- • A fixed five-person set (Bennet sisters, five planets, five oceans) leaves nobody as a spare, unlike a stretchy theme.
- • A 1995 study found about four people is the upper limit for one spontaneous conversation, so groups of five tend to split into a two and a three.
- • Seven of the 8 sets survive one dropout if you name the leaving role in advance; Wu Xing is the exception.
- • Homemade costs run from an estimated $0–5 each (vowels) to $10–25 each (Bennet sisters), October 2026.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh pages are opened on a phone, so stage the five-person photo for a vertical frame: two at the back, three in front.

Halloween Costumes for 5 Friends That Need All Five of You
Halloween costumes for 5 friends work best as closed casts of five, such as the five Bennet sisters, Hesiod's five ages of man or the five planets you can see without a telescope, because nobody ends up as a spare. Plan the photo as carefully as the costumes: 48.3% of the pages shared on SubhSandesh are opened on a phone, and the average page is viewed 11.1 times, so your lineup will be seen small and seen often.
Below are 8 five-person sets with a rough per-head cost, a mixed-gender note and a fallback for the night one friend cancels. Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026 and Sunday 31 October 2027.
What counts as a true five-person set?
A true five-person set is a costume theme with a fixed cast of five, where each role is named and the set looks incomplete with one missing. A stretchy theme, such as "everyone be a monster", fits any headcount instead.
Five is an awkward number for talking, which is why a fixed cast helps. A 1995 study by Dunbar, Duncan and Nettle found an upper limit of about four people in one spontaneous conversation, so a group of five often splits into a two and a three. A shared theme gives everyone a reason to come back into one frame.
8 Halloween costumes for 5 friends, from book sets to closet sets
Each set lists roles, props, who it suits, and cost with a fallback. Costs are our own homemade guesses in US dollars (thrift and craft-store basics, priced as of October 2026); shops will vary.
1. The five Bennet sisters
- Roles: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (1813).
- Props: a shawl for Jane, a mud-spattered hem for Elizabeth, a thick book for Mary, a handkerchief for Kitty, a bonnet with too many ribbons for Lydia.
- Suits: any gender in any role; a long shirt with a ribbon under the chest does the job.
- Cost and fallback: est. $10–25 each. If one cancels, Mary leaves.
The Project Gutenberg text gives you lines to play: Lydia is "a stout, well-grown girl of fifteen", and her father says "Kitty has no discretion in her coughs".
2. Hesiod's five ages of man
- Roles: the golden, silver, bronze, heroic and iron races from Works and Days.
- Props: gold laurels, a silver cape, a cereal-box bronze breastplate, a hero's cloak, and for iron your own work clothes and a lunchbox.
- Suits: a mixed-budget group, because gold costs the most and iron the least.
- Cost and fallback: est. $5–20 each. The heroes are the only age not named after a metal, so they are the drop.
In the 1914 Evelyn-White translation on Project Gutenberg, the iron race is the one whose people "never rest from labour".
3. The Wu Xing five phases
- Roles: wood, fire, earth, metal and water from Chinese philosophy.
- Props: green leaves, red flame streamers, a yellow robe, a white foil collar, a black cape.
- Suits: a group that wants colour blocking; play the elements, never a cultural caricature.
- Cost and fallback: est. $5–15 each. It breaks at four, because the phases form a cycle.
Wuxing is usually translated "five phases" because it describes processes, not substances. Stand in the generating order: wood feeds fire, fire leaves earth, earth yields metal, metal carries water, water feeds wood.
4. The five planets visible to the naked eye
- Roles: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
- Props: a grey cratered cap, pale cloudy yellow, rust red, cream stripes with a red spot, and a hula hoop on suspenders for Saturn's rings.
- Suits: a mixed-height group, tallest as Jupiter, shortest as Mercury.
- Cost and fallback: est. $8–20 each. Mercury, the hardest to spot in a real sky, is the drop.
5. The five oceans
- Roles: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern.
- Props: five shades of blue; white faux fur for the Arctic; a cardboard penguin for the Southern.
- Suits: anyone; it is a five-T-shirt set with one prop each.
- Cost and fallback: est. $5–15 each. The Southern is the drop.
NOAA's National Ocean Service says there is one global ocean with historically four named oceans, and that most countries, including the United States, now recognise the Southern as the fifth. Without it, the other four are the historical set.
6. The five Great Lakes
- Roles: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario.
