Halloween Costumes for 4 Friends: 8 Quartets Where Nobody Gets the Boring Part
The best Halloween costumes for 4 friends are sets with exactly four distinct parts, such as the Bremen Town Musicians, the Four Horsemen or the four medieval humours, where each person gets a prop, a pose and a moment of their own. Start early, because people rarely do: in SubhSandesh's Raksha Bandhan 2026 data, our nearest festival analogue (n = 89), 49.4% of pages were built on the day itself.
Because 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, every set here is judged on how it reads in one phone-sized photo. Below: 8 sets, each with roles, a cost estimate per head and a photo plan.
Why is four the easiest group size for a costume?
Researchers treat four as the upper limit for one shared conversation. A 2026 study in the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior capped its groups at four people because that size "provides the optimal environment for individuals to actively partake in a single conversation". Its 254 participants met in 72 groups of three or four.
Four is also a size people naturally move in. In a 2010 PLOS ONE study of about 1,500 pedestrian groups, groups of two to four were the most frequent and groups of five or more were rare. A quartet can walk, talk and pose as one unit.
8 four-person Halloween costumes with a fair role split
Each set has exactly four roles, each with a prop, a pose and a sound or line. Costs are our estimates for homemade versions from US craft and thrift supplies, October 2026, not retailer prices.
1. The Bremen Town Musicians
In the Grimms' tale, a donkey, a hound, a cat and a cock stack themselves at a robbers' window and make music. In the 1884 Hunt translation the robbers run off "thinking no otherwise than that a ghost had come in", which makes it a quiet Halloween story.
- Donkey: the base of the stack and the loudest bray; suits the tallest friend.
- Hound: a collar and a sheet-music scroll; leads the barking.
- Cat: whiskers and a fiddle bow; gets the best mew.
- Cock: red felt comb and the final crow.
- Cost and photo: est. $8–15 each; a staircase, not a real tower, with the donkey kneeling in front and each friend behind one step higher.
2. The Four Horsemen
The riders come from Revelation 6, each with a different horse and object. One correction: the King James text names only the fourth rider, "Death". The first rider is not called "Pestilence"; he carries a bow and a crown and goes out "conquering" (Revelation 6:2–8).
- White horse: paper crown and a toy bow.
- Red horse: a large foam sword.
- Black horse: a pair of kitchen scales held high.
- Pale horse: ashen make-up and a hood; the only rider the text names.
- Cost and photo: est. $15–25 each, mostly hobby horses; four abreast, mid-gallop towards the camera.
3. The four humours
Old medicine sorted temperament into blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. Each friend plays the humour the other three vote for, which is half the fun.
- Sanguine: red top and a permanent grin.
- Choleric: yellow top, arms folded, mock temper.
- Melancholic: all black, a poetry book and a sigh.
- Phlegmatic: pale blanket cape and a mug; refuses to be rushed.
- Cost and photo: est. $5–12 each, mostly your own clothes plus a name sash; a 2×2 grid, two seated and two standing.
4. Edgar Allan Poe's four horrors
Four public-domain Poe works give four roles: "The Masque of the Red Death" (1842), "The Tell-Tale Heart" (1843), "The Black Cat" (1843) and "The Raven" (1845).
- The Raven: black feathers and one word, "Nevermore".
- The Black Cat: ears, a tail and one white patch on the chest.
- The Tell-Tale Heart: a red felt heart that the wearer taps to a beat.
- The Red Death: a red mask and a cloak; comes last in every room.
- Cost and photo: est. $10–20 each; the Red Death at the back, centre, the others curved in front.
5. Four 19th-century novel monsters
Four monsters from novels published between 1818 and 1897, each carrying a cardboard "first edition" with the book's year.
- The creature (1818): bolts of grey card and heavy boots.
- Dorian Gray (1890): a smart suit and an empty picture frame.
- The Invisible Man (1897): bandages and dark glasses; unwrap the face for photos.
- Dracula (1897): cape, high collar, and a polite bow.
- Cost and photo: est. $10–25 each; Dorian holds the frame around the creature's face while the other two lean in.
6. The arcade maze ghosts
The four ghosts from the 1980 arcade game Pac-Man come in red, pink, cyan and orange. Each friend wears a coloured sheet-ghost with a zigzag hem.
