 2027 Travel Planner: When to Book the Train Home
A Diwali 2027 travel planner starts in August, not October. Diwali falls on Friday 29 October 2027, and under Indian Railways' 60-day booking window a seat home on Wednesday 27 October goes on sale at 8 AM on Saturday 28 August, while one on Thursday 28 October opens on Sunday 29 August. That lead time sits badly with how people behave around festivals: on SubhSandesh, 86.1% of the Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages finished in time were built within 24 hours of the day (a one-day festival, not Diwali, and only n = 79). Our "I miss you" pages also name 47 distinct city pairs, chosen from a 15-city picker, so read it as a rough spread of how couples are split rather than a record of where senders live. This planner gives the sale date for every useful travel day, the Tatkal and Aadhaar rules as of October 2026, the 2025 festival round-trip rebate, and a plan B with a deadline.
What a Diwali travel planner has to settle: three dates, not one
A Diwali travel planner is a schedule that ties three dates together: the day you leave, the day each ticket goes on sale, and the day you must be back at work. Most people fix the first and third and forget the second, which is the only one the railway sets for you.
In 2027 the calendar is kind. Friday 29 October is the central government's gazetted Diwali holiday, so Friday to Sunday is already off, and Bhai Dooj lands on Sunday 31 October. Families heading to Bihar, Jharkhand or eastern Uttar Pradesh have a second date to plan around, because Chhath runs from Tuesday 2 to Friday 5 November 2027.
For them the return is usually a post-Chhath ticket. A train home to Delhi or Mumbai on Saturday 6 November 2027 goes on sale on Tuesday 7 September, so the onward and return sales sit ten days apart.
Booking-open dates for each Diwali 2027 travel day
The table compares the five travel days that make sense around Friday 29 October 2027. Dates assume the train leaves its originating station on the journey date shown.
| Journey date | General quota opens, 8 AM | Tatkal opens (AC 10 AM, non-AC 11 AM) | Who this day suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 26 Oct 2027 | Fri 27 Aug 2027 | Mon 25 Oct 2027 | Journeys of 30 hours or more, arriving for Dhanteras |
| Wed 27 Oct 2027 (Dhanteras) | Sat 28 Aug 2027 | Tue 26 Oct 2027 | Overnight trains, home by Thursday morning |
| Thu 28 Oct 2027 | Sun 29 Aug 2027 | Wed 27 Oct 2027 | Short overnight routes, leaving after work |
| Sun 31 Oct 2027 (Bhai Dooj) | Wed 1 Sep 2027 | Sat 30 Oct 2027 | Return after the morning tilak |
| Mon 1 Nov 2027 | Thu 2 Sep 2027 | Sun 31 Oct 2027 | Return with one extra day of leave |
The takeaway: the whole outbound sale for Diwali 2027 happens over one weekend, 27 to 29 August, and the return sale follows four days later. Put both mornings in your calendar now.
The 60-day rule, and the IRCTC page that still says 120
Indian Railways cut the advance reservation period from 120 days to 60 days, a change the Press Information Bureau's backgrounder of 6 August 2026 lists among its recent passenger reforms. The South Central Railway's passenger information portal adds that the window excludes the journey date, opens at 08:00 IST, and that for the first 15 minutes only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can book general-quota tickets online, under Commercial Circular 15 of 2025.
There are two traps. IRCTC's own terms and conditions page, last modified on 21 May 2026 when we read it on 22 October 2026, still defines the opening day as 120 days ahead; that line is out of date, since the PIB release and the zonal portal both say 60.
The second trap is the starting point. The same IRCTC page counts the window from the date the train leaves its originating station, so if you board at 2 AM on 28 October a train that left its origin on 27 October, your sale day is 28 August, not 29 August.
Tatkal for Diwali 2027: 10 AM, 11 AM and Aadhaar first
If the 8 AM sale beats you, Tatkal is the second chance. It opens one day before the journey date from the origin station, at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes, according to the Ministry of Railways' Tatkal scheme page on indianrail.gov.in, which also bars agents from booking between 10:00 and 10:10 and between 11:00 and 11:10.
