Halloween Boo Grams: How to Run the Sale and What to Write
Halloween boo grams are small treat-and-note deliveries that a school club, PTA or team sells to students in the two weeks before 31 October, then hands out in class on the last school day before Halloween. On the order forms we checked in October 2026, a gram sold for 50 cents to $5. For the one friend you would rather surprise properly, a digital boo gram works too: 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, and 90.9% of pages started are actually sent.
This guide takes the organizer's side. It covers a seven-step run sheet with 2026 and 2027 dates, the US food rule that decides whether candy is allowed, how to make sure no child gets zero grams, and 20 original lines for the tag.
What is a boo gram?
A boo gram is a Halloween version of a candy gram: one person pays a small amount, writes a short note, and a volunteer delivers it with a treat or trinket to someone else at school. The club keeps the money.
It is not the same as being "booed", the neighborhood game where a bag moves from doorstep to doorstep. A boo gram is sold, sorted and delivered inside one building on one day, so it needs a run sheet, a food check and a fairness rule.
How to run a boo gram sale in 7 steps
Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027, so delivery moves to Friday 30 October 2026 and Friday 29 October 2027. Each step names the owner, the time and a planning number.
1. Get sign-off and check the food rule
Send the principal and nutrition contact one page: dates, price, contents and where the money goes. The club adviser owns it, and it takes about 30 minutes. Ask in writing whether the state counts this as an exempt fundraiser, and how many are left this year.
2. Pick two tiers and price them
Offer a basic gram and a deluxe one, never five options. The treasurer owns pricing, about an hour with a supplier list. Our estimate: keep contents near 30–40% of the sale price, so a $1 gram carries about 35 cents of goods.
3. Build the order form
Each order needs five fields: sender name (or "secret"), recipient full name, homeroom, tier, and a message of 120 characters or less. One volunteer builds a paper and an online version in about 45 minutes. Longer notes will not fit a 2 x 3.5 inch tag.
4. Sell for 7 school days, then stop
Sell at lunch from Monday 19 October 2026 (Monday 18 October 2027) and close on Tuesday 27 October 2026 (Tuesday 26 October 2027). Expect a late rush: on SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself (n = 89, a different festival used as the nearest analogue), so print the cut-off on every poster.
5. Screen every message
Two adults read every note before packing, roughly one minute per ten notes. Pull anything about bodies, crushes in elementary grades, inside jokes that could read as teasing, or a wrong name.
6. Sort by homeroom, then pack
Sort slips by homeroom before packing; the reverse doubles the work. Four volunteers can pack about 200 grams in an hour (our estimate). Staple each tag to its bag so it cannot slip off.
7. Deliver in one period and report the total
Deliver every gram in one class period on the Friday, ideally the last, so lessons are interrupted once. Afterward, post the total raised and the grams delivered as next year.s baseline.
Can a boo gram include candy? The Smart Snacks rule
In a US school in the National School Lunch Program, a lollipop gram sold to students during the school day is a "competitive food". Under 7 CFR 210.11, the federal Smart Snacks standard, the school day runs from midnight before to 30 minutes after classes end, and food sold in that window must meet nutrition limits.
Those limits rule most candy out. Snacks may carry no more than 200 calories and 200 mg of sodium, and total sugar may not exceed 35% of the item's weight, which a hard lollipop fails. The section allows an "infrequent school-sponsored fundraiser" exception, but only as often as the state agency allows, and never in the cafeteria during meal service. There are three clean ways through:
- Run the sale as one of your state's exempt fundraisers, with written approval.
- Use a non-food gram: a pencil, a sticker sheet, an eraser or a glow stick.
- Use sugar-free gum, which the same rule exempts from all the standards, at the district's discretion.
If grams are given rather than sold, for instance a class making one for every classmate, the wellness policy applies instead. 7 CFR 210.31 requires each district policy to set standards for food "provided, but not sold" during the school day. Outside the US, ask your school which food standard applies.
