- • Plan two Diwali Instagram posts a day from Dhanteras (Wed 27 Oct 2027) to Bhai Dooj (Sun 31 Oct), each shot in one window rather than all night.
- • On Lakshmi Puja, 29 Oct 2027, the blue-sky window after sunset runs 17:39–18:03 in New Delhi and 18:07–18:29 in Mumbai (our calculation, matching USNO sunsets).
- • A 2022 study found memory for paintings worse after photographing them, even at five photos each; screenshots were worse still in a 2025 study.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, and 38.5% of creators password-protect theirs: plan for a small screen and ask before posting other people.

Diwali Instagram Post Ideas: 10 Photos for 27–31 October 2027
The best Diwali Instagram post ideas are planned by day, not by mood: two shots for each of the five days from Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October to Bhai Dooj on Sunday 31 October 2027, each taken inside one short window of light. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,725 of 57,456 views, measured 24 September 2026), and when we measured Raksha Bandhan 2026 as the nearest festival we have data for (n = 89 pages), 49.4% were built on the festival day itself. Leaving photos to the night means shooting in the dark, between guests.
Below: 10 original ideas, a dated shoot plan with New Delhi and Mumbai sunset times, what photo research says about how much to shoot, and a privacy check.
What counts as a Diwali Instagram post idea, and what this list leaves out
A Diwali Instagram post idea is the photo or carousel you plan before the day, decided by subject, frame and time of shooting. It is not the caption, the reel or a quote graphic.
Every idea is for a personal account, not a brand calendar. At the time of writing (October 2026), Instagram allows up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel and keeps a portrait photo uncropped up to 3:4, which is 1080 × 1440 pixels; check the app before you post.
Shoot in one 25-minute window, then put the phone down
A 2022 study in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review found people remembered paintings worse after photographing them, and the effect held when they took five photos of each painting instead of one. A 2025 paper in Memory & Cognition found that saving images by photo or by screenshot both hurt memory, with screenshots doing the most damage.
Not all of it points one way. In a 2025 museum study of 120 students, the photo-taking group showed less decline on the delayed recall test than the other groups, which the authors read as photos acting as a retrieval cue. Across 3 field and 6 lab experiments, photo-taking raised enjoyment when it increased engagement and lowered it when it interfered (abstract read only).
So shoot each day's two ideas in one planned window, then stop. On Lakshmi Puja evening, 29 October 2027, the sun sets at 17:39 in New Delhi and civil twilight ends at 18:03; in Mumbai the window runs 18:07 to 18:29. That gives a blue sky behind lit diyas, and leaves the puja to you.
10 Diwali Instagram post ideas, day by day from 27 to 31 October 2027
Each idea lists format, when to shoot, what you need and who to ask, in that order.
1. Found in the safai (Dhanteras, Wed 27 Oct)
The Diwali clean-out always surfaces something: a school ID card, a cassette, a 1998 wedding card. Lay each on the same plain bedsheet and shoot from directly above.
- Format: carousel of 6–8 frames, last frame the cleared shelf
- Shoot: late morning by a window
- You need: one plain sheet, same height every frame
- Ask first: whoever owns the letter or photo you found
2. The new purchase beside the oldest one (Dhanteras, Wed 27 Oct)
Put this year's Dhanteras buy, a steel kadhai or a silver coin, next to the oldest object of its kind in the house. Thirty years apart, they say more than a posed portrait.
- Format: single photo
- Shoot: 17:40–18:05 in New Delhi, 18:08–18:30 in Mumbai
- You need: both objects wiped clean and one lit diya
- Ask first: nobody, unless a bill or address shows
3. The handwritten Diwali list (Choti Diwali, Thu 28 Oct)
Every house has a list on an envelope, puja samagri and sweets half struck off. Photograph it flat with the pen across it.
- Format: single photo
- Shoot: the afternoon of 28 October, while the list is live
- You need: daylight from one side
- Ask first: the person whose handwriting it is
4. One sweet in five stages (Choti Diwali, Thu 28 Oct)
Pick the sweet your family makes rather than buys; shoot five stages from one angle: ingredients, dough, shaping, frying or setting, the finished tray. The recipe can go on a sixth, text-only frame.
- Format: carousel of 5–6 frames
- Shoot: whenever the cooking happens, phone fixed in one spot
- You need: a phone stand or a stack of books
- Ask first: the cook, in case the recipe is a family secret
5. The photographer's photo (Lakshmi Puja, Fri 29 Oct)
One person usually takes every Diwali photo and appears in none. Prop the phone, set the 10-second timer and put them in the middle.
