- • At 3 metres, the smallest comfortably readable lowercase letter on a Diwali poster is about 10.5 mm tall; at 5 metres it is 17.5 mm.
- • Yellow lettering on orange scores 2.17:1 on the WCAG contrast formula and fails even the 3:1 headline test; navy on gold scores 11.41:1.
- • In a 2026 eye-tracking study of 96 adults, pictures on posters caught attention three to seven times faster than logos, so one large symbol beats many small ones.
- • A fair 20-mark poster rubric gives 4 marks to legibility from 3 metres and 4 to an original slogan of eight words or fewer.
- • 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so a poster shared on WhatsApp needs a 1,080 × 1,920 canvas and a headline spanning a third of the width.

Diwali Poster Ideas for School and Competition, with Slogans
A Diwali poster wins a school competition when a judge can read its slogan from 3 metres and get its idea in one glance, so settle the words, layout and colours before you open the paints. At 3 metres, vision research puts the smallest comfortably readable lowercase letter at about 10.5 mm.
If the poster will also travel as a photo, design for a phone too: 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on one, and 48.4% of views come from a touch device. In our Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, the nearest festival analogue we have (n = 89), 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself, so leave a margin.
Below are six layouts, letter sizes by distance, colour pairs that pass a contrast test, original slogans, materials and a 20-mark judging rubric. Drawing steps are left out on purpose.
What makes a Diwali poster different from a Diwali drawing?
A Diwali poster is one picture plus one message, built to be read by people walking past. A drawing is judged on the picture; a poster is judged on whether the message lands in the few seconds a viewer gives it, so one dominant image, a short slogan and large letters matter more than artistic skill.
The image does the catching. In a 2026 eye-tracking study of 96 adults viewing charity posters, pictures caught attention three to seven times faster than logos and drew two to seven times more fixations. Those were food-bank appeals on a screen, not festival posters, but the lesson carries: one large diya beats ten small symbols.
Six Diwali poster layouts for school and competition
Each layout lists the arrangement, the theme it suits, the headline size for a 3-metre viewing distance, and the time a Class 6–10 student needs. Sizes assume an A3 sheet (297 × 420 mm) or chart paper.
1. One-symbol centre
- Arrangement: one large diya or akash kandil filling the middle half, the slogan in a band across the bottom third, the name small in a corner.
- Suits: "festival of lights" themes and Classes 1–5.
- Headline: lowercase letters 20 mm tall, about twice the 3-metre minimum.
- Time: about 2 hours.
2. Thirds split
- Arrangement: the picture fills the top two-thirds and a two-line slogan the bottom third, divided by a thin border strip.
- Suits: open-theme contests where the slogan carries as many marks as the picture.
- Headline: 20 mm for line one, 12 mm for line two.
- Time: about 2.5 hours.
3. Five-day strip
- Arrangement: five vertical panels for Dhanteras (Wednesday 27 October 2027), Choti Diwali (28), Lakshmi Puja (Friday 29), Govardhan Puja (30) and Bhai Dooj (Sunday 31), each with one symbol and its date.
- Suits: "know your festival" themes.
- Headline: 20 mm for the title, 11 mm for panel labels.
- Time: about 3 hours, since five small pictures take longer than one.
4. Before-and-after eco split
- Arrangement: the left half shows a street under a smoke-grey sky, the right half the same street under a clear sky lit by diyas, with the slogan bridging the centre line.
- Suits: "green Diwali" and clean-air topics.
- Headline: 20 mm, plus one fact line at 11 mm.
- Time: about 2.5 hours.
5. Safety checklist
- Arrangement: a family watching from a doorway across the top half, then three or four numbered checks below, such as water ready and an adult beside every child.
- Suits: "safe Diwali" topics and Classes 3–7.
- Headline: 20 mm, check lines 12 mm, four lines at most.
- Time: about 2 hours.
6. Bilingual typographic poster
- Arrangement: no main picture; the slogan is the image, large in Devanagari with an English line beneath, inside a diya border.
- Suits: senior classes and contests that reward lettering.
- Headline: 30 mm, because Devanagari's top bar and matras need room.
- Time: about 3 hours, including pencil guidelines.
How big should the letters on a Diwali poster be?
In a 2011 Journal of Vision review, Legge and Bigelow found text is read at full speed when its lowercase x-height spans roughly 0.2° to 2° of visual angle, which at 40 cm means 1.4 mm to 14 mm. Scaling that 0.2° floor to poster distances gives these minimum x-heights, which we calculated:
- 3 metres (a judge standing back): 10.5 mm
- 5 metres (an assembly hall wall): 17.5 mm
- 8 metres (the back of a hall): 28 mm
These are floors for normal eyesight, not targets. Our rule of thumb, an editorial choice rather than a research finding, is to double them for the slogan.