For a Thursday 28 October departure, Tatkal day is Wednesday 27 October, a working day. Online Tatkal has needed an Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC profile since July 2025, with OTP verification added later, per the same PIB backgrounder, so link Aadhaar to your profile in September rather than on the morning itself.
The Tatkal charge on top of the fare is ₹100 to ₹200 in sleeper and ₹300 to ₹400 in AC 3-tier, as fixed for journeys from 24 December 2015. IRCTC allows at most four passengers on one Tatkal e-ticket and grants no refund when a confirmed Tatkal ticket is cancelled, so a family of five needs two separate bookings and should be sure before paying.
Festival specials and the 2025 round-trip rebate
For Diwali 2025, IRCTC ran a Festival Round Trip Scheme. Per its user guide for the scheme, passengers who booked a confirmed onward journey between 13 and 26 October 2025 and a confirmed return between 17 November and 1 December 2025, for the same people, class and station pair, got 20% off the base fare of the return ticket.
The fine print cut both ways. The return leg was exempt from the 60-day window, but neither leg could be modified, passenger cancellations got no refund, and trains with Flexi fares were excluded. Diwali 2025 fell on 20 October, so the return window opened four weeks after the festival, which suited long stays rather than a long weekend.
As of October 2026 we found no announcement of the scheme for 2027 and no notified 2027 festival special train, so treat both as backups you cannot plan around in August. Volume is the reason to book early anyway: the PIB backgrounder counts 65.08 crore reserved tickets between June 2025 and June 2026, 89% of them booked online.
If you are waitlisted, the same release says the RailOne app now shows an AI prediction of whether a waitlisted ticket will confirm, with accuracy that improved from 53% to 94%. A low prediction in the first week of October is your signal to start plan B rather than wait for the chart, which the SCR portal says is now often prepared about 10 hours before departure.
Train, bus or flight home: what distance research says
Distance decides the mode more than anything else. A 2026 PLOS ONE study of intercity travel in China, using 663,780 records across 362 cities from 2015 to 2018, found rail took around 50% of trips between 200 and 1,000 km, while flights took under 2% of trips below 500 km.
It also found that during the Spring Festival travel rush, the share of road travel rises for short and medium trips. China is not India, and the study says nothing about Indian fares, but the pattern gives a rule of thumb.
- Under about 200 km: a bus or shared car avoids the August sale altogether.
- Between 200 and 1,000 km: the train is the default, and the 27 to 29 August mornings matter most.
- Beyond about 1,000 km: rail still carried 40% to 60% of trips up to 1,600 km in the study, but price a flight on the day you try the train and keep whichever confirms first.
If you can't get home for Diwali 2027: decide by Tatkal morning
Give the trip a deadline. If you have no confirmed seat after Tatkal closes on the day before your journey, say 11:30 AM on Wednesday 27 October, stop refreshing and switch to the version of Diwali you can still control.
For the person waiting at home, SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card with diyas, rangoli and sky lanterns is a one-person page you can build that evening in about five minutes. They light a diya at their door with your tag on it, colour a rangoli until your initials glow, write their name with a sparkler and send up sky lanterns holding up to six photos, then open your letter from a shagun liffafa and a box of mithai on a Shubh Deepavali card. There are love, family and friend modes, and the private link opens in any phone or laptop browser with no app or account.
If the person you can't reach is a partner, SubhSandesh's "I miss you" page with a reunion countdown fits better, though it is a long-distance page, not a Diwali one. Only 13.6% of its senders record a voice note (29 of 214 pages in its first two months), yet for a missed train a voice note may say more than any letter. Since 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, assume it will be read in a kitchen or on a crowded platform.
When this plan, or a greeting page, is the wrong answer
The planner assumes Friday 29 October is a holiday for you. It is on the central government list, but private employers set their own, so confirm with HR before the 28 August sale rather than after.
It is also the wrong tool for anyone who can travel by road in a few hours,. And a greeting page is a poor stand-in when someone at home is ill, newly bereaved or alone for the first Diwali: there a flight, even an expensive one, or a long phone call on the evening of 29 October does more than any link.