- Format: single photo, or 2 frames with the outtake
- Shoot: 17:39–18:03 in New Delhi, 18:07–18:29 in Mumbai
- You need: a stable surface at chest height
- Ask first: everyone in the frame, and the parents of any child
6. The street from the terrace, three times (Lakshmi Puja, Fri 29 Oct)
Shoot the same view from your roof or balcony at sunset, at twilight's end and at 20:00, without moving the phone. Swiped in order, the frames show the street lighting up.
- Format: carousel of 3 frames
- Shoot: 17:39, 18:03 and 20:00 in New Delhi
- You need: the phone wedged or taped in place
- Ask first: nobody, if no neighbour's window is close enough to see inside
7. The Annakut count (Govardhan Puja, Sat 30 Oct)
Give each Annakut dish one frame from above, then end on the full spread with the total written on it. For Gujarati households this is also Bestu Varas, the new year.
- Format: carousel of up to 20 frames
- Shoot: after the offering is arranged, before it is served
- You need: light behind you, so your shadow stays off the plates
- Ask first: whoever leads the puja
8. The morning after (Govardhan Puja, Sat 30 Oct)
Burnt-out wicks, a pool of wax, a half-swept rangoli: the morning after Lakshmi Puja is quieter than any night shot. Get it before the sweeping starts.
- Format: single photo
- Shoot: early on 30 October, before the house wakes
- You need: the doorstep as it was left
- Ask first: nobody, but keep the house number out
9. The birth-order line-up (Bhai Dooj, Sun 31 Oct)
Line up every sibling and cousin by age, oldest on the left, and repeat that order every year. The second frame is plain text: each name and birth year.
- Format: 2-frame carousel
- Shoot: after the tilak, while everyone is dressed
- You need: one person directing and the 10-second timer
- Ask first: everyone, and a parent for anyone under 18
10. The thali, then the tilak (Bhai Dooj, Sun 31 Oct)
Frame one is the Bhai Dooj thali, shot from above. Frame two is a close crop of the tilak on the forehead, which shows the ritual without a full face.
- Format: 2-frame carousel
- Shoot: just before and just after the tilak
- You need: the thali on a plain surface
- Ask first: both siblings
Diwali 2027 shoot-and-post plan, with sunset times
The table maps the ideas to the five days, with each day's sunset and end of civil twilight from our calculation with the open-source Astronomy Engine. It matches the US Naval Observatory's sunsets of 17:39 for New Delhi and 18:07 for Mumbai on 29 October 2027.
| Date (2027) | Festival day | New Delhi: sunset → twilight end | Mumbai: sunset → twilight end | Ideas |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wed 27 Oct | Dhanteras | 17:40 → 18:05 | 18:08 → 18:30 | 1, 2 |
| Thu 28 Oct | Choti Diwali | 17:40 → 18:04 | 18:07 → 18:30 | 3, 4 |
| Fri 29 Oct | Lakshmi Puja | 17:39 → 18:03 | 18:07 → 18:29 | 5, 6 |
| Sat 30 Oct | Govardhan Puja, Gujarati New Year | 17:38 → 18:02 | 18:06 → 18:29 | 7, 8 |
| Sun 31 Oct | Bhai Dooj | 17:37 → 18:01 | 18:06 → 18:28 | 9, 10 |
The window sits about 28 minutes later in Mumbai. In Tamil Nadu, holiday lists put Deepavali on 29 October while Drik Panchang lists 28 October, so check your family's day first.
Before you post: who is in the frame
Most of these ideas include other people or their homes. On SubhSandesh, 38.5% of creators password-protect a page before sharing it (2,000 of 5,199), so more than a third of people want some greetings seen by one person, not everyone.
Ask every adult in the frame, and a parent for every child, before a public post. Crop out house numbers and number plates. If a photo is for family only, a Close Friends Story or a private account suits it better than the public grid.
When a photo is meant for one person, not your followers
Some photos are not posts: your grandmother lighting the first diya may mean more to one cousin in Toronto than to 400 followers.
For that one person, SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card with your photos holds up to six photos in paper sky lanterns, with a diya at their door carrying your tag and a letter in a shagun liffafa. It takes about five minutes and opens as a private link in any phone browser, with no app or account. If one photo matters most, the photo jigsaw that reveals a letter as it is solved also works, though it is a general template rather than a Diwali one.
When these Diwali Instagram post ideas are the wrong choice
Skip the public post in a year of mourning, when many families keep Diwali quiet, and skip it if the person you most want to reach is not on Instagram.
The 2022 and 2025 memory studies are a reason to cap yourself at the planned frames. SubhSandesh is the wrong tool for public posting: our Diwali page is a one-person greeting, and we have no Diwali usage data to show how often it is opened.
