Halloween Costume Ideas for Teens, Sorted by Where They Wear Them
The best Halloween costume ideas for teens start with where the costume goes: a school corridor, a neighbour's door at 14, a street at 6 pm with a younger sibling, or a party full of phones. Below are 24 ideas for teens aged 13 to 17, including teen girls, sorted into those settings, each with an estimated cost and prep time.
Plan for the photo too: 48.3% of pages shared through SubhSandesh are opened on a phone, and 38.5% of creators password-protect a page before sending it, so teens want a costume that reads on a small screen and a say in who sees it. Below that: two real trick-or-treat age rules, a comparison table and when to skip the whole thing.
What makes a costume work for a teenager?
A teen costume is one that is recognisable at a glance, comfortable for three hours, and not built to look younger than the wearer. For 13- to 17-year-olds the audience is mostly peers, so it must survive a group photo as well as a doorbell.
A 2022 review of social media and adolescent girls' body image describes teens feeling they must stay "camera-ready", because photos are visual, permanent and counted in likes. A costume that only works under perfect lighting fails that test.
24 Halloween costume ideas for teens, sorted by setting
Every idea lists three things in the same order: what to wear, an estimated cost in US dollars for thrifted or craft-store parts, and prep time. Costs are our rough estimates, not checked prices.
1. School costume day: face visible, no props that look like weapons (4 ideas)
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027, so any school costume day lands before the night itself. Assume masks and toy weapons are out unless the school says otherwise.
- Weather forecaster: blazer, a pointer, and a hand-drawn storm map on card. est. $5–10; 30 minutes.
- Chess piece: all black or all white, plus a card crown (queen) or horse-head headband (knight). est. $5–10; 45 minutes.
- Retro radio DJ: big headphones, a cardboard microphone and a "request line open" sign. est. $5–10; 20 minutes.
- Ghost of a hall monitor: grey face powder, a sash, and a lanyard of hall passes. est. $5; 20 minutes.
2. Door-to-door at 13 or 14: obviously a costume, warm, face showing (4 ideas)
A teen in a plain hoodie reads as someone who forgot to dress up. These say "costume" from the end of the drive.
- Sleepwalker: pyjamas over thermals, an eye mask pushed up, a teddy bear, arms out. est. $5; 10 minutes.
- Half-werewolf: faux fur glued down one sleeve and one side of the face, the other side normal. est. $10–15; 1 hour.
- "Dead Last" skeleton runner: skeleton-print thermals, a headband and a race bib reading DEAD LAST. est. $15–20; 20 minutes.
- Bat with wing sleeves: black hoodie with felt wings stitched from underarm to cuff. est. $10; 1 hour.
3. Chaperoning younger siblings at 15 to 17: visible, hands free (4 ideas)
Most lists ignore this teen role, though one town writes it into law (see the next section). Visibility matters: a JAMA Pediatrics study of 42 years of US crash data, 1975 to 2016, found pedestrian deaths 43% higher on Halloween evening, with children aged 4 to 8 at ten times their usual risk and the peak around 6 pm.
- Crossing-guard ghoul: hi-vis vest, green face paint and a card STOP sign that reads BOO. est. $10; 20 minutes.
- Lighthouse keeper: yellow raincoat, knit cap and a head torch as the lamp. est. $10–20; 10 minutes.
- Ghost-tour guide: a lanyard, a clipboard of "haunted stops" and a small flag on a stick with an LED clip. est. $5–10; 30 minutes.
- Zookeeper: khaki shirt, a cap and a name badge, with the younger kids dressed as the animals. est. $10; 15 minutes.
4. Party and photo costumes at 15 to 17 (4 ideas)
Parties reward a strong outline in a flash photo, so these lean on silhouette and contrast. Each one still reads if the room is dim and the camera is a phone.
- Ghost of prom past: thrifted formalwear, grey powder, a wilted corsage. est. $15–25; 30 minutes.
- Victorian mourner: black lace, a short veil and a pocket watch. est. $15–30; 30 minutes.
- Tarot card, The Moon: posterboard panels front and back, card art on one side. est. $5–10; 2 hours.
- Vampire hunter: a long coat, a garlic-bulb necklace and a satchel of wooden spoons as "stakes". est. $10–15; 20 minutes.
5. Halloween costume ideas for teen girls that do not rely on showing skin (4 ideas)
The review above estimates that about 81% of adolescent girls feel at least some dissatisfaction with their bodies, so a costume built on coverage and character takes the pressure off the photo. All four work over leggings and a long-sleeved top.
