Halloween Costumes for Best Friends: 36 Duos, Costed and Timed
The easiest Halloween costumes for best friends are pairs a stranger can name in three seconds: salt and pepper, Jekyll and Hyde, sun and moon, two ghosts in sunglasses. Below are 36 platonic duo ideas for besties, siblings and roommates. On our estimates every one costs $20 or less per person, and 35 of them take two hours or less to build.
We make greeting pages, not costumes, so our numbers are about the photo afterwards. Across 5,199 SubhSandesh pages, 48.3% of views happen on a phone and each page averages 11.1 views, so every idea here is judged on whether it still reads as a pair on a small screen. Below: a decision table, fixes for mismatched heights and a reluctant friend, and what to send the best friend who can't make it.
What makes a best friend costume work?
A best friend costume is a pair of outfits that only fully makes sense when both people stand together. Each half reads alone, but the joke lands as a set.
The pairing matters more than the polish. In a 2018 study of a 279-student graduate program, friends' brain responses to the same video clips were more alike than those of people further apart in the network. A duo costume shows that overlap.
Moving together helps too. A 2016 meta-analysis of 60 experiments found that acting in synchrony raised prosocial attitudes and behavior by a medium effect (Hedges' g = 0.48), and still g = 0.30 when experimenters were blinded. Only four used people who already knew each other, so treat it as a nudge toward a shared routine, not proof that matching outfits bond friends.
36 duo Halloween costume ideas, grouped by type
Prices are our per-person estimates from thrift, dollar-store and craft-store items, not a survey. Times are joint build hours.
1. Classic pairs (7 ideas)
Food pairs are the safest bet because nobody needs to know a film. Big lettering does the work.
- Salt and pepper: white and black tees, paper "S" and "P", gray beanies. $8, 1 hour.
- Peanut butter and jelly: brown and purple tees, cardboard bread. $12, 2 hours.
- Milk and cookie: a milk-carton bib, and a brown tee with felt chips. $10, 1.5 hours.
- Ketchup and mustard: red and yellow outfits, card cone hats. $10, 1 hour.
- Chips and salsa: a yellow card triangle, and a red tee with felt "tomato". $12, 2 hours.
- Coffee and donut: a cup-sleeve hoodie, and a frosted foam-board ring. $15, 2.5 hours.
- Bacon and eggs: a wavy felt strip, and a white tee with a yolk. $10, 1.5 hours.
2. Opposites (6 ideas)
Opposites suit friends with different styles. They also forgive a height gap.
- Angel and devil: halo versus horns, all white versus all red. $10, 0.5 hours.
- Sun and moon: gold and silver card cut-outs on yellow and navy. $12, 1.5 hours.
- Summer and winter: flip-flops and shades versus scarf and mittens. $8, 0.5 hours.
- Early bird and night owl: robe and alarm clock versus sunglasses and an owl mask. $12, 1 hour.
- Cat and dog: ears and tails; the dog carries a chewed slipper. $10, 0.5 hours.
- Caped hero and masked villain: capes and masks with a logo you invent. $15, 1.5 hours.
3. Characters and archetypes (7 ideas)
Public-domain characters give you a famous duo without a licensed costume. Any film or cartoon pair you both love works too; we simply left brand names off.
- Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: deerstalker and magnifier; Watson needs only a jacket. $15, 1 hour.
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: matching suits, one neat, one wrecked. $20, 1 hour.
- Count Dracula and Van Helsing: cape and fangs versus long coat and garlic. $18, 1 hour.
- Alice and the White Rabbit: blue dress and apron versus ears and a paper pocket watch. $20, 2 hours.
- Tweedledum and Tweedledee: identical outfits and propeller caps. $15, 1 hour.
- Mummy and archaeologist: gauze bandages versus khaki shirt and brimmed hat. $12, 1.5 hours.
- Pirate captain and parrot: tricorn and eye patch versus green hoodie and felt beak. $15, 1.5 hours.
4. Pairings for one tall and one short friend (5 ideas)
These turn a height gap into the joke. Cast the taller friend as the bigger half.
- Jack and the Giant: a paper beanstalk sash versus a foam club. $15, 1.5 hours.
- Ventriloquist and dummy: suit and bow tie versus drawn-on jaw lines. $15, 1 hour.
- Lighthouse and lost sailor: striped top and headlamp versus a sailor cap. $12, 1 hour.
- Mother duck and duckling: yellow clothes and felt bills in two sizes. $10, 1 hour.
- Basketball player and basketball: jersey versus an orange top with tape seams. $15, 0.5 hours.