There is a harder limit beneath. Eye charts have long treated a letter filling 5 minutes of arc as the unit of normal visual acuity, as P. T. V. M. de Jong's 2022 history of optotypes in Eye records. At 3 metres that letter is 4.4 mm tall, so anything smaller is not hard to read from the judging line; it is invisible.
Which Diwali colours can you read on a poster?
W3C's WCAG 2.2 asks for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. It was written for screens, but the luminance maths applies to any colour pair a person reads. We ran the WCAG formula on five common Diwali pairs using standard screen colour values; paints vary, so treat these as a guide.
| Text on background | Contrast ratio (our calculation) | Small text, 4.5:1 | Headline, 3:1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navy (#000080) on gold (#FFD700) | 11.41:1 | Pass | Pass |
| Gold (#FFD700) on maroon (#800000) | 7.81:1 | Pass | Pass |
| White on red (#FF0000) | 4.00:1 | Fail | Pass |
| Yellow (#FFFF00) on orange (#FF8C00) | 2.17:1 | Fail | Fail |
| White on saffron (#FF9933) | 2.13:1 | Fail | Fail |
The festive yellow-on-orange look fails even the headline test. Keep orange and yellow for flames and glow, and letter in navy, maroon or black.
Original Diwali poster slogans, by theme
Every line below is original to this page. Where a contest demands the student's own slogan, treat these as models: eight words or fewer reads at 3 metres.
Light and togetherness
- One diya at every door, no dark street anymore.
- Light the lamp, then light the lane.
- एक दीया, सबका उजाला (Ek diya, sabka ujala): one lamp, light for everyone.
Green Diwali
- Count the diyas, not the decibels.
- Clear skies are the best fireworks.
- Clay lamps go back to the earth. Plastic does not.
For a fact line, a 2019 Lung India study measured peak PM2.5 of 10,390 µg/m³ from sparklers and 64,500 µg/m³ from snake tablets at the distance people normally stand. Quote one number; a poster has room for one.
Safety
- Watching is part of the show. Stand back.
- Bright night, safe sight.
- One bucket of water, one grown-up, every time.
In a hospital study of 65 firework eye injuries in Eastern India from 2017 to 2020, 60% happened to bystanders and 95.4% of patients wore no eye protection. The injured were mostly watching, not lighting, which is why "stand back" can carry a whole poster.
Everyone's festival
- Many lamps, many prayers, one night of light.
- A lamp in the window for those far from home.
Poster materials and a 20-mark judging rubric
Budget about ₹250–450 for an A3 poster (October 2026, EST): a cartridge sheet or chart paper at ₹10–20, a 12-shade poster-colour set at ₹120–200, sketch pens at ₹60–120, and a black marker at ₹30–50 for outlining letters. Skip glitter on lettering, since shine catches hall lights and washes letters out.
Schools set their own criteria, and a published rubric always wins. Without one, this is the 20-mark rubric we would use:
- Theme and message (5 marks): one clear point about the set topic.
- Slogan (4 marks): original, eight words or fewer, tied to the picture.
- Legibility from 3 metres (4 marks): small print at least 10.5 mm.
- Layout and focal point (3 marks): one dominant image, an obvious reading order.
- Colour contrast (2 marks): lettering passes the 3:1 headline test above.
- Neatness and materials (2 marks): clean edges, nothing that contradicts the theme.
Making a digital Diwali poster for WhatsApp
A poster photographed for a class group or family chat ends up on a phone, the device behind 48.3% of SubhSandesh page opens. Use a 1,080 × 1,920 pixel portrait canvas and make the headline span at least a third of the width; lettering sized for 3 metres on A3 shrinks to a few millimetres on a 6-inch screen.
If there is one person you want to wish, such as a grandparent in another city, SubhSandesh's interactive Happy Diwali card is built for that. They light a diya at their door, a row of wish diyas, colour a rangoli until your initials glow and open a letter from a red-and-gold liffafa. It holds up to six photos, works in any phone or laptop browser without an app or an account, and takes about five minutes to make.
If your poster was a green-Diwali pledge, the Capsule template suits the follow-up. Two people write sealed predictions about the coming year and open them together 12 months later to score each one.
When a poster is the wrong choice, and where SubhSandesh does not help
SubhSandesh is not a poster maker. The Happy Diwali page cannot be printed at A3, and the only image it saves is a 1080×1920 card, so it is no use for a competition entry or a notice board; paper and paint are right there.
A poster is also the wrong way to greet one person, and a grandparent would rather hear a voice on 29 October 2027. We have no Diwali usage data yet, since the Happy Diwali page is new, so nothing here claims how many people send one.
