Ganesh Chaturthi Wishes in Tamil, Sent as Vinayagar Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi wishes in Tamil are usually not written as "Ganesh Chaturthi" at all. In Tamil the day is விநாயகர் சதுர்த்தி (Vinayagar Chaturthi) or பிள்ளையார் சதுர்த்தி (Pillaiyar Chaturthi), and the greeting word is வாழ்த்துக்கள் (vazhthukkal), so the standard line reads இனிய விநாயகர் சதுர்த்தி நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள்.

The date is Monday 14 September 2026. Drik Panchang's Chennai listing puts the Madhyahna puja muhurat at 10:51 AM to 1:18 PM, and Ganesha visarjan on Friday 25 September.

Nine wishes follow in Tamil script, each with a transliteration and an English meaning, plus the three choices behind them: the name, the word for "obstacle", and literary Tamil or spoken.

Vinayagar Chaturthi, Pillaiyar Chaturthi, and what vazhthukkal means

Tamil has three names for the day and they are not interchangeable. The University of Madras Tamil Lexicon carries பிள்ளையார்சதுர்த்தி as its own headword — "a festival in honour of Gaṇēša" — cross-referred to விநாயகசதுர்த்தி, with a third form, பிள்ளையார்சவுதி, marked as local.

பிள்ளையார் piḷḷaiyār is glossed first as மகன், "son", and only then as Ganesha. That is the warm, domestic name — the child of the house. விநாயகர் is the formal one, and கணேஷ் is what you write when you are writing Hindi or English in Tamil letters.

The greeting word matters as much as the name. The Tamil Lexicon defines வாழ்த்து as "benediction, felicitation", its third sense being "invocation or praise of the deity at the beginning of a religious or literary work".

So வாழ்த்துக்கள் is not a casual "wishes". It is a blessing pronounced over someone, and its dictionary sense is literally the thing said before beginning — which on Vinayagar Chaturthi is exactly right.

Nine Vinayagar Chaturthi vazhthukkal in Tamil, with transliteration and meaning

Ordered from safest to most specific, with the Tamil, a transliteration you can read aloud, and what it says.

1. The plain one, safe for anybody

இனிய விநாயகர் சதுர்த்தி நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள்! Iniya Vinayagar Chaturthi nalvazhthukkal! "Sweet Vinayagar Chaturthi good wishes." The default, safe for a boss or a WhatsApp group.

2. The Pillaiyar version, for an older relative

பிள்ளையார் சதுர்த்தி வாழ்த்துக்கள்! அவர் அருள் உங்கள் குடும்பத்திற்குத் துணையாக இருக்கட்டும். Pillaiyar Chaturthi vazhthukkal! Avar arul ungal kudumbaththirku thunaiyaaga irukkattum. "Pillaiyar Chaturthi greetings. May his grace stand by your family." Older households say Pillaiyar far more often than Vinayagar, and an elder hears the difference.

3. The obstacle line, in native Tamil

இடையூறுகள் யாவும் அகலட்டும்; நீங்கள் நினைத்தது நிறைவேறட்டும். Idaiyoorugal yaavum agalattum; neengal ninaiththathu niraivaerattum. "May every obstacle move aside; may what you have in mind be fulfilled." இடையூறு is the native Tamil word for obstacle, not the Sanskrit-derived one, and the next section explains why that is a decision.

4. For a new start, using the Pillaiyar suzhi

பிள்ளையார் சுழி போட்டு ஒரு புதிய தொடக்கம். உங்கள் புதிய முயற்சி வெற்றி பெறட்டும்! Pillaiyar suzhi pottu oru puthiya thodakkam. Ungal puthiya muyarchi vetri perattum! "A new beginning opened with the Pillaiyar suzhi. May your new venture succeed." The suzhi is the 'உ' mark the lexicon defines as drawn for auspiciousness when you begin to write — send this to someone starting a business or a course.

5. The kozhukattai line

கொழுக்கட்டையின் இனிப்பு போல உங்கள் வாழ்க்கை இனிக்கட்டும்! Kozhukattaiyin inippu pola ungal vaazhkkai inikkattum! "May your life be sweet like the sweetness of the kozhukattai." Naming kozhukattai instead of modak is the clearest single signal that a wish was written for a Tamil reader.

6. For a whole family, using the arugampul

அறுகம்புல் போல உங்கள் குடும்பம் என்றும் பசுமையாகத் தழைக்கட்டும். Arugampul pola ungal kudumbam endrum pasumaiyaaga thazhaikkattum. "Like arugampul, may your family stay green and flourish." அறுகு is Cynodon dactylon, the grass the lexicon records as "used in ceremonies" — the durva laid at Pillaiyar's feet.

7. For someone who has had a hard year

இந்த வருடம் கடினமாக இருந்தது. விநாயகர் அருளால் இனிவரும் நாட்கள் இலகுவாக அமையட்டும். Indha varudam kadinamaaga irundhadhu. Vinayagar arulaal inivarum naatkal ilaguvaaga amaiyattum. "This year has been hard. By Vinayagar's grace, may the days ahead come easier." Naming the bad year first is what separates this from a forward. Do not soften it.

