- • Start from the person: a booked check-up for parents (about ₹2,500–6,000 for two), a Bhai Dooj outing for a sibling, hometown sweets for a friend, an ISI-marked toy for a child, a donation in your in-laws' names (Oct 2026, EST).
- • A SubhSandesh page made for one person is viewed 11.1 times on average, 48.3% of those views on a phone, so it works as the add-on that keeps being reopened.
- • Givers overrate surprise: in a 2026 Behavioral Sciences study, givers scored surprise 8.61 out of 10 against 7.62 for recipients.
- • As of October 2026, cash from non-relatives becomes taxable for the recipient once the year's total exceeds ₹50,000 (section 92, Income-tax Act, 2025), with gold and silver on a separate ₹50,000 line; gifts from relatives are never taxed.

Diwali Gift Ideas Sorted by Who It Is For and What You Can Spend
The Diwali gift ideas that land start from the person, not the shop: a booked health check-up for parents, a shared outing for a sibling, a hometown mithai box for a friend, an ISI-marked toy or a diya-painting kit for a child, and a donation in your in-laws' names. Then add one small thing that keeps being opened. On SubhSandesh, a page made for one person is viewed 11.1 times on average, and 48.3% of those views happen on a phone, which is why a personal page works best as the add-on rather than the main gift.
Timing decides as much as the idea. In our nearest festival analogue, Raksha Bandhan 2026 (n = 89 pages, not Diwali data), 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself and the median lead time was zero days. So every idea below carries a notice period and a budget band labelled as an October 2026 estimate, plus the ₹50,000 gift-tax line and the toy-safety mark.
What makes something a Diwali gift, and when it changes hands in 2027
A Diwali gift is anything given to family, friends or neighbours across the five-day festival, usually carried in person on visits before Lakshmi Puja. It differs from a birthday present because it is reciprocal and seasonal: the same households exchange every year, so this year's gift is quietly read against last year's.
In 2027 the five days run from Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October to Bhai Dooj on Sunday 31 October, with Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October, per the Drik Panchang calendar for New Delhi. Brothers and sisters traditionally exchange gifts on Bhai Dooj, so a sibling's present can wait for the Sunday.
Diwali gift ideas for parents, siblings, friends, kids and in-laws
Each entry gives the idea, who it suits, the budget and the notice it needs. Every price is a rough metro estimate for October 2026 (EST) and will move by city. There are no shop links.
1. Parents: a booked health check-up, or the old prints rescued
Book a full-body check-up for both of them at a lab they already trust, scheduled for the week after Diwali. It suits parents over 50 who chase everyone else's tests and postpone their own. Budget: about ₹2,500–6,000 for two (Oct 2026, EST), with around a week's notice because home sample-collection slots fill before festivals.
The smaller version is the shoebox of prints. Have 40–60 old family photographs scanned and printed into a slim album, for about ₹1,200–2,500 (Oct 2026, EST), with five to seven days' notice.
2. Siblings: an outing on Bhai Dooj, or a month of the class they keep mentioning
Buy two tickets for something you will both attend on Sunday 31 October 2027: a stand-up set, a match screening, a food walk through the old city. It suits siblings in the same city whose only shared time is a family function. Budget: about ₹800–2,500 per head (Oct 2026, EST), booked one to two weeks ahead.
For a sibling in another city, pay for one month of the course they keep bringing up, whether pottery, a dance batch or a language class. That runs roughly ₹1,500–4,000 (Oct 2026, EST) and can be arranged online the same day.
3. Friends: a hometown mithai box, a recipe-and-masala jar, or dinner you cook
Order a box from the sweet shop in their hometown rather than the chain near you, because the name printed on the lid is the gift. It suits a friend who moved cities for work. Budget: about ₹600–1,200 a kilo plus courier (Oct 2026, EST), with two to four days for intercity delivery.
Under ₹500, write out the recipe for the dish they always ask you to make and pair it with a jar of the masala, about ₹200–500 (Oct 2026, EST). At the top end, cook dinner for four to six friends during Diwali week, about ₹1,500–3,000 in groceries (Oct 2026, EST).
4. Kids: an ISI-marked toy, a diya-painting kit, or binoculars for a dark sky
Buy a toy that carries the ISI mark; it suits any child under twelve. The Bureau of Indian Standards explains (30 April 2023) that since 1 January 2021 no toy may be sold in India unless it meets seven Indian Standards covering choking parts, sharp edges, flammability and toxic elements such as cadmium and mercury. Budget: about ₹500–2,000 (Oct 2026, EST), bought the same day.
