Diwali Shayari: 12 Original Couplets in Hindi, Roman and English
Diwali shayari works best as a single sher: two rhymed lines you can read in one glance on a phone. That matters because 48.3% of the pages people share on SubhSandesh are opened on a phone, and on Raksha Bandhan 2026, the nearest festival we hold data for (n = 89 pages, a rough analogue), 49.4% of greetings were built on the day itself. A couplet you can copy in ten seconds on 29 October 2027 beats a 12-line poem nobody finishes.
Below: 12 original sher in Devanagari, Roman and English, grouped by recipient, two public-domain couplets by Nazir Akbarabadi, and when a shayari is wrong.
What is a Diwali shayari, and what makes it a sher?
A sher is a two-line verse in Hindi–Urdu poetry, and a Diwali shayari is a sher about the festival. John T. Platts's 1884 dictionary defines sher as "poetry, verse; a verse, a couplet"; each line is a misra.
The ending makes it a sher. The qafiya is the rhyme, and the radif is the repeated word after it, which Platts calls "independent words placed after the rhyme at the end of hemistichs". In maaf rahen / saaf rahen below, maaf and saaf are the qafiya and rahen the radif.
In the India top 10 we checked on 22 October 2026, both news listicles printed mostly four-line verses instead. Those are closer to a qita than a sher.
12 original Diwali shayari, grouped by who receives them
Every line was written for this page. Diwali 2027 falls on Friday 29 October.
1. For parents
Use aap or Papa, and lean on memory, not prosperity. Send on 29 October, before the puja.
Maa ke haath ki baati ab bhi utni hi seedhi jalti hai, main kitna bhi door rahoon, Diwali usi aangan se chalti hai.
Mother's wick still burns straight; however far I live, Diwali starts from that courtyard.
Papa, is baar bhi chhat par pehli ladi aap hi lagaiyega, hum bas seedhi thaamenge, baaqi hunar aap hi dikhaiyega.
Papa, you hang the first string of lights on the roof again; we will only hold the ladder.
2. For a partner or spouse
Use tum, and let Urdu words like mashghool (busy) and qubool (accepted) carry the romance. Send late on 29 October.
Tumhaari hansi se pehle is ghar mein koi diya poora nahin jalta, rangoli bhi adhoori lagti hai jab tak tumhaara rang nahin milta.
Until you laugh, no diya here burns fully; even the rangoli waits for your colour.
Saara shahar aaj raushni ginne mein mashghool hai, mujhe to bas tumhaari aankhon ka ek diya qubool hai.
The city is busy counting its lights; the only diya I accept is the one in your eyes.
3. For friends
Use tum or tu, and joke. Send any time on 29 October.
Tere hisse ki kaju katli ab tak dibbe mein bachi hai, son papdi to har saal ki tarah aage badh chuki hai.
Your share of kaju katli is still in the box; the soan papdi, as every year, has been passed on.
Saal bhar ke jhagde aaj ki raat maaf rahen, diye ki lau ki tarah dosti ke iraade saaf rahen.
Let a year of quarrels be forgiven tonight; like a diya's flame, let our friendship stay clear.
4. For someone far away
For anyone in another city or country. The new moon falls at a different local hour abroad, which the first sher uses.
Tum jis shahar mein ho, wahaan amaavas bhi shaayad alag hogi, par jo diya main yahaan rakhoonga, uski lau tum tak bhi pahunchegi.
The new-moon night may differ in your city; the flame of the diya I place here will still reach you.
Ghar ki thaali mein is baar ek katori khaali rahegi, tere lautne tak har Diwali thodi savaali rahegi.
One bowl on the family thali stays empty; until you return, every Diwali asks a small question.
For one person far away, a sher alone is a thin gift. SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card on the happy-diwali page puts a line on each wish diya, seals a letter in a shagun liffafa and holds up to six photos, from a private link. For a partner you miss all year, the miss-you page with open-when letters fits better; 92.1% of its senders add at least one.
