- • A starter Halloween charcuterie board needs about 60 g of meat and cheese per adult, or 150 g if it is the meal (EST, built from the FDA's 30 g cheese reference amount).
- • FDA guidance gives unchilled perishables 2 hours, cut to 1 hour once a room passes 32 °C (90 °F); a clock-face layout lets guests see the time.
- • For a pregnant guest, the NHS wants brie and camembert cooked through and salami heated until steaming; pasteurised paneer is on its safe list.
- • Festival prep runs late: in SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 data (n = 89, nearest analogue), 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself.

Halloween Charcuterie Board Plans, Sized Gram by Gram per Guest
A Halloween charcuterie board for six adults needs about 360 g of cured meat and cheese if dinner follows, or about 900 g if the board is the meal, plus crackers, fruit and two dips. Build it close to serving time, because the US FDA's limit for perishables at room temperature is 2 hours, cut to 1 hour above 32 °C (90 °F).
Most hosts assemble late anyway. SubhSandesh has no Halloween data; its closest festival analogue is Raksha Bandhan 2026, a small sample of 89 pages, where 49.4% of greeting pages were made on the day of the festival and 86.1% of those finished in time came together in its final 24 hours.
Below are four original spooky charcuterie board designs with quantities, layouts and EST costs, then the pregnancy swaps for brie and salami.
What is a Halloween charcuterie board?
A Halloween charcuterie board is a cold grazing platter of cured meat, cheese, crackers, fruit and dips, arranged so the layout itself carries the spooky theme. A spooky charcuterie board is the same thing under another name.
Strictly, charcuterie means cured meat, yet two of the four designs below carry none, because one guest list rarely eats from one rulebook.
How much food per guest? A grams rule anchored to FDA serving sizes
No official party portion exists for a cheese board, so this rule starts from the closest official number. The FDA's Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed in 21 CFR 101.12, the table behind US label serving sizes, sets 30 g for most cheeses, 30 g for snack crackers, 15 g for olives, 85 g for fresh vegetables and 2 tablespoons for a dip.
Those are labelling references, not appetite measures, so the rule below doubles some of them and labels each figure EST.
- Starter board, dinner follows (EST): 60 g meat and cheese, 30 g crackers, 85 g fruit and vegetables, 15 g olives or pickles and 2 tablespoons of dip per adult.
- Board as the meal (EST): 150 g meat and cheese, 60 g crackers or bread, 150 g fruit and vegetables and 3 tablespoons of dip per adult.
- Sweet board (EST): 60 g sweets and 50 g fruit per guest, served after food.
- Children under 10 (EST): half the adult figures.
For six adults before dinner, that is 360 g of meat and cheese, 180 g of crackers and about 500 g of produce. At 12 guests, build two boards, for the timing reason below.
4 Halloween charcuterie board designs, each for 6 guests
Every design follows one pattern: the look, what to buy, the layout, then cost and time. Costs are EST from typical October 2026 supermarket prices.
1. Witching Hour clock board (savoury, adults)
The look: a round board laid out as a clock face, with twelve small piles on the hour marks and a grissini as the hand. Point it at the minute the board leaves the fridge, and anyone can read how long it has been out.
Buy for 6 (starter): 90 g aged cheddar, 90 g manchego, 90 g salami, 90 g coppa, 180 g crackers, 90 g black olives and cornichons, 2 figs, 1 red apple, fig jam and wholegrain mustard.
Layout: jam at 12 o'clock and mustard at 6; cheese wedges at 1, 5, 7 and 11; meat ribbons at 2, 4, 8 and 10; olives at 3 and cornichons at 9. Crackers, figs and apple fans fill the middle, and the grissini hand goes on last.
Cost and time (EST): $32–45 in the US, or ₹2,400–3,400 in Indian metros, where imported salami pushes the bill up. About 35 minutes.
2. Eclipse board (sweet)
The look: eight small piles in an arc, running from pale to black like the moon sliding into a total eclipse. At the dark end sits a bowl of salted caramel as the copper "blood moon".
Buy for 6: 360 g sweets in eight steps (white-chocolate buttons, coconut barfi, shortbread, candied orange peel, gingersnaps, milk chocolate, chocolate wafers, 70% dark chocolate), 300 g mandarins and blackberries, and salted caramel.
Layout: caramel bowl at the right-hand end, the arc running pale to dark towards it, and fruit scattered below as a starfield.
Cost and time (EST): $18–25, or ₹800–1,200. About 20 minutes. Check the barfi label, since some recipes use cashew.
3. Haunted Map board (children under 10)
The look: a rectangular board turned into a treasure map, with a trail of round crackers as stepping stones linking five named places. Each place gets a paper flag the child writes.
Buy for 6 children: 180 g mild cheddar and edam cubes (Boulder Hill), 90 g round crackers (the trail), carrot and cucumber batons (Fallen Forest), apple and pear slices tossed in lemon (Lantern Orchard), and 6 tablespoons each of yoghurt-cucumber dip (Fog Lake) and pea-and-mint dip (Moss Pond).
