Diwali Shayari for Friends: 12 Original Dosti Sher, Sorted by the Kind of Friend
Diwali shayari for friends works best when it names the kind of friend: the langotiya yaar, the jigri dost, the group chat, a new friend, the friend whose family is yours, and the friend in a hard year. Below are 12 original sher, two for each, in Devanagari with Roman and an English gloss, written for this page, not collected. Send them on Friday, 29 October 2027, Lakshmi Puja evening.
Keep each one to two lines. On SubhSandesh, 48.3% of the 57,456 recorded views of shared pages were on a phone (measured 24 September 2026), so the sher has to land on one small screen. People also write these late: on Raksha Bandhan 2026, our nearest festival analogue (n = 89 pages, not Diwali data), 49.4% of pages were built on the festival day itself.
Dost, yaar, jigri, langotiya: four words Platts (1884) keeps apart
Each Hindi-Urdu word for a friend sets a tone. John T. Platts' A Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi, and English (1884) defines dost as "a friend, one beloved" on page 534, and records the idiom dostī kā dam bharnā, "to make a boast of friendship", or to pretend it.
Yār, on page 1247, is looser: "a friend", also "companion, comrade". Its idioms range from yār-ě-ghār, "a companion in a cave", to yār-mār, "one who betrays his friend".
The closest two words are older images. Jigrī, on page 384, means "belonging to the liver or heart", then "intimate, close (friend)". Laṅgoṭiyā, on page 966, comes from laṅgoṭī, a loincloth, and means "an old friend (from childhood)".
12 original Diwali shayari for friends, by kind of friend
Each line runs 8 to 12 words. Copy both lines together; "ladka" can become "ladki" without breaking the rhyme.
1. Langotiya yaar: the friend from your shorts-wearing days
Use tu. This friend has seen every Diwali of yours, so the sher can be cheeky.
Nekar vaale dinon se jo mera haath thaame chal raha hai, vo yaar har Diwali mere ghar ka diya bankar jal raha hai.
The friend holding my hand since our days in shorts burns each Diwali as my home's lamp.
Maa ab bhi poochhti hai, "vo dubla-sa ladka kab aayega?" Ab tond hai, daadhi hai, par pehla laddoo to vahi khaayega.
Ma still asks when that skinny boy is coming; paunch and beard now, but the first laddoo is still his.
2. Jigri dost: the one person you write to properly
Drop the jokes here. Say the thing once.
Jigar ka tukda yoon hi nahin, tujhe jigri kehta hoon, diyon ki har lau mein tere hone ka shukr karta hoon.
I don't call you jigri, a piece of my heart, for nothing; in every diya's flame I give thanks for you.
Saari duniya ko "Happy Diwali" forward kar diya, tujhe likhne baitha to aadha ghanta soch mein beet gaya.
I forwarded "Happy Diwali" to the world; writing to you took half an hour of thinking.
3. Yaaron ki toli: the group chat that never makes a plan
Post these in the chat, not one-to-one. The point is that everyone laughs at once.
Group mein sau message, phir bhi kisi ne plan nahin banaaya, har baar ki tarah is baar bhi "chalo dekhte hain" hi aaya.
A hundred messages, no plan; as always, just "let's see".
Aadhi raat, nukkad ki tapri, aur paanch yaaron ki chai, itni raushan mehfil koi mahal bhi dikhaaye to dikhaaye.
Midnight, the corner tea stall, five friends' chai: let any palace show a brighter gathering, if it can.
4. Naya dost: a friend you made this year
A first Diwali as friends deserves marking. Use tum if you are still finding your register.
Saal bhar pehle tak tu bas ek anjaana naam tha, aaj meri Diwali ki list mein tera pehla maqaam tha.
A year ago you were a stranger's name; today, first on my Diwali list.
Nayi dosti hai, abhi saare qisse baaqi hain, ye pehli Diwali hai, abhi sau Diwaliyaan baaqi hain.
A new friendship, all its stories still to come; this is our first Diwali, and a hundred remain.
