- • 30 easy Halloween costumes split into five time tiers: 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes, plus already-own outfits from sports kit, work uniform or pyjamas.
- • 10 dollar-store and pharmacy items, an estimated $22–45 in total, complete 20 of the 30 costumes; the face-paint palette alone covers 6.
- • Allergic contact dermatitis usually appears 24–72 hours after contact (DermNet), so new face paint needs testing days before Halloween, not the same evening.
- • A 2010 meta-analysis of 50 choice-overload experiments (N = 5,036) found a mean effect of virtually zero, which is why this list is sorted by time rather than cut short.

Easy Halloween Costumes for Whatever Time You Have Left
Easy Halloween costumes are those you can finish before you have to leave, so this page sorts 30 of them by minutes to ready: 5, 15, 30, 60, or already in your wardrobe. Each lists what you need, where it comes from (closet, pharmacy or dollar store), an estimated cost and how readily people recognise it.
Time is the honest measure because most people decide late. No Halloween data exists on our side, so the nearest analogue is Raksha Bandhan, when the median SubhSandesh rakhi page was made 0 days ahead and 49.4% of 89 were made on Raksha Bandhan itself. Phones also account for 48.3% of all views of pages shared from SubhSandesh, so a costume must work as a thumbnail-sized photo.
You will also find a 10-item shopping list that covers 20 costumes. Then comes the face-paint check that has to happen days ahead.
How do you define an easy Halloween costume?
An easy Halloween costume is one built mostly from things you already own, ready in under an hour, with no sewing and no special tools. The test is minutes to ready, not how simple the idea sounds.
We sort by time, not by trimming the list. A meta-analysis of 50 choice-overload experiments (Scheibehenne et al., 2010, N = 5,036) found a mean effect of virtually zero, so fewer ideas would not reliably help you choose.
The clock does matter. In four studies on deadline pressure (Nature Communications, July 2026), Pisauro and colleagues modelled motivation as work remaining divided by time remaining; pressure shifted people from avoiding effort to seeking progress. Pick your tier by that ratio, then the idea inside it.
30 easy Halloween costumes, grouped by minutes to ready
Each idea gives four fields: what you need, where it comes from, estimated cost (our US dollar-store and pharmacy estimates) and recognisability. High means most people name it from a phone photo with no caption; medium needs a second look or a pose.
1. 5 minutes: one accessory or prop (6 ideas)
Each is one bought or found piece on clothes you already wear. Use this tier when the party starts within the hour.
- Black cat: black clothes, cat-ear headband. Closet, dollar store. Est. $1–2. High.
- Devil: red or black outfit, horned headband. Closet, dollar store. Est. $1–3. High.
- Angel: all-white clothes, halo headband. Closet, dollar store. Est. $1–3. High.
- Witch: dark dress or black jeans, pointed hat, kitchen broom. Closet, dollar store. Est. $1–5. High.
- Pilot: aviator sunglasses, white shirt, toy wings pinned above the pocket. Closet, dollar store. Est. $1–3. Medium.
- Rosie the Riveter: denim shirt, rolled sleeves, red bandana knotted on top. Closet, dollar store. Est. $1–2. Medium.
2. 15 minutes: face paint plus one item (7 ideas)
Each pairs a painted face with one garment or prop. The 15 minutes assumes paint you have already tested (see the safety section).
- Panda: white base, black eye patches and nose, black-and-white clothes. Closet, dollar store. Est. $5–10. Medium.
- Zombie: grey-green base, dark under-eyes, an old shirt you can tear. Closet, dollar store. Est. $5–10. High.
- Cyborg: silver on half the face with drawn circuit lines, grey hoodie. Closet, dollar store. Est. $5–10. Medium.
- Frankenstein's monster: green face, drawn forehead stitches, a blazer one size too small. Closet, dollar store. Est. $5–10. High.
- Tiger: orange base, black stripes, orange top, the cat ears from tier 1. Closet, dollar store. Est. $6–12. Medium.
- Jack-o'-lantern: orange face, black triangle eyes, jagged grin, orange top. Closet, dollar store. Est. $5–10. Medium.
- Friendly clown: white base, rosy cheeks, foam red nose, your brightest mismatched clothes. Closet, dollar store. Est. $6–11. High.
3. 30 minutes: one cheap purchase plus your closet (6 ideas)
Each needs one shop run for a single item. Budget 15 minutes for the trip and 15 to dress.
- Mummy: a pair of crepe bandage rolls wrapped over a white base layer, ends tucked. Pharmacy, closet. Est. $6–12. High.
- 1920s flapper: feathered headband, black dress, long beads. Dollar store, closet. Est. $3–6. Medium.
- Cowboy or cowgirl: cheap hat, jeans, boots, bandana at the neck. Dollar store, closet. Est. $3–8. High.
- Bumblebee: antennae headband, yellow top, three black felt stripes glued across it. Dollar store, closet. Est. $3–5. High.
- 1970s hippie: round tinted glasses, headband worn low, wide-leg denim. Dollar store, closet. Est. $2–4. Medium.
- Doctor: toy stethoscope, white shirt or coat, clipboard. Dollar store, closet. Est. $1–3. Medium.
4. 1 hour: simple no-sew (6 ideas)
These use scissors, knots, safety pins or fabric glue, never a needle. Glue needs drying time, so start before you shower.
