- • Plan four Halloween sends: a teaser on 22 October, a launch on 26 October, a last chance on 30–31 October and a clearance on 1 November.
- • 48.3% of SubhSandesh's shared pages are opened on a phone, so put the hook in the first 30 to 35 characters of the subject.
- • In randomised field experiments, adding the recipient's name to the subject line raised opens by 20% and cut unsubscribes by 17%.
- • US law (15 U.S.C. § 7704) bans subject lines likely to mislead about the contents, and Gmail forbids fake "Re:" or "Fwd:" prefixes.
- • In a split test, send each line to 10% of the list, wait four hours and send the winner to the other 80%.

Halloween Email Subject Lines for Every Stage of a Sale
Good Halloween email subject lines do one job per send: tease on about 22 October, announce on 26 October, close the sale on the 30th or 31st, and clear leftovers on 1 November. Below are 44 original lines with character counts, 24 of them paired with a preheader. Front-load the hook into the first 30 to 35 characters, because 48.3% of SubhSandesh's own shared pages are opened on a phone, where long subjects get cut.
Late senders are normal, so plan the final push hardest. On SubhSandesh, 49.4% of Raksha Bandhan 2026 pages were built on the festival day itself, and 86.1% of the on-time ones within 24 hours of it. Raksha Bandhan is a different festival and 89 pages is a small sample, so read it only as a hint about last-minute habits.
What makes a Halloween email subject line work?
A Halloween email subject line is the one sentence a subscriber sees before deciding to open, and it should name a concrete reason to open now. The theme earns a glance; the offer, deadline or name earns the open.
In randomised field experiments with millions of recipients, Sahni, Wheeler and Chintagunta found that adding the recipient's name to the subject line raised the chance of an open by 20%, lifted sales leads by 31% and cut unsubscribes by 17%. Your own list will differ.
A 2014 library study in Evidence Based Library and Information Practice found that reminder emails naming the prize in the subject line drew a week-two response of 10.35%, against 5.6% when it went unmentioned. It compared four surveys from 2007 to 2013 without randomising, so treat it as a hint, not proof.
24 Halloween subject lines by campaign stage, with preheaders
A preheader is the short preview text most inboxes show right after the subject. Write it as the second half of the sentence, never a repeat. Each line shows the subject, its character count, then the preheader after the arrow; [Name] is a merge field.
Teaser: around 22 October
- "Something is scratching at our stockroom door" (45) → "The Halloween range lands Monday. Subscribers see it first."
- "Four sleeps until the lights go out" (35) → "The Halloween sale opens on the 26th. Set a reminder now."
- "[Name], we left a key under the doormat" (39) → "Early access opens 24 hours before everyone else."
- "The cauldron is warming up" (26) → "Menu reveal on Friday. Here is the first ingredient."
- "A short list of things that go bump" (35) → "Five new arrivals, one each night until Halloween."
- "We're dimming the lights on Monday" (34) → "A first look at the Halloween collection."
Launch: around 26 October
- "The Halloween sale is open: 25% off everything orange" (53) → "Runs until 11:59 pm on the 31st. No code needed."
- "[Name], your Halloween shelf is stocked" (39) → "Costumes, candles and candy bowls picked from what you browsed."
- "Doors open: 40 new Halloween pieces are live" (44) → "Every size is listed with its stock count."
- "Dress the porch in ten minutes" (30) → "Three kits, one box each. Order by [cut-off date] for delivery before the 31st."
- "Fill the candy bowl before the doorbell rings" (45) → "Bulk packs in three sizes, with nut-free options clearly marked."
- "Halloween hours, events and one secret item" (43) → "Everything on in store, 26 to 31 October."
Last chance: 30 and 31 October
- "Final hours: 25% off ends at midnight" (37) → "The sale closes at 11:59 pm tonight, local time. No extensions."
- "Last call before the ghosts clock off" (37) → "Halloween prices end tonight, and your cart is saved."
- "[Name], your cart is still haunting us" (38) → "The three items you left are 25% off until midnight."
