Halloween Costumes for Curly Hair, Sorted by Curl Pattern
The best Halloween costumes for curly hair give your curls a job (cloud, fleece, foliage or night sky), so the texture you already have becomes the costume. Here are 12 ideas, four per curl pattern (2 wavy, 3 curly, 4 coily), at an estimated (est.) add-on spend of $6 to $30; eight wear the curls out and four cover a protective style with a hat or mask. Plan for the photo too: 48.3% of the pages people share through SubhSandesh are opened on a phone, where a costume crops to head and shoulders.
That crop is where curls work hardest, and 38.5% of our creators add a password before sharing, sensible when the photo shows your face. Below: curl types, 12 builds, costs, wig caps, costume days, sprays and glitter.
What do curl types 2, 3 and 4 mean?
Curl types come from the André Walker Hair Typing System, created in the 1990s by a stylist: 1 is straight, 2 wavy, 3 curly and 4 coily, with A, B and C running loosest to tightest. A 2026 systematic review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology notes it was first built to market Walker's own products and is probably the system consumers know best.
The same review lists its limits: it misses the full range of curly hair, overlooks that one head can carry several patterns, and ignores density and porosity. So if your crown and nape curl differently, as on many mixed-race and Black heads, choose by the pattern framing your face, because that is what a phone photo shows.
12 Halloween costumes for curly hair, by curl pattern
Each idea gives the hair job, build, time and est. cost, then why the pattern helps. "Wear" means curls out; "covered" means a protective style under a hat or mask.
1. Type 2, wear: storm cloud
Scrunch your waves at the roots and pin three cotton-wool tufts along the parting. Add a grey top, a yellow felt lightning bolt and a closed umbrella. Time 20 minutes, est. $8. Waves give the soft, uneven edge a real cloud has, which straight hair can only fake by backcombing.
2. Type 2, wear: weeping willow ghost
Leave the waves loose and clip in eight to ten strands of green crepe paper to hang like willow fronds. A pale face and a long grey cardigan make it the ghost of a riverbank tree. Time 25 minutes, est. $6. Looser 2A and 2B waves droop the way willow branches do.
3. Type 2, covered: 1940s land girl's ghost
Pin two front rolls and tie the rest under a knotted headscarf, wartime farm-worker style. Dungarees, a checked shirt, a toy trowel and grey powder on the cheeks finish her. Time 40 minutes, est. $12. The scarf keeps hairspray off most of your waves all night.
4. Type 2, covered: lighthouse keeper's ghost
Plait the waves loosely and tuck them under a yellow sou'wester rain hat. A yellow raincoat, a coil of rope and a battery lantern do the rest. Time 15 minutes, est. $15. The hat is the signature, so frizz from a damp night stays hidden.
5. Type 3, wear: show poodle
Gather a high pineapple of curls on the crown and two lower bunches at ear level, each with a ribbon bow. Add a pink collar, a white jumper and a "Best in Show" rosette. Time 15 minutes, est. $7. 3A to 3C ringlets already hold the pompom outline a show cut needs.
6. Type 3, wear: alpaca
Fluff the curls with fingertips, never a brush, so they open into fleece, then add felt ears on a headband. A cream jumper and bright wool tassel earrings complete it. Time 15 minutes, est. $10. Curls supply the springy fleece, and finger-fluffing spares them the breakage combing causes.
7. Type 3, wear: autumn oak
Slide 15 to 20 red and orange felt oak leaves onto bobby pins and push them into your curls as the canopy. A brown top is the trunk; an acorn pendant finishes it. Time 30 minutes, est. $8. Defined curls grip the pins, so leaves survive a party.
8. Type 3, covered: ghost fencer
Plait the curls into two low braids and pin them flat under a fencing mask's back strap. White fencing-style clothes already read as a ghost; carry a toy foil only where props are allowed. Time 30 minutes, est. $30 with a toy mask. The braids protect your curls and come out as a braid-out next day.
9. Type 4, wear: nebula
Pick out the coils, then lay star clips and a loop of warm battery fairy lights on top, never wound tight. Wear black with silver eye shimmer. Time 30 minutes, est. $15. Coily hair holds shape without pins, so the lights float; keep lit wire away from candles.
10. Type 4, wear: bonsai tree
Shape an afro into a rounded canopy with a few felt leaves on short wire picks. A brown top is the trunk and a terracotta skirt or cardboard pot is the planter. Time 45 minutes, est. $12. 4A to 4C coils hold a sculpted outline the way a pruned tree does.