5. The friend whose family became yours
Some friends come with a second mother and kitchen. These thank the whole house.
Teri maa ki pooja ki thaali mein mera bhi naam aata hai, dosti ka rishta, dekh, kahaan tak ghar banaata hai.
My name comes up at your mother's puja thali too; see how far friendship goes in making a home.
Tere ghar ki ek chaabi barson se mere guchchhe mein hai, Diwali ho ya koi din, mera diya tere kamre mein hai.
A key to your house has sat on my keyring for years; Diwali or any day, my lamp is in your room.
6. A friend having a hard year
Loss or illness can make a bright festival feel loud. These offer company, not cheer.
Is saal teri jholi mein andhera kuchh zyaada aaya, to sun, is baar maine tere hisse ka diya bhi jalaaya.
This year more dark fell into your lap; so listen, this time I lit your share of the diyas too.
Tu kahe to raunaq nahin, bas chupchaap saath baithenge, raushni ki raat bhi hum teri raftaar se chalenge.
Say the word and we skip the fuss and just sit together; even on this night of lights, we go at your pace.
Why a shared memory beats a joke: Dunbar's 2,000-adult survey (2017)
A joke is the easy friend sher, but Robin Dunbar's 2017 paper in Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology suggests the joke is not what bonds. In a UK survey of 2,000 adults, laughter (at 67.9% of reported evening meals) and reminiscing (51.5%) had the strongest effects on feeling closer to dinner companions, while jokes alone had no significant effect (p = 0.174).
Dunbar concludes that "it seems to be the laughter itself, whatever it is triggered by, that creates the sense of bonding". The study covered British meals, not festival messages, so applying it here is our inference: pick a sher that makes a friend laugh at a shared memory.
Chung and colleagues, in Royal Society Open Science (2024), studied 112 strangers watching emotional videos in pairs. Intense emotion was linked to reciprocal prosocial attitudes, an effect that depended on joint attention to the same screen.
Which sher for which friend: a 5-row comparison
The 2027 days are verified dates. The timings are our suggestions, not a muhurat.
| Kind of friend | Word (Platts page) | Pronoun | Sher above | When to send in 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Childhood friend | langotiya yaar (p. 966) | tu | 1, the laddoo sher | Thu 28 Oct, Choti Diwali |
| Closest friend | jigri dost (p. 384) | tu or tum | 2, the half-hour sher | Fri 29 Oct, after the aarti |
| Group chat | yaar, plural yaaron (p. 1247) | tum log | 3, the "let's see" sher | Wed 27 Oct, Dhanteras |
| New friend | dost (p. 534) | tum | 4, the hundred Diwalis sher | Fri 29 Oct, early evening |
| Friend in a hard year | dost or yaar | tu | 6, the share-of-the-diyas sher | Fri 29 Oct, privately |
Sending it on 29 October 2027: group chat, one-to-one or a page
Group sher belong in the group, where everyone reads them at once, the joint-attention point from 2024. Jigri and hard-year sher belong one-to-one, ideally as a voice note, which nobody mistakes for a forward.
To make the sher something your friend opens, SubhSandesh's interactive Diwali card has a friend mode that changes the default wishes, blessing and reply. Put the sher in the letter inside the red-and-gold shagun liffafa and add up to six old photos to the sky lanterns; it takes about 5 minutes and opens in any browser.
Across the platform a shared page is viewed 11.1 times on average (measured 24 September 2026), so a sher placed there tends to be reread. For a langotiya yaar with a phone full of old photos, the photo jigsaw where each piece reveals a line of your letter is the other fit, but it is not a Diwali template.
When a shayari is the wrong Diwali message for a friend: 3 cases
Three situations call for plain words instead. A friend grieving someone this year may not want rhyme; two sentences naming the person they lost are kinder.
A friend you drifted from will read a polished couplet as a forward, so ask one plain question about their year. A friendly colleague is better served by a short English wish; jigri from a manager reads oddly.
SubhSandesh is also the wrong tool for a group of ten friends. The Diwali card is built for one person, with two names and one letter, so post the group sher in the chat.
