- • Give the theme to one 'carrier' costume, so the toddler, the pet or the teen can opt out without breaking the family photo.
- • Babies under 4 months are most at risk of asphyxia in carriers (BMJ Paediatrics Open review of 62 papers, 2026): costume the parent, never the baby's face.
- • The ASPCA advises no pet costume unless the pet loves it; PDSA lists lip licking, yawning and panting as dog stress signs.
- • In a 2025 survey of 755 adolescents, family rituals supported well-being but could also constrain it, so give teens a loose rule, not a matching outfit.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views happen on a phone, so relatives who can't be there will see your costume photos on a small screen.

Family Halloween Costumes for Every Family Shape, Bump to Grandma
Family Halloween costumes work when one person carries the theme, so everyone else wears something simple, and when chosen around the hardest member: the baby in a carrier, the dog, the teenager or the grandparent at the door. Below are 24 sets across nine family shapes, each with roles, the theme-carrying costume, an estimated cost and a toddler rating.
Decide early. In SubhSandesh's nearest festival data, Raksha Bandhan 2026 (n = 89 pages, a different festival used only as an analogue), 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself, and a bump costume or a pet try-on cannot wait that long. When a relative can't be there, the photo travels by link, and 48.3% of the 57,456 recorded views of SubhSandesh pages happen on a phone.
What makes a family Halloween costume different from a group costume?
A family Halloween costume is a shared theme built around one household's limits: a baby who must stay visible in a carrier, a toddler who refuses a mask, a pet who may refuse everything. Friends can drop a reluctant member; a family takes everyone along on 31 October.
So every set names a carrier, the one costume that tells neighbours the theme. If the toddler's outfit comes off at 6 pm, the carrier keeps the photo readable.

Costs are my household estimates in US dollars, assuming plain basics are owned. "Toddlers: yes" means a two- or three-year-old can wear it maskless, walk in it and get out of it fast.
1. Parents and a baby in a carrier
Dress the carrying parent, never the baby's face. Keep the baby's layers light, since your body heat counts as one.
- Bird's nest: nest (carrying parent), fluffy-hatted hatchling, birdwatcher. Carrier: a leafy brown jacket. Est. US$20–35. Toddlers: yes.
- Ice cream van: cone (parent in a criss-cross apron), scoop (baby in a sprinkle beanie), driver. Carrier: the beanie. Est. US$15–25. Toddlers: yes.
- Special delivery: courier, parcel (baby with a stamp sticker), signer. Carrier: the courier's satchel. Est. US$10–20. Toddlers: yes.
2. Parents and a toddler
Toddlers tire and want carrying, so pick costumes that read on your hip. Hoodies beat foam suits.
- Building site: digger (yellow hoodie, toy hard hat), foreman, traffic controller. Carrier: hi-vis vests, which add visibility. Est. US$25–40. Toddlers: yes.
- Ladybird garden: spotted red hoodie, gardener, sunflower headband. Carrier: the hoodie. Est. US$15–30. Toddlers: yes.
- Bedtime: sleepy bear in pyjamas, glow-in-the-dark moon, star. Carrier: the moon. Est. US$15–25. Toddlers: yes, even asleep.
3. A family with a pregnant parent
Let the bump carry the theme. Keep the pregnant parent in soft layers and flat shoes, nothing tight across the belly.
- Pirate treasure: captain, crew, and the treasure: a gold X over the bump. Carrier: the X. Est. US$20–35. Toddlers: yes, with a hat, not an eye patch.
- Fortune teller: crystal ball (bump in a purple swirl top), fortune teller, kids as tarot cards. Carrier: the swirl top. Est. US$20–30. Toddlers: yes.
- Ringed planet: planet (felt ring round the bump), astronaut, kids as moons. Carrier: the ring. Est. US$15–30. Toddlers: yes.
4. A family with a dog or cat
Build a theme that survives the pet refusing, because many will. A bandana is the pet's part; the full outfit is a human job.
- Fire station: fire chief, crew in red, station dog in a red bandana. Carrier: the chief's coat. Est. US$30–50. Toddlers: yes.
- Witch and familiar: witch, apprentices, and a black cat who wears nothing and is the familiar anyway. Carrier: the hat and broom. Est. US$20–35. Toddlers: yes.
- Detective agency: lead detective, juniors with magnifying glasses, sniffer dog wearing a K9 collar tag. Carrier: the long coat. Est. US$20–40. Toddlers: yes.
5. A single parent with kids
One adult does all the steering, so choose a theme where kids follow you by design. Each needs one adult costume.
- Tour group: guide with a flag on a pole, tourists with paper cameras. Carrier: the flag, easy to spot. Est. US$10–20. Toddlers: yes.
- Goose and goslings: goose with an orange beak cap, goslings in yellow walking in a line. Carrier: the cap. Est. US$15–25. Toddlers: yes.
6. Three generations with grandparents
Grandparents often take the doorstep shift, so give them a seated role. Avoid masks and wigs that fight glasses or hearing aids.
- Portrait gallery: grandparents as portraits behind an empty frame, kids as visitors, a guard. Carrier: the frame. Est. US$10–25. Toddlers: yes.