11. Type 4, wear: candy floss
Wrap pink tulle loosely around a picked-out afro so colour shows through the coils without spray. A striped paper cone worn as a collar is the stick. Time 20 minutes, est. $9. Coils give spun-sugar volume, and tulle avoids the drying a colour spray brings.
12. Type 4, covered: haunted nutcracker
Gather locs, twists or braids up into a tall cardboard soldier's hat lined with a satin cap. A red jacket, painted hinge lines at the jaw and a stiff wooden walk do the rest. Time 60 minutes, est. $25. Long protective styles fill the tall crown and keep the hat upright.
Curly hair costume ideas compared by pattern
This table groups the 12 ideas by pattern and by worn or covered, with est. add-on costs in US dollars.
| Group | Ideas | Est. add-on cost | Time | Out on wash day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type 2 wavy, worn | 1, 2 | $6–8 | 20–25 min | Cotton wool, crepe paper |
| Type 3 curly, worn | 5, 6, 7 | $7–10 | 15–30 min | Ribbons, felt, up to 20 pins |
| Type 4 coily, worn | 9, 10, 11 | $9–15 | 20–45 min | Clips, wire picks, tulle |
| Any type, covered | 3, 4, 8, 12 | $12–30 | 15–60 min | Pins only; the style stays in |
Worn ideas cost least, while covered ideas cost a little more but leave the curls untouched all night.
Protective styles under wigs and hats, and at school or work
Box braids, twists, locs or cornrows can sit under a costume wig or hat, and the cap between them matters. A 2021 traction alopecia review in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology advises a satin wig cap or velvet wig band where a wig rubs the hairline, and avoiding cotton and nylon, which cause friction and absorb moisture.
The same review counts natural hair, loose styles and wigs among the lowest traction risks, and says to ask a braider to loosen any braid that stings. For one night, skip extra-tight edges and let the hats in ideas 3, 4 and 12 rest on the cap.
Costume days raise a separate question: being told your natural hair is "the costume". The US federal CROWN Act of 2025 (S.751), banning race-based hair discrimination, was introduced on 26 February 2025 and sat in committee as of October 2026. An earlier version passed the House 235 to 189 on 18 March 2022; some states have their own CROWN laws.
In a 2025 Journal of Experimental Psychology: General paper with 1,693 Black women, cues that a workplace valued natural hair raised authenticity and eased hair discrimination (abstract read). Halloween should never be the only day curls feel welcome.
Colour sprays, glitter and wash day on curls
Curly and wavy hair tends toward an oily scalp but a drier fibre, and very curly hair breaks more easily when worked mechanically, says a 2015 overview in the International Journal of Trichology. That makes colour spray and glitter a wash-day problem more than a party one.
- Spray colour onto the outer layer only, keep it off the roots, and patch test exactly as the label says.
- Never brush spray or glitter out dry; the overview notes some product polymers build up and resist shampoo, so cleanse twice and condition.
- Lift loose glitter with sticky tape before wetting, then rinse with fingers, not a comb.
- Where tulle, felt or ribbon will do (ideas 2, 7, 11), skip the spray.
Sending your curly costume to one person
Curls show best from the shoulders up, as a phone screen frames them. Both pages below suit one person (partner, bestie, family or kids modes), never a crowd.
For a quick send, our Halloween card with up to six costume photos is about 5 minutes' work. Your photos hide behind foggy portraits they wipe clean, after a pumpkin they carve themselves.
When the costume has a backstory, the premium Halloween page with a voice note of up to 60 seconds takes about 10 minutes and holds 12 photos and a reply box. Tell them aloud why you went as a bonsai.
If the costume is your excuse to ask someone out, the date invitation page poses a question that needs an answer, and a yes starts a countdown; it is not a Halloween template. Of pages started on our platform, 90.9% are published and shared.
When a curly-hair costume, or our page, is the wrong call
Four cases call for a different plan. Only the last one concerns our pages.
- A fresh protective style that still feels tight: let it settle before adding a hat or wig.
- Bleached or colour-treated curls: skip spray and use tulle, felt or ribbon.
- A straight-haired character you love: wear a wig over a satin cap rather than heat-straighten for one night.
- They are beside you or have no smartphone: print the photo, because both pages need a browser and are English only.
