- • Emily Post's 1922 Etiquette lists eight anniversary materials, from paper (year 1) to diamond (year 75), and calls the paper, wood and tin presents 'seldom anything but jokes', so years 1, 5 and 10 suit a playful Halloween twist.
- • 31 October falls on a Saturday in 2026, a Sunday in 2027 and a Tuesday in 2028; UK clocks go back at 2am on 31 October 2027, giving a midnight anniversary an extra hour.
- • Relational savoring walks one shared memory through five steps (senses, emotions, meaning, future, free recall), a ready-made ten-minute ritual for reliving a first Halloween.
- • 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone and 38.5% of creators password-protect a page, so a midnight anniversary page should be phone-first and locked.

Halloween Anniversary Ideas When Your Date Falls on 31 October
The best Halloween anniversary ideas treat 31 October as two occasions sharing one date: a private ritual for the two of you, then the town's costumes and candy. Match the idea to the year (paper for the 1st, wood for the 5th, tin for the 10th), and if you send something digital, plan for a phone, because 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are opened on one (27,725 of 57,456 views). Lock it if it is personal; 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators password-protect a page before sharing it.
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027. Below: the source of the paper-wood-tin list, ideas by year, reliving your first Halloween, sizing the night, trick-or-treating, and a midnight reveal.
What counts as an anniversary on Halloween?
An anniversary on Halloween is any yearly milestone that lands on 31 October: the wedding, the first date, the first "I love you", or the night you became official. Dating anniversaries count as much as wedding ones; a couple who met at a 2019 costume party has a 31 October anniversary too.
The calendar decides most of the logistics. In 2026 the date is a Saturday, in 2027 a Sunday and in 2028 a Tuesday, so two easy weekend years are followed by a school night. Plan the next three anniversaries together now, since the weekday shifts the plan more than the theme does.
Where do the paper, wood and tin anniversary themes come from?
The classic list is older than most gift guides admit. Emily Post's 1922 book Etiquette, chapter on wedding anniversaries (Project Gutenberg) lists eight milestones: 1 year paper, 5 wood, 10 tin, 15 crystal, 20 china, 25 silver, 50 gold and 75 diamond. The year-by-year list most shops print now is a later, longer expansion, so a modern chart that gives a material for year 3 or year 7 is not Post's.
Post also wrote that paper, wooden and tin presents were "seldom anything but jokes", and that crystal was the earliest gift likely to be taken seriously. That is the most useful sentence for a Halloween couple. Years 1, 5 and 10 were always meant to be playful, so a spooky twist honours the tradition rather than bending it.
Halloween anniversary ideas by year: 1st, 5th, 10th and beyond
Each idea gives the material, the twist, the effort and the moment to hand it over. All three are built to be reused every 31 October; crystal and silver are in the table below.
1. First anniversary (paper): twelve trick-or-treat tickets
Tear twelve tickets from a strip of card and write one small promise for each month of year two, such as "one breakfast I cook", "one walk you choose". It suits couples on a tight budget and takes about an hour with a pen and a ruler. Hand the strip over after the doorbell goes quiet, and tape the used stubs into a jar by next October.
2. Fifth anniversary (wood): an engraved candy bowl
Buy a plain wooden bowl and have both first names and the wedding date burned or engraved on the rim, then use it every year to hand out sweets. It suits couples who host the doorstep crowd, and a local engraver usually needs about a week. Give it on the morning of 31 October so it works its first shift that evening.
3. Tenth anniversary (tin): a punched-tin lantern
Punch your wedding date into a tin can or a plain tin lantern as a pattern of holes, so candlelight writes the date on the porch wall. It suits couples who like making things, and a hammer-and-nail version takes an afternoon; use a battery tea light near children's costumes. Light it at dusk and leave it out until the last knock.
Halloween anniversary by year, compared
Each row pairs Emily Post's 1922 material with a Halloween use and a realistic lead time. Lead times are editorial estimates, not measured data.
| Anniversary | 1922 material (Post) | Halloween idea | Lead time to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Paper | 12 trick-or-treat promise tickets | About 1 hour, same day |
| 5th | Wood | Engraved candy bowl | About 1 week for engraving |
| 10th | Tin | Punched-tin date lantern | 1 afternoon |
| 15th | Crystal | Two glasses kept for one yearly toast | About 2 weeks for personalising |
| 25th | Silver | 25 remembered-Halloween notes | 2 evenings of writing |
The early years are the cheap, playful ones by design. Let the effort climb with the material, not with the decorations.
