- • A two-line sher is about 20 words; the median letter on SubhSandesh's miss-you page is 88 words (n = 214), so use the sher as an opening.
- • Only 13.6% of miss-you senders record a voice note, yet a sher is written to be heard; reciting it is the most fitting add-on.
- • A 2026 study of Nepalese left-behind families named festival seasons among the times a migrant's absence is felt hardest.
- • Diwali 2027 is Friday 29 October; send a partner's sher after the puja and a parent's sher an hour before you call.
- • Do not send a distance shayari to someone who has died or to a recent ex; write your own words or send a plain Happy Diwali.

Diwali Shayari Miss You: Lines for a Partner, Parents and Friends Far Away
Diwali shayari miss you lines work best as one two-line sher of about 20 words, followed by a few lines of your own. On SubhSandesh's "I miss you" page, the median letter senders write is 88 words, and 13.6% of them also record a voice note (214 pages, July to September 2026, so not Diwali data). Treat each sher below as the opening of your message, not the whole of it.
Below are 10 original miss-you shayari for Diwali 2027 (Friday 29 October) in Devanagari, Roman Hindi and English. They are grouped by who is far away, from a partner to parents to an old friend.
Why missing someone peaks at Diwali, per two studies from 2025 and 2026
In a 2026 PLOS Global Public Health study of families left behind by Nepalese labour migrants (18 interviews and two focus groups in Chitwan), participants named festival seasons alongside sickness, childbirth and weddings as the times the absence was hardest. The same families said calls helped: one woman described speaking "all my heart's feelings on the phone" whenever she missed her husband.
The parents' side is measurable too. A 2025 BMC Geriatrics survey in Koch Bihar, West Bengal, compared 250 parents of migrant sons with 250 parents of non-migrants and found that around 18% of parents with migrant sons rated their health as poor, with higher loneliness scores. A shayari fixes none of that, but it gives a parent a line to reread after the call ends.
10 original miss-you shayari for Diwali, by who is far away
Each sher ends on a repeated word (the radif) with a rhyme just before it. Swap maa and papa, tum and aap, or the verb's gender to fit the two of you; the English line is a gloss, not a translation to send alone.
For a partner in another city or country
Use tum. Send late on 29 October, after the puja, when the house goes quiet.
I lit every diya on the parapet with my own hands; all the light went to the city where you were smiling.
Video call par tumne phuljhadi dikhaayi to hans diye hum, screen ki us chingaari se hi is baar raushan hue hum.
You held a sparkler up to the video call and I laughed; this year, that spark on a screen was all my light.
Lakshmi ji se is baar koi dhan nahin maanga maine, bas agli Diwali ka ek ticket tumhaare naam maanga maine.
This year I asked Lakshmi for no wealth at all, only one ticket home in your name before next Diwali.
For parents back home
Use aap or tum as you do at home. The second sher is practical on purpose: the Koch Bihar study found less caregiving support for parents of migrant sons.
Maa, is baar darwaaze par toran tum akele hi taangogi, par har diye ki lau mein tum meri hi zid pehchaanogi.
Ma, this year you will hang the toran on the door alone, but in every diya's flame you will recognise my stubbornness.
Papa, pataakhon ka budget is baar aap bacha lena, jo paise bachein unse apni dawa samay par manga lena.
Papa, save the cracker budget this year; with what is saved, order your medicines on time.
From parents to a child who could not come
For a student in a hostel or a son or daughter working abroad. Use tu or tum, whichever you use at the dinner table.
Tere kamre ki khidki par bhi humne ek diya rakha hai, ghar ne teri jagah ko aaj bhi waise hi saja rakha hai.
We put a diya on your bedroom window too; the house has kept your place decorated just as it always was.
Phone par teri awaaz aayi to pooja poori lagi beta, warna aarti ki thaali bhi aaj adhoori lagi beta.
When your voice came on the phone the puja felt complete, beta; until then, even the aarti plate felt unfinished.
For a friend you used to celebrate with
A friend in another city misses the noise more than the ritual. Write about that.
