- • Pick by age first: babies need a fleece base and diaper access, toddlers need separates with hems above the ankle, and kids over 6 need reflective tape built in.
- • A neutral black base plus four accessories covers a cat, ninja, bat or witch, so a child who changes their mind on 30 October needs no new costume.
- • In a study of 925 children aged 7 to 11, 16% of parents said at least four touch or sound sensations bothered their child, so build sensory-friendly costumes from clothes they already wear.
- • Four costume safety checks from KidsHealth and Safe Kids: reflective tape, face paint over masks, the right size to prevent trips, and a flame-retardant label.

Halloween Costume Ideas for Kids, Matched to Age and Temperament
Halloween costume ideas for kids work best picked by age first and temperament second. Babies need warmth and diaper access, toddlers need separates they can walk in, and kids over 6 need to be seen by drivers. Below are 31 ideas in five age bands, each rated for warmth, walkability, bathroom ease and estimated cost, plus a filter for four temperaments, from itch-sensitive to wheelchair user.
Expect a late decision. We hold no Halloween data, but 49.4% of SubhSandesh Raksha Bandhan pages (our nearest measured festival) were built on the day itself, so every idea here can be finished the night before. Since 48.3% of shared pages open on a phone, shoot the costume photo for Grandma full length.
What makes a costume right for a child's age?
An age-appropriate costume is one a child can wear all evening without help: warm, short enough to walk in, and quick to undo for the bathroom. The right pick shifts every two to three years as balance, toileting and fear of masks change.
Each idea ends with four ratings, in order: warmth / walk / bathroom / est. cost. Est. cost is our own US-dollar estimate for parts bought new, not a measured price.
24 Halloween costume ideas for kids, by age
Babies 0–1: 4 ideas built on a fleece sleepsuit
Babies cannot say they are cold, so warmth wins and nothing covers the face. Build on a zip-front fleece sleepsuit.

- Special-delivery stroller: "Fragile" labels on the stroller, baby as the parcel, brakes and harness clear. blanket allowed / wheeled / easy / $3–8
Toddlers 1–3: 5 ideas with no long hems
Toddlers trip on anything below the ankle. Many are potty-training, so choose separates.

Preschool 3–5: 6 ideas they choose themselves
At 3 to 5, children want to be the character. Offer two or three options you can live with, no masks, and let them pick.

Ages 6–8: 4 ideas for a long walk

The temperament filter: 7 costumes for 4 kinds of kid
Age tells you what a child can manage. Temperament tells you what they will tolerate.
The kid who hates itchy fabric: 2 sensory-friendly costumes
Clothing sensitivity is common. In a study of 925 children aged 7 to 11, 16% of parents said at least four touch or sound sensations bothered their child, so build from clothes they already love.
- Pajama character: favorite soft pajamas plus one optional prop. low, add a fleece / easy / easy / $0–5
- Painted sweatsuit skeleton: a worn-in sweatsuit, tags cut out, bones painted on the outside. high / easy / easy / $6–10
The kid who changes their mind daily: 2 swap-ready costumes
Buy the base, not the character. Then the costume can still change on 30 October.
- Black base, four endings: black top and leggings plus ears, belt, wings or hat: cat, ninja, bat or witch. medium / easy / separates / $15–25 for all four
- Reversible cape: superhero on one side, vampire on the other. medium / easy / easy / $8–15
The kid scared of masks: 1 rule and 1 costume
Some children fear other people's masks, not only their own. Walk the route in daylight first, and keep their face uncovered.
- Friendly ghost with a face opening: white hoodie, felt eyebrows on the hood, face visible. high / easy / easy / $8–12
The wheelchair user: 2 builds around the chair
For a wheelchair user, the chair is the scenery and the child the character. Keep wheels, push rims, brakes and handles uncovered, and attach panels with cable ties.
- Hot-air balloon: cardboard basket panels on the chair sides, paper balloon on a short pole. blanket over the knees / wheeled / panels unclip / $15–30
- Steam train: cardboard engine front clipped to the frame, child as driver. blanket over the knees / wheeled / panels unclip / $15–25
Kids' costume rules by age at a glance
This table compares the five age bands. Each row names the concern likeliest to end the night.

|---|---|---|---|
| 0–1 | Cold they can't report | Fleece base, face clear | Pumpkin bunting |
| 1–3 | Tripping, potty trips | Separates, hems above ankle | Penguin puffer |
| 3–5 | Wants to choose | 2–3 options, no masks | Bat with wing sleeves |
| 6–8 | Long walks after dark | Built-in reflective tape | Reflective skeleton |
| 9–12 | Walking with friends | Light source in hand | Lighthouse keeper |
Under-3s dress for warmth and over-6s for visibility. The middle band dresses for choice.
Trick-or-treat costume safety: 4 checks from KidsHealth and Safe Kids
Every costume above passes four checks from Nemours KidsHealth's Halloween safety tips (medically reviewed October 2022) and Safe Kids Worldwide, which names 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. as popular trick-or-treating hours. Run them the night before, in the dark.
- Visibility: reflective or glow-in-the-dark tape on the costume and treat bag (KidsHealth), plus glow sticks or flashlights (Safe Kids).
- Face paint over masks: masks can make it hard to see and breathe, so use non-toxic face paint (KidsHealth).
- Length: the right size to prevent trips and falls (Safe Kids), and no oversized shoes.
- Fire-resistant label: buy costumes labeled "flame-retardant" and make your own from nylon or polyester (KidsHealth). Treat the label as lower risk, not zero, and use battery lights in pumpkins.
Does dressing up help development? What 2 studies found
Costumes are play, not homework. In a 2026 experiment, 131 first-graders (average age 6.9) acted out a story in fox and crane costumes or with puppets, and neither version reliably changed executive-function scores after correction for multiple tests.
Everyday pretend play is different. A 2023 study of 189 children averaging 4.8 years found executive function accounted for unique variance in pretend play (β = .21): a correlation, not proof that costumes build skills. Our reading: buy one that joins the dress-up box after 1 November.
A Halloween card for the kid, in Kids mode
A grandparent or parent can also send the child their own card. The interactive Halloween card with photos has a Kids tone: spooky-cute, round blushing ghosts, no blood, no gore, no jump scares; the trick becomes confetti spiders, nothing goes dark, and the No button waits as "maybe later?".
It holds up to six photos, so the costume shots fit, and its Boo License shows a costume you choose from eight, including ghost and pumpkin. Platform-wide (not Halloween data), 90.9% of started pages are published and shared. For a grandparent's voice, the premium Halloween page with a voice note adds a recording up to 60 seconds.
When a costume plan, or a card, is the wrong call
For a sick or overtired child, or an under-2 asleep by 6 p.m., skip the outing: a sleepsuit with felt ears and ten minutes of porch photos is a full Halloween. Skip any costume needing two adults to fit.
The card loses too: it is a one-person greeting page, not a party invitation or costume shop, and English only. A child under 5 needs an adult to tap through it.