How to recreate your first Halloween together
Reliving your first Halloween works best as a remembered story, not a staged copy. Relational savoring, a short exercise studied by family psychologists, asks a person to recall one moment of closeness and walk through it in five steps: sensory reflection, emotion reflection, meaning making, future focus and open-ended mind wandering, as a 2025 Journal of Marital and Family Therapy paper describes. It notes earlier trials found gains in wellbeing and relationship quality.
Turn those five steps into a ten-minute anniversary ritual. Sit somewhere dim and take turns answering these:
- What could you see, hear and smell that first 31 October?
- What did you feel when you first saw each other that night?
- What does that night say about who we are now?
- What do we want next 31 October to look like?
- What else comes back to you if we just keep talking?
Choose the memory carefully. In a 2025 Family Process randomised trial of 150 mothers, two kinds of attachment memory both helped, and the authors advise focusing on whichever memory brings the strongest positive feeling and connection. For a couple, that may be the walk home rather than the party.
Low-key or big: how much should a Halloween anniversary do?
The size matters less than the reply. A 2024 review in Sleep Advances reports daily-diary work with military-connected couples in which capitalization support, the warm response a partner gives when good news is shared, was linked to greater intimacy and better sleep for both partners. An anniversary is shared good news, so the enthusiastic toast counts for more than the budget.
The clock helps too. In the UK, clocks go back an hour at 2am on Sunday 31 October 2027, per GOV.UK's clock-change table, so a midnight anniversary toast gets an extra hour before morning. In most of the US, 15 U.S. Code § 260a ends daylight saving at 2am on the first Sunday of November, which is 1 November 2026, the morning after a Saturday anniversary.
So pick the scale by weekday and energy, not by what a party board suggests. Three sizes that work:
- Low-key (2026 or 2027 weekends): the ten-minute savoring ritual, one gift from the by-year list, takeaway at home.
- Medium: a dinner booked for 30 October, leaving the 31st for the doorstep.
- Big: a milestone party on the nearest Saturday, which is 31 October itself in 2026 and 30 October in 2027.
How do you share the day with kids' trick-or-treating?
Split 31 October into three shifts: morning for the two of you, dusk for the costumes, and the anniversary after the last knock. On Tuesday 31 October 2028 the last shift is short, so keep a small gift ready rather than a dinner. Three tactics keep both occasions intact:
- Let the children carry the engraved bowl or the tin lantern, so they learn the anniversary story through the objects.
- Trade shifts with another family: you walk their children one year, they walk yours the next.
- Tell the kids it is your anniversary and give them a job, such as hiding a card or lighting the lantern with you.
A midnight reveal with a Halloween page
If you live apart or want the first words of the day, a link set to open at midnight does what a card cannot. The premium Halloween page with a voice note and unlock time shows only their name and a countdown until the time you pick, then plays your voice note of up to 60 seconds, holds up to 12 photos and a 3,000-character letter, and has a reply box. It takes about ten minutes to build, which suits the five savoring prompts written out in your own words.
For a shorter surprise, the interactive Halloween card with photos and music takes about five minutes, carries up to six photos, lets them carve a word you choose, such as "forever", into a pumpkin and ends with a Boo License. For a partner who loves dark romance but not pumpkins, a dramatic dark romantic page skips the Halloween imagery entirely.
Do not leave it to 30 October. Our nearest analogue is Raksha Bandhan 2026, a different festival with a small sample (n = 89): of the 79 pages finished in time, 55.7% were built on the day itself and 86.1% within 24 hours of it. An unlock time lets you finish early and still land at midnight, with one of these original lines in the letter:
- "Same date, same porch, another year of you answering the door."
- "Most people get one celebration on 31 October. We get two, and I would pick you over the candy every time."
- "Year five: the bowl is wood, the promises are not."
When a Halloween anniversary page is the wrong choice
Skip the Halloween framing if your partner dislikes the holiday or if 31 October also marks a loss in the family; an anniversary should not have to compete with a theme one person tolerates. A dinner on 1 November, which is All Saints' Day, can be the gentler choice.
SubhSandesh is also the wrong tool in several cases. Both pages are in English and made for one recipient, and shared pages open on a phone 48.3% of the time, so they do not suit a guest list, a printed keepsake or a grandparent who prefers paper. For a 25th or 50th, a printed album beats any link.