8. Asking for a blessing instead of giving one

உங்கள் வாழ்த்தும் பிள்ளையாரின் அருளும் எங்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கட்டும். சதுர்த்தி வாழ்த்துக்கள்! Ungal vazhthum Pillaiyarin arulum engalukku kidaikkattum. Chaturthi vazhthukkal! "May we receive both your blessing and Pillaiyar's grace. Chaturthi greetings." Sent to a grandparent or a teacher, this reverses the direction of the vazhthu, which is the polite form.

9. Spoken Tamil, for a friend

விநாயகர் சதுர்த்தி வாழ்த்துக்கள்ங்க! கொழுக்கட்டை சாப்பிட வீட்டுக்கு வாங்க. Vinayagar Chaturthi vazhthukkalnga! Kozhukattai saappida veettukku vaanga. "Chaturthi greetings! Come over and eat kozhukattai." The -ங்க clitic and வாங்க are koduntamil, the spoken form: nobody prints this on a card and everybody types it on WhatsApp.

Idaiyuru or vikkinam: a hundred-year-old argument inside a two-line greeting

Tamil has two words for the obstacle Vinayagar removes, and picking one is not neutral. The lexicon glosses இடையூறு as "impediment, obstruction, hindrance" and then defines விக்கினம் as "n. vighna. Obstacle, impediment, hindrance; இடையூறு" — marking it, in the entry itself, as the Sanskrit import.

That distinction has a movement behind it. In Harold Schiffman's chapter on Tamil language policy, the purist tradition — the tanit tamiḻ iyakkam — is dated from Maraimalai Adigal's 1915–16 vow to speak only pure Tamil, after Caldwell's 1856 grammar and the 1880 rediscovery of the classical texts.

விக்கினம் is not wrong, and older devotional Tamil is full of it. But இடையூறு reads as Tamil written by a Tamil speaker, and விக்கினம் reads as translated Sanskrit, so use இடையூறு if you have no view on the argument.

Centamil, koduntamil, and what people actually type on a phone

Written Tamil and spoken Tamil are different languages in practice. Schiffman calls Tamil "severely diglossic": the literary variety shows few changes since its thirteenth-century codification by Pavanandi, spoken Tamil has changed radically over the same period, and despite rising literacy "diglossia shows no signs of diminishing".

Richard Ishida's Tamil orthography notes, updated 28 April 2026, agree: the classic form is preferred for writing and public speaking, and the colloquial form differs widely from it. Wishes 1 to 8 are centamil; wish 9 is koduntamil, and sending it to a grandmother reads as sloppy rather than warm.

Script is the second decision. A corpus of 15,744 code-mixed Tamil sentences, filtered from 184,573 YouTube comments, reports that most comments were written in Roman script rather than Tamil script, because Tanglish needs no Tamil keyboard.

That describes a comment thread, not a greeting. Romanised Tamil is fine between friends; to an elder, English letters look like you could not be bothered to switch keyboards. Ishida also records that the 1978 Tamil Nadu script reforms spread only in India and the digital world, so a Sri Lankan or Malaysian reader may hold older syllable forms to be the correct ones.

Kozhukattai is not modak, and the wish should say so

The Maharashtrian word is modak; the Tamil word is கொழுக்கட்டை, kozhukattai — defined in the Tamil Lexicon as a bolus of rice flour with coconut scrapings and jaggery. The telling part: its entry for மோதகம், modakam, sends you back to கொழுக்கட்டை rather than the other way round.

So the Sanskrit-derived word exists in Tamil and is simply not the everyday one. "May your day be as sweet as the modak" is a Marathi wish wearing Tamil letters, and Tamil readers notice.

The same applies to the offering: arugampul, red hibiscus and kozhukattai are what actually reaches a Tamil Pillaiyar. What it costs to send a Vinayagar Chaturthi wish four ways

Four channels, compared on cost and on what survives the trip.

The password column is the one no competitor can fill. That 42.1% is measured across all 15 SubhSandesh page types, not Ganesh pages, but the point holds: people writing something personal often do not want it forwarded on. One more platform-wide number, sampled on 1,065 love-gf pages rather than Ganesh ones: the median gap between a page's first save and its last edit is 6.8 hours. People come back to fix wording, which is what you want in a script you type slowly.

Where a Tamil wishes page loses

A page cannot hand anyone a kozhukattai, and it cannot stand you in front of the Pillaiyar at the end of your street on 14 September. If you are in the same city, go, and take the sweet with you.

It also loses with a recipient who has no smartphone — the platform-wide 49.6% mobile-open rate implies the other half of views are not on phones at all. A grandmother who reads Tamil on paper rather than glass is better served by a card in your handwriting, or a phone call in koduntamil.

And if you cannot check the Tamil, do not send Tamil. A wrong vowel sign lands worse than the same sentiment in clear English, because it reads as a machine-translated forward.
