- • October averages stay hot where Halloween is warm: Mumbai 33.1 °C, Singapore 31.8 °C, Dubai 35.1 °C and Miami 28.7 °C highs (WMO).
- • In humid tropical cities the October night low stays at 23–25.5 °C, so a costume has to stay cool all evening, not just at noon.
- • Fabric construction matters more than fibre name: a 2023 Tekstilec study rated a recycled polyester knit highly air-permeable; coated and foam-backed fabric is the real problem.
- • A 2025 BJSM study found children aged 10–16 at similar heat risk to adults; under-10s were not tested, so watch toddlers closely.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh page views happen on a phone, so frame a costume photo for a small screen before sending it to family far away.

Halloween Costumes for Hot Weather That Keep Kids and Adults Cool
The best Halloween costumes for hot weather are single-layer outfits on a loose cotton or linen base, with the character carried by a headpiece, a prop or light makeup, never by a mask, a foam suit or a coated jumpsuit. Below are 16 of them in 4 groups. For relatives who live elsewhere, the photo matters too: on SubhSandesh, 48.3% of shared-page views happen on a phone and a typical page collects 11.1 views, so frame the photo for a small screen.

Where is Halloween hot? October averages in 13 cities
The 2026 date is a Saturday and the 2027 one a Sunday, and in much of the world 31 October still feels like summer. Each figure is a national service's October mean, listed on the WMO city climate pages; it describes the month, not the night.
| Climate type | Cities (October average high / low) | What goes wrong in costume | Groups below that fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Humid tropical | Mumbai 33.1 / 23.4 °C; Singapore 31.8 / 25.0 °C; Manila 30.9 / 25.5 °C; Chennai 31.8 / 24.2 °C | Evenings stay above 23 °C, so sweat never gets a break | 1 and 4: one layer, mesh, open face |
| Tropical summer | Darwin 33.5 / 25.0 °C; Miami 28.7 / 24.0 °C | A warm, sticky walk after sunset | 1 and 2: tee builds, headpieces |
| Hot and dry | Dubai 35.1 / 22.7 °C; Phoenix 31.8 / 18.0 °C | Afternoon sun at parties, then a cooler night | 3: loose shirts that block sun |
| Warm afternoon, mild night | Houston 27.8 / 16.1 °C; Orlando 28.9 / 19.8 °C; San Antonio 27.9 / 15.6 °C; Brisbane 27.1 / 16.3 °C | A 3 pm school parade is the hot part | 2 and 3, plus a layer for later |
The takeaway: in Mumbai, Singapore and Manila the night low sits within 10 °C of the high, while Phoenix and Houston drop 12–14 °C. Tropical cities need a costume that stays cool all evening; desert and Gulf cities, one that survives the afternoon.
Australia is the odd one out. Halloween falls in spring there, Sydney averages only 22.8 °C in October, and the heat is mostly a daytime issue in Brisbane and Darwin.
What counts as a hot-weather costume?
A hot-weather costume is one where air can reach the skin and sweat can leave it. That means one breathable layer, nothing sealed around the head, and no foam or plastic coating.
The fibre name on the label is not the whole story. A 2023 study in Tekstilec tested single-jersey knits of cotton, polyester and blends before and after 20 washes; 100% recycled polyester had high air permeability suited to active sportswear, while a 50/50 organic cotton and recycled polyester knit suited cold conditions (abstract read only). The real problem is thick, coated or foam-backed fabric with no air path.
The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees in its extreme heat guidance for parents, updated 30 June 2026. It recommends loose clothing that lets air flow, light colours, and a single absorbent layer so sweat can evaporate.
On masks: in a 2024 crossover study in Narra J, 36 healthy adults exercised with no mask, a surgical mask and an N95; the N95 raised skin temperature above the upper lip and made breathing feel much harder, though heart rate and oxygen did not differ. A rubber full-face mask is thicker than either, so keep faces open.

Heat-illness signs to watch for in children
The AAP tells parents to contact a paediatrician immediately if, after time in the heat, a child is faint or unusually sleepy, confused, losing coordination, has a severe headache, fever, intense thirst, nausea or vomiting, breathes faster than normal, or has not urinated for many hours. It adds that heat turns especially dangerous when the heat index passes 105 °F (40.5 °C).
- At any sign, stop, remove the headpiece, give water and find shade or air-conditioning.
- If the child does not improve quickly in the cool, call the doctor.
- Treat collapse, confusion that does not clear, or a seizure as an emergency.
The belief that children overheat faster than adults has thin support. A 2025 British Journal of Sports Medicine study of 68 children aged 10–16 and 24 adults, exercising for 45 minutes at 30 °C and 40 °C, found the children at a similar risk of overheating and dehydration as adults. It did not test under-10s, so for little ones caution stands.
Water, breaks and makeup that won't melt
The same 2025 study notes that the American College of Sports Medicine advises children aged 9–12 to drink 100–250 mL every 20 minutes during exercise, and adolescents 1–1.5 litres an hour. Door-to-door walking is lighter than sport, but a 500 mL bottle per child for an hour's route is a sensible floor.
- Plan a cool stop every 30 minutes: a shaded porch or an air-conditioned car.
- Use water-activated face paint in thin layers, set with translucent powder; blot, don't reapply.
- Paint the eyes, cheeks and nose only. Full-face coverage streaks as soon as sweat runs through it.
- Pin, don't glue. Safety pins and clips outlast lash glue in humid air.
Showing a hot-night costume to family far away
Warm-climate Halloween often splits families, say a child in Singapore and grandparents in Pune. A chat photo scrolls away; a greeting page built around it does not.
Our haunted-house Halloween card for a costume photo is a roughly five-minute build holding six photos at most, and its kids mode keeps the ghosts round and blushing with nothing gory. Grandma knocks, carves the jack-o'-lantern and wipes misty portraits to reveal the gecko or the ghost pepper.
For a partner or parent overseas, the cinematic premium Halloween page with a voice note is closer to ten minutes of work: a dozen photos, a recording capped at 60 seconds, a time lock, and a single 280-character reply that lands in your inbox. Across the platform, 90.9% of started pages end up published.
Both are for one person, not a party, and both are English-only. If late October also brings a birthday or anniversary, every SubhSandesh template is listed in one place.
When to skip the costume, or the card
Some nights are too hot for dressing up at all. Past the AAP's 105 °F heat-index line, hand out sweets at the door or move the party indoors.
If the person lives on your street, skip the link. Walk the costume over; a felt tail in person beats any screen.
We have no Halloween usage figures. Nothing here says how often costume pages get opened or answered, and the phone share quoted above covers all page types.