- Props: a paper crown for Superior, a mitten for Michigan, a canoe paddle for Huron, a ghost sheet for Erie ("eerie"), silver tinsel on Ontario for Niagara Falls.
- Suits: friends in the US and Canada.
- Cost and fallback: est. $3–10 each. Stand west to east; if Superior cancels, the initials spell HOME.
7. The five tastes
- Roles: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami.
- Props: a candy-wrapper skirt, a lemon hat, a pretzel necklace, a coffee-bean costume with a frown, a mushroom cap.
- Suits: a food-loving group; every role reads in one word.
- Cost and fallback: est. $5–15 each. Umami, the newest to be recognised, is the drop.
8. The five vowels
- Roles: A, E, I, O and U.
- Props: a white T-shirt each with a giant card letter, plus one sign reading "and sometimes Y".
- Suits: the last-minute group.
- Cost and fallback: est. $0–5 each. If U cancels, the others hold a sign: "Not the same without U."
Five-person sets compared: cost, build time and the 4-person fallback
The table groups the 8 sets by type and compares homemade cost, build time and whether each survives a dropout.
| Set type | Sets in this post | Est. cost per person (US$, Oct 2026) | Build time | If one friend drops out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Literature | Bennet sisters, Hesiod's ages | $5–25 | 2–3 hours | Works: drop Mary or the heroes |
| Science | Planets, oceans, tastes | $5–20 | 1–2 hours | Works: drop Mercury, the Southern or umami |
| Place and culture | Wu Xing, Great Lakes | $3–15 | 1–2 hours | Wu Xing breaks; the Lakes become HOME |
| Closet | Vowels | $0–5 | Under 1 hour | Works, with the "without U" sign |
The science sets are the safest pick for a group unsure everyone will show up. Wu Xing looks best but needs all five.
Why five friends drift into a two and a three
One conversation tops out at about four people, according to the 1995 Dunbar study, so five friends drift into a two and a three. At a loud party the fifth person can easily become the listener rather than a speaker, which is the "fifth wheel" feeling.
Shared laughter seems to help small groups hold together. In a 2020 study of 35 three-person conversations at UCLA, laughing together within a trio went with closer body synchrony, though the authors called it exploratory.
- Give the fifth role a job, such as Ontario carrying the Niagara tinsel to every photo.
- Swap pairs every hour, so the same two are not always together.
- Agree a fixed time, such as 10 pm, for the full-set photo.
What to do when one of the five drops out
Decide your fallback before you buy anything, because late dropouts are common. Set a decision date a week ahead: Saturday 24 October 2026, or Sunday 24 October 2027.
- Name the dropping role in advance: every set above has one, except Wu Xing.
- Keep the fifth costume: a friend who cannot come can wear it on a video call for one photo.
- Split costs by role, not equally: in the ages set, gold pays for gold paint and iron pays very little.
If two people cancel, switch to a stretchy theme. A fixed set with two gaps reads as a mistake in photos.
How to stage a photo of five people
The most reliable layout for five is two at the back and three in front, or a W with the middle person a step forward. Both keep every face in a vertical phone frame, which matters when nearly half of shared pages are opened on a phone.
A 2016 study tracked 172 students forming groups in a Dunedin stadium and found groups of about seven on average, with women and people rated attractive more likely to end up in the centre. Do not leave the middle to chance; give it to the anchor role, such as Jupiter, Elizabeth or the golden age.
- Line in order: planets by distance from the Sun, lakes west to east, vowels A to U; for Wu Xing, a circle shot from above.
Sending one of the five a Halloween page
These templates are one-person greeting pages, not party tools. Use one for the organiser, or the friend who had to cancel.
The interactive Happy Halloween card for a best friend takes about 5 minutes, holds up to 6 photos, and has a bestie mode that asks "Will you be my boo-st friend forever?". Pick it for a quick thank-you with your lineup shots.
The premium Halloween page with a voice note and unlock time takes about 10 minutes, holds up to 12 photos and a voice note of up to 60 seconds, and can stay locked until a time you set. It suits the friend who missed the night.
Either can carry a password; 38.5% of SubhSandesh creators add one before sharing. For a friend who would rather skip Halloween, browse all SubhSandesh templates instead.
When a five-person set backfires
A fixed set is wrong when your group is larger than 6 or unsure, because two gaps break the joke. It is also wrong if one friend dislikes costumes; the vowels T-shirt is the most you should ask.
SubhSandesh cannot help with the costumes themselves. A page reaches one person, the UI is English, and a printed photo beats a link for a friend you see daily.
