- • Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) from 2027 to 2036 falls on 29 Oct 2027, 17 Oct 2028, 5 Nov 2029, 26 Oct 2030, 14 Nov 2031, 2 Nov 2032, 22 Oct 2033, 10 Nov 2034, 30 Oct 2035 and 18 Oct 2036.
- • Every date was computed from the Amavasya tithi and Delhi sunset, and each new moon matched US Naval Observatory data to within one minute.
- • Extra lunar months in 2029, 2031 and 2034 stretch the gap between Diwalis to 384 days, which is why those years land in November.
- • 2036 is the edge year: Amavasya overlaps Delhi's evening window by only 29 minutes on 18 October, and Kolkata's only on 19 October.
- • On Raksha Bandhan 2026 (nearest analogue, n = 89), 49.4% of SubhSandesh greeting pages were built on the day itself, so the decade list is for leave and travel, not for greetings.

Diwali Dates for Next 10 Years (2027–2036), Each One Checked
Here are the Diwali dates for next 10 years, meaning the Lakshmi Puja night, calculated for New Delhi: Friday 29 October 2027, Tuesday 17 October 2028, Monday 5 November 2029, Saturday 26 October 2030, Friday 14 November 2031, Tuesday 2 November 2032, Saturday 22 October 2033, Friday 10 November 2034, Tuesday 30 October 2035 and Saturday 18 October 2036. We computed each one from the Amavasya tithi and Delhi's sunset, then matched every new moon to the US Naval Observatory to within a minute.
Use the list for leave, travel and family plans, not for greetings. On Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival SubhSandesh has data for (n = 89 pages, a different festival and a small sample), 49.4% of greeting pages were built on the festival day itself, and not one was built more than 7 days ahead.
The ten Diwali dates, 2027 to 2036, with the Amavasya window
Each line gives the Lakshmi Puja date, then the Amavasya tithi in IST from our own calculation. Amavasya ends at the exact moment of the new moon, which is why the USNO moon-phase data is a direct check on every line.

The Drik Panchang Lakshmi Puja list gives the same dates for 2027 to 2034. For the last two years we checked mpanchang's festival calendars for 2035 and 2036, which also put Lakshmi Puja on 30 October 2035 and 18 October 2036.
How the night is chosen: Amavasya after sunset, after 17 October
Lakshmi Puja is done on the evening when Amavasya is still running in pradosh, the window just after sunset, which we took as 2 hours 24 minutes. In eight of the ten years Amavasya covers Delhi's whole window on the chosen night. In 2027 it covers 88 minutes and in 2036 only 29, and those are the two nights where panchangs are most likely to disagree.
Which new moon counts is fixed by the Sun. Diwali closes the lunar month in which the Sun enters sidereal Libra, Tula, and our calculation puts that entry on 17 or 18 October every year from 2027 to 2036. So Diwali is the first new moon after about 17 October, which is why it never falls earlier than mid-October.
The closest call of the decade is 2028. The Sun enters Tula at 08:03 IST on 17 October 2028 and the new moon arrives at 08:27 IST the next morning, a margin of about 24 hours. Had the order been reversed, Diwali 2028 would have moved to mid-November.
Why Diwali jumps 19 days later in 2029, 2031 and 2034
Twelve lunar months last about 354 days, so a date tied to the Moon arrives roughly 11 days earlier each year. Between our dates the gap is 354 or 355 days seven times. Three times it is 384 days, and each of those years carries an extra lunar month.
Ebenezer Burgess's translation of the Surya Siddhanta, printed in volume 6 of the Journal of the American Oriental Society, gives the rule: when two lunar months begin in the same solar month, the first is an intercalary month, adhimasa, named after the one that follows. The same text sets 1,593,336 intercalary months against 51,840,000 solar months in its great cycle, which works out to one extra month every 32.5 solar months.
| Year | Extra month (new moon to new moon, IST, our calculation) | Diwali before | Diwali after | Days between |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Adhik Jyeshtha, 17 May to 15 Jun | Mon 20 Oct 2025 | Sun 8 Nov 2026 | 384 |
| 2029 | Adhik Chaitra, 15 Mar to 14 Apr | Tue 17 Oct 2028 | Mon 5 Nov 2029 | 384 |
| 2031 | Adhik Bhadrapada, 18 Aug to 17 Sep | Sat 26 Oct 2030 | Fri 14 Nov 2031 | 384 |
| 2034 | Adhik Ashadha, 16 Jun to 15 Jul | Sat 22 Oct 2033 | Fri 10 Nov 2034 | 384 |
Every November Diwali in the decade (2029, 2031, 2032 and 2034) sits in or just after one of these years. The 2029 month is a tight one: by our approximate Lahiri ayanamsa the Sun enters Mesha only about 31 minutes after the new moon of 14 April 2029, so the panchang maker's own ayanamsa decides the boundary. The Diwali date is unaffected, because the extra month falls in spring either way.
