Six Hindi and Urdu words for a wife, checked in Platts (1884) and Wiktionary
We checked all six in John T. Platts' 1884 Dictionary of Urdu, Classical Hindi, and English or in Wiktionary. The meanings are sharper than most forwards assume.
- Lakshmi (लक्ष्मी). Platts (p. 959) says lakshmī-pūjā also means worship "by the bridegroom and bride after the bride has been brought to her father-in-law's house", and lists Lakshmi ghar mein aana, fortune coming home.
- Ardhangini (अर्धांगिनी). Wiktionary: अर्ध (half) + अंग (part) + the feminine -इनी: "better half, wife".
- Humsafar (हमसफ़र) and hamdam (हमदम). Platts (pp. 1233–34) gives ham-safar as "fellow-traveller" and ham-dam as "lit. 'breathing together'… a spouse".
- Shareek-e-hayat (शरीक-ए-हयात). Platts (p. 727) defines sharīk as "a sharer, participator… a partner"; with hayāt (life), it means partner of a life.
- Begum (बेगम). Platts (p. 210) gives "Lady; queen: a title of Mogal ladies", which suits teasing better than solemnity.
12 original Diwali shayari for wife and husband, one word at a time
Every sher was written for this page and checked against every earlier Diwali post here. Each block gives the couplet, Roman version and English gloss.
1. Lakshmi: for Lakshmi Puja night, Friday 29 October 2027
The first uses the idiom of Lakshmi staying. The second suits a first Diwali after the wedding.
पुरखे कहते थे लक्ष्मी घर में आती है तो रुकती है,
तुम्हें आए बारह बरस हुए, ये बात अब सच लगती है।
Purkhe kehte the Lakshmi ghar mein aati hai to rukti hai, / tumhein aaye baarah baras hue, ye baat ab sach lagti hai.
The elders said Lakshmi stays once she comes; twelve years on, I believe them.
इस बार पूजा की चौकी पर दो जोड़ी हाथ जुड़े,
जितने दीये जले, सब तुम्हारी ही ओर मुड़े।
Is baar pooja ki chauki par do jodi haath jude, / jitne diye jale, sab tumhari hi or mude.
Two pairs of hands folded at the altar this year; every diya turned towards you.
2. Ardhangini: for the wife who finishes your sentences
Half a body is also half of every conversation. Both suit any length of marriage.
लोग कहते हैं अर्धांगिनी, आधा अंग हो तुम मेरा,
मैं कहता हूँ इस दिवाली, पूरा रंग हो तुम मेरा।
Log kehte hain ardhangini, aadha ang ho tum mera, / main kehta hoon is Diwali, poora rang ho tum mera.
People call you half of my body; I say this Diwali you are the whole of my colour.
मेरी अर्धांगिनी आधी बात बिन कहे समझ जाती है,
बाक़ी आधी कहने को हर साल दिवाली की रात आती है।
Meri ardhangini aadhi baat bin kahe samajh jaati hai, / baaqi aadhi kehne ko har saal Diwali ki raat aati hai.
My other half grasps half of what I mean unsaid; Diwali night comes for the rest.
3. Humsafar: for a marriage of many Diwalis and many addresses
These suit couples who have moved cities. Both count the road, not the years.
कितनी दिवालियाँ बीतीं, कितने शहर, कितने किराए के घर,
हर नए आँगन में पहला दीया तुमने रखा, मेरी हमसफ़र।
Kitni Diwaliyan beetin, kitne shehar, kitne kiraaye ke ghar, / har naye aangan mein pehla diya tumne rakha, meri humsafar.
So many Diwalis, cities and rented homes; in each new courtyard you lit the first diya.
सफ़र में कई अमावसें आईं, कई रातें लंबी थीं,
हर बार हाथ थामने वाली उँगलियाँ तुम्हारी ही थीं।
Safar mein kai amaavasein aayin, kai raatein lambi thin, / har baar haath thaamne waali ungliyan tumhari hi thin.
The road had many moonless, long nights; each time, the fingers holding my hand were yours.
4. Shareek-e-hayat: for Padwa morning, Saturday 30 October 2027
Many Marathi homes keep Padwa as a day for husband and wife; in Gujarat it is the new year. The second sher is for the quiet morning.
ख़ुशी में शरीक तो सारा मोहल्ला हो जाता है,
जो ग़म में भी शरीक रहे, शरीक-ए-हयात कहलाता है।
Khushi mein shareek to saara mohalla ho jaata hai, / jo gham mein bhi shareek rahe, shareek-e-hayaat kehlaata hai.