- Herbalist witch: cardigan, apron with herb pockets and dried flowers in the hair. est. $10–15; 30 minutes.
- Red Riding Hood who won: red cape, basket and a faux-fur wolf stole. est. $15–20; 20 minutes.
- Moth: a cream cardigan with felt wing panels and fuzzy antennae. est. $10–15; 1 hour.
- Spider queen: black jumpsuit with four stuffed-tights legs per side and a small crown. est. $10–15; 1.5 hours.
6. Groups of three or four friends, any mix (4 ideas)
A group costume works when each piece is readable alone and better together. Each of these gives every friend a role they can explain in five words.
- Horror-film trope crew: t-shirts labelled "I'll be right back", "Let's split up", "It's just the wind" and "Final one standing". Est. $5 each; 20 minutes.
- Crime-scene squad: detective, forensic tech, suspect and a friend outlined in white tape. Est. $5–10 each; 30 minutes.
- Ghost-hunting crew: a TV remote as a ghost meter, a torch, and one friend in a grey sheet as the evidence. Est. $5 each; 15 minutes.
- Monsters on holiday: a vampire in a sunhat, a mummy in a floral shirt and a werewolf with a lint roller. Est. $10 each; 30 minutes.
Is there an age limit for trick-or-treating?
Most places set none, but some towns write one into their code. Two New Jersey examples show what these rules look like.
In Pennsauken Township, the curfew chapter of the township code, § 138-6, makes it unlawful for anyone over 14 to trick-or-treat or approach homes on Halloween except as a chaperone for children 14 or younger, and chaperones may not ask for sweets. The same section keeps under-16s off the streets after 8 pm on 29, 30 and 31 October unless an adult is with them, and the code allows a fine of up to $200 plus community service.
The Borough of Little Silver's police regulations, last amended by Ordinance 772-2015, end all trick-or-treating at 8:30 pm on 31 October. Anyone under 18 must be off public streets by then unless with a parent or guardian.
So a 15-year-old in Pennsauken can still dress up, but as a chaperone, without a bag. Rules change, so read your own council's code each October.
Teen costume settings compared
The table compares the five settings by age, prep time, estimated cost and the rule worth checking. Costs are the same rough estimates.
| Setting | Ages | Prep time and est. cost | Rule to check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| School costume day | 13–17 | 10–60 min, est. $5–15 | School dress code on masks and props |
| Door-to-door | 13–14 | 10–60 min, est. $5–20 | Local age limit (Pennsauken: 14) |
| Chaperoning siblings | 15–17 | 10–30 min, est. $5–20 | Local curfew (Little Silver: 8:30 pm) |
| Party and photos | 15–17 | 20 min–2 h, est. $5–30 | Host's rules on fake blood and masks |
| Friend group of 3–4 | 13–17 | 15–30 min, est. $5–10 each | Agree the theme by mid-October |
Chaperoning is the cheapest setting and has the clearest legal role. Party costumes take the most time.
Costume photos and teen girls: who gets to see them
The same 2022 review describes how photo sharing pushes girls to check their own images again and again and to compare them with edited pictures of peers. A costume photo is part of the night, but the teen should choose where it goes.
Pages shared through SubhSandesh average 11.1 views each, so a costume picture gets studied, not glanced at. More than a third of our creators lock pages with a password, the instinct we would back for a teen's photo; agree one group shot for the chat and no posting a friend's picture without asking.
Sending your costume photo to one person
If a grandparent or a best friend at another school missed the costume, a link can carry it. Family or bestie mode swaps the closing "Will you be my boo?" for a friendship or family line.
For a quick one, the interactive Halloween card with a haunted house and pumpkin carving takes up to six photos and about five minutes to make; it ends with a 1080×1920 Boo License. For more room, the premium Halloween page with a voice note and up to 12 photos adds a 60-second voice note and an optional unlock time, in about ten minutes.
Both are one-person greeting pages, not party invitations. For any other occasion, browse every SubhSandesh template.
When a costume list, or our card, is the wrong fit
Skip the costume if a 16-year-old would rather hand out sweets; nobody has to dress up. Skip full masks for a teen walking younger kids after dark, since the JAMA authors list masks that restrict peripheral vision among likely risks.
Our pages have limits too. Every screen is in English, one link reaches one recipient, and the Boo License offers only eight outfits, ghost through bat, so a half-werewolf will not appear on it.
