- • A 60 ml (2 oz) pour of 40% rye is 2.4 UK units or about 1.4 US standard drinks, so a smoked Old Fashioned is nearly double a Black Veil Royale (1.3 units).
- • Tonic glows blue under a UV lamp because quinine is excited near 350 nm and fluoresces near 450 nm; quinine-free tonic will not glow.
- • Butterfly pea extract reads purplish-red at pH 3 and bright blue at pH 7, so add the lemon in front of your guest.
- • Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027; a 10-serve cider punch holds 13.8 UK units in the bowl.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, which is why each recipe here fits one screen.

Halloween Cocktails: 8 Original Recipes Measured in ml and oz
The best Halloween cocktails pair a real trick, such as a drink that glows or changes colour, with a measured spec you can repeat. Below are 8 original recipes in ml and oz, each costed in UK units and US standard drinks, for Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027. Each spec fits one phone screen, because on SubhSandesh 48.3% of shared pages are opened on a phone (27,725 of 57,456 views).
Then come the science behind the tricks, the alcohol in each glass, and a way to toast someone far away. A greeting page made on our site averages 11.1 views, so a toast sent as a link tends to be opened more than once. All drinks here are for adults of legal drinking age.
What makes a Halloween cocktail work?
A Halloween cocktail is a mixed drink whose look does the theming: colour, glow, smoke or garnish, with a balanced recipe underneath. Underneath, it should still taste like a sour or highball you'd order in March.
In a 2015 review in the journal Flavour, Charles Spence calls colour the single most important product-intrinsic cue for setting taste and flavour expectations, and notes that a colour that doesn't match the taste can leave drinkers disappointed. So a jet-black drink that tastes of lime needs a warning on the menu card.
8 Halloween cocktails for adults, with exact measures
Each recipe lists build, method, trick and strength in that order. We round 1 oz to 30 ml (exactly 29.6 ml) and assume 40% ABV spirits unless stated, so check your bottle.
1. Blacklight Banshee (gin and tonic that glows)
- Build: 45 ml (1½ oz) gin, 120 ml (4 oz) tonic water, 10 ml (⅓ oz) lime juice, a long lime peel.
- Method: build over ice in a highball; stir twice to keep the fizz.
- The trick: under a UV black light the tonic glows a cold blue. Tonic made without quinine will not glow, so read the label.
- Strength: 1.8 UK units, 1.0 US standard drink.
2. Changeling Sour (blue gin that blushes purple)
- Build: 45 ml (1½ oz) butterfly-pea gin, 22 ml (¾ oz) lemon juice, 15 ml (½ oz) sugar syrup.
- Method: steep 5 dried butterfly pea flowers per 100 ml gin for 30 minutes, then strain. Shake gin and syrup with ice, strain into a coupe, and pour the lemon in front of your guest.
- The trick: the drink starts deep blue and shifts towards violet as the citrus goes in.
- Strength: 1.8 UK units, 1.0 US standard drink.
3. Bonfire Rosemary Old Fashioned (smoke in the glass)
- Build: 60 ml (2 oz) rye whiskey, 7.5 ml (¼ oz) maple syrup, 2 dashes aromatic bitters, 1 rosemary sprig.
- Method: stir with ice for 30 seconds and strain over one large cube. Light the sprig on a fire-safe board, blow it out and trap the smoke under the upturned glass for 10 seconds.
- The trick: the glass lifts away in a curl of herb smoke. Keep flames clear of capes, wigs and paper decorations.
- Strength: 2.4 UK units, 1.4 US standard drinks.
4. Lantern-Lit Rum Sour (pumpkin, no egg)
- Build: 45 ml (1½ oz) aged rum, 30 ml (1 oz) pumpkin syrup, 22 ml (¾ oz) lemon juice, 15 ml (½ oz) aquafaba.
- Method: for the syrup, simmer 100 g pumpkin purée, 100 g sugar and 100 ml water for 5 minutes, then strain. Dry-shake everything without ice, shake again with ice, and strain.
- The trick: stencil a tiny jack-o'-lantern face onto the foam with cinnamon through a paper cut-out.
- Strength: 1.8 UK units, 1.0 US standard drink.
5. Nightshade Smash (black-purple tequila)
- Build: 45 ml (1½ oz) blanco tequila, 6 blackberries, 4 sage leaves, 20 ml (⅔ oz) lime juice, 15 ml (½ oz) agave syrup, 30 ml (1 oz) soda water.
- Method: muddle berries and sage, shake with everything but the soda, double-strain over crushed ice and top up.
- The trick: the berry pulp turns the glass near-black at the base, fading to violet at the top.
- Strength: 1.8 UK units, 1.0 US standard drink.
6. Midnight Séance (espresso and vodka)
- Build: 40 ml (1⅓ oz) vodka, 30 ml (1 oz) coffee liqueur at about 20% ABV, 30 ml (1 oz) cold espresso, 10 ml (⅓ oz) sugar syrup.
- Method: shake very hard with ice for 15 seconds and strain into a chilled coupe for a thick crema.