Hostel ki chhat se jo rocket humne saath udaaye the, unki awaaz se zyaada tere thahaake yaad aaye the.
Of the rockets we sent up together from the hostel roof, I remembered your laughter more than their bang.
Diwali without you: the first year apart
For the first Diwali after someone moved away for study, work or marriage. These are not for someone who has died; that case is covered in the last section.
Is saal Diwali ki tasveeron mein ek chehra kam hai, khushiyaan poori hain, bas muskaan thodi nam hai.
This year one face is missing from the Diwali photos; the happiness is whole, only the smiles are a little damp.
Tumhaare bina bhi ghar mein sab rasmein nibhaai gayin, bas tumhaari pasand ki gujhiya is baar nahin banaai gayi.
Every ritual was kept at home without you; only your favourite gujiya was not made this year.
A sher can also sit inside something they open rather than scroll past. SubhSandesh's Diwali card with wish diyas and a letter in a shagun liffafa has a mode for your love, family or a friend, puts a wish on each diya and holds up to six photos in sky lanterns. It opens from a private link in any browser, with no app or account, and takes about five minutes to set up.
Firāq, judāī, yaad: three words for the same ache
John T. Platts's 1884 dictionary defines firāq as "separation, disunion" and also as "anxiety, grief, regret (on account of absence)", so it carries the pain as well as the distance. The same dictionary gives judāī as "separation, parting; absence", the plainer everyday word, while yaad simply means remembering.
For Diwali, yaad is usually the safest choice: teri yaad aayi says you were missed without making a festival night heavy. Save firāq for a partner who reads Urdu poetry; it is a word for the 3 a.m. message, not the 7 p.m. one.
Saying it plainly: what a 442-person long-distance study found
A 2025 PLOS Mental Health study of 442 adults in Iran, 215 of them in long-distance relationships, found that ambivalence about expressing negative emotions was linked with more physical symptoms in both long-distance and close couples. The long-distance group also reported significantly more somatic symptoms overall. It is a correlation in one convenience sample, not proof that a sher makes anyone healthier.
Still, holding back is not neutral, and many people hesitate to say "I miss you" outright on a happy night. In a sher, the form does part of the talking.
What to send with the sher, with figures from 214 miss-you pages
A sher is about 20 words; the median letter on SubhSandesh's miss-you page is 88. The table shows what senders on that page add. The 214 pages were built between 28 July and 25 September 2026, before any Diwali, so they describe the page, not the festival.
| Add-on | Why it suits a Diwali miss-you message | /missyou-gf senders who use it (n = 214) |
|---|---|---|
| "Open when" letters | One for Diwali night, one for the morning after | 92.1% add at least one, 3.2 on average |
| Written memories | Last Diwali together, in a line or two | 86.4% add at least one, 4.5 on average |
| Password on the page | Keeps a private sher private | 43.5%, against 38.5% platform-wide |
| Reunion date countdown | Turns "next Diwali" into an actual date | 28.0% set one |
| Voice note | You reciting the sher in your own voice | 13.6% record one |
The voice note is the least used and, for shayari, arguably the most fitting: a sher is written to be heard, and a parent can replay a voice after the call ends. If you miss a partner and the distance lasts well beyond one festival, SubhSandesh's I miss you page with open-when letters and a reunion countdown fits better than a Diwali card, because it covers the months either side of 29 October.
When a miss-you shayari is the wrong Diwali message: 3 cases
If the person has died, a shayari written for distance reads as careless; write in your own words, or light a diya for them and send nothing. If a relationship ended recently, "I miss you" on a festival night pressures someone who chose the distance, and a plain "Happy Diwali" respects that. If the separation is someone else's hardship, such as a parent on a Gulf contract like those in the Nepal study, a sher about your loneliness can land as guilt, so lead with them.
SubhSandesh also loses to a phone call; the Nepal families credited calls with easing the longing. Send the sher an hour before you ring, so the call starts somewhere warmer than "network weak hai".
