- • Instagram keeps a 1080-pixel-wide photo uncropped between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so 1080 × 1440 is the tallest feed quote graphic (help centre, read 22 October 2026).
- • WCAG 2.2 asks for 4.5:1 contrast on text in images; saffron #FF9933 on white measures 2.13:1 and fails, maroon on cream measures 9.58:1.
- • The alt text for a quote image should be the quote itself, word for word, and the caption should repeat it as real text.
- • 48.3% of views of SubhSandesh's shared pages happen on a phone, so check every quote graphic on one at arm's length.
- • 20 original quotes here are grouped by fit: single line, two lines, three-slide carousel and Hindi with transliteration.

Diwali Quotes for Instagram, Laid Out to Read on a Phone
The Diwali quotes for Instagram that get read are short enough to sit large on a 1080 × 1440 pixel canvas, are set at a contrast of at least 4.5:1, and are repeated word for word in the alt text and caption. Below are 20 original quotes written to fit that method. Design for a phone: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone and 48.4% of views come from a touch device (measured 24 September 2026).
Canvas sizes, lettering, alt text and timing for Diwali 2027 (Friday 29 October) follow the quotes. The last section says when a graphic is the wrong format.
What makes a Diwali quote work as an Instagram graphic?
A Diwali quote graphic is an image of text: a festival line set over a colour or photo and posted as a picture. The W3C's Understanding document for WCAG 1.4.5, Images of Text, names the catch in one line: people cannot alter how text looks in images.
So the quote must be legible without zooming, and the same words must also exist as real text. That is why these 20 quotes are grouped by how much fits the frame, not by mood.
20 original Diwali quotes, sorted by how much fits the frame
Every line was written for this page. Each group gives a layout, a starting font size on a 1080-pixel-wide canvas and a margin, our working figures rather than an Instagram rule.
1. Under ten words, for a single-line graphic
Set one centred line on a plain background at about 90 to 110 px. Keep 100 px clear on every edge.
- Darkness never wins against one stubborn wick.
- Light the lamp you were waiting for.
- Tonight even the balcony has a halo.
- Every wick on this ledge was lit by hand.
- Same lamps as last year, brighter people around them.
2. Two lines, for a portrait feed post
Put the first line in the upper third of a 3:4 canvas and the second in the lower third, at about 64 to 80 px. Break exactly at the slash; a quote split mid-thought reads as two claims.
- We swept every corner for Lakshmi. / We left one lamp on for whoever gets home late.
- The oil runs out by morning. / The warmth lasts until next Kartik.
- Bring the old grudge to the doorstep. / Leave it where the rangoli ends.
- The moon took the night off. / We hung forty small ones along the railing.
- Not every light is loud. / Some just stay lit beside you all night.
3. Three beats, for a carousel
Each slash marks a new slide, one short line per slide at about 70 to 90 px. Keep every slide on the same canvas and margins so the text does not jump between swipes.
- Before the lamps, the cleaning. / Before the sweets, the queue at the halwai. / Before the night, all of us, home at last.
- The rangoli took four hours. / The dog crossed it in four seconds. / We kept the paw prints.
- Thirteen diyas along the boundary wall. / One kept going out. / Nani said that one is still learning.
- Dhanteras, something new. / Choti Diwali, something swept. / Lakshmi Puja, everything lit.
- Last Diwali you were a video call. / This year you are lighting the lamp next to mine.
4. Hindi lines, with transliteration and meaning
Devanagari carries matras above and below the headline, so give it about 10% more size than English. Keep the transliteration and meaning for the caption.
- दीया छोटा है, उजाला बड़ा। (Diya chhota hai, ujaala bada.) The lamp is small; its light is not.
- अमावस की रात, फिर भी कोई कोना अँधेरा नहीं। (Amaavas ki raat, phir bhi koi kona andhera nahin.) A moonless night, yet not one corner is dark.
- मिठाई बाँटो, हिसाब नहीं। (Mithai baanto, hisaab nahin.) Share the sweets, not the score.
- जो दूर हैं, उनके नाम का भी एक दीया। (Jo door hain, unke naam ka bhi ek diya.) One lamp, too, in the name of those far away.
- घर साफ़, मन हल्का, दरवाज़ा खुला। (Ghar saaf, man halka, darwaaza khula.) A clean house, a light heart, an open door.
The canvas sizes Instagram keeps uncropped, as of October 2026
Instagram's help page on image resolution, read on 22 October 2026, says a photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its original resolution when its aspect ratio sits between 1.91:1 and 3:4. At 1080 pixels wide that is a height of 566 to 1440 pixels; anything outside that range is cropped.