Plain clay diyas and paints, about ₹300–700 (Oct 2026, EST), let five-to-twelve-year-olds decorate the lamps lit on Lakshmi Puja night. And because Lakshmi Puja falls on amavasya, the moonless night, child-sized binoculars at about ₹600–1,500 (Oct 2026, EST) get the darkest sky of the month to start on.
5. In-laws: a donation in their names, plus one thing for the house
Give in their names to the temple trust, gaushala, school or langar they already support, in a shagun-style amount such as ₹1,100, ₹2,100 or ₹5,100, and tuck the receipt inside the card. It suits in-laws who say they have everything and mean it. It needs no notice, since most trusts accept UPI.
Pair it with a framed print of a wedding or family photograph they never received a copy of. That costs about ₹800–2,000 (Oct 2026, EST) and needs three to five days.
Diwali gift formats compared by budget, notice and how often they are used
Most Diwali gifts take one of four forms. The last column is the only place SubhSandesh has its own measurement.
| Gift format | Budget band (Oct 2026, EST) | Notice needed | Use, as measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bought item (sweets, toy, album) | ₹300–2,500 | Same day to 7 days | Kept or eaten; not measured here |
| Booked experience (check-up, class, tickets) | ₹800–6,000 | 1–2 weeks | Used once, on a set date |
| Cash, gold or silver coin | ₹1,100 upward | Same day | Taxable above ₹50,000 a year from non-relatives (Oct 2026) |
| Personal Diwali page on SubhSandesh | Not priced on this page | About 5 minutes; 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages built on the day (n = 89) | 11.1 views per page on average, 48.3% on a phone |
Only the page gets reopened, and only the experience is shared time. A list that mixes one of each works better than three versions of the same box.
What gift research says Diwali givers get wrong
Givers overrate surprise. In three experiments published on 29 August 2026, Puente-Díaz and Cavazos-Arroyo found in Behavioral Sciences that people assigned the giver's role rated originality and surprise as more important than people assigned the recipient's role. In the first experiment, givers scored the importance of surprise 8.61 out of 10 against 7.62 for recipients.
For Diwali, that means the parent who answers "nothing new, just come home" is probably telling the truth. The check-up and hometown sweets above follow that logic.
In Stenlund and colleagues' 2024 study in Communications Psychology, 200 people in seven countries each received US$10,000, and gifts for others, donations and experiences were among the purchases that made them happiest. Those assigned to share their spending publicly got less happiness from their gifts (b = −0.23); no Indian participants were sampled, so read it as a hint: give the gift, skip the Instagram post.
Is a Diwali gift taxed in India? The ₹50,000 line
A gift from a relative is never taxed, but a gift from a friend can be. As of October 2026 the rule is section 92(2)(m) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, which replaced section 56(2)(x) of the 1961 Act from the 2026-27 tax year. The Income Tax Department's guide to gifts defines relatives as your spouse, siblings, your spouse's siblings, your parents' siblings, lineal ascendants and descendants on both sides, and their spouses.
Cash from non-relatives becomes taxable once the year's total exceeds ₹50,000, and then the whole amount is taxed, not just the excess; jewellery, bullion, shares and art sit on a separate ₹50,000 line, by market value. Section 92(3) exempts gifts on your own marriage but names no festival, so Diwali gives no cover; a television set is not taxed because it is not prescribed property. Check with your CA before a large gift.
Where a SubhSandesh Diwali page fits in the gift list
A page is not a substitute for the five gifts above; it is the card that travels with them, or the gift for the person you cannot reach. The Happy Diwali page opens to a diya at their door with a tag from you, then wish diyas, a rangoli that reveals your initials, sparkler writing and sky lanterns holding up to six photos. After a crackers playground drawn with no noise or smoke, your letter opens from a shagun liffafa and a mithai box opens onto a Shubh Deepavali card.
You pick love, family or friend mode, add a YouTube song, and the AI can write the wishes from a short story. It takes about five minutes and sends as a private link that opens in any browser with no app or account, so make a Happy Diwali page for one person on your list once the physical gifts are sorted.
For a sibling far away who likes puzzles, The Last Piece photo jigsaw fits better: each piece placed reveals a line of your letter. It is not a Diwali template, so send it alongside the Bhai Dooj gift.
When a Diwali page is the wrong gift
A child under eight wants the toy, not a link, and an elder who does not use a smartphone gets nothing from a page; 48.3% of our views come from phones, but every view needs a screen. If you will be in the same room on 29 October 2027, hand over the box.
The Diwali page is new, so SubhSandesh has no Diwali usage data, and the lead-time figures above are borrowed from Raksha Bandhan 2026, a different festival with 89 pages. Corporate and employee gifting is a different question with its own budgets and rules, and is not covered here.