- Red, pink, cyan, orange: one colour each, decided by a draw.
- The shared gag: all four sets of eyes look the same way, then switch together when one friend whistles.
- Cost and photo: est. $6–12 each; one staggered line, as if turning a maze corner.
7. The four winds
Greek myth gave each direction a wind: Boreas the north, Notus the south, Eurus the east and Zephyrus the west. Play them as puffed-cheek faces.
- Boreas: icy blue, frost glitter in the beard or brows.
- Notus: warm orange, a rain-cloud prop.
- Eurus: grey and gold, a paper leaf flurry.
- Zephyrus: pale green, a flower crown.
- Cost and photo: est. $5–15 each; four corners of a paper compass rose, all blowing towards the middle.
8. Hansel, Gretel, the witch and the gingerbread house
This Grimm tale has three people, so the fourth role is the house. Whoever wears it gets the centre spot.
- Hansel: a breadcrumb trail of paper crumbs.
- Gretel: an apron and an oven mitt.
- The witch: a shawl, a cane and very polite menace.
- The gingerbread house: a decorated cardboard box with a felt-sweet roof.
- Cost and photo: est. $5–10 each, the house $20–30; the children nibble while the witch peeks out from behind.
Four-person costume sets compared
Here the eight sets are sorted into four effort bands. Costs are homemade estimates, October 2026.
| Set type | Sets | Est. cost per person | Build time each | Faces visible in photos |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fairy-tale casts | Bremen musicians; Hansel and Gretel | $5–30 | 1–3 hours | Yes |
| Literary horror | Poe's four; novel monsters | $10–25 | 2–3 hours | Yes, once the bandages come off |
| Old-world fours | Horsemen; humours; winds | $5–25 | 30 min–2 hours | Yes |
| Arcade ghosts | Maze ghosts | $6–12 | 1 hour | No, unless the eyes are cut out |
Short on time? The humours and the winds come mostly from wardrobes. The ghosts are cheap but hide every face.
How to split four roles so no one gets the boring part
Give every role a prop, a pose and a sound or line, and rewrite any role that lacks them before anyone draws. The house, the donkey and the pale rider start as "background" parts and become the best ones once they get the centre spot.
Passive roles cost more than they seem to. In a 2024 Memory & Cognition study of 60 students in groups of three, overhearers later recalled less of a conversation than speakers and addressees. A costume role with nothing to say or do risks the same.
- Draw roles from a hat, then allow one swap each.
- Pair up for the build: two friends make the props, two do face paint.
- Give the heaviest costume first choice of seat and photo spot.
Group photo layouts that work for four people
Four faces fit one portrait phone screen, so rehearse these layouts before the party. Keep faces visible: in the 2026 study, more facially expressive people were rated warmer and sat more centrally in their group, while attractiveness did not predict standing.
- Line abreast: four in a row facing the camera, the way the 2010 study found friends walk on quiet streets.
- V or arrow: the centre two step forward, the shape groups bend into as crowds thicken.
- 2×2 grid: two seated, two standing.
- Staircase: front to back, one step higher each time.
Sending one of the four a Halloween page
SubhSandesh's two Halloween pages are made for a single recipient, so neither can invite or organise a quartet. Where they fit is afterwards, for the friend who drew the hardest role, like the donkey who knelt through every photo.
The interactive Halloween card for your donkey friend is about a 5-minute build with room for six photos, and its bestie setting turns the closing question into "Will you be my boo-st friend forever?". The premium Halloween page with your own voice is about a 10-minute build and holds 12 photos plus a recorded message of up to 60 seconds.
Pick the card if a short thanks will do; pick premium if your friend should hear you say it. 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators set a password before sending the link, and other occasions sit in the full list of SubhSandesh templates.
When four matching costumes backfire
A quartet breaks if one person drops out at 6 pm. If anyone is unsure, choose the novel monsters or Poe's four, whose roles stand alone, over the Horsemen or the maze ghosts, which look unfinished without the fourth.
Busy streets are another limit: the 2010 study found the V formation reduces the flow of the crowd around it, so walk in pairs between parties. SubhSandesh is limited here too: each page reaches one person, its interface is English only, and it cannot collect RSVPs. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