Layout: the child draws the map on baking paper over the board; an adult sets the dips, the child lays the trail and the flags. No grapes or cured meat, and round foods for under-5s get quartered.
Cost and time (EST): $14–20, or ₹600–900. About 20 minutes of adult cutting.
4. Haveli board (vegetarian, Indian-friendly)
The look: a long board set as a haunted haveli courtyard, with khakhra shards standing along the back like broken arches and a tamarind-chutney "well" in the centre. Beetroot-pickled onions turn blood-red without food colouring.
Buy for 6 (starter): 300 g paneer grilled as tikka, 120 g khakhra, 60 g mathri, 200 g kala chana chaat, 120 g beetroot-pickled onions, 40 g roasted makhana, 150 g pomegranate arils, 2 guavas in wedges with chaat masala, and mint and tamarind chutneys.
Layout: chutney bowls first, paneer skewers through the middle, khakhra along the back, then the fruit and onions, with makhana last so it stays crisp. For Jain guests, swap the onion and beetroot for raw mango.
Cost and time (EST): ₹750–1,100, or $16–24 outside India, where paneer costs more. About 45 minutes including the grill.
The 4 boards compared: grams per guest, safe time out and EST cost
Here the four designs sit side by side on the numbers a host plans around, using the grams rule above.
| Board | Main protein per guest (EST) | Safe time at room temperature | Cost for 6 (EST, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Witching Hour (savoury) | 60 g meat and cheese | 2 h; 1 h above 32 °C | $32–45 / ₹2,400–3,400 |
| Eclipse (sweet) | None; 60 g sweets, 50 g fruit | 2 h for the cut fruit | $18–25 / ₹800–1,200 |
| Haunted Map (kids) | 30 g cheese | 2 h; 1 h above 32 °C | $14–20 / ₹600–900 |
| Haveli (vegetarian) | 50 g paneer | 2 h; 1 h above 32 °C | ₹750–1,100 / $16–24 |
The savoury board costs two to three times the vegetarian one, and every board with dairy or cut fruit runs on the same 2-hour clock.
How long can a charcuterie board sit out?
Two hours at room temperature, then back in the fridge or out. The FDA's Serving Up Safe Buffets guidance sets a 2-hour limit for unchilled perishables and halves it to 1 hour once the room passes 90 °F, roughly 32 °C.
It also wants cold dishes held at or below 40 °F, about 4 °C, until serving, and a near-empty dish swapped for a fresh one rather than refilled. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027, and a host on doorbell duty loses track of time, so build two half-boards and swap in the chilled one at two hours.
Sliced deli meat needs extra care for older or immunosuppressed guests. A 2025 Eurosurveillance outbreak report from a German hospital traced listeriosis in three patients to sealed, packaged sliced sausage and ham. Counts were under 100 CFU/g, within an EU threshold, and the authors still call deli meats high-risk for people with weakened immune systems.
Brie, salami and pregnancy: what to swap on the board
Most of a board is fine for a pregnant guest, except the two things that make it look like charcuterie. The NHS pregnancy food guidance (reviewed 15 June 2026) puts brie, camembert, chèvre with a white rind and soft blue-veined cheese on its cook-thoroughly list, and wants cold cured meats such as salami, chorizo and prosciutto heated until steaming.
The risk is listeria. A 2026 study of 1,604 Australian mother-infant pairs in the Journal of Pregnancy notes that pregnant women are 20 times more likely than the general population to contract listeriosis, and that the bacterium survives at fridge temperatures of 0–5 °C.
Three swaps keep the pregnant guest at the board:
- Bake the camembert in its box until steaming hot right through, and set it down last.
- Crisp the salami in a dry pan into hot chips, served straight away.
- Lean on the safe list. The NHS clears cheddar, parmesan and other hard cheeses, plus pasteurised paneer, mozzarella and halloumi, so the Haveli board works almost as it stands.
A Halloween greeting for the one friend missing from the board
SubhSandesh's Halloween pages are not a party tool or a crowd invitation; they suit the one sister in another city who would normally build the board with you.
The interactive Halloween card, which holds six photos at most, is roughly a 5-minute build: add a shot of the finished board, then they knock on a little haunted house, carve a jack-o'-lantern and find your letter in a dark attic. The premium page that carries a voice note of up to 60 seconds needs about 10 minutes and holds up to 12 photos, an optional unlock time and a single reply capped at 280 characters.
If they live close enough to share the next board, the date invitation page, where a yes starts a countdown, suits a two-person board night better. It will most likely be read on a phone: 48.3% of shared SubhSandesh pages are, while 38.5% of creators add a password before sharing.
Don't send it if they are sitting at your table, have no smartphone, or read more comfortably in another language, because the page interface is English-only. And for more than 20 guests in a warm room, small platters swapped through the evening beat one big board.