5. For a brother or sister, on Bhai Dooj
Use tu and tease. Bhai Dooj is Sunday 31 October 2027.
Bachpan mein mera anaar tu pehle jala deta tha, aaj bhi Bhai Dooj par aadhi mithaai tu hi le leta hai.
As kids you lit my anaar first; even now, on Bhai Dooj, you take half the sweets.
Didi, teri rangoli ke bina aangan ab bhi adhoora hai, tu sasuraal mein diya jalaaye, to yahaan ujaala poora hai.
Didi, without your rangoli the courtyard feels unfinished; when you light a diya at your in-laws', the light here is whole.
6. For a group or a mixed office
Name no single deity: the night is Lakshmi Puja for some, Mahavira's nirvana or Bandi Chhor Divas for others. Send on 28 October.
Koi Lakshmi pooje, koi Mahavir ka nirvaan manaaye, amaavas ki is raat har ghar apne dhang se diya jalaaye.
One home worships Lakshmi, another marks Mahavira's nirvana; tonight every home lights its diya its own way.
Saal bhar ki thakaan aaj darwaaze par hi utaar dena, kal phir milenge, aaj ki raat bas ghar ko de dena.
Leave the year's tiredness at the door; we meet again soon, so give tonight to home.
Nazir Akbarabadi's Diwali: two classical couplets to quote
Nazir Akbarabadi (1735–1830) wrote three Diwali poems in Agra, now public domain. Both lines are from the Nazir Granthavali (Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan, 1992), pp. 370–378, on archive.org; credit him by name.
Hamein adaayen Diwali ki zor bhaati hain, ki laakhon jhamken har ek ghar mein jagmagaati hain.
Diwali's ways delight me hugely, for lakhs of sparkles glitter in every house. (Nazir Akbarabadi, "Diwali-3")
Jidhar ko dekho udhar raushni ujaali hai, gharaz main kya kahoon, eent eent par Diwali hai.
Wherever you look the light is bright; what more can I say, there is Diwali on every brick. (Nazir Akbarabadi, "Diwali-3")
Nazir, a Muslim poet, wrote Diwali as a street festival of toy-sellers, batashe and lamps; stanzas on dice games are left out here. Many famous Diwali couplets online belong to 20th-century poets still in copyright.
Why the second line of a sher carries the weight
Put the wish, the name or the twist in the second line. A 2017 study in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience by Wassiliwizky and colleagues found that chills while listening to poetry cluster towards the end of lines, stanzas and whole poems, with reward-circuit activity rising just before those closing points.
The sample was 27 German speakers, so treat it as a principle, not proof for Hindi. Hide your second line; if the first already says everything, rewrite.
Devanagari, Roman or English: which version to send
Send Devanagari to daily Hindi readers, Roman to anyone who types Hindi in English letters, and English only alongside one of them. A 2023 ACL workshop paper by Nielsen, Kirov and Roark notes that Hindi and Urdu are both widely and informally romanized and that language-identification systems typically conflate them, so Roman shayari reaches both audiences. The table compares four formats against what we can measure.
| Format | How it is read | What lasts | SubhSandesh figure (24 Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp text | One message | The chat | 48.3% of page views are on a phone |
| Story image | One screen, 24 hours | The picture | Diwali card saves at 1080×1920 |
| Interactive page | A line per diya, plus a letter | A reopenable link | 11.1 views per created page |
| Printed card | By hand | The paper | Not measured |
A WhatsApp sher is read once; a page is viewed 11.1 times on average across all SubhSandesh page types. No Diwali figure exists yet.
When a shayari is the wrong Diwali message
A sher is wrong for an elder who reads only formal Hindi, where a plain shubh Deepavali does more. It is also wrong for a family in its first year of mourning.
SubhSandesh is the wrong tool for a group of 40: the Diwali page is built for one person. On Raksha Bandhan 2026, 49.4% of pages were built on the day, so keep the afternoon of 29 October free if you want one.