- Sheet ghost: old white flat sheet, two large eye holes cut at your eye line. Closet. Est. $0. High.
- Bag of jelly beans: clear bag with leg holes, 25 to 30 small balloons, ribbon at the neck. Dollar store. Est. $3–5. Medium.
- Ballerina: 2 to 3 metres of tulle knotted in strips onto an elastic waistband, over leggings. Dollar store, closet. Est. $5–8. Medium.
- Dalmatian: white top and trousers with black felt spots glued on. Closet, dollar store. Est. $3–5. High.
- Sunflower: yellow felt petals glued round the brim of a cap, green top. Closet, dollar store. Est. $3–5. Medium.
- Pumpkin: orange top with a black felt face glued on. Closet, dollar store. Est. $3–5. Medium.
5. Already own it: sports kit, work uniform, pyjamas (5 ideas)
These need no purchase because the costume is clothing you wear for something else. One detail turns a normal outfit into a character.
- Star player: your team's jersey, two smudges of eye black. Sports kit. Est. $0. Medium.
- Marathon finisher: running kit, paper bib reading 26.2 pinned at four corners. Sports kit. Est. $0. Medium.
- Chef: work whites or an apron, wooden spoon, paper toque. Work uniform. Est. $0. High.
- Barista: work apron, name badge, a paper cup with your name misspelt. Work uniform. Est. $0. Medium.
- Ebenezer Scrooge: long pyjama top as a nightshirt, beanie as a nightcap, battery tea light. Pyjamas. Est. $0–2. Medium (Dickens, 1843).
Easy costumes compared: minutes, cost and recognisability
Here is the most recognisable idea from each tier. Costs are our estimates.
| Minutes | Idea | Est. cost | Recognisability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Witch | $1–5 | High |
| 15 | Frankenstein's monster | $5–10 | High |
| 30 | Mummy | $6–12 | High |
| 60 | Sheet ghost | $0 | High |
| Already own | Chef | $0 | High |
Recognisability does not rise with minutes: the 5-minute witch reads as fast as the 1-hour ghost. Extra time buys a less common costume, not a clearer one.
The last-minute shopping list: 10 items, 20 costumes
Buy pieces that serve several costumes. These 10 items, all from a dollar store except the pharmacy bandage, cost an estimated $22–45 and complete 20 of the 30 ideas.
| Item | Est. cost | Costumes it completes |
|---|---|---|
| Face-paint palette | $5–10 | Panda, zombie, cyborg, Frankenstein's monster, tiger, jack-o'-lantern |
| Felt sheets and fabric glue | $3–5 | Pumpkin, Dalmatian spots, sunflower petals, bumblebee stripes |
| Plain headband and pipe cleaners | $2–3 | Devil horns, angel halo, bumblebee antennae |
| Red bandana | $1–2 | Rosie the Riveter, cowboy |
| Cat-ear headband | $1–2 | Black cat, tiger |
| Crepe bandage, 2 rolls (pharmacy) | $6–12 | Mummy |
| Pointed hat | $1–5 | Witch |
| Round tinted glasses | $1–2 | Hippie |
| Toy stethoscope | $1–3 | Doctor |
| Foam red nose | $1 | Friendly clown |
The palette alone covers 6 costumes, so buy it first. The tiger and the bumblebee each draw on two items, so the rows total 22 uses but 20 distinct costumes.
Face-paint safety: test 3 days ahead, not 3 minutes
A face-paint costume is only a 15-minute costume if you tested the paint earlier in the week. DermNet’s page on allergic contact dermatitis says the rash usually appears 24 to 72 hours after contact, so a dab on your wrist at 6 p.m. tells you nothing by 7.
DermNet's open application test puts the product on the inner upper arm several times a day over several days. Otherwise use a paint you have worn before, or drop to the 5-minute tier.
Colour matters too. FDA guidance on novelty makeup says colour additives in face paint must be FDA-approved, a colour approved for skin may not be approved near the eyes, and none of the eight approved fluorescent colours may go near them.
In a 2022 test of 95 face paints and pancake makeups from shops in Brazil's largest city, Salles and colleagues found potentially toxic elements, with children's estimated risk highest through accidental ingestion. Keep paint off lips and hands.
Turning your costume photo into a one-person Halloween greeting
If someone missed your costume, our interactive Halloween card has space for six photos, and your letter sits in a darkened attic until they find it by flashlight. No app is needed; it works in any browser on a phone or laptop.
Its closing Boo License names a costume you choose for them from eight classics (black cat, bat, mummy, ghost, pumpkin, skeleton, vampire or witch), and five of those eight appear above. Modes cover a partner, best friend, family or kids, and 90.9% of pages people start on SubhSandesh end up published. The premium Halloween page goes further, with recorded audio (60 seconds maximum) and room for 12 photos.
When to skip an easy costume or our page
Easy has limits, and so does a link. Something else wins here.
- Costume contests: a 5-minute witch rarely beats a 6-hour build.
- Eczema-prone skin: skip the 15-minute tier; reactions take 24–72 hours to show.
- Trick-or-treating after dark: sheets and bandages limit side vision; the FDA notes face paint lets you see better than a mask.
- A party crowd: our page greets one person, rather than inviting a room.
- The same room: if you see them on 31 October, just show the photo.