2036: the year Kolkata's evening may fall on a different day
Amavasya in 2036 begins at 19:43 IST on Saturday 18 October and ends at 17:20 IST on Sunday 19 October. That timing puts the overlap with the evening window right at the edge, and the answer depends on when the Sun sets in your city.
- Mumbai: sunset 18:13 on the 18th, 54 minutes of Amavasya in the window; none on the 19th.
- Ahmedabad: sunset 18:11 on the 18th, 52 minutes; none on the 19th.
- Delhi and Chennai: sunset 17:48 on the 18th, 29 minutes; none on the 19th.
- Kolkata: sunset 17:08 on the 18th, so the window closes at 19:32, before Amavasya begins. On the 19th the Sun sets at 17:07 and Amavasya is still running for about 13 minutes.
So most of India points to Saturday 18 October 2036, while a panchang computed for Kolkata could choose Sunday 19 October. At least one ranking 20-year list already prints 19 October. Bengal's Kali Puja follows a midnight rule rather than this evening one, and Amavasya covers the midnight of 18 to 19 October either way.
Six of the ten fall on a Friday or Saturday
The weekdays spread unevenly. Three Diwalis land on Friday (2027, 2031, 2034), three on Saturday (2030, 2033, 2036), three on Tuesday (2028, 2032, 2035) and one on Monday (2029). None falls on a Sunday in this decade.
A Friday Diwali gives the cleanest long weekend for a trip home: in 2027, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj fall on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October. A Tuesday one splits the week, so anyone travelling far will want to plan leave around it early. State and central holiday lists are announced year by year, so treat these as the astronomical dates, not as notified holidays.
Why ten-year lists online disagree, and a three-step check
We compared the top-ranked lists for this search in India on 22 October 2026. The first result, a 100-year table on a ghee shop's blog, agrees with our dates for 2027 to 2029 and is then wrong for 7 of the 10 years. It is a day early for 2030 and 2032 to 2036, and a full month early for 2031, where it prints 14 October instead of 14 November.
Another 20-year list matches every year except 2036, where it has Sunday 19 October. Our own calculation used Astronomy Engine 2.1.19, an open-source ephemeris library, with Delhi's coordinates. Any list can be checked the same way in three steps:
- Find the new moon nearest late October or November in the USNO data, then convert it to IST by adding 5 hours 30 minutes.
- Diwali is that date or the day before, whichever evening still has Amavasya running just after sunset.
- The date must come after the Sun enters Tula, around 17 October. A Diwali printed before 17 October has the wrong month.
Sending the greeting on whichever night it lands
Whatever the year, the greeting goes out on the night itself, and the person opening it is usually on a phone. Across SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone, and the Raksha Bandhan 2026 figures above suggest most people build their greeting on the day.
For one person you want to wish, the interactive Diwali card on SubhSandesh lets them light a diya at their door, light a row of wish diyas, colour a rangoli with your initials, write with a sparkler and open a letter from a shagun liffafa. It takes about five minutes, works for love, family or a friend, and opens as a private link in any browser with no app or account.
For a couple who like the idea of looking ahead, Capsule seals predictions you both write about the coming year and opens a year later. Sealed on Diwali 2027, it opens on 29 October 2028, 12 days after that year's Diwali, because the festival slides earlier.
Where this list, and a greeting page, fall short
The dates are computed for New Delhi with an approximate Lahiri ayanamsa, so a regional panchang can differ by a day in edge years such as 2036. Tamil Deepavali follows a different rule, Chaturdashi before sunrise, and mpanchang puts it on 29 October 2035, a day before Lakshmi Puja.
This is a date list, not a muhurat. For puja timings, use your family's panchang for the year itself. The SubhSandesh page is a greeting for one person, not a calendar or a puja guide, and the platform has no Diwali usage data yet because the template is new.