How to make sure no child gets zero grams
The real risk of a boo gram sale is the student who gets nothing while a friend gets six. A 2015 meta-analysis of 120 Cyberball studies with 11,869 participants found that being left out of a simple ball-tossing game had a large average effect (d greater than 1.4), across ages and countries. A public delivery round can recreate it. Four rules close the gap:
- The seed gram. Hold back 10% of every sale to buy one gram for every student on the class list, signed from the whole club.
- No counting out loud. Runners hand bags to the teacher, who gives them out at the end of the period, never one name at a time.
- A cap per buyer. Five grams per sender stops one group from turning the day into a ranking.
- A non-food match. A student with a known food allergy gets the non-food version of every gram addressed to them, sealed and labelled.
Boo gram tiers compared
The table compares four sellable formats, using prices seen on school order forms and our contents estimates. Price ranges are a snapshot from October 2026.
| Format | Sale price (seen or est.) | Contents | Smart Snacks status (sold in school day) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Note-only gram | 25–50 cents (est.) | Printed tag, hand-written line | Not food, rule does not apply |
| Candy gram | 50 cents–$1 | One lollipop or chew + tag | Needs an exempt-fundraiser slot |
| Non-food gram | $1–$2 (est.) | Pencil, sticker sheet or glow stick + tag | Not food, rule does not apply |
| Deluxe bag | $3–$5 | Cup, 3–5 treats, small toy, card | Needs an exempt-fundraiser slot |
The takeaway: a non-food gram at $1–$2 raises about as much per order as candy and needs no exemption. Keep candy for the deluxe tier, and only with a state slot.
Boo gram ideas: 20 original lines for the tag
A 2008 review in Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review listed peer-to-peer written praise, or "tootle" notes, as an evidence-based classroom routine linked to social competence. In a 2012 Vancouver study of 415 students aged 9 to 11, children asked to do three kind acts a week for four weeks gained more peer acceptance than a comparison group.
So the line matters more than the lollipop. Each one fits a 120-character tag.
For a best friend
- Ghost rule number one: I haunt you, you haunt me back.
- You are the only person I would share my last fun-size bar with. Almost.
- Our group chat is spooky without you. Come back from wherever you are.
- Every haunted house is better with you screaming next to me.
- Certified best friend. Nine out of ten skeletons agree.
For a teacher
- Thank you for the lessons that did not feel like homework. Mostly.
- You made fractions less scary than any haunted house.
- From the back row, with respect and one pencil.
- This gram counts as extra credit for you, not me.
- Best boo crew captain in the building.
For a new student
- Welcome to the haunted hallway. Our lunch table has a spare seat.
- You picked a good school to haunt. Glad you are here.
- First Halloween here? You are officially part of the crew now.
- Somebody noticed you. It was me. Happy Halloween.
- No costume needed. You already fit in.
For a teammate or sibling
- Same team, same scary practice schedule.
- You carried the group project. I carried the candy.
- I will not tell Mom about your candy stash. This time.
- You are annoying 364 days a year. Not today.
- Boo from the other end of the hallway.
A digital boo gram for the one person you want to surprise
A school sale is a crowd tool; a SubhSandesh page is not. It is a one-person greeting page, for the friend who moved schools or a sibling in college.
The interactive Halloween card with photos and music is the quick one: up to 6 photos, a letter, a pumpkin they carve to reveal your word, and a Boo License at the end, in about five minutes. Its Kids tone has no jump scares. For a closer friend, the cinematic Halloween page with a voice note adds a voice note up to 60 seconds, up to 12 photos, an unlock time and a reply box, in about ten minutes.
When a digital boo gram is the wrong choice
It is the wrong tool for an in-school sale, and paper wins for a young child without a phone, and for a classmate you will see on Friday anyway. A link can be password-protected, which 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators do, but it cannot reach a whole homeroom. For occasions after 31 October, browse every SubhSandesh template.