- Royal court: king and queen on porch-chair thrones, knights, jesters. Carrier: the crowns. Est. US$20–40. Toddlers: yes.
- Retro diner: grandparents as diner owners handing out sweets, kids as milkshake and fries. Carrier: the aprons. Est. US$20–35. Toddlers: yes.
7. A big family of five or six
With five or six people the problem is fairness. These give every child a named part.
- Weather forecast: presenter with a map, sun, cloud, raindrop, lightning bolt, rainbow. Carrier: the map. Est. US$30–50. Toddlers: yes.
- Village bakery: baker in a tall hat, cupcake, croissant, doughnut, baguette. Carrier: the hat. Est. US$30–50. Toddlers: yes.
8. A blended family
Step-siblings may barely know each other, and some kids spend 31 October at the other home. Pick equal parts with no lead child.
- Rock band: singer, drummer, guitarists, roadie, in T-shirts naming a band the kids invent. Carrier: the T-shirt. Est. US$30–50. Toddlers: yes.
- Superhero league: one hero each in same-colour capes, each with their own initial. Carrier: the capes. Est. US$25–45. Toddlers: yes, with short capes.
9. Teens who don't want to match
In a 2025 survey of 755 adolescents aged 14 to 18, family ritual communication raised well-being through family intimacy and resilience, but could also constrain it through intergenerational power dynamics (Zhibin et al., Frontiers in Psychology, 2025). So invite, don't conscript, and loosen the theme until the teen picks their own costume.
- One colour rule: any costume in black with one orange item. Carrier: a jack-o'-lantern top. Est. US$0–20. Toddlers: yes.
- One decade rule: anyone from the 1980s, and the teen chooses first. Carrier: a parent's shoulder-padded jacket. Est. US$15–30. Toddlers: yes.
- Film crew: the teen directs with a clapperboard, filming the family as monsters. Carrier: the clapperboard. Est. US$10–20. Toddlers: yes.
Babies, toddlers and pets: the safety rules that change the costume
A 2026 systematic review of 62 papers in BMJ Paediatrics Open found sling and carrier deaths are infrequent but mainly linked to asphyxia, with babies under 4 months most at risk because a heavy head can fall chin to chest (Lovell-Kennedy et al., 2026). It recommends a visible face, an airway clear of fabric and an upright baby, so no hood, cape or prop goes over the carrier opening.
The UK's TICKS checklist includes keeping the face "in view" and "close enough to kiss", yet 25% of 1,470 UK carrier users surveyed in 2026 were unfamiliar with UK guidance (BMJ Paediatrics Open, 2026). The review notes TICKS came from the sling industry without underpinning evidence, so use it as a minimum.
For toddlers, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests non-toxic make-up or a hat instead of a mask, hats that cannot slide over the eyes, short hems and reflective tape (AAP Halloween safety tips). It adds that child pedestrian injuries are more likely on Halloween than any other night.
The ASPCA advises against costuming a dog or cat unless you know it loves it; an outfit must not limit movement, sight, breathing, or barking and meowing (ASPCA Halloween safety tips). The vet charity PDSA lists the stress signs to watch at the try-on (PDSA, 11 October 2022).
- Dogs: lip licking, yawning or panting.
- Cats: heavy self-grooming, aggression, or more noise than usual.
- Both: overheating, as clothes can block temperature control.
The hardest role in each family costume, and the fix
Family costumes usually fail on one person, not the idea. Here are five shapes, that person and the fix.
| Family shape | Theme example | Est. cost (US$) | Hardest role to fill | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parents + baby under 4 months | Bird's nest | 20–35 | The baby, whose face must stay uncovered | Costume the carrying parent; baby gets a hat only |
| Pregnant parent | Pirate treasure | 20–35 | The bump-wearer after two hours standing | The doorstep chair or a seated photo |
| Family + dog | Fire station | 30–50 | The station dog | The chief's coat carries it; bandana or nothing |
| Grandparents | Portrait gallery | 10–25 | Grandparent with glasses or limited mobility | A seated role behind a frame; no masks or wigs |
| Teens 14–18 | Film crew | 10–20 | The teen who refuses to match | A behind-the-camera role they choose |
Every fix moves the theme onto someone who can carry it. None needs a bigger budget.
Sending the family costume to relatives who can't be there
A grandparent in another city meets the costumes on a screen: 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views are on a phone, and each created page averages 11.1 recorded views. The interactive Halloween card has a family mode that changes its last question to "Will you be my favourite little pumpkin?".
Load the costume shots (six photos at most), write a letter and choose the word they carve into the pumpkin. Grandma knocks three times, clears foggy portraits to reveal each costume and finds your letter under a flashlight beam. It greets one person, not a crowd, in any phone or laptop browser.
If they would rather hear the grandchildren, the premium Halloween page holds a 60-second voice note and 12 photos. Its family mode drops the No button entirely.
When matching family costumes are a bad idea
Skip the matching set when the baby is under 4 months and the carrier is new to you, when a pet shows stress at the try-on, or when a teen has said no twice. A video call or a printed photo beats any link for a grandparent without a smartphone, and SubhSandesh's pages are English-only and sell no costumes.