5. DIY duos under $20 per person (6 ideas)
Cardboard, felt and a glue gun cover all six. Build them together the weekend before.
- Two puzzle pieces: cardboard pieces that interlock side by side. $6, 2 hours.
- A pair of dice: foam-board boxes with dot stickers. $10, 2 hours.
- Cool ghosts: old white sheets and cheap sunglasses. $8, 0.5 hours.
- Letter tiles: cream card squares reading "B" and "OO". $5, 1 hour.
- Crayons: colored outfits, cone hats and wrapper labels. $10, 1 hour.
- Loading and 404: a bar stuck at 99%, and "Error 404: costume not found". $8, 0.5 hours.
6. Last-minute closet duos (5 ideas)
Everything here should already be in your closets. If it is 6 p.m. on 31 October, start here.
- Twin tourists: loud shirts, fanny packs and a camera. $0, 15 minutes.
- Mimes: striped tops, black pants, suspenders. $0, 15 minutes.
- Before and after coffee: pajamas and bed hair versus a suit and travel mug. $0, 15 minutes.
- Lost hikers: flannel, boots and a map held upside down. $0, 15 minutes.
- Cat burglars: all black, beanies and a pillowcase marked "$". $0, 15 minutes.
Which duo costume fits your time and budget?
This table tests five picks against the two things that sink most duo plans: a height gap and a reluctant friend. Hours are joint build time and costs are per person.
| Idea | Effort (hours) | Est. cost per person | Works for mismatched heights? | Works if one hates dressing up? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salt and pepper | 1 | $8 | Yes | Partly: tee and beanie |
| Sherlock and Watson | 1 | $15 | Yes | Yes: Watson is a jacket |
| Ventriloquist and dummy | 1 | $15 | Yes, best with a gap | Yes, as the ventriloquist |
| Two puzzle pieces | 2 | $6 | No, pieces should match | No, both wear cardboard |
| Twin tourists | 0.25 | $0 | Yes | Yes: everyday clothes |
If one friend is reluctant, pick a pair where one half is a prop and a jacket, not a full build. Salt and pepper is the cheapest all-rounder at $8 each.
What if one of you hates dressing up?
Give the reluctant friend the "straight" role: Watson, the archaeologist or the ventriloquist. Each needs one prop and their own clothes, at $0 to $15.
Then plan one shared routine instead of a second costume. In a small 2026 Brain and Behavior study, salivary oxytocin rose after a drum circle among 14 girls aged 9 and 10 who were friends, but not among 14 strangers. It is exploratory and about children, but points the same way.
Try one of these three routines. None needs an extra prop:
- Watson writes down every "deduction" Holmes makes about other guests.
- The dummy answers every question asked of the ventriloquist.
- The twin tourists ask strangers to take their photo at every stop.
Which costume shortcuts are not worth the risk?
Skip colored contacts unless an eye doctor fits them. A 2022 review in Optometry and Vision Science notes that US contact lenses are regulated as class II or III medical devices, and that wearers who don't get the lenses prescribed to them face a higher risk of complications, up to sight-threatening microbial keratitis.
For Dracula or a mummy, use eye shadow or face paint instead. Test any cardboard build in a doorway and a chair before the night.
For the best friend who can't make it on 31 October
Not every duo shares a city on 31 October. For the friend who is away, we built a Halloween card they play through with a bestie mode: you add a letter, up to six photos and a word to carve on the pumpkin, and they knock three times, carve a jack-o'-lantern and read your letter by flashlight.
In bestie mode the closing question becomes "Will you be my boo-st friend forever?", and you get an email the first time they answer. It ends with a 1080×1920 Boo License where you pick their costume from eight, from ghost and witch to black cat and bat, so they still get their half.
It is a one-person greeting, not a party invite or costume shop, and it is English only. Across the platform 90.9% of started pages get published; we have no Halloween data, but on Raksha Bandhan, our nearest measured festival, 49.4% of greeting pages (n = 89) were built on the day itself.
For your voice in it, the premium Halloween page adds a voice note of up to 60 seconds and a reply box for one 280-character answer. It also takes up to 12 photos, against six on the standard card.
When a duo costume, or a page, is the wrong choice
A duo is the wrong format for three or more friends, because someone ends up as an accessory; pick a trio or group theme. It is also not a couples list.
Skip the page if your best friend is at the party with you; a photo of you both in costume does that job better. And although 48.3% of our views are on phones, a friend who rarely opens links will get more from a printed photo.