The neighbourhood shares your joy; whoever shares your sorrow is your life's partner.
पड़वा की सुबह, कल की बची मिठाई, तुम्हारी चाय की प्याली,
शोर थम गया तो पता चला, यही थी मेरी असली दिवाली।
Padwa ki subah, kal ki bachi mithai, tumhari chai ki pyaali, / shor tham gaya to pata chala, yahi thi meri asli Diwali.
Padwa morning, leftover sweets, your tea; once the noise stopped, this was my real Diwali.
5. Begum: two playful sher for a wife who laughs first
"Lady; queen" makes begum a teasing word. Send these only if she enjoys that.
बेगम, आपके हुक्म पर आज हर लड़ी, हर दीया जलेगा,
बिजली का बिल जब आएगा, वो भी ये ग़ुलाम ही भरेगा।
Begum, aapke hukm par aaj har ladi, har diya jalega, / bijli ka bill jab aayega, wo bhi ye ghulaam hi bharega.
Begum, every light burns at your command tonight; this servant will pay the electricity bill too.
बेगम ने सामान की सूची दी, हमने रास्ते भर दोहराई,
दुकान पहुँचे तो उस सूची में बस उनकी मुस्कान याद आई।
Begum ne saamaan ki soochi di, humne raaste bhar dohraai, / dukaan pahunche to us soochi mein bas unki muskaan yaad aayi.
Begum gave me a shopping list; at the shop I remembered only her smile.
6. Hamdam: two sher from a wife to her husband
Hamdam means "breathing together", so it fits a husband too. The verbs are feminine, for a wife to send.
हमदम, आज की भीड़ में भी तुम्हारी आहट पहचानती हूँ,
सौ दीयों के बीच तुम्हारी लौ अलग से जानती हूँ।
Humdum, aaj ki bheed mein bhi tumhari aahat pehchaanti hoon, / sau diyon ke beech tumhari lau alag se jaanti hoon.
My hamdam, even in tonight's crowd I know your footsteps; among a hundred diyas I can tell your flame.
तुम्हारे बालों में चाँदी उतरी, मैंने धनतेरस का धन पाया,
जितनी दिवालियाँ साथ गिनीं, उतना ही ये रिश्ता सवाया।
Tumhare baalon mein chaandi utri, maine Dhanteras ka dhan paaya, / jitni Diwaliyan saath ginin, utna hi ye rishta savaaya.
Silver came into your hair, my Dhanteras wealth; each Diwali together made us a quarter richer.
Which sher for which marriage, 27–31 October 2027
The right word depends on your marriage and her humour. Figures are platform-wide (24 September 2026); no Diwali data exists yet, so Raksha Bandhan is our nearest festival.

What 340 Indian couples reported about showing affection (BMC Psychology, 2025)
If yours was an arranged marriage, the evidence is on your side. Kanth and Indumathy's 2025 validation of a Tamil Dyadic Adjustment Scale surveyed 340 married couples in India: 680 people, 65.15% in arranged marriages and 32.79% in love marriages.
Husbands scored 8.09 and wives 7.94 on affectional expression, not a significant difference (p = 0.71), and love and arranged marriages reported similar levels. The study measured marital adjustment, not poetry, so the licence to send a sher is our inference.
Sending it in SubhSandesh's Happy Diwali card, in "your love" mode
In WhatsApp, a sher drowns among forwards. SubhSandesh's Happy Diwali page gives it a setting: choose "your love" and the default wishes and blessing change to suit a partner. Put one misra on the tag of the diya at her door and the full couplet in the letter inside the shagun liffafa.
Add up to six photos to the sky lanterns and your initials to the rangoli; it takes about five minutes and opens in any browser, no app or account. Make an interactive Diwali card for your wife with the Happy Diwali template, with an optional password if in-laws share her phone.
For a love note without festival props, try the Darling romantic page, a dark, dramatic page for a partner (457 made by 24 September 2026). It is not a Diwali template, so the sher carries the festival alone.
When Lakshmi or begum is the wrong word: 3 cases
Not every word suits every wife, and a link is not always right. Here are three cases, one against our own product.
- She does not want to be the household goddess. Lakshmi can read as praise for running the home: a job, not a compliment. Send the humsafar lines instead.
- Your home does not keep Lakshmi Puja. For Jain, Sikh or interfaith couples, 29 October 2027 may mean Mahavira's nirvana or Bandi Chhor Divas. The humsafar lines carry no ritual.
- She is in the same room. If you are both home, a handwritten sher tucked into her mithai box beats any link, ours included.