- The trick: set three coffee beans on the foam beside a stencilled crescent moon. It contains caffeine, so serve it early.
- Strength: 2.2 UK units, 1.2 US standard drinks.
7. Harvest Moon Cider Punch (serves 10)
- Build: 750 ml (25 oz) dry cider at 5%, 250 ml (8½ oz) apple brandy, 500 ml (17 oz) cloudy apple juice, 100 ml (3⅓ oz) lemon juice, 2 cinnamon sticks.
- Method: chill every bottle overnight, combine 15 minutes before guests arrive, and serve 160 ml (5⅓ oz) over ice.
- The trick: float thin apple rounds studded with cloves, each one a pale moon.
- Strength: 13.8 UK units in the bowl, about 1.4 units or 0.8 US standard drinks per serving.
8. Black Veil Royale (sparkling and dark)
- Build: 15 ml (½ oz) blackcurrant liqueur at about 15% ABV, 100 ml (3⅓ oz) dry sparkling wine at 11%.
- Method: pour the liqueur into a flute first, then top slowly with chilled wine so the colour rises in a dark column.
- The trick: drop one black grape in the flute; the bubbles lift it and drop it all evening.
- Strength: 1.3 UK units, 0.7 US standard drinks.
Alcohol-free versions of a Halloween drink exist and are worth putting on the same tray, so nobody has to ask. Dress their glasses up just as much.
Halloween cocktails compared: strength, effect and prep
The table groups the 8 recipes by effect, with alcohol per serving worked out from the measures using the NHS unit formula and the NIAAA 14-gram standard.
| Group | Drinks | Alcohol per serving | Prep ahead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glow and colour shift | Blacklight Banshee, Changeling Sour | 1.8 UK units / 1.0 US drink each | 30 min to infuse gin |
| Smoke and spice | Bonfire Rosemary Old Fashioned, Lantern-Lit Rum Sour | 1.8–2.4 units / 1.0–1.4 drinks | 5 min to cook syrup |
| Dark fruit and coffee | Nightshade Smash, Midnight Séance | 1.8–2.2 units / 1.0–1.2 drinks | None |
| Sparkling and batch | Harvest Moon Cider Punch, Black Veil Royale | 1.3–1.4 units / 0.7–0.8 drinks | Chill overnight |
The takeaway: the smoked Old Fashioned carries nearly twice the alcohol of a Black Veil Royale, so they are not equal rounds.
How the glow and colour-shift tricks work
Both tricks are chemistry. A 2025 study in Methods and Protocols reports that quinine is excited by light at around 350 nm and fluoresces at about 450 nm, which is why tonic glows blue under a UV lamp. The same paper notes the US FDA limits quinine in tonic water to 83 ppm.
The butterfly pea shift comes from anthocyanin pigments that react to acidity. A 2026 study in Food Science & Nutrition found the flower extract looked purplish-red at pH 3 and bright blue at pH 7. Lemon juice pushes the drink towards the acid end, so the colour moves while your guest watches.
So set the glow drinks away from the main lamp, because a black light needs a dim room. Add the citrus last, since a pre-mixed batch has already changed colour before anyone sees it.
How strong is a Halloween cocktail? Units and standard drinks
Cocktails hide their strength, so every recipe above carries a number. The NHS alcohol units page defines one UK unit as 10 ml or 8 g of pure alcohol and gives the formula ABV × volume in ml ÷ 1,000. A 25 ml single of 40% spirit is 1 unit.
In the US, the NIAAA standard drink guide puts one standard drink at about 14 grams, or 0.6 fl oz, of pure alcohol, the amount in 1.5 oz of 40% spirits. That is why a 2 oz pour of rye comes out at 1.4 drinks, not one. Drink responsibly: the NHS advises adults not to regularly drink more than 14 units a week, so plan alcohol-free rounds and never drive after the party.
Toasting one person who can't be at the party
Sometimes the person you'd most like to toast is in another city. SubhSandesh's Halloween pages are one-person greetings, not party invitations, so use them for that one toast.
The interactive Halloween card takes about 5 minutes and holds up to 6 photos. They carve a pumpkin, read your letter by flashlight and brew a potion from the 3–5 memories you list, so make the drink you'd have mixed them one ingredient.
The premium Halloween page takes about 10 minutes and adds a voice note of up to 60 seconds, up to 12 photos, an optional unlock time and a reply box of up to 280 characters. Record your toast as the voice note and set the unlock for the hour your party starts.
If the toast is really an invitation to a two-person cocktail night, send a date invitation they have to answer instead; a yes turns into a countdown. On our platform 38.5% of creators password-protect their page before sharing it (2,000 of 5,199), and both Halloween pages offer that option at publish.
When a cocktail recipe or a greeting page is the wrong choice
For anyone under the legal drinking age, pregnant, driving or not drinking, these 8 recipes are the wrong default. Set out the alcohol-free tray first and let the cocktails be the alternative.
A greeting page is wrong when the person is in the room. Hand them the Changeling Sour and pour the lemon yourself. The pages cannot invite a crowd or take RSVPs, and their interface is English-only.