So the tallest feed graphic Instagram leaves alone is 1080 × 1440. Much advice still names 4:5 (1080 × 1350) as the limit; it posts uncropped too, but 3:4 gives a quote 90 more pixels.
A Story is a separate 1080 × 1920 canvas, the size SubhSandesh's Diwali card saves at. We keep a 250 px band clear at the top and bottom for the profile name and reply bar, our working margin rather than an Instagram figure.
How big and how dark should the words be?
WCAG 2.2, the W3C Recommendation dated 12 December 2024, asks for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for text and images of text, and 3:1 for large-scale text of at least 18 point or 14 point bold. It adds that extraordinarily thin strokes are harder to read at lower contrast, so avoid hairline scripts.
Festive palettes often fail. We measured common Diwali pairs with the WCAG formula: maroon #7A1F1F on cream #FFF6E5 is 9.58:1, gold #F2C14E on that maroon is 6.12:1, and white on near-black #1A1A1A is 17.40:1. Saffron #FF9933 on white is 2.13:1 and gold on cream is 1.56:1, so both fail even the 3:1 large-text floor.
Size matters as much as colour. A 2023 systematic review of 28 studies by Muhamad and Amali found users preferred high luminance contrast and positive polarity, meaning dark text on a light background, and favoured larger fonts on smartphones but smaller ones on desktops and laptops.
Even SubhSandesh's pages, which open in a browser rather than an app, get 48.3% of their views on a phone. Run three checks before posting.
- Hold your phone at arm's length; if you need to zoom, the type is too small.
- Run the two colours through a WCAG contrast checker; below 4.5:1, darken one of them.
- Use a heavier weight for the main line, with decorative lettering on one word at most.
Alt text and caption: putting the quote into words twice
The W3C's tutorial on images of text says the text alternative for an image of text must contain the same text presented in the image. Decorative effects such as stylised lettering or shadows are not described.
So the alt text is the quote itself, plus a phrase about the picture only when it adds something: "Light the lamp you were waiting for. Text over a single clay diya on a dark windowsill." Instagram lets you replace its automatic alt text with your own, before or after posting.
The WCAG 1.4.5 document adds that an image of text shown alongside the same words as real text meets the criterion. On Instagram that real text is your caption, so paste the quote as its first line, with any transliteration and meaning below.
Feed post, carousel, Story or a Diwali page: compared
The five formats differ in canvas, type size and where the words live as real text. Canvases come from Instagram's help page and SubhSandesh's template; type sizes are our working figures.
| Format | Canvas | Starting font size | Where the quote also exists as real text |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-line feed graphic | 1080 × 1440 px (3:4), uncropped | 90–110 px | Alt text and first caption line |
| Two-line portrait post | 1080 × 1440 px or 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) | 64–80 px | Alt text and first caption line |
| Carousel, one line per slide | 1080 × 1440 px on every slide | 70–90 px | Alt text per slide, full quote in caption |
| Story graphic | 1080 × 1920 px, 250 px bands kept clear | 80–100 px | None; Stories have no caption |
| SubhSandesh Diwali card | Ends on a card saved at 1080 × 1920 px | Set by the template | The whole page is browser text |
The takeaway: the 3:4 feed post gives a quote the most room Instagram allows without cropping. The caption then carries the words for everyone else.
When to post in 2027, and when a graphic is the wrong format
Diwali 2027 runs from Dhanteras on Wednesday 27 October to Bhai Dooj on Sunday 31 October, with Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October. Post cleaning and shopping quotes on the 27th or 28th, and lamp lines on the evening of the 29th.
Make the graphics early. SubhSandesh has no Diwali creation data yet, but in its Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, the nearest festival analogue and a small sample of n = 89 pages, 49.4% were built on the festival day itself.
A public quote graphic speaks to everyone who follows you, which makes it the wrong place for a line meant for one person. For a parent in another city or a partner away this year, SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card with wish diyas and a liffafa letter puts your words on a diya tag, a row of wish diyas and a letter in a shagun liffafa. It opens from a private link in any browser with no app or account, ending on a Shubh Deepavali card they can save at Story size.
It is a one-person greeting page, not a design tool, and a relative who rarely uses a smartphone is better served by the quote printed on a card in the mithai box. For a long quote, The Last Piece photo jigsaw reveals one line of your letter per piece placed; it is not a Diwali template, but it beats a crowded graphic.