- "Still need a costume? Order by 2 pm" (35) → "Same-day pickup in store until 6 pm on the 31st."
- "Win a [prize]: entries close tonight" (36) → "Every order placed before midnight counts as one entry."
- "The candle is nearly out on this sale" (37) → "Six hours left at Halloween prices."
The late crowd decides here, so name the deadline and, if there is one, the prize. Use cart, stock and table-count lines only when they are true; a false claim breaks the rules below.
After Halloween: 1 November
- "The morning after: costumes at half price" (41) → "Leftover stock, 1 November only, listed by size."
- "Halloween is over. The candy markdown isn't" (43) → "Bulk bags at half price until Wednesday."
- "We counted the candy wrappers" (29) → "What you bought most this Halloween, plus 15% off your next order."
- "Already planning next October?" (30) → "A three-minute guide to packing decorations."
- "Thanks for coming to the party, [Name]" (38) → "Photos from our Halloween night, plus a code for next time."
- "One more treat, then we're done" (31) → "A 20% code for November, valid for seven days."
Halloween campaign dates compared: 2026 and 2027
This table maps the four sends to calendar dates. Halloween is a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027, which shifts every send's weekday.
| Stage | 2026 send | 2027 send | Target length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teaser | Thu 22 Oct | Fri 22 Oct | Under 45 characters |
| Launch | Mon 26 Oct | Tue 26 Oct | Under 55 characters |
| Last chance | Fri 30 and Sat 31 Oct | Sat 30 and Sun 31 Oct | Under 45 characters |
| After Halloween | Sun 1 Nov | Mon 1 Nov | Under 45 characters |
In 2027 the last-chance pair lands on a weekend. Test a Saturday morning send against an evening one.

B2B readers get one pun at most. In a work inbox, the deadline and the number persuade.
How long should a Halloween subject line be, and should it use emoji?
Our working estimate: a phone inbox shows roughly 30 to 40 characters of a subject before cutting it. No major mailbox provider publishes a fixed limit, so front-load the hook.
Emoji are a rendering gamble. The Unicode Consortium's emoji FAQ notes that whether an emoji shows in colour or black and white can vary from platform to platform. Use one at most, never as the only carrier of meaning.
Spam filters and the law: CAN-SPAM, PECR and Gmail rules
Under US law, 15 U.S.C. § 7704 bans a commercial email subject heading that would be likely to mislead a reasonable recipient about the message's contents. It also requires a valid physical postal address and bars further sends more than 10 business days after an opt-out request.
In the UK, the ICO's guidance on electronic mail marketing says you must not send marketing emails to individuals without specific consent, except past customers under the "soft opt-in", with an opt-out in every message. Companies can be emailed; as of October 2026 the ICO says this guidance is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act.
Gmail's email sender guidelines forbid a subject starting with "Re:" or "Fwd:" unless the email is a real reply or forward, and warn against emoji that imitate graphic elements to deceive. They also ask senders to keep spam rates below 0.10% and never reach 0.30%, and since 1 February 2024 anyone sending over 5,000 messages a day to Gmail must offer one-click unsubscribe.
How to A/B test a Halloween subject line
Halloween comes once a year, so test one variable per send. A workable split is 10% of the list for line A, 10% for line B, a four-hour wait, then the winner to the remaining 80%.
Test name versus no name, prize named versus not, or 30 characters against 50. Judge on clicks or sales rather than opens alone, since some mail apps preload messages and inflate open counts. As a rule of thumb, below about 1,000 subscribers per variant the gap is noise.
When a marketing email is the wrong tool
A list email reaches many people, so it never feels personal to one regular. For the customer who buys from you every October, or the partner who proofread every draft, a one-person page says more.
The interactive Halloween card suits a quick thank-you: up to six photos, a letter read by flashlight and a pumpkin carved with your word, made in about 5 minutes. The premium Halloween page suits a bigger gesture, with a voice note of up to 60 seconds, up to 12 photos, an optional unlock time and a reply box, in about 10 minutes.
Both are greeting pages for one recipient: they cannot send to a list or track opens. For other occasions, browse every SubhSandesh template.
